FBI says body found is that of Hudson's nephew, 7

CHICAGO – A top FBI official said Monday that a body found in an SUV is believed to be that of Jennifer Hudson's missing 7-year-old nephew, the focus of a desperate search since the Oscar winner's mother and brother were found shot to death in their home three days earlier.

While the body has not been positively identified, FBI Deputy Director John S. Pistole said authorities believe it to be that of Julian King, who also lived in the home.

Chicago police said the body of a black male child was found shortly after 7 a.m. in the rear seat of an SUV. An autopsy was planned for Tuesday.

The SUV was found parked on the street in a neighborhood of brownstone homes and apartment buildings, and matched the one sought in an Amber Alert issued after Hudson's mother and brother were found slain Friday, police Cmdr. Wayne Gulliford said.

In Washington, Pistole said at a news conference on child exploitation that authorities found a body "who we believe to be the missing victim in Chicago, the nephew of Jennifer Hudson. We are working with Chicago police to get a positive identification of the victim."

Hudson had offered $100,000 Sunday for information leading to Julian's safe return. He is the son of Jennifer Hudson's sister, Julia Hudson. Telephone and e-mail messages left Monday for Hudson's publicist, who had been releasing statements on behalf of the family, were not answered.

Chicago police have characterized the killings as "domestic related" and have been questioning William Balfour, who is the estranged husband of Julia Hudson and is being held in state custody on a parole violation. Balfour is not the boy's father and has not been charged in the slayings.

Balfour, 27, was taken into custody Friday by Chicago police for questioning in the killings. On Sunday, he was transferred to the Illinois Department of Corrections "based on his active parole violation unrelated to this investigation."

Records from the Corrections Department show Balfour is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.

Balfour's mother, Michele Balfour, has said Hudson's mother kicked Balfour out of the family home last winter. She denied her son had anything to do with the killings.

Corrections spokeswoman Januari Smith said Balfour would probably remain in state custody until the Illinois Prisoner Review Board looked at his case. She would not say where Balfour was being held, and it was unclear whether Balfour had an attorney.

Hudson, who won an Academy Award in 2007 for her role in "Dreamgirls," was in Chicago during the weekend. The medical examiner's office confirmed Hudson, 27, identified the bodies of her mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson. The deaths were ruled homicides.

Neighbors and well-wishers brought stuffed animals and other items to a makeshift memorial outside Donerson's two-story white clapboard home as news of Monday's discovery spread.

"Everybody knows Jennifer Hudson, but I would be here even if it was little Suzy on the corner," said Tacara Juarez, 26, who doesn't know the family but lives in the neighborhood.

On Sunday, Hudson appealed to the public for help, offering the reward and asking any information be given to Chicago police.

"Jennifer and her family appreciate the enormous amount of love, support and prayers they have received while she and her family try to cope with this tragedy and continue the search for Julian," said a statement from her publicist.

Jennifer Hudson's Nephew Died of Multiple Gunshot Wounds

Posted Image

Julian King, the 7-year-old nephew of Jennifer Hudson, died of multiple gunshot wounds, Chicago's Cook County medical examiner's office said Tuesday.

His death has been ruled a homicide.

Cook County spokesman Sean Howard declined to say where the child suffered wounds or how long he had been dead, citing an ongoing Chicago police investigation, according to The Associated Press.

The announcement follows an autopsy on Julian's body, which was found in the back of an SUV three days after Hudson's mother and brother were shot to death.

Chicago's police chief Jody Weis is confident "we'll have some evidence that will link us to the killer," according to the AP.

While no one has been charged in the slayings, police are eyeing William Balfour - Julia's 27-year-old ex-husband - as a person of interest.

Citing a police source, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the motive in the killings could be related to ongoing disputes between the suspect and his estranged wife, Julia Hudson, and her family.

One of those disputes was over unpaid car payments, the paper reports.

AP source: Hudson suspect refused polygraph test

CHICAGO (AP) - The convicted felon suspected in the slayings of actress-singer Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew told police he is innocent but balked at taking a lie-detector test, a police official said.

