The Boss Goes to Bat in Boston

EOnline.com

Hot dogs, peanuts, Cracker Jack...and the Boss? Summertime couldn't get any better than this.

Rounding the bases of his current yearlong "barnstorming tour" in support of his Grammy-winning The Rising, Bruce Springsteen is taking his hungry heart to Boston's Fenway Park.

The New Jersey rocker's management has confirmed that the historic home of Major League Baseball's perennially pennant-less Red Sox will play host to its first ever rock concert as Springsteen and his E Street Band hit the field on September 6.

"We know what Fenway means to the people of Boston and are very appreciative to the Boston Red Sox for the opportunity to play at this great symbol of the city of Boston. It will be a night we all remember," says Jon Landau, Springsteen's manager, in a statement.

Talk about a lucky town.

Fenway Park is one of six venues recently added to Springsteen's summer outdoor jaunt. The other new stops include ballparks in Detroit, Milwaukee and Chicago, as well as stadiums in Buffalo and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The trek gets underway July 15 with a record string of 10 dates at Giants Stadium in Springsteen's home state of New Jersey.

The only other occasion that Fenway and its famed Green Monster outfield wall have played host for something other than a baseball game was in 1973, when the Newport Jazz Festival relocated there for two days with performances by Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. (For the record, Smash Mouth did perform its hit "All Star" during the All-Star Game festivities at the park in 1999.)

According to the Boston Globe, Red Sox representatives petitioned Boston's Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing to grant permits authorizing concerts at the 36,000-seat park on September 6 and 7, opening up the possibility that a second show may be added at a later date.

The licensing office, run by director Patricia Malone, has 30 days to give the okay, but as far as Larry Cancro, senior vice president of Fenway affairs for the team, is concerned, it's a done deal.

"I'm very optimistic. I think it's an appropriate show. It's a good venue for the show," says Cancro, who calls the teaming of Fenway and Springsteen the perfect match of an "iconic ballpark and an iconic rock act."

Since hitting the thunder road nearly a year ago, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and his reunited E Streeters have relived the glory days, selling an astonishing 3 million tickets while crisscrossing the United States and Europe.

Yankees fans are advised to be on their best behavior. Tickets for the Fenway gig will go on sale on Friday via Ticketmaster.

Boss to help raise money for theater

Bruce Springsteen plans to raise some money for the restoration of the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank.

Springsteen, who grew up in nearby Freehold, is scheduled to hold a benefit on May 7 at the theater, which was built in 1926 to showcase movies and vaudeville.

Restoration and renovation work is expected to start this summer.

The theater was renamed after native son and jazz great William "Count" Basie in 1984.

Nelly Eyes Springsteen Collaboration

Rapper NELLY is set to collaborate with legendary rocker BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN on his forthcoming album.

The Hot In Herre hitmaker has approached The Boss about making a record together - and the veteran singer is more than happy to oblige.

Scheduling difficulties made it impossible to get the song recorded in time for Nelly's latest LP Brass Knuckles - which will be released in July (08) - but the hip-hop star is determined to make the collaboration happen later this year (08), and possibly feature the track on a special edition of the album.

He says, "We still might get a chance to get it off. We're saving it. We might repackage it for the holidays."

Nelly's new record already features collaborations with artists including Fergie, Akon, Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J.

Springsteen defends Obama in elitism flap

Rocker Bruce Springsteen, renowned for his gritty parables of American working class life, Wednesday defended Democratic White House hopeful Barack Obama, as he fights charges of elitism.

'The Boss' wrote in a message to fans that the Illinois Senator's comments that some small town Americans were "bitter" so clung to religion and guns, had been ripped out of context."

"Like most of you, I've been following the campaign and I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest," Springsteen wrote on his website.

"He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems."

"At the moment, critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships.

"While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision ... often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment."

Obama's rivals Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain have used his comments in San Francisco last week, to portray him as aloof from the struggles of blue collar Americans, in key battleground states.

Springsteen wrote that Obama was the best candidate to lead a "great American reclamation project" to mend the "terrible damage" of the last eight years.

The impact of celebrity endorsements in US presidential races is debatable, but Springsteen's defense of Obama may carry some cachet due to the content of his songs, many of which give voice to hopes and fears of small town America.

The Boss made his first foray onto the presidential trail by performing at events for defeated 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry.

Days before the election, on a day-long swing through battleground states Wisconsin and Ohio, he pulled total crowds of 100,000 people to hear Kerry speak.

A letter from Bruce Springsteen

http://www.brucespringsteen.net/news/index.html

Dear Friends and Fans:

LIke most of you, I've been following the campaign and I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest.

He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next President. He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where "...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone."

At the moment, critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships. While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision, so well described in his excellent book, Dreams of My Father, often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our Constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment.

After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken. I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.

Over here on E Street, we're proud to support Obama for President.

-- Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen Pays Tribute To Late Keyboard Player

By WENN

Bruce SpringsteenBruce Springsteen & The E Street Band paid a touching tribute to late keyboard player Danny Federici in Tampa, Florida on Tuesday night by shining a light on the pianist's vacant stool.

The band resumed its tour after scrapping two Florida dates following the death of Federici last week, and opened the Tampa show with the keyboard player's favorite tune, "Backstreets."

As the band performed, a lone spotlight shone on Federici's keyboards.

Prior to the song, Springsteen and his bandmates took the stage in the dark as a video montage of Federici played on a giant screen above them - with the soundtrack of E Street Band anthem "Blood Brothers."

FedericiAnd there was a further tribute when Springsteen joked about getting another Federici favorite, "Sandy," right later on in the set. The rocker told fans, "We better get this right. Somebody's watching."

Federici, 58, died after a long battle with cancer, which forced him to quit the E Street Band in November. He briefly rejoined the band in Indiana on March 20 when he performed eight songs with his former bandmates.

Bruce Springsteen's Cousin Found Dead in Hotel Room

Bruce Springsteen's cousin and assistant road manager was found dead in the Kansas City's Intercontinental Hotel Monday, not long before Springsteen and his band were to take to the stage.

"Lenny Sullivan, Bruce's cousin and the assistant road manager of the E Street Band for the last 10 years, passed away today at the age of 36," a statement on Springsteen's Web site read. "A warm and sensitive person, he was beloved by Bruce, the Band, the crew, and the entire Thrill Hill family."

The death caused the cancellation of the show that night in Kansas City, Mo., with all tickets refunded and promises to return to the area "at the earliest opportunity."

Kansas City police said they are investigating, but that the death wasn't considered suspicious.

It's been a tough year for Springsteen, 59, who was accused of adultery in a friend's divorce proceedings in the spring, and whose wife, Patti Scialfa, suffered a riding accident in April. Last year, the E Street Band's longtime keyboardist, Danny Federici, died at age 58.

Springsteen's next scheduled appearance is at Madison Square Garden Thursday for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert.

Springsteen Backs Gay Marriage

Veteran rocker BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN is urging his fans to support a controversial bill to legalise gay marriage in his native New Jersey.

The Born To Run hitmaker recently posted a statement on his website, backing a gay marriage bill that's up for a vote in the state's Senate on Thursday (10Dec09).

The hitmaker wrote, "I've long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that, 'The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is - a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law.' I couldn't agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now."

A state Senate committee approved the bill by one vote on Monday (07Dec09), although Democrat supporters concede the it may fall short of the 21 votes needed to pass on Thursday.
