Russell Brand

Recommended Posts

I think people outside the UK are somehow under the impression that people like Brand, Jordan/Katie Price and Peter Andre, Kerry bloody Katona, Posh and Becks actually represent the entire cross-section of Britain and that they also have the backing of the British public in foisting themselves on the US pubic.

It couldn't be further from the truth. Just as I don't suppose everyone in the US is a gun-toting redneck or a right-wing evangelico loonbucket, neither is Britain anywhere near what we are portrayed via these celebrity types. Most ordinary, working people in Britain cannot stand them, we have them pushed on us all the time by our own media and most people are not that interested. Over time the media has encouraged people to be shallow and self-absorbed. It's sad really, but for starters Brand is widely disliked here anyway. Most apart from his diehard fans just dont give a toss about him. It's just a shame people like that get to talk for the nation and non-British folks think we all think like him.

There was a massive outcry here over his comments to Andrew Sachs. Brand has now resigned and Wossy is also in deep water. I think in general TV and reality media has gone too far and got too spiteful. Maybe the backlash is beginning. I think people have had enough of celebritites tearing others to shreds and getting away with it on big paypackets. It would be nice if celebs could get their opinions across without resorting to nastiness and abuse.

I think I am going to change my username to evangelico loonbucket. It has a nice ring to it.

Now, onto more serious matters...

I agree with everything that you have written and I think that when it comes to culprits, the "popular" or mass media have a lot to answer for. The basic problem (and it is the case on both sides of the pond, I think) is that the media (by which I mean newspapers (although the US press is quite different from the UK in a lot of respects) and TV channels) have to compete for ratings/advertising and have somehow to make themselves stand out in some way and the easiest way to do this is by being as sensational/outrageous as possible. Also, I don't think we can ignore the fact that there is also a Faustian pact between a lot of these "celebs" and the media/paparazzi whereby unfavourable stories are withheld in return for picture opportunities/exclusive interviews and where media and papparazzi are tipped off so they can get pictures which make them some money. There is also the appalling phenomenon of "kiss and tell" where a lot of the lower level tabloids will pay a few thousand pounds to someone so that they will present their account of having slept with a "celebrity" or sports star. It all feeds on itself. Sadly, the fact remains that if people out there did not buy the magazines and watch the programmes then this might all go away. A couple of million people a day still buy "The Sun"and a similar number still buy the "News of the World" on Sunday. However these things do go in cycles. We've just seen a long period of economic growth and prosperity come to a crashing end and it seems more sober and difficult times are with us, one hopes that this may well lead to more sober and sensible media. I live in hope...

You highlighted the role of the Daily Mail in stoking this matter up and I don't think that should be ignored.

There is a significant undercurrent of anti-BBC feeling amongst a lot of the media, principally from the Murdoch empire for commercial reasons and Associated Newspapers (Mail, Evening Standard) for political reasons. Murdoch thinks the BBC has an unfair competitive advantage because of the licence fee and Murdoch papers rarely pass up an opportunity to attack the BBC while the Mail pines for a return to a bizarre Olde Englande, largely of their imagination, where there were no immigrants or asylum seekers, no one ever ate a swan (except the Queen), everyone was law-abiding (largely because there was a friendly copper on the beat in every village in the land) where women stayed at home to clean the house and look after the children while the husband went out to earn money to look after his family. In this bizarre and wonderful world, no teenager ever became pregnant, criminals (the few that there were) were sent to prison for life (or executed if the crime was particularly heinous, such as dropping litter) and the unemployed would hop on their bikes and cycle three hundred miles to find work (which was always plentiful, you just had to get out there and find it). As a consequence of this somewhat quaint view, the Mail does not like the "lefty Liberal" BBC and will take the chance to give it a hefty kicking whenever the chance arises. I jest a touch, but you get the point.

From popbitch...

>> Spanked by the public <<

"Is this what the BBC calls entertainment?"

A collective madness seems to have seized the

country. The news is still fixated on Jonathan Ross and

Russell Brand's unfunny prank call. From a

programme that elicited just two complaints, tens

of thousands of people every day are now

queuing up to complain. It's like when Princess

Di died - everyone just wants to be involved.

The only person who does seem to come out of it

well though, is the prank's victim, Andrew Sachs.

So desperate is Georgina aka Voluptua, the subject of

the prank, to protect her grandfather's privacy and

save him from embarrassment that she's signed

up with Max Clifford and sold her story exclusively

to the Sun. As she says, "What's funny

about humiliating a lovely old man?"

Well, it seems that Voluptua might know

something herself about humiliation - as we've

found a recent porn movie, in which someone who looks

very much like her is enjoying a good spanking,

Max Mosley style. And the lovely blonde with the

strap-on? Why, is it another celebrity? We're

told she looks a lot like of the dominatrixes from

the recent Max Mosley spanking privacy case. How A-list!

"I feel totally and utterly exposed", Georgina

told The Sun. Quite.