William Balfour, the 27-year-old stepfather of Hudson's nephew and estranged husband of her sister, told detectives he had a good relationship with the Hudson family, the police official said Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

When detectives asked Balfour to take the polygraph test, he stopped cooperating and refused to take the test, said the official, who is familiar with the investigation.

Balfour has been at the center of the investigation since shortly after the bodies of Hudson's mother, 57-year-old Darnell Donerson, and brother, 29-year-old Jason Hudson, were found Friday inside their home on Chicago's South Side. The body of Balfour's stepson, 7-year-old Julian King, was discovered Monday in an SUV on the city's West Side. All three had been shot.

Balfour had not been charged as of Wednesday and investigators were still gathering evidence and following up on leads, the official said. However, the official said police do not believe anyone else was involved in the killings.

It is possible that someone else drove the SUV with the boy's body inside and parked it on the West Side, the official said, but Balfour is "the only suspect in the killings (and there is) nothing to link a second individual" to them.

A police spokeswoman declined to comment on the official's statements.

Balfour's mother, Michele Balfour, has said Hudson's mother kicked Balfour out of the family home last winter. She denied her son had anything to do with the killings.

It was unclear whether Balfour had an attorney.

On Wednesday, police found a gun in a vacant lot around the corner from where the SUV was parked.

"There was also some small bits of evidence recovered," Deputy Chief Nicholas Roti said. He did not elaborate and declined to take questions.

The gun, discovered in thick shrubs, was sent to the Illinois State Police crime lab for testing, Roti said.

Records show that Balfour was arrested with cocaine in his car in June, but authorities declined to return him to prison on a parole violation.

Corrections Department spokesman Derek Schnapp said officials who reviewed the cocaine-possession case against Balfour determined "the evidence that was presented during that time wouldn't have necessarily warranted a violation."

A judge dismissed the charge in July for lack of probable cause, but under the strict rules of the state's parole program, Balfour could have gone back to prison just for the arrest.

Balfour served seven years for a 1999 attempted murder and vehicular hijacking conviction.

The Illinois Department of Corrections issued a warrant for Balfour on Saturday for violating terms of his parole by possessing a weapon and failing to attend anger management counseling and a substance abuse program, according to his parole history report.

Pal: Jennifer Hudson's Family Didn't Take Balfour's Threats Seriously

Posted Image

A friend of Jennifer Hudson says he tried to warn the family about William "Flex" Balfour, who is currently considered a "person of interest" in the shooting deaths of Hudson's mom, Darnell; brother, Jason and 7-year-old nephew, Julian.

Balfour, 27 - who is divorced from Hudson's sister, Julia, a bus driver - got into a huge fight with Julia, Darnell and Jason about a month ago, a neighbor says in the newest issue of Us Weekly. James Peyton, Hudson's ex-fiance, was also present.

See Jennifer Hudson's family album.

"Flex tried to start a fistfight with Jason, and James beat up Flex," the neighbor adds.

Shortly after, Flex began to threaten the family, saying "he would kill Julia and mess up everyone in the house," the source tells Us.

The supposed reason of the feud? TMZ.com reports Balfour clashed with the family after Julia claimed he sold one of their cars without permission.

"Flex was crazy, but Jason never took him seriously," the source tells Us. "Jason always thought he would be safe, that he could protect himself."

The estranged couple had screaming matches, and had "been having problems, but I never expected anything like this," neighbor Angela Russell admits to Us.

(Flex's mother, Michele Davis Balfour, insists her son "had nothing to do with this.")

Balfour is currently being held on violation of parole stemming from an attempted murder conviction in 1999. The AP reports that he was arrested on June 19 for allegedly having a rock of crack cocaine in his car - but his parole was not revoked then.

Meanwhile, Hudson is determined to hold her family together as she grieves for her mother, brother and nephew - whom she was especially close to.

"Jennifer was like [Julian's] second mom," Ernest Moore, a neighbor who is related by marriage, tells Us. "Whenever she was around, she spent a lot of time with the boy."

What's really sad is the fact that the tabloids are profiting off of this awful tragedy. I can only hope that they are donating any profits to the family or a charity for victims right.

