SCHEDULED: Grammy-winning British band Coldplay, fronted by Chris Martin, have announced that they will release their as-yet untitled third album in June, followed by a world tour, which will kick off in their native UK later that month. "We've spent a long time in the studio and haven't played a gig for 18 months so we can't wait to get out on tour and play our new songs live," said guitarist Jonny Buckland.

Chris Martin Hints at Coldplay Split

Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin set tongues wagging last night when he hinted the band might be splitting up.

As he accepted one of the band's two awards at the Brit Awards in London, Martin said, "You won't see us at one of these for many, many years. We won't see you for a long time. I mean it. It's going to be years before we have the chance to say this again."

He prompted even more speculation when, later in the evening, he said: "We got to go. People are fed up with us, and so are we."

Coldplay won for best single ("Speed of Sound") and best album (X&Y).

Despite Martin's proclamations, Coldplay's London rep insists the hiatus will be no more than the standard break bands take between churning out albums. Perhaps Martin just wants to spend more time with his pregnant wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, and their daughter Apple.

Britain's Coldplay Working on New Album

By JULIE WATSON

Associated Press Writer

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin said Sunday his band is working on a new album featuring what he called a quintessential song that everybody should hear "before we die."

Martin and his band spoke hours before the final concert of a Latin American tour that took them to Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

The band said it plans to return to the studio after a two-year hiatus to record an album that will have a different sound from "X&Y," which has sold more than 2 million copies since it was released in 2005.

"I think for a long time people felt like we were a band in black-and-white, and now we feel like because we have this incredible job, now we can do whatever we like and try all kinds of new things," Martin said.

He added that the record will include what could be Coldplay's best song yet.

"In order for us to get excited about a new album, we have to have one song that we feel like everybody has to hear ... before we die, otherwise we'll be terribly depressed," Martin said. "So luckily with this new record we're going to make, we have that one song."

"I can't tell you about it, but it's basically genius," he joked.

Martin, who celebrated his 30th birthday on a Mexican beach last week, also said he is proud of Coldplay's activism to raise awareness about free trade practices around the globe and support poor farmers in developing countries.

Martin is a spokesman for the British aid group Oxfam's "Make Trade Fair" campaign, and Oxfam volunteers provide information on free trade and distribute petitions at Coldplay's concerts.

The singer said he has hope for the future with less than two years left in President Bush's term. "I think we're all excited, everyone in the world is excited about the American elections next year," he said. "Sometimes it's easy to give up all hope."

The Daily Crusty: Chris Martin

Um…like…easy there Mr Gwyneth. Bono you are not. Yet. Perhaps ever.

So I like Coldplay. More than like. You could say that once upon a time I loved Coldplay. Have all their CDs, DVDs, know all the words to their songs, seen them in concert 3 times…big fan. Until the last album X + Y. Was the strangest thing – it was great at first. Then after too many listens, every track became like nails on a chalkboard. And his lyrics were suck ass weak. And the band’s attitude got suck ass annoying, especially the way Chris went on to describe “Fix You” – perhaps the best song on X + Y – as “the most important thing we’ve ever done”, like it was destined to rival “With or Without You”.

Whatever.

Love that Gwyneth had to go and marry a dude with such an inflated sense of self importance…though I’m not sure she would approve of his manners.

Press conference in Brazil the other day, in describing the new record Coldplay will be releasing later this year, Chris revealed that the album will include “the one song that we feel like everybody has to hear … before we die…”.

Who talks like that??? No…seriously….who talks like that???

And then he lost his shit when asked if he’d ever sing a duet with his wife, Chris’s nasty response was: What’s your favourite sexual position? - which was followed by his pontification on the commercialisation of music these days as if his own band isn’t one of the most commercial ones out there, and then he abruptly left the interview when another Gwyneth question came up.

Sounds like someone’s developing a serious case of Guy Ritchie disease, non?

Coldplay Release Tracklisting For Upcoming Record

Chris Martin and his bandmates have finally released the running order for Coldplay's fourth studio album, Vida La Vida.

The record, whose alternative title is the cheery-sounding Death And All His Friends, is due to be released on June 16th/17th, according to the band's official website.

It is the second Coldplay album to restrict itself to just ten tracks, following their 2000 debut Parachutes, while 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head and 2005's X&Y both featured 11.

Among the more unusual titles are 42, Strawberry Swing and Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love. Its influences reportedly include Spanish-based acoustic guitar.

"The powers-that-be tell me it'll be available for general consumption on June 16th/17th, depending on where you live," a writer signing himself off 'prospekt' on the website says.

"We'll try to release a track or two before then," it adds, meaning Coldplay fans struggling to cope with the two-month wait will have something to get their aural teeth into before then.