UK comic Russell Brand developing "Arthur" remake

Actor Russell Brand poses at the 13th annual GQ magazine Reuters – Actor Russell Brand poses at the 13th annual GQ magazine 'Men of the Year' party in Los Angeles November …

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Russell Brand might soon be caught between the moon and New York City.

The controversial British comedian is developing a remake of "Arthur," the 1981 comedy that starred Dudley Moore, as a potential starring vehicle. He is meeting with scribes to write the screenplay for Warner Bros.

The original movie followed a boozy playboy rascal who is set to inherit a fortune if he marries an heiress his family thinks will make something out of him. However, he falls in love with a working-class woman and turns to his valet for help when his family makes him choose between money and love.

Moore was nominated for an Oscar as was Steve Gordon, the film's writer-director. John Gielgud won the Oscar for his supporting role as the valet, and the movie's theme song, "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," sung by Christopher Cross, won for original song.

Brand already has a rascally reputation, not only for his past sex-, drugs- and alcohol-infused lifestyle but also for on-air radio pranks that recently led him to being suspended by the BBC. He subsequently resigned.

American audiences got their first taste of Brand in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," in which he played a rock star lothario. He next appears with Adam Sandler in "Bedtime Stories," which opens on Christmas Day.

Brand is filming Julie Taymor's adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest," and will reunite his "Marshall" cohorts for "Get Him to the Greek."

Katy Perry Dating Brand

Katy Perry is secretly dating Russell Brand.

The 'Hot N Cold' singer was whisked away to Thailand on a romantic break with the presenter after impressing him with a picture of her breasts after they met at the MTV Video Music Awards last month.

A source said: "When they were both in New York for the music awards Russell finally got his chance to work his charm on her.

"Katy knows his bad boy reputation but could not resist - especially when Russell sent her a love poem with a note attached saying, 'Please send me a poem back.'

"Russell couldn't stop laughing when Katy sent a photo of her boobs with the word 'poem' scrawled across them. The next minute Russell picked up the phone and invited her to Thailand for a secret getaway."

Friends have warned Katy about the 34-year-old comic's womanising ways but she is determined to make the relationship work.

The source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Despite his reputation, Katy thinks Russell is so charming she just wants to give things a go with him. She thinks he is hilarious and incredibly sexy."

The couple have now returned from their trip, with Katy taking to her Twitter page to gush about the "magical" holiday.

Speaking about some of Russell's favourite stars, she added: "Been schooled on Morrissey, Oscar Wilde and Peter Sellers."

Russell also used Twitter while on holiday, revealing he had been looking at "sexy" statues in Thailand.

Katy and Russell were first romantically linked after the VMA awards when they were seen kissing at Lady Gaga's after-party at New York nightspot Avenue.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that Katy will host the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) next month.

The 24-year-old star impressed bosses after she fronted the ceremony in Liverpool, England, last year and so they have asked her to return for next month's show in Berlin.

Katy is the first person to front two consecutive EMAs.

I think he is so sexy. I would do him in a second, wearing a full body latex suit of course. And dousing myself with Lysol afterwards.

Yes, I think I have to agree. I have NO idea why I find him sexy, but I do. He would be what Lainey calls my ShameFuck (Ed Westwick is hers....)

Perry 'To Introduce Brand To Her Parents'

Katy Perry is to introduce new boyfriend Russell Brand to her parents, it has been claimed.

However, the 'Hot N Cold' singer is said to be worried that her Christian mother and father will not approve of her romance with the controversial comedian.

A source told The Sun: "Katy is as besotted with Russell as he is with her. Katy is sure that, after they get used to him, they would approve of Russell, but she wants to get that initial meeting out of the way as early as she can. Keith and Mary are devoted to the church and hold the institution of marriage as a central core of their beliefs."

"They are genuinely happy for their daughter, but want to give Russell the once-over to check that he is suitable."

The 24-year-old - whose parents run a ministry near Los Angeles - apparently wants to arrange the meeting as soon as possible so that she can continue working on her new album.

The insider added: "Katy is really keen to get the meeting out of the way early on, so her and Russell can get on with their relationship without anything hanging over their heads."

Perry Cures Brand's Womanising Ways

British comedian RUSSELL BRAND has credited his girlfriend KATY PERRY with putting an end to his womanising ways, insisting he is no longer interested in the promiscuous life he led before meeting the pop star.

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor has been dating Perry since September (09) and the former sex addict admits their budding romance is already having a positive effect on his lifestyle.

He says, "I am living in a different way at the moment. Regardless of what happens in my current situation, I am unlikely to be satisfied with the calamitous promiscuity of the preceding five or six years."

But Brand refuses to discuss his relationship with the I Kissed A Girl hitmaker in more detail - because he fears the press will misconstrue anything he says about her.

He adds, "She's lovely and I don't want her to read anything about herself.

"The other day a journalist from a tabloid in a ludicrous fedora said to me, 'Russell, are you in love with Katy?' And I said, 'You look like a character from a Graham Greene novel. I think I'm in love with you.' I said that to defuse the situation. But what do they print? They print, 'I think I am in love'."

Russell Brand To Propose?

Russell Brand has been shopping for a diamond ring - sparking rumours he is going to propose to girlfriend Katy Perry.