Jennifer Hudson "Still in Shock" at Chicago Hotel

Jennifer Hudson has been holed up in a downtown Chicago hotel with loved ones and friends as she prepares to bury three family members.

"She is still in shock," a source tells E! News. "She hasn't gone out much at all and has a lot of security around her."

E! News has confirmed that Hudson checked into the Trump International Hotel & Tower on Oct. 24, the day her mother, Darnell Donerson, and brother Jason Hudson were shot and killed in Donerson's home and nephew Julian King was reported missing.

Donald Trump himself offered up the hotel suite for Hudson and her family to stay in free of charge.

Hudson had been in Florida when she received the news and immediately boarded a flight north.

Since her arrival last Friday, Hudson has rarely left her hotel suite, sources say. She has had her cousins run errands, including picking up personal items from her downtown condo and bringing in food.

Hudson hasn't been seen in public since identifying her nephew's body at the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office on Monday.

Sources close to the Oscar winner tell E! News that her family and fiancé David Otunga have been her rock throughout the week. In fact, Otunga has been with her around the clock.

"David's been by her side through this whole tragedy," a family source says. "He has totally been there for her."

William Balfour Arrested in Jennifer Hudson Family Murders

By Hilary Shenfeld and Jeff Truesdell

Posted Image

Jennifer Hudson's estranged brother-in-law, William Balfour, was arrested Monday in the slayings of the Oscar winner's mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew, according to Chicago police.

Formal charges have not yet been brought by the Cook County prosecutor's office, but Balfour was transferred from an Illinois state prison – where he has been held on suspicion of a parole violation – back into police custody, says police spokeswoman Monique Bond.

Balfour, 27, who is separated from Hudson's sister, Julia, was arrested in the first-degree murders of Hudson's mother Darnell Donerson, 57, brother Jason Hudson, 29, and his own stepson, Julian King, 7.

The bodies of Donerson and Hudson were found shot to death Oct. 24 in the family home on Chicago's South Side by Hudson's sister, Julia.

The body of King, Julia's son, was found three days later in the backseat of Jason's abandoned Chevrolet Suburban parked 10 miles from the family's home. All died from gunshot wounds.

Contentious Relationship

Balfour, who previously served prison time for attempted murder and car hijacking, was arrested hours after the first victims were discovered.

He and Julia Hudson married on Dec. 30, 2006, and initially lived together at the family home. But a contentious relationship, marked by fights over money and infidelities according to family members and neighbors, led to Balfour being thrown out of the house in recent months. He had voiced threats against Julia and her family, sources say. His mother, Michele Balfour, told reporters her son had discussed divorce.

No motive for the slayings was disclosed, but police told the Chicago Tribune that on the morning of the killings Julia Hudson reported to her job as a school bus driver and learned that her paycheck had been garnered due to unmade payments on a car that Balfour had taken earlier. She then called Balfour.

Sources – who reconstructed events based on conversations with a girlfriend of Balfour's – told the Tribune that Balfour then went to the Hudson home and fired through the front door, striking Jason Hudson. Darnell Donerson was allegedly shot as she entered the living room.

Search for Missing Boy

King was reported missing from the home after Julia Hudson came home about 3 p.m. and alerted police. The boy was the subject of a three-day search until his body was found inside a white SUV parked on a West Side street early on Oct. 27. A bullet lodged in the vehicle suggests he was shot in the car, police sources said.

In response, the family's Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church acknowledged the nature of the attacks by establishing the Hudson-King Domestic Violence Prevention Fund. Donations can be made c/o Seaway Bank and Trust Co., P.O. Box 19522, Chicago, Ill., 60619.

Lawyer: William Balfour Angry Over Wife's Dating, Kills Hudson Family

Wednesday December 3, 2008

Prosecutors allege William "Flex" Balfour killed Jennifer Hudson's brother, mother and nephew because he was angry that his estranged wife was dating other men.

At a hearing Wednesday, prosecutors claimed Balfour came to the family's home the morning of the Oct. 24 murders and confronted his estranged wife Julia Hudson, The Associated Press reports.

Balfour and Julia Hudson left together but Balfour returned to the home; the bodies of Hudson's mother and brother were found there later that day. The body of Julia Hudson's 7-year-old son, Julian, was found in an SUV three days later.

