Television 2020-2021

I've been keeping an eye on who is starting to film again - soap opera Bold & the Beautiful getting a lot of press. Planning to use actors' own spouses as body doubles in love scenes - genius! Hope they get paid too ;-)

Hopefully the real life spouses also exude more chemistry than the blow up dolls they dusted off from the storage bins.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I am finally, FINALLY, having a chance to catch up on 70-jillion shows and movies I haven't had time or dvr space to watch when they first came out. And I am finding new stuff every day! (we watched Shop Class - a workshop competition for teens on Disney+ - yesterday and now will finish that, I found a decorating competition show from England on Netflix)

I.......I am not ready for new network tv!!

I love Allison Janney, but Anna Faris is really the heart of the show. Or rather, the two together. I don't see how you can have Mom without the Daughter.....

Dear god I added another streamer - Peacock. I can't even use my smart tvs for that damn option! But I really wanted to watch AP Bio and the new Psych movie, and I have 3 months free from Universal (we got season passes for the parks in Florida in February.... before we knew what 2020 would bring) So we watched the first AP Bio and the Psych movie this weekend and also a couple episodes of Third Rock from the Sun because we've been trying to watch on Amazon prime but that never wants to load on the tv we watch the most. So we hooked up my laptop to the tv and watched Peacock that way......

ABC Cancels ‘Stumptown’ Due to COVID-19, Reversing Season 2 Renewal

Cobie Smulders-led drama was renewed for Season 2 in May

“Stumptown” has been canceled by ABC after one season due to COVID-related circumstances, TheWrap has learned.

The Cobie Smulders-led drama was picked up for a second season in May, but on Wednesday the network was forced to reverse its decision due to scheduling concerns, according to an individual familiar with the matter. The studio behind the series, ABC Signature, will shop the show to other outlets.

The decision comes as the network’s fall schedule begins to take shape. Initially announced back in May with a scripted-heavy slate — including the planned second season of “Stumptown” — ABC has since shifted the schedule around as its various series have begun to return to production in recent weeks. Several of the unscripted and comedy series that have been able to resume filming have received premiere dates across the coming weeks, but none of the network’s dramas have yet been slated.

“Stumptown” is just the latest series to fall victim to COVID-19. Amazon recently scrapped its epic historical drama “Cortes y Moctezuma” due to rising costs arising from the pandemic, and Netflix reversed course on planned new seasons of the YA dramas “The Society” and “I Am Not Okay With This.” TruTV similarly canceled plans for another season of Andrea Savage’s “I’m Sorry” last month.

Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, “Stumptown” starred Smulders as P.I. Dex Parios, a “strong, assertive, and sharp-witted army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt, and a brother to take care of in Portland, Oregon.”

Jake Johnson, Tantoo Cardinal, Cole Sibus, Adrian Martinez, Camryn Manheim and Michael Ealy also starred.

Darn, I liked Stumptown.  Hope they get picked up by another network.  However, I think COVID is going to cause a lot of problems in the upcoming TV schedule. :(

The Royals Are Not Pleased About Meghan and Harry’s Netflix Deal

https://www.thecut.com/2020/09/prince-william-is-livid-over-meghan-and-harrys-netflix-deal.html

Meanwhile, season four of The Crown is set to  premiere on November 15. It features newcomer Emma Corrin as Lady Diana Spencer, and will follow the royal family from the late 1970s up until the early ’90s. In 2016 the show’s creator, Peter Morgan, told People that seasons four and five will be “heavily” focused on Diana, and Independent reports that it will touch on Diana’s struggle with an eating disorder.

Exclusive: Firefly Reboot Coming To Disney+

By Liana Keane | 21 hours ago

Disney announced a lot of their big plans for the future in a  huge investor presentation last week, but they didn’t announce all of them. There’s one property that I’ve been hearing whispers about that didn’t get mentioned. That property is Firefly. The lack of an announcement about it doesn’t mean, however, that Disney isn’t keen to do something with the Joss Whedon cult phenom. In fact, they’re working on a new Firefly series for Disney+.  Development on their Firefly reboot is in such an early stage, however, that they couldn’t make an announcement about it during last week’s Investor Day.

Disney acquired the rights to Firefly in their acquisition of Fox back in 2019. There was no immediate move to do anything with the property, but something has changed.  That something is the end of movie theaters.

Movie theaters are done. The biggest chain in the world will likely shutter permanently next month and the others are likely to follow suit. As a result Disney’s focus is shifting away from movies and towards producing programming for streaming platforms. Their investor presentation last week demonstrated this with a strong focus on Disney+ programming.  To feed the streaming beast Disney needs more and more TV programming. Specifically, they’d like to have something that’s a draw besides Star Wars and Marvel. One of their plans to up the variety of content on their streaming platform is Firefly.

My source tells me that Disney is in early development on a Firefly reboot.  The new show would start the story of Captain Mal Reynolds and his crew aboard the Serenity over from scratch, with an aim to make this a long-running series on Disney+.  There is a twist here and the twist is that they see the show as ideal family-friendly programming for Disney+.  My source tells me they’re planning to target it more at a PG-adventure, family audience and less at the sort of PG-13 dynamic the original Joss Whedon show went for.

This shift in tone suggests the new version of Firefly might drop characters like Inara, who is basically a prostitute.  Instead it’ll probably lean more into the fun and adventure aspect of the universe’s stories. Fans may initially be unhappy, but it’s easy to see a way it could work.

My source was unable to confirm to me whether series creator Joss Whedon is actually involved in the new Firefly reboot. Whedon has recently been embroiled in a strange controversy with some of his former actors and it’s made him difficult to employ. Disney, not wanting to court the ire of outraged Twitter activists, may simply be unwilling to have him involved in their brand. It could also end up that Whedon won’t want to be involved, if indeed Disney really is committed to turning Firefly into a gold standard family-friendly adventure series. That may skew too far from his original vision for the program.

Firefly was cancelled by Fox television back in 2002. It only produced 14 episodes. The series would later get something a revival with the movie Serenity in 2005. That wrapped up some of the show’s plots, but ultimately never became the box office juggernaut dedicated Firefly fans thought it deserved to be.  Since then the franchise has been dormant, with the cast having moved on to other things. Disney’s Firefly reboot could be just the thing fans have been waiting for.

Not sure if I'll love a PG version (or a version without Nathan Fillion 😉) but I might be willing to give it a try if I still have Disney+ when it comes out.....
