Hanks, Streep Take a Chance on ABBA Musical

Actor's Playtone shingle will produce 'Mamma Mia!' movie

January 11, 2007

Bizarre Fact No. 1: The ABBA musical "Mamma Mia!" has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide since it opened in 1999.

Bizarre Fact No. 2: Tom Hanks is expected to executive produce "Mamma Mia!" for the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hanks and wife Rita Wilson are developing the "Mamma Mia!" feature for Universal Pictures and ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus will also come on board as executive producers.

Phyllida Lloyd, a theater veteran who helmed the original London staging, is in talks to make her feature directing debut.

"Mamma Mia!" focuses on a bride-to-be who invites three men who might be her father to her wedding. Hilarity ensues along with some 22 ABBA classics including such usual suspects as "Dancing Queen" and "Take a Chance on Me."

The incomparable Meryl Streep will star as the bride's mother. It will be her first on-screen musical proper, although she's showed off her pipes in "A Prairie Home Companion," "Postcards Form the Edge" and "Death Becomes Her."

The show's stage creators Catherine Johnson and Judy Craymer will remain involved as screenwriter and producer respectively.

No word on whether or not Hanks or Wilson will take some sort of on-camera role as well.

Hanks, Howard Near 'Da Vinci' Sequel

Production on 'Angels & Demons' may begin by January

April 12, 2007

Star Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard are close to deals to return for the sequel to their critically maligned blockbuster "The Da Vinci Code."

According to The Hollywood Reporter -- scurrying after a story first reported online -- Sony hopes to have "Angels & Demons" in front of cameras by January.

The CinemaBlend website reported earlier in the week that the Hanks and Howard deals would be record-breaking, though naturally the studio won't confirm that kind of information for the trade paper.

Akiva Goldsman still has to turn in his script based on Dan Brown's novel, which preceded "The Da Vinci Code" in the literary world, but will probably have its timeframe shifted for the big screen. In the book, code-breaking Harvard egg-head Robert Langdon (Hanks) finds himself in the midst of a series of murders connected to the Vatican and to the shady Illuminati.

Hanks will next star in "Charlie Wilson's War" and will appear in a supporting role in "The Great Buck Howard."

The great Ron Howard, on the other hand, has been circling a number of possible directing options including a remake of "Cache" and a filmed version of the play "Frost/Nixon."

Uhhh...where the bloody hell is IAN?

Hanks, Crowe, Washington? Must be Oscar bait

In an effort to grab that gold statuette, the studios pull out the big guns

By Paige Newman

Movies Editor

MSNBC

November and December is the last chance for the studios to chum the Oscar waters in the hopes of reeling in a gold statuette. And many of these big movies don’t offer just one star turn, but two or even three. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe duel it out in “American Gangster.” Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts share the screen in “Charlie Wilson’s War.” Add to that Oscar favorites like Daniel Day-Lewis and stars on the rise such as Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem, and you have some heady movies to choose from this winter.

“Charlie Wilson’s War”

Starring: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Om Puri, Jud Tylor, Nazanin Boniadi

Director: Mike Nichols

Story: Based on a true story, this film tells the story of liberal Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson (Hanks) who teamed with a rogue CIA operative (Hoffman) to arm the Afghan rebels against the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The two manipulated Congress, the CIA and a host of foreign governments. Roberts plays the Houston socialite with the money to back Wilson’s actions.

Buzz: Is there such a thing as a sure thing? If so, this is it. With Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing”) penning the screenplay based on George Crile’s book and Nichols (“The Graduate”) in the director’s chair, this film is sure to be whip smart, incredibly funny and slyly critical at the same time. Hanks and Hoffman are definite Oscar threats here.

