Report: Tiger Woods cut deal to kill National Enquirer story Detroit News staff and wire reports Tiger Woods once gave Men's Fitness an exclusive interview and photo shoot in return for the National Enquirer -- owned by the same company as the health magazine -- killing a story that included photos of the world's No. 1 golfer frolicking with a woman other than his wife, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. While American Media Inc. told the Journal there was no deal, former employees of the company with "direct knowledge of the arrangement" said that's exactly what happened. A spokesman and a lawyer for AMI said passages in the Journal report were "inaccurate" and "false," but when asked by the Journal if any deal was made kill the story, the lawyer said only, "No comment." Advertisement Woods, a notoriously private person who typically only gave Golf Digest much access because they forked over $1 million a year to the Tiger Woods Foundation, posed for the cover of the August 2007 Men's Fitness. Golf Digest editor Jerry Tarde told the Journal he was "mystified" when word came of the Men's Fitness spread. That issue sold 176,000 copies, about 30 percent better than average for that year. The Journal said the Enquirer had pictures of Woods with another female, believed to be Florida restaurant employee Mindy Lawton, in a church parking lot in 2007. The photos were poorly lit but the Enquirer apparently contacted the Woods camp anyway, and its initial response was not to comment on the alleged affair. But Woods' reps later made the magazine offer, the Journal reported. Lawton has claimed to have an affair with Woods, describing their sex to the News of the World as "extremely good." Report: Tiger Woods Reaches Seven-Figure Deal with Alleged Mistress Tiger Woods is reportedly paying off his alleged mistress Rachel Uchitel for her silence about their supposed relationship. RadarOnline.com says sources close to the situation tell them Woods will pay Uchitel over $1 million, but less than $3 million, for a guarantee that she won't release the reported hundreds of emails and texts they've exchanged over the past five months, or admit to their alleged affair publicly.