The British comic star was photographed looking at bands at exclusive London jewellers Cartier on Friday (13.12.09) with one specific sparkler catching his eye.

A source said: "His face lit up when he saw this one particular diamond ring. He put it on his ring finger and gazed at it for ages."

Russell, 34, has been dating Katy, 25, since September and it looks as though he is ready to turn his back on his womanising ways for good and settle down with the 'I Kissed a Girl' singer.

Earlier this week, the 'Bedtime Stories' star admitted he is a changed man since meeting the pop beauty.

Russell - who is a former heroin addict and alcoholic - said: "She's 'The One'. I'm a one-woman gentleman now. She's amazing. I'm having a right laugh, she's a good person to spend time with and it's changed me, it's made me stop doing stuff that I probably shouldn't have been doing.

"I didn't drink or take drugs, my main hobby was meeting girls and chatting them up. Once you stop doing that, everything's a lot more relaxing. Now I'm just talking to people, I do a bit of yoga, meditate, look out the window, think about the cat. It's a more chilled out pace of life."

Katy Perry Waiting To Wed

Katy Perry and Russell Brand are yet to set a wedding date.

The 'I Kissed A Girl' singer and the British comedian got engaged on New Year's Eve (31.12.09) after a whirlwind romance but Katy insists they will only tie the knot when they feel the time is right, despite recent reports they had already advised friends of which dates to keep free for the ceremony.

She said: "We love each other and we desperately want to be with each other, so we're going to take it as we come.

"I think the right time will be the right time."

Katy says humour is the key to her relationship with Russell as they can always make each other laugh, but also credited the 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' star's romantic ways as keeping their union strong.

She said: "Humour is a very big part of our lives, and when things get difficult, we just have a laugh.

"He's the most romantic man I've ever been in contact with - ever! I didn't think anyone could ever live up to that."

The 'Hot N Cold' hitmaker also revealed how the couple first met when she hurled an empty water bottle at his head at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in September.

She told gossip website Wonderwall: "I threw an empty water bottle at his head across Radio City Music Hall at the VMAs and it hit him straight in the head and I said 'Hiiiiiiii!!' And from then on it's always been like 'Oh God...' So thanks, empty water bottle."

Katy Perry thanks water bottle for Russell Brand union

Katy Perry began her romance with Russell Brand at last year's Video Music Awards (VMAs) in New York City in a bizarre way - she threw an empty water bottle at his head.

The "I Kissed A Girl" hitmaker and the British comic have been dating ever since they ran into one another at the event in September - and they recently sealed their union by becoming engaged.

Perry has revealed the unusual technique which helped land her man - and admits her aim was crucial to help break the ice.

She says, "I threw an empty water bottle at his head across Radio City Music Hall at the VMAs and it hit him straight in the head and I said 'Hiiiiiiii!!' And from then on it's always been like 'Oh God...' So thanks, empty water bottle."

And the singer, who accepted Brand's proposal during a New Year's trip to India, is adamant she's in no rush to exchange vows with her funnyman fiancée.

She adds, "We love each other and we desperately want to be with each other, so we're going to take it as we come. I think the right time will be the right time."

Katy Perry 'Wants To Wed Brand In Church'

Katy Perry reportedly wants to get married in a church so she does not upset her parents.

While fiancé Russell Brand recently suggested that the pair wed in Los Angeles' Sunset Marquis hotel, the singer is said to have made other plans.

"Russell has been visiting the hotel for years and it is steeped in rock 'n' roll history," a source told The Mirror.

"It's in the middle of West Hollywood, but it has beautiful gardens and you feel like you are in some kind of tranquil paradise. Katy was keen, but when it was suggested they could have their blessing in one of the recording studios, she put her foot down."

The insider continued: "Her religious parents would be crushed if she didn't get married in a church. Russell said she can have whatever she wants - as long as his mom's there."

Insecure Katy Perry

Katy Perry has "moments of insecurity".

The 'I Kissed a Girl' singer - who is engaged to British comic Russell Brand - admits she is often shy and unsure of herself even though she has a huge pop career and famous fiance.

She explained: "Even the most confident people still have their moments of insecurity. And even though I may come across as loud and bubbly and brimming with confidence, I can be a shy girl too."

However, the 25-year-old pop beauty - who is known for her skimpy outfits and energetic stage routines - fights through her insecurities for her fans.

She told more! magazine: "For me, I wrote a lot of my songs in my hot little apartment and I didn't think much of them - but then I started playing them in front of people and they were singing the songs back to me louder than I was singing them. It gives you goosebumps on your arms. It might sound cheesy, but I could swear that every artist would say that's the most validating thing. Everything I do, I know it is for the fans and they are the reason why I exist." Katy - who is currently working a new album, due to be released later this year - recently admitted she was thrilled with how 2010 is panning out for her.

She added: "Being in the studio again and making this new album is really great, and then to get the Grammy nomination while I was writing it was a really lovely boost of confidence and encouragement and then of course there's my engagement! So yes, I would say it's all going pretty well."
