Speaking of getting rid of the royal family, there was a good article in The New Yorker about the citizens of Brighton, which is in Sussex, signing a petition asking the city to oppose the couple using the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The organizer opposes the idea of the monarchy and aristocracy rather than the couple themselves. It was an interesting read. https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/prince-harry-and-meghan-markles-royal-flush

Even if Meghan is the worst, which I have my doubts about (I’m with Hoya in believing the truth is somewhere in the middle), the poor royal family narrative makes me roll my eyes. I love royal gossip but I’ve increasingly come to think that the institution and all those involved at the upper levels are toxic. They all knew about the Andrew/Epstein scandal since at least 2010. There was a Vanity Fair article about it right before Will and Kate’s marriage that someone posted on this forum ages ago. That was the first time Virginia Roberts tried to alert the public about Epstein and Prince Andrew and the palace buried the story. Even if you argue they were just trying to protect the monarchy, there seemed to be no personal consequences for Andrew, no reports that he was on the outs with the Queen or Prince Phillip at any time afterward. These people just accepted his behavior and helped cover it up. I just don’t have sympathy for any of them, except maybe Kate since I doubt she has much say in anything. Even once things heated up with Epstein’s arrest/suicide and Andrew’s disastrous interview the Queen apparently had to be convinced by Charles and William that Andrew needed to step down from royal duties. And it’s not because he participated in sex trafficking and knowingly cavorted with a pedophile that Charles and Will wanted him out, because they knew about that for almost a decade or longer, but because he got caught. If I were a citizen of the UK I probably would be advocating for abolishing the monarchy, not only because of the financial consequences of having one, but because I wouldn’t want this family representing me. So Meghan may or may not be awful (she does seem to be a bit of an opportunist) but I have zero sympathy for the royal family. ETA: I found the article from 2011 about Andrew. It’s a very interesting read especially in light of what’s come out since. https://archive.vanityfair.com/article/share/ac60f552-4163-4d39-a36b-d2014fe20062

Interesting that the Rose/Will affair wasn’t big gossip over there. It was a pretty big story here. I also heard the rumor that Harry was angry with Will over the affair and that that was the reason for the falling out but I didn’t give it much credit. It just sounds preposterous given how close Will and Harry were. I’ve also heard the rumors that Meghan leaked the story but I also find that a little hard to believe, although I would believe that over Harry and Will falling out because Will had an affair.

Thanks Wordsworth! That was very helpful. In other royal news that I missed Rose Hanbury and her husband were at church with Kate and Will on Sunday. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7856179/amp/Kate-Middleton-Prince-William-seen-friend-Rose-Hanbury.html

I don’t know what to think about Meghan. The press coverage since the royal wedding has been brutal and it makes me think where there’s smoke there’s fire. On the other hand, I can’t ignore the obvious racism and have to wonder what role that has played in the coverage of her. Here is a thoughtful opinion piece from the New York Times on racism in Britain and the treatment of Meghan. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/09/opinion/meghan-markle-prince-harry.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage

She almost certain froze her eggs either way. They find the age of the uterus, assuming the woman is still menstruating, doesn’t effect fertility, but the age of the egg highly effects fertility. Either that or they used donor eggs.

Or the countdown to the breakup is beginning. Ninety percent of couples become less happy after having children. They’ll probably stick it out for the first year but if there are problems they’re only going to be magnified now that they’re parents.
-
That was tough because there were so many good choices.

I believe she is too. Parental alienation is so sad and very harmful.

All the royals are entitled to varying extents but I think Prince Andrew is on the extreme end. I believe he’s narcissistic personality disorder.

I remember hearing that Andrew was always the Queen’s favorite. I don’t know where he usually stands but he was positioned where I would think he would be, fairly close to the Queen on the other side of Charles and Camilla. ETA: He was standing/seated in the same place in 2018. 2019: 2018:

I just read Big Little Lies. I liked it although I thought the execution could have been better. I’m looking forward to checking out the show when I’m ready to resubscribe to HBO even though I can’t stand Reese Witherspoon. She might ruin it for me. I also read Thirteen Reasons Why and felt the same way I did about BLL. I enjoyed it and thought the premise was good but thought it could have been executed better. I tried watching the show but I couldn’t even get through the first episode.

I’m so disappointed GOT won for best Drama. There is no way they deserved it for last season. They only deserved to win for visuals, costuming, music, casting, etc. the actors were mostly good but they were limited by the material they were given.

Thanks. I didn’t catch the letter difference. I’m only familiar with Hertfordshire and couldn’t figure out why the article said it was near the border.
-
The article says Hertfordshire is near the border between England and Wales, which is not how I would describe it at all, unless they’re talking about a different Hertfordshire (not the county featured in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice).

I just saw the pictures. Forget the dress, what happened to Alison Brie’s face? She looks like a shadow of her former self. I used to think she was pretty but now...yikes. I know most, if not all, of this transformation is her unhealthy weight loss. I wish these actresses didn’t have such distorted views of their weight.

Miley Cyrus puts out a statement on Instagram regarding her divorce:

Ugh. I thought they shouldn’t have made the second or third movie. The first one ended perfectly, IMO, and I think it’s clear they hadn’t originally intended for there to be another other films.

If you were thinking Pitt you weren’t the only one. When I first read Hoya’s post I did a double take until I remembered that her Glee boyfriend is also named Brad.

The press was brutal towards Fergie as well. I know she’s done a lot of horrible things since but they were unrelenting before she went off the rails. I feel like you have to be at least a little crazy to marry into that family.

I have no idea about her personality and if she is high maintenance or not but I find the avocado BI very hard to believe. Wasn't Suits filmed in Canada? The climate there is also not good for growing avocados and she survived. It's not like she's never lived without avocados and I find it hard to believe she couldn't get them at least occasionally with all the money she has. I do wonder if she's having some second thoughts related to the viciousness of the press. Unlike Kate, she wasn't under their scrutiny for very long before getting married and may not have been prepared enough. She had some exposure being an actress but she wasn't even an A-lister and even the biggest movie stars, as intrusive and vicious as the press can be towards them, don't have it as bad as someone who marries into the royal family.

I think that it’s hard to delineate actors by format these days because there really aren’t too many strictly television stars or strictly movie stars or strictly streaming stars. A lot of movie stars now do both television and streaming, and many television and streaming stars also have significant roles in films. The stigma of doing television isn’t there anymore because TV (including streaming) is in its Golden Age and often better than a lot of the stuff being released for movie theaters.

How are you liking them? I read them after the second season of the show.