Release date: Dec. 25

“Sweeney Todd”

Paramount Pictures

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, Jamie Campbell Bower, Jayne Wisener, Sacha Baron Cohen

Director: Tim Burton

Story: This big screen adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical tells the story of Sweeney Todd (Depp), a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge. Upon his release, he becomes “the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and those who go to him for a shave or a trim lose more than hair. Bonham Carter plays his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, who makes rather strange meat pies. Alan Rickman costars as the judge who sent Sweeney to prison. Cohen is rival barber, Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

Buzz: London’s Daily Mail reported that all the blood in this film left Warner Bros. executives a bit squeamish, and the studio asked Burton to make some cuts. Hmm, what did they expect from a musical about a man who slits people’s throats? Burton told Entertainment Weekly, “To do an R-rated musical with 70 percent singing was kinda like, ‘Well I haven’t done this one before.’” Burton and Depp (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Ed Wood”) bring out the best in each other. This challenging film could snag Academy Award gold.

Release date: Dec. 21

“Atonement”

Focus Features

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starring: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Romola Garai, Vanessa Redgrave, Brenda Blethyn

Director: Joe Wright

Story: This adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel focuses on how one small mistake can have tragic consequences. When 13-year-old Briony (Saoirse Rona) accuses Robbie, the son of the family housekeeper, of a crime, it not only pulls him apart from Briony’s older sister Cecilia (Knightley), it ultimately leads him to fight in World War II. The sisters become nurses; one seeks forgiveness, while the other longs for her lost love.

Buzz: This film was a hit at this year’s Toronto Film Festival and currently has 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.com. The Guardian Unlimited’s Peter Bradshaw wrote, “There are moments — delirious, languorous, romantic moments — when this film appears to have the lineaments of a classic.” And Variety’s Derek Elley said, “Rarely has a book sprung so vividly to life, but also worked so enthrallingly in pure movie terms.” This is one that should not be missed.

Release date: Dec. 7

“No Country For Old Men”

Miramax Films

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald

Director: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

Story: When Llewelyn Moss (Brolin) finds $2 million in cash, a load of heroin and a pickup truck surrounded by dead men, he decides to take the money. Talk about a bad choice. Anton Chigurh (Bardem), a man who kills people with a pneumatic air-gun, quickly picks up his trail. Sheriff Bell (Jones) can’t do anything to stop the mayhem that will follow.

Buzz: This film is based on author Cormac McCarthy’s (“The Road”) book, which does not shy away from violence of Biblical proportions. The Coens go back to their “Blood Simple” roots with this one. The critical response reads more like admiration than pure love. Salon’s Andrew O’Heir wrote, “My gut feeling is that this ambitious experiment doesn't entirely work.” Variety’s Todd McCarthy called it “one of (the Coen brothers) very best films, a bloody classic of its type destined for acclaim.” Bardem is a definite Oscar contender — and don’t be surprised if Jones or Brolin sneak into the mix.

Release date: Nov. 9

“American Gangster”

Universal Pictures

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starring: Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Josh Brolin, Armand Assante, RZA, John Ortiz, John Hawkes, Ted Levine

Director: Ridley Scott

Story: Set in New York in the late ’60s and early ’70s, this film follows the rise of Frank Lucas (Washington), who starts as a driver for one of the city’s crime bosses. But when the boss dies, Lucas takes over, ruling the inner-city drug trade and attracting attention of an outcast cop, Richie Roberts (Crowe), who becomes determined to take Frank down.

Buzz: Like Washington’s “Inside Man,” this film looks likely to strike a nerve with critics and fans alike. Critic Emanuel Levy is already calling the film “clearly one of the best pictures of the year.” Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) was originally set to direct back in 2004, before the studio pulled him and shelved the movie. Producer Brian Grazer convinced Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”) to step in.

Release date: Nov. 2

“There Will Be Blood”

Paramount Vantage

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Kevin J. O'Connor

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Story: Inspired by Upton Sinclair’s “Oil!” this film follows Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis), an oilman who becomes a tycoon over the course of 29 years. He butts heads with preacher Eli Sunday (Dano), who has oil on his land as well — oil that Plainview wants.

Buzz: After seeing it at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Cinematical’s Scott Weinberg wrote, “It's more than a ‘departure’ for the director; it's a monumental display of ‘evolution’ that'll wow the established fans and impress a helluva lot more new ones.” Up until now, Anderson (“Magnolia,” “Boogie Nights”) has been known for his large ensemble pictures, but this is an epic that’s focused squarely on Lewis’ character — and one that makes him a leading contender for Oscar.

