ElleDriver 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2008 UK music festival defends Jay-Z decision Organizers of one of Britain's best-known music festivals on Tuesday defended their decision to book Jay-Z as their headline act after Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher blamed the rapper for disappointing ticket sales. The outdoor Glastonbury fest is a cornerstone of Britain's music calendar. But it has yet to sell out this year, in contrast to past years when tickets were snapped up within hours. Gallagher, whose band headlined the festival in 1995 and 2004, said rap was to blame. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Gallagher said in an interview, an audio of which was posted to the British Broadcasting Corp.'s Web site Monday. "If you break it, people ain't gonna go. I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? ... No chance." He explained that the inclusion of a hip-hop act went against the festival's tradition of guitar music, adding: "I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. No way. No. It's wrong." Glastonbury Festival co-organizer Emily Eavis said the 38-year-old festival had a long history of attracting rap acts, including Cypress Hill and the Roots. She said the media stir over Gallagher's comments revealed an "innate conservatism" in some parts of British society. "There is also an interesting undercurrent in the suggestion that a black, U.S. hip-hop artist shouldn't be playing in front of what many perceive to be a white, middle-class audience. I'm not sure what to call it, at least not in public, but this is something that causes me some disquiet," she said in an article published Tuesday in The Independent newspaper. Hot Spots In town for his sold-out Hollywood Bowl show, newlywed Jay-Z hung out at a couple of swank L.A. joints with his pal Usher on Thursday. Kicking off their night at Katsuya Hollywood, the duo chatted away over dinner at a table policed by two bodyguards. Following the meal, the music moguls headed to the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where the night before Jay-Z hosted a private dinner and afterparty, joined by his wife, Beyoncé. Arriving just after 11:30 p.m., Usher and Jay-Z, who wore shades, settled into a VIP table in the back of the Roosevelt’s club, Teddy’s, to enjoy the weekly jazz night, sponsored by Hennessey. The guys quietly sipped champagne, then made their way out about an hour later, leaving the partying to such other celebs as Drew Barrymore's boyfriend Justin Long. Earlier in the evening, Jay-Z watched the Yankees-Red Sox game at Parlor, an upscale sports bar, with four other friends and his security team. Scarsdale Town Clerk Donna Conkling tells PEOPLE the license – which lists the wedding date as April 4 – was received on Friday afternoon. The couple applied for the license just three days before the ceremony attended by friends and family, including Beyoncé's mother Tina Knowles, her father/manager Mathew, her sister Solange, her Destiny's Child pals Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, and the couple's friend Gwyneth Paltrow. Although the couple's license was filed more than five days after the wedding – as required by law – Conkling tells PEOPLE it's expected to be processed with the state without a penalty. (No special celeb treatment here: Conkling says the penalty is frequently waived.) Though sources confirmed the wedding to PEOPLE, the couple have remained silent about their nuptials. Hollyscoop has learned exclusively through multiple sources that Beyonce is expecting. A source close to the couple revealed, "Beyonce is 100% pregnant, which is why the couple rushed their wedding." The source also told Hollyscoop that all the friends and family that attended the ultra private wedding were all aware that Beyonce was already expecting. Our source added that Beyonce is in her early stages, but don’t expect this star to come out with a confirmation statement anytime soon. The newlywed, 26, is working in N.Y.C. with production duo Chris "Tricky" Stewart and Kuk Harrell. "She's a professional," Tricky tells PEOPLE. "She loves what she does and works her [butt] off. Right now she's basically doing three to four songs a day and that's unheard of." Tricky, who worked with Rihanna and Jay-Z on "Umbrella" and Mariah Carey on "Touch My Body,” said the newly-minted husband hasn't visited the studio, but don't count out a collaboration between the newlyweds.
