Gloria Estefan

Recommended Posts

From Liz Smith:

SO WHAT new treasure have they discovered at legendary Machu Picchu in Peru - site of the lost city of the ancient Incas? Gloria Estefan ! The Cuban singing star has just returned from a four-day video shoot for her next single, "Wrapped." This is the first video ever to be filmed at the mysterious location in the Andes (Gloria directed it herself). The air up there is mighty thin, but luckily Gloria didn't have to belt it out live, just lip-sync to her own recording. The video will be seen in August, the single debuts this week.

Aside from stirring the spirits of the Incas, Estefan has a new album coming out in September - her first English-language disc in six years. Also a concert stint at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas come October. After that? Well, how about Gloria as Celia Cruz, in a biopic of that amazing icon's life and career? Aside from singing, they have those strong Cuban roots.

I saw Cruz once, at a benefit show a few years back. There were a lot of talents on stage, all younger, all supposedly "hotter," career-wise. Celia blew the roof off the joint. People who had never heard of her, were ripping the chairs from the floor. What a woman!

Gloria Estefan Could Have Been a Spy

Had fate worked differently for Gloria Estefan, today the Cuban singer would be working as a spy. Thanks to her ability with languages, when she was younger the CIA asked her to work for them, reports People En Español.

"They realized that I was someone who could pass as a regular person without raising any eyebrow. So the CIA approached me and wanted me to train in their Atlanta headquarters," the singer, 52, said on the Telemundo Al rojo vivo with MarÍa Celeste Arrarás show.

The offer came when Estefan worked as an interpreter at the Miami International Airport Customs Department. Besides Spanish and English, the singer is fluent in French.

But it was her mother who convinced Estefan not even to entertain the idea, because she had suffered enough seeing her husband work as a bodyguard for Cuban dictator-president Fulgencio Batista, which led to his imprisonment at the Bay of Pigs invasion.

Estefan's Panic Over Lost Jewels

GLORIA ESTEFAN threw officials at Bulgari's 125th anniversary party into a panic on Monday night (16Nov09) after she lost a $220,000 (£137,500) bracelet.

The Latina superstar was a special guest at the celebration for the luxury goods giant in Miami, Florida along with singer Ricky Martin and Bulgari boss Francesco Trapani.

She became frantic after losing a hugely-expensive Bulgari diamond bracelet as she entered the city's Vizcaya Museum, kick-starting a 30-minute search of the building's grounds.

But Estefan went on to enjoy her evening after the gems were found by her husband and a team of minders, according to New York gossip column PageSix.

A source tells the publication, "Gloria went to say hello to Ricky and show off her jewellery to Francesco - but the bracelet was gone.

"Her husband, Emilio, ran outside. After 30 minutes searching on the cobblestone walkway in the dark with a security team, he found it and returned it to Gloria."