Release date: Dec 26

“I’m Not There”

Weinstein Company

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starring: Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Michelle Williams, Julianne Moore, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Ben Whishaw, Marcus Carl Franklin

Director: Todd Haynes

Story: Six different actors (Blanchett, Ledger, Bale, Franklin, Gere, Whishaw) play Bob Dylan-esque figures at different stages of the musician’s life. Each segment tells a different aspect of his life story and music.

Buzz: This is not your standard linear music biopic. While it jumps around in time and the different actors may put off some viewers, for those looking for something more inventive — a film that lets the audience decide who Dylan ultimately is — this film looks like a refreshing change of pace. Critic David Poland called the film “a very demanding, but very clear-minded piece of filmmaking,” and added that it is a film that needs to be seen more than once to be truly absorbed.

Release date: Nov. 21

“Youth Without Youth”

Sony Picture Classics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starring: Tim Roth, Matt Damon, Alexandra Maria Lara, Bruno Ganz, André Hennicke

Director: Francis Ford Coppola

Story: Dominic Matei (Roth) is an aging linguistics professor who survives a deadly accident to find his youth miraculously restored. His restored youth comes with an heightened intellect, which attracts the attention of Nazi scientists. He reunites with his lost love Laura (Lara), but ultimately must choose between her and his life’s work.

Buzz: This is Coppola’s first directorial effort since 1997’s “The Rainmaker.” On his Web site, he compares his situation to his lead character’s, writing, “Like (the film’s) leading character, Dominic, I was tortured and stumped by my inability to complete an important work.” This is a smaller, more intimate film for Coppola, who always wanted to make films more like “The Conversation” and less like the epic “Godfather” films he is known for. This film may ultimately prove too arty for Oscar, but if anyone can make it a hit, it’s Coppola.

'Da Vinci Code' Sequel Racing Against Deadline

Ron Howard and Tom Hanks return for 'Angels & Demons,' but will the quality?

October 25, 2007

Columbia has set a February start date for the "Da Vinci Code" sequel "Angels & Demons," which assumes the film will have a shootable script.

According to Variety, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is huddling with producers Brian Grazer and John Calley, plus director Ron Howard to come up with a finished version of the Dan Brown adaptation before the WGA's current pact expires on Oct. 31.

Assuming that everything goes according to plan, "Angels & Demons" will shoot around Europe starting in February and hit theaters in December 2008.

That would put Howard on a tight leash next year getting both "Angels & Demons" and "Frost/Nixon" ready by the end of the year. The former "Happy Days" star finished shooting the adaptation of Peter Morgan's Tony-winning play just last week.

Although it was savaged by critics, "The Da Vinci Code" made made more than $750 million worldwide last summer.

"Angels & Demons" actually preceded "The Da Vinci Code" in Brown's original chronology. In the book, code-breaking Harvard egg-head Robert Langdon (returning star Tom Hanks) finds himself in the midst of a series of murders connected to the Vatican and to the shady Illuminati.

If a shooting script is in place, expect to hear major "Angels & Demons" casting news soon.

Simpsons' exec. producer does Kennedy bill ad

By: Jeffrey Ressner

Tom Cruise and Robert Redford weren’t the only ones biting their fingernails after the Iraq war talkfest “Lions for Lambs” tanked last weekend at the box office.

Several other Iraq-themed movies, from the Sundance Film Festival favorite “Grace Is Gone” (starring John Cusack) to Brian DePalma’s highly controversial “Redacted,” are opening within the next few weeks.

Fellow thesps Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts have got to be more than a little nervous, too, since their own Middle East conflict pic, “Charlie Wilson’s War,” opens late next month.

That film, directed by Mike Nichols and penned by “The West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin, is based on the true story of a freewheeling Texas congressman and his efforts to covertly arm Afghan mujahedeen during the early 1980s. (Nichols’ last overtly political outing, 1998’s “Primary Colors,” cost $65 million to produce but earned only $39 million at U.S. movie houses.)

