U2 in 3D

The concert film just got a whole lot more "real" life. The film was shot in South America during the band's "Vertigo" tour, and was shot in 3D. The treatment was trying to recreate the atmosphere of a gig and take fans on a thrilling visual ride.

The film combines camera angles that soar over the audience of up to 80,000, zoom in to within inches of the performers, join them on stage and look back into the stadium.

At one point, U2's lead singer Bono reaches out towards the 3D camera and looks as if he is about to step into the cinema.

Journalists at a preview screening of a 55-minute version of what will eventually be an 80-90 minute picture, were given glasses through which to view the film and were generally impressed with the authenticity of the images and sound.

"Not every film will benefit, in my opinion, from 3D technology," said executive producer Sandy Climan. "I think when you have the choice of 3D and 2D, you will choose 3D overwhelmingly," he told a news conference. "You ain't seen nothing yet."

I think I'll have to see it to believe it.

U2 Sign 12 Year Live Nation Deal

Irish rockers U2 have followed in MADONNA's footsteps by signing a 12-year deal with music promoters Live Nation.

The agreement will see the band continue to release records through their longtime record label Universal Music, but Live Nation, which has been handling U2's tours since 1980, will take over the group's merchandising as well as digital and branding rights.

The deal follows the ground-breaking recording and touring contract Madonna signed with the firm last year (07), which was rumoured to be worth in excess of $120 million (GBP60 million) over 10 years.

And although financial details of the contract have not been disclosed, frontman Bono insists the deal has been on the cards for a long time.

He says, "We've been dating for over 20 years now. It's about time we tied the knot."

And the band's manager, Paul MCGuinness, is convinced the Live Nation collaboration is perfect timing.

He adds, "U2 are doing their best work right now, on record and in concert. The opportunity to integrate U2 and Live Nation's vision of the future is a great extension of our established business."

U2 Fined For Noisy Shows

U2 have incurred a $53,000 fine for breaching noise regulations during three concerts in their native Ireland earlier this year.

The group played to thousands of fans at Dublin's Croke Park in July but residents complained to council officials about the excessive noise.

An investigation proved the rockers played louder than regulations allow a total of 12 times during the trio of shows - and Dublin City Council has hit concert promoters MCD with the fine.

But the $53,000 amount has angered locals, who have branded it "paltry" compared to what the band earned on the trek.

Pat Gates, chair of the Croke Park Area Residents' Alliance, says, "It is a paltry penalty, it really isn't a disincentive. They would write that off in terms of planning for such things. Any fines that do accrue to the city council should be invested back into the local community as they were the ones that put up with it."