Gwyneth Paltrow: New Coldplay Album Is 'Brilliant'

People

By Dimi Gaidatzi

Posted Image

Okay – so she's a bit biased. But Gwyneth Paltrow says Coldplay's new album is "brilliant."

But beyond that, she was keeping mum at the London premiere of Iron Man, which she attended without husband Chris Martin, the band's frontman.

"Don't tell him I told you that," she told Sky News on the red carpet, wowing the crowds in her lacy dress and sky-high stiletto heels by Alexander McQueen. "I can't talk about it. He gets furious!"

(Although Martin is based in the U.K., he and Paltrow routinely avoid appearing together at events. "You will never see us out publicly," she recently told the U.K. Glamour. "We just don't want to be one of those couples").

As for her new, shorter blond locks, the 35-year-old Oscar-winner told reporters she simply wanted "a change."

Paltrow also chatted briefly about her new workout buddy, the famously fit Madonna. (The two have recently been spotted together at the singer's private London gym.) She said that the two pals get together to break a sweat whenever "we are in the same city."

Coldplay Buy Bakery

Coldplay have bought an old bakery.

The band think the "ugly" building, in London's Primrose Hill, is the perfect place for their new headquarters away from fans and paparazzi.

Singer Chris Martin explained: "For years I used to walk past this building everyday and think, 'What an ugly place.'

"Then one day a 'to let' sign appeared outside. I thought, 'Hmmm that place is so ugly, I bet no one would bother us if we move in there.' "

It will be the band's first 'home' together since their university days, and they plan to be based there while promoting their new album, 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends'.

The LP, the follow-up to 2005's 'X and Y' has had its release date brought forward and will now hit shops across the world on June 12.

Coldplay have announced they will play two free shows, in New York and London, to support the album's release.

Fans must keep checking the band's website to find out how to attend.

Coldplay to help ESPN market European Championship soccer

Coldplay and ESPN are teaming up on a soccer marketing campaign.

The rock band's music will be featured in promotions for ESPN's coverage next month of the European Championship soccer tournament, the sports network announced Wednesday.

ESPN agreed to incorporate music from Coldplay's new release, "Viva La Vida," into game and studio production. The quadrennial tournament is scheduled for June 7-29 in Austria and Switzerland. The CD is due out June 12.

ESPN and ABC, both owned by The Walt Disney Co., have broadcast rights for the tournament in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America and India.

Two of the 31 matches will be televised by ABC: a quarterfinal on June 21 and the final on June 29, which will be part of a doubleheader that opens with David Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy at D.C. United.

Seven games will be on ESPN, 17 on ESPN2 and five on ESPN Classic. This marks the first time the entire Euros will be shown live on non-pay-per-view U.S. television.

ESPN said the idea is to demonstrate the global importance of soccer and create greater interest in the sport "even among American fans."

"This is the first time ESPN has created a global marketing campaign with a unified strategy, message and advertising campaign," said Seth Ader, a senior director of sports marketing for ESPN. "The campaign captures the passion for European soccer."

The song they didn't write? Coldplay are accused of plagiarism by American band

By Guy Adams in Los Angeles

Thursday, 19 June 2008

AFP/Getty Images

Chris Martin attended a Creaky Boards concert in New York last year

It was all going so predictably well. Coldplay's new album went straight to No 1 on Sunday, selling 300,000 copies in three days; concerts sold out; that iTunes ad was everywhere. Even their notoriously sniffy critics in the music press seemed, with the odd exception, unusually muted.

Then, things took a sudden turn for the worse – with a plagiarism row. Yesterday, the band was forced to issue a categorical denial of allegations that they copied the title track to their new record, Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends from a little-known US group, Creaky Boards.

In a video posted on the video-sharing website YouTube, Andrew Hoepfner, Creaky Boards' singer and songwriter, claimed that the melody of Coldplay's song, "Viva La Vida", is pinched from a track he wrote last year called, ironically, "The Songs I Didn't Write".

He blamed Chris Martin for the alleged artistic theft, saying that Coldplay's frontman attended a Creaky Boards concert in New York last year. "We were flattered when we thought we saw Chris Martin in the crowd," said Mr Hoepfner. "He seemed pretty into it... Maybe TOO into it?"

The clip, which was first posted on Sunday, rapidly went viral. By last night, it had been watched by nearly 300,000 people, many thousands of whom had typed comments remarking upon the various similarities between the two tracks. In an industry where even small chord sequences can become subject of costly copyright disputes, allegations of plagiarism are as potentially damaging to a musician's finances as they are to their reputation.

Little surprise, then, that Coldplay responded with a vigorous denial. "We totally refute their claims, and there are two facts that make it easy to disprove them," said the band's spokesman Murray Chalmers. "First, on the night in October when the band say Chris Martin was watching them, he was actually working at the Air Studio in London, and we can prove that. Second, even if he had been at the gig, "Viva la Vida" was written and demoed seven months before the night in question, so it couldn't possibly have been copied."