We grabbed a quick peek at an early draft of Sorkin’s screenplay and, while it’s much more ring-a-ding-ding than “Lions for Lambs,” there remain several elements that mainstream audiences might find less than riveting, such as dialogue about nonbinding resolutions, references to the House subcommittee for defense appropriations, old “Gunga Dan” footage of then-“CBS Evening News” correspondent Dan Rather and a two-minute apologia of sorts for Rep. John P. Murtha’s murky mix-up with Abscam.

But, yay, at least Hanks styles his hair better than that “DaVinci Code” quasi-mullet.

Hollywood writers strike claims first film casualty

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In the first big-screen casualty of the Hollywood writers strike, Columbia Pictures said on Friday it had postponed production on "Angels & Demons," a prequel to its box-office hit "The Da Vinci Code" starring Tom Hanks.

The Sony Corp.-owned film distributor also said the planned release date for the Ron Howard-directed religious thriller, originally set to open during the 2008 holiday season, has been pushed back to 2009.

"With the strike nearing its third week, Columbia Pictures has postponed production of 'Angels & Demons'," the studio said in a statement, adding that the script by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldman needed further work.

Goldman, a member of the Writers Guild of America, is barred by the WGA's strike rules from editing or polishing scripts for the duration of the walkout.

In addition to his work on "Da Vinci Code," Goldman's writing credits include boxing drama "Cinderella Man" and "A Beautiful Mind," for which he won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay.

"While the filmmakers and the studio feel the screenplay is very strong, we do not believe it is the fully realized production draft required of this ambitious project," Columbia said. "At this time, there is no new start date, but we are setting a release date of May 15, 2009."

The Writers Guild went on strike against major film and TV studios on November 5 after negotiations on a new contract for its 12,000 members reached an impasse in a dispute over higher fees the union is seeking from Internet revenues.

The strike immediately threw the television industry into disarray, as work on numerous late-night talk shows and prime-time comedies and dramas ground to a halt.

"Angels & Demons" marks the first major Hollywood film set for release in 2008 to be delayed by the walkout.

Columbia said it did not expect the strike to affect any other film in its 2008 slate, which also includes the next James Bond film, a Will Smith action drama titled "Hancock" or the Adam Sandler comedy "You Don't mess with Zohan."

"Angels & Demons" is being adapted from the bestselling book of the same name by author Dan Brown.

Published in 2000, it was Brown's first novel to introduce the character of Robert Langdon, the crime-solving Harvard professor of iconography and religious art played by actor Tom Hanks in the big-screen adaptation of "The Da Vinci Code."

Hanks is on board to return as Langdon for "Angels & Demons," which the studio optioned as part of its 2003 acquisition of film rights to Brown's "Da Vinci Code."

Despite mainly negative reviews after its premiere at the Cannes film festival in May 2006, "Da Vinci" went on to tally more than $753 million at the box office worldwide.

That film, like the book, teamed up Langdon with a young French cryptologist to solve a murder entwined with the works of Leonardo Da Vinci and a supposed alternate history of Christianity.

A central premise of the story was that Jesus fathered a child by Mary Magdalene, and that a clandestine society has for centuries protected the identity of Christ's living descendants from agents of the Catholic Church.

In "Angels," another murder investigation leads Langdon on a quest to thwart a plot by an ancient group, the Illuminati, to blow up the Vatican during a papal conclave.

Socialite Joanne Herring wins 'War'

Wednesday, December 12th 2007, 4:00 AM

Former Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson and his ex-fiancee, Joanne Herring, won a second victory at Monday's L.A. premiere of "Charlie Wilson's War."

The ex-lovers - who supplied the mujahedeen with the guns they needed to chase the Russians out of Afghanistan - succeeded in detonating parts of the script that suggested Wilson and Herring had also seeded the events of 9/11.

Herring, played by Julia Roberts in the Mike Nichols film, tells us she "practically choked" when she read Aaron Sorkin's original screenplay. The movie ended with a shot of the Pentagon in flames, implying that Herring and Wilson (played by Tom Hanks) had abetted Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda crew.