Although his defense attorney insists Balfour is innocent, a judge denied bail. The prosecutor said Balfour confessed to the shootings on Oct. 24 when asked for an alibi.

According to the Chicago Tribune, prosecutors debunked statements Balfour made to Chicago police.

For instance, the suspect told detectives he was at home at the time of the murders, but cell phone records place him in Hudson's neighborhood. Balfour also told police he'd used public transportation to return home after stopping by Hudson's house earlier in the day, but records show his "L" card had not been used within two days, and he did not appear on surveillance cameras in the train station.

Balfour also denied having a gun, but multiple witnesses saw him with a gun - or heard him say he had one. Prosecutors also said the gun used in the shootings belonged to Jason Hudson - who was murdered - and Balfour had taken it without permission from his bedroom several months earlier.

The suspect's defense attorney, Joshua Kutnick, said there are no witnesses to the shootings, and no connection between Balfour and the weapon that was believed to have been used in the murders. Balfour's girlfriend told police he confessed and that she saw him with a gun that looked like the murder weapon, sources told the Chicago Tribune.

Balfour - who was charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of home invasion Tuesday - will be held at the suburban Chicago Stateville Correctional Center.

A preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 30, a spokesperson for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office tells Usmagazine.com.

Jennifer Hudson's Wedding Countdown

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jennifer Hudson is set to marry "real soon".

The 'Dreamgirls' star and her fiance, attorney David Otunga, could tie the knot as early as this month, according to friends.

A source said: "It's going to be real soon. Some people think Valentine's Day (14.02.09). They're head over heels in love."

The pair are believed to have grown even close in recent months after David helped Jennifer through the worst period of her life.

Last October, Jennifer's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, brother Jason, 29, and seven-year old nephew Julian, were shot dead.

The tragedy forced David and Jennifer - who got engaged last September after David asked Darnell if he could marry her daughter - put their original wedding plans on hold.

The source added to National Enquirer magazine: "She has gone through the worst nightmare of her life and she's finally coming out of it. Everyone is thrilled Jennifer is finally able to move forward again.

"She says she knows her mother would want her to have a family of her own."

Jennifer recently returned to the stage, performing at the US Super Bowl last weekend. She will also sing at the Recording Academy's MusiCares Person of the Year Gala on February 6 and the Grammy Awards on February 8.

Fit Mother Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson says having a caesarean section was like working out.

The singer-and-actress - who gave birth to son David, her first child with fiance David Otunga, in August - insists she was in no more pain after the operation to deliver David than she is when she goes to the gym.

She said: "Everybody told me how much it was going to hurt afterwards but I think I have a different tolerance for pain than others. By the night after I had the baby, I'm like, 'Look, I can't sit in this bed anymore. I've got to get up!'

"I've been up and about since he was born. To me, the pain is no different than when you work out a muscle you've never worked out before and it's sore."

Jennifer says her son's personality is already starting to develop, adding his favourite things are his bottle and having his diaper changed.

The 28-year-old star explained to People magazine: "He has a lot of personality, like David. He's always been a good sleeper. His favourite time to smile now is diaper changes. Or when he spits up on you - he just cracks up like he thinks it's the funniest thing. And his bottle is his pacifier. His best friend is that bottle - that's all he wants."

Hudson: 'I Want To Keep Eating For Two'

Jennifer Hudson has revealed that she longs to carry on eating as much as she did during her pregnancy.

The singer and actress, who had son David in August with partner David Otunga, said that she has to fight hunger pangs in order to lose her baby weight.

Hudson told ETOnline: "The trick is getting back into your old ways. If I could go around eating like I ate while I was pregnant, that'd be the way to go.

"But you have to snap back to it. It's like an on and off switch, you have to go back to the norm."

The 28-year-old added of her son: "He's continually growing every day and getting smarter and cuter as the days go by. He tries to talk. He really tries. He's adorable. I love him. He tries to smile too, and I love it, love it, love it."

"My mother was the strongest person I've ever seen."

Jennifer said motherhood had completely changed her life and is thankful for fiance David Otunga's support.