Sources close to the band said they were unlikely to pursue legal action against Creaky Boards, since it would "look bad" to start a David versus Goliath lawsuit against a group of young musicians. They are, however, pushing for them to publicly withdraw the allegations of plagiarism.

The two tracks have different lyrics, say the Coldplay camp. Although certain elements of their melody sound remarkably similar, the band say this is due to simple coincidence rather than a case of artistic theft.

Either way, the trite nature of Mr Hoepfner's video clip has succeeded in gaining a new following for his band, and was driving traffic to their MySpace page. The YouTube video concludes: "I wish Coldplay the best of luck. If they ever want to collaborate, I've got some microphones we could use in my bedroom."

Creaky Boards' video outlining the similiarities between the two songs

Coldplay are recording several live TV performances to promote their record in the US, but are steering clear of major interviews, following last week's incident on BBC Radio 4 when Martin walked out of an interview with the arts show Front Row, saying he did not like "having to talk about things".

Rock royalty vs pop paupers

Coldplay

* Chris Martin is widely considered one of the most influential musicians of his generation, and was acclaimed as "heir apparent to Bono" on the band's last tour in 2006.

* Coldplay boast 447,546 friends on MySpace and 222,985 fans on Facebook.

* Coldplay are signed to Parlophone, part of EMI.

Creaky Boards

* Andrew Hoepfner's biggest endorsement so far comes from a New York free paper, The Village Broadsheet: "His songs hit on a strange-but-perfect kink-swing tradition"

* Creaky Boards have 1,873 friends on MySpace. They don't bother with Facebook.

* Creaky Boards are still looking for a record deal.

* Andrew Hoepfner's marital status is unknown.

Coldplay didn't copy us, says American band

The American band which accused Coldplay of stealing their music has admitted that the allegations might be unfounded.

Creaky Boards, a little-known US group, had claimed that Coldplay's latest single, Viva La Vida, was taken from a song they wrote last year.

In a video posted on YouTube, the video sharing website, the group's singer said that The Songs I Didn't Write bore a "striking" similarity to Coldplay's new single.

Andrew Hoepfner pointed the finger firmly at Chris Martin, saying that Coldplay's frontman attended a Creaky Boards concert in New York last year.

However, the singer has now taken back the accusations.

"As this thing unfolds, I'm not sure if there was any copying going on," he said. "I think it's possible that Coldplay and I are just heavily influenced by 'The Legend of Zelda [a fantasy adventure computer game].

Coldplay had categorically denied the allegations.

Murray Chalmers, the band's spokesman, said that Viva La Vida was written last March, more than six months before Creaky Boards claim that Chris went to see them.

"We totally refute their claims,' he said. "Chris has never heard of the band. On the night that they claim he was watching them, he was actually working at the Air Studio in London."

Comic Actor Chris Martin

Chris Martin should be a comedy star.

The Coldplay singer - who is married to actress Gwyneth Paltrow - has been urged by 'Goldfinger' rockers Ash to widen his career and seek acting roles after impressing them with his appearance in their unreleased horror movie 'Slashed'.

Ash singer Tim Wheeler said: "He was the best thing in it. He's a really, really good actor. He could be really strong in comedy."

Ash's 2001 movie also starred Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl, 'Play' hitmaker Moby and actor James Nesbitt, with Chris appearing as Sherbert Bones, an FBI investigator hired to track down a supernatural serial killer alongside fellow agent Datsun Ford, played by his bandmate, guitarist Jonny Buckland.

Although the film has remained unreleased, Tim hasn't ruled out airing the movie in future.

He added: "We're still talking about using that footage. A lot of people will want to see Chris Martin getting axed to death."

Chris Martin's Tight Success

Chris Martin owes his success to tight trousers.

The Coldplay frontman claims the best advice he was ever given was to change his wardrobe slightly, which he thinks boosted the band's success in the US.

He said: "What's the best piece of advice I've been given? Michael Stipe from R.E.M. once told me to wear tighter trousers. We did and we had a number one in America."

While the singer is happy with his wardrobe on stage, he admits some of the props the group have used haven't always gone down so well.

He added to Q magazine: "We had a Chinese dragon's head on stage last year. I came offstage and said, 'God, that dragon bit was good, wasn't it?' The rest of the band just stayed quiet."

On their last tour, the group - also comprising Johnny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman - donned military-style outfits and have previously revealed they stitched the garments themselves.

Guitarist Johnny said: "Guy came up with the direction. Then we all got together in our studio to work on the outfits. We had someone who helped us make the jackets and trousers. We made them ourselves. We really wanted this whole album to be homemade again, we wanted to take it back and have it all come from us."