"Can you ever predict a war?" she argues. "The shelf life of a Stinger missile is five years. There's no weapon we got them that can be used today."

Herring also didn't cotton to the way Sorkin had Roberts swearing, spouting evangelical screeds and engaging in martini-fueled romps with Hanks.

"I didn't like the cursing, the drinking, the blatant sex," says the 78-year-old thrice-married Houston socialite, philanthropist and former talk show host. "They turned me into a kooky, hypocritical tart."

After sharing the script with Wilson, she says, "We wept and wailed and gnashed our teeth." Then they brought in some legal muscle - Dick DeGuerin, the Houston attorney who represented Robert Durst, the deranged New York real estate heir who, as Herring notes, "killed his neighbor and chopped him in pieces. Dick got him off."

DeGuerin got the attention of Universal and the producers, who flew Wilson and Herring to meet the stars in Morocco, which was doubling as Afghanistan.

"Tom Hanks said to me, 'I've been in love with you for six months, give me a kiss!' I was delighted to. And Julia Roberts was so lovely.

"They still wouldn't let me on the set," she adds. "I said, 'What do you think I'm going to do - roll on the floor and foam at the mouth?'"

Assured that the script would be changed, Herring flew to the L.A. premiere with Houston pals, who included former Secretary of State James Baker. To everyone's great relief, she and Wilson liked what they saw on the screen.

Herring admitted that, just like in the movie, she wore slinky dresses to meet men in power.

"That's the only way anyone would listen to me," she laughs. "I'm a Christian, but even Christ liked to have a good time."

Hanks & Wilson Sued Again by Former Contractor

Tom Hanks and his actress wife Rita Wilson have been hit with more legal action by their former contractor, in a dispute over work carried out on the stars' Idaho home more than five years ago. Building firm Storey Construction Inc. has been locked in a bitter legal battle with the couple over unpaid bills for building their Sun Valley house between 2000 and 2002. Hanks and Wilson refused to pay up for what they claimed was "substandard and defective work," and when the contractor entered arbitration in 2003, the Hollywood couple filed a countersuit, asking for $800,000 in compensation for the allegedly unacceptable work. But the actors' suit was thrown out of court and they were ordered to pay up more than $1.2 million. However, they have since re-filed for arbitration, upping their compensation claim to $2.5 million. But on Friday, Storey Construction filed a countersuit, accusing them of being "motivated by revenge" following the success of the firm's previous arbitration ruling. The new legal documents also describe Wilson's "bizarre conduct" at the 2003 arbitration hearing, during which she "leaped from the witness stand and started screaming hysterically" before she "stormed out of the hearing room," reports Tmz.com. The company is asking a judge to dismiss the Hanks' new compensation claim.

Hollywood actor TOM HANKS is happy with his "nice guy" persona because he's confident he lives up to the reputation. The Forrest Gump star admits he will always be typecast into the role of the good guy, but it doesn't worry him as he's as charming off-screen as he is on. He says, "There's no doubt a degree of my image is going to follow me into every gig. Look, I am a nice guy. That's my image. I can't erase it from people's minds." And Hanks insists his reputation comes from his strict work ethic. He adds, "It comes from respecting people even when I don't like them. I don't give people less than my all and don't expect less of other people."

Hollywood stars seek early start to labor talks

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood stars George Clooney, Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are urging the Screen Actors Guild to start talks for a new labor contract as soon as possible in order to avert a strike.

Two days after the Writers Guild of America ended a three-month strike, the Oscar-winning quartet placed ads in the Thursday editions of trade papers Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. The ads urged SAG leaders to commit to negotiating a deal quickly, Daily Variety reported.

SAG, whose militant leadership strongly supported the writers' strike, has not yet set talks in preparation for the June 30 expiration of its contract with the studios.

SAG's committee on wages and working conditions has been preparing for the talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the studios' bargaining arm.

Even though the writers walkout just ended, Hollywood is in the throes of a de facto strike because movie studios are reluctant to commit to projects if there is a risk they could be shut down by an actors' stoppage.

The last major SAG strike lasted for three months in 1980. In 2000, commercials actors struck for six months.

SAG national executive director Doug Allen said on Wednesday that the union, which represents about 120,000 actors, would begin talks "at a time that will most benefit our members."

But Clooney expressed concern last week that there was "a lot of strike fatigue" in Hollywood and claimed SAG officials would lose negotiating power the longer they waited to begin talks with movie and television producers.

Members of the writers union will vote later on their proposed three-year contract, which provides new payments to writers for work streamed on the Internet and doubles rates they earn for films and TV shows resold as Internet downloads. It also extends the union's contract to cover made-for-Web content.

War Drums

THE "scud stud" may fire a legal missile at Mike Nichols and Universal Pictures. Arthur Kent, former NBC News heartthrob, is angry that clips of his Gulf War reports were used in NBC Universal's "Charlie Wilson's War" without acknowledgement. "It was a pretty basic breach of copyright law - brazen, even. And this from one of the corporations that's always moaning on and on about piracy," Kent tells Canadian gossip Shinan Govani. Kent, now a politician in Calgary, isn't too impressed with the Tom Hanks movie, either, calling parts "emphatically false." NBC Universal didn't get back to us.

Bringing Saksy Back

Tom Hanks, Mary J. Blige, Lisa Rinna and her husband, Harry Hamlin, Ginnifer Goodwin and Angie Harmon came out last night to support colleague Hilary Swank at the Saks Fifth Avenue Unforgettable Evening at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The stars talked Oscars, fashion, J. Lo’s babies — and the event itself, which benefited the Entertainment Industry Foundation's Women’s Cancer Research Fund.

Dancing With the Stars alum Lisa Rinna told PageSix.com that she will be vamping it up at Sunday's Oscars in Reem Acra, topped off with Neil Lane bling. "I just had a fitting before I came here… it's so pretty. I chose it because… it screamed Oscars."

Ginnifer, who is Chris Klein’s girlfriend, revealed that her Oscar plans are a bit more low-key, saying, "I am going to be watching on the couch with barbecue and macaroni and cheese," while former Oscar winner Tom offered advice to nominees. "Eat healthy, get some exercise, get some good sleep and pay no attention to the media," the Charlie Wilson’s War star suggested.

Angie Harmon gushed about her daughters, Finley, 4, and Avery, 2, and said that manners are priority No. 1 in her house, telling PageSix.com, "I'm from the South, so — 'yes ma’am,' 'please' and 'thank you' — manners are very important."

Of pal J.Lo’s impending motherhood, Angie said, "I think she's going to be a wonderful mom. It was something that she seems to have wanted for so long, and I'm just really really happy for her… It's great, she looks so happy."

Although the glitzy evening was filled with fun and fashion, Tom reminded everyone of the evening's cause: "Everybody has somebody who's been touched by women's cancer. I just met a survivor over there. You're going to have to look out for it in the future. Maybe your aunt or your mom died of it or is fighting it right now. It's getting better because money funded it, so come on, come in, free meal, Mary J. Blige, have some laughs! That's how it work

Missing Tom

WITH the media immersed in Eliot Spitzer-mania, who cares about Tom Hanks? A passerby strolling past Spitzer's apartment building at Fifth Avenue and East 79th yesterday saw Hanks "walk by, in a beret and Coke-bottle sunglasses" with a "young brunette" - but due to the frenzy over the Spitzer scandal, "not a single person recognized Tom," said our spy. Hanks' lady friend, who might have been an assistant to the star, was heard asking of Silda Spitzer, "Why was she standing with him?"

Or, you know, his daughter. Do they even bother to think at Page Six? Geez!

TOM HANKS, his wife RITA WILSON and NIA VARDALOS, the star of their hit MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING production, are set to go to trial to fight for money they claim they're owed.

The trio co-produced the 2002 movie and maintain their co-financiers at Gold Circle Films still owe them a share of the profits.

The ongoing lawsuit was referred to mediation on Monday (14Apr08) and Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos set a court date for 20 January (09) just in case the trio's mediation battle fails.
