I’ve only been doing this “Good Celebrity” thing for a week or two now, and there were a few days I forgot about it and all, but Shakira is already being nominated for the “Good Celebrity” hall of fame. I freaking love her now. Why? Because she started charitable foundation, Latin America in Solidarity Action, that has donated $40 million to aid victims of a hurricane in Nicaragua and an earthquake in Peru. And she created the foundation with the amazing writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

“A charitable foundation set up by Colombian pop star Shakira has donated $40 million (£19.6 million) to help victims of natural disasters. The money will go towards repairing damage caused by an earthquake in Peru and a hurricane in Nicaragua.

“A further $5 million (£2.46 million) will be spent on health and education in four Latin American countries. The singer made the announcement at a New York summit on climate change organised by ex-President Bill Clinton.

“Shakira, who has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, will also host a discussion on youth activism at the Clinton Global Initiative on Saturday. Her foundation, Latin America in Solidarity Action, was set up with fellow Colombian and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, in a bid to combat the deaths of children.

“Shakira also fronts a charity to help children who are victims of violence.”

[From the BBC]

Um, what doesn’t Shakira do that’s not awesome? I can’t think of anything. I used to be kind of so-so on her music, but now I’ve decided that everything she touches turns to gold, and thus her music is perfection too. Plus she’s smart, spunky, and takes college courses in her spare time. And the other day, I was walking by this cliff, and there was a bus full of school children teetering precariously, about to fall off, and Shakira came along with her magic lasso of awesomeness, tied it around the bus, and whisked them off to safety. Then she delivered three babies and planted some trees in the just-demolished forest. This is all completely true; I saw it with my own, non-exaggerating eyes. Shakira = Wonder Woman.

I'm a bit surprised she has $40 million to donate. I know she did those pepsi commercials, but at least in the states it seems like she had one record and then zip...

More power to her; that's an astonishing amount of money!

This is a good trend to recognize a celebrity in daily gossip press for the good they're doing. It's a nice counterbalance to the unfortunate fact that nowadays celebs are only considered press worthy if they've been arrested, been to rehab or otherwise making a public embarrassment of themselves.

Good for Shakira, even though I could leave or take her music. I'm very impressed that she took college courses at UCLA during the summer!

Shakira’s Evening of Love

Shakira and longtime boyfriend Antonio de la Rúa attend “An Evening of Love”, an event benefiting The Bare Feet Foundation held at Rain Nightclub inside the Palms Casino Resort on Tuesday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Colombian pop star performed at the special event, which also featured a special screening of Love in the Time of Cholera, a film based on the novel by fellow Colombian Gabriel García Márquez, about a lifelong love affair, struck a chord with the singer.

Addressing potential plans of marriage at the premiere, Shakira told People en Español, “[Antonio and I will] get married eventually, or we won’t, but we’re together and that’s what matters. We love each other and we want to stay like that. Why fix something that’s not broken?”

She added, “[Love is] my primary nourishment. I think that nothing else in life, not even your career or music – well, what I’m saying is a bold statement – I think that nothing can substitute love as the propelling force of everyone’s lives. It’s number one on my list of priorities, of course.”

Gyrating pop star arouses fury of the mullahs

A HIP-SHAKING performance by the pop star Shakira has provoked a showdown between the Afghan government and the country's independent media.

Senior Muslim clerics have joined the culture ministry to warn Tolo TV, the largest private television station, of serious consequences after the broadcast of a concert by the Colombian singer, famous for her onstage gyrations.

The incident is the latest sign of a growing fightback by the country's powerful conservative establishment against the more liberal-minded newspapers and broadcast media and the tide of Western-backed liberal reforms since the fall of the Taliban government in 2001.

Draconian new media legislation is soon to be signed into law by President Hamid Karzai after it was recently approved by parliament. The measures will give the Government greater powers to limit broadcasts that are deemed damaging to Afghanistan and its culture and forcing television stations to carry more religious programs or face going off air.

The Shakira broadcast caused consternation even though she appeared with computer pixellation covering her chest. State television broadcast interviews with clerics and MPs criticising the concert, and one pro-Government newspaper criticised the broadcast, saying it would provoke suicide bombers.

But the owner of Tolo TV, Saad Mohseni, who grew up in Australia, said: "This was not that provocative, and Shakira was pixellated. The Government is looking for an excuse to have a go at us. When we give air time to the Taliban we are 'talking to terrorists'; when we air people criticising the Government we are told we are 'opposing peace and reconciliation'."

Afghanistan's media has enjoyed a startling renaissance since 2001. Television was banned by the Taliban, but today there are eight independent television stations, more than 60 FM radio stations and hundreds of newspapers and magazines.

Mr Karzai's Government has become alarmed by both press criticism and the danger that media liberalism could fuel the Taliban insurgency.

Afghanistan's constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression. But it also states that "no law can be contrary to the provisions and practices of Islam".

MPs were furious when Tolo TV recently broadcast footage of them nodding off and picking their noses during debates.

"Her clothes were very tight," said Sharif, a 41-year-old doorman who watched the concert. "But I had no problem with it."

Shakira charity auction raises $76,000

AP

MEXICO CITY - Ever paid $3,000 for a bra?

That's what one fan forked over for one of Shakira's bras.

Another admirer shelled out $14,000 for the privilege of meeting the pop sensation and receiving front-row seats at a future show in Toronto.

The two bids were among the highest offered for 40 items that Shakira donated to an Internet auction for her Bare Feet Foundation, which is building a school for impoverished children in northern Colombia.

Another popular item: a shiny lavender skirt with turquoise-and-coral beading that she wore while singing "Hips Don't Lie," which fetched more than $1,000.

The items were from Shakira's 2007 "Oral Fixation" tour.

Still up for grabs until Sunday: an electric Fender guitar and an acoustic Taylor guitar, both bearing the 31-year-old singer's autograph.

The auction has raised $76,000.

"It was a phenomenal success," Eric Gazin, president of Auction Cause, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. "We had bidders from 10 countries."

Shakira Is Happy With Her Small Boobs

Latina superstar Shakira is finally comfortable with her body, after years of anxiety over the size of her breasts. The 31-year-old singer confesses she used to hate her small boobs and she once joked they could be "confused with mountains" in her breakthrough single Whenever, Wherever.

Colombian Shakira says, "I used to worry about my breast size, but I've finally accepted myself for who I am. Besides, a big butt is more important in Latin culture."

Shakira Denies Sex Tape Prank

A sex video April Fool's Day prank involving pop collaborators Shakira and Alejandro Sanz has been exposed as a hoax by the singers' publicists.

Bogus Internet reports suggested the stars and Shakira's boyfriend, Antonio de la Rua, were caught on film enjoying a threesome, but representatives for Sanz and Shakira insist there is no sex tape.

PeopleEnEspanol.com claims the rumour got started when Argentine DJ Javier Ceriani commented on a little Internet report on his Zona Cero radio show.

He said, "It's been said... there is a private video recorded on a yacht, one that could implicate Alejandro Sanz, Shakira and Antonio de la Rua."

He suggested the tape was in the hands of the courts.

In a joint statement, the singers' representatives say, "This is a false rumor. This is totally absurd any way you look at it. There is no possibility that such a video exists. It is a baseless and malicious rumor."

Sanz and Shakira teamed up on the song "La Tortura" and appeared together in the tune's steamy video.

Shakira praises British Prime Minister Gordon Brown

Associated Press

LONDON - George Clooney. Angelina Jolie. Shakira.

Not a red carpet lineup, but a roll call of celebrities the sometimes dour British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has recruited to inject glamour into his appeals to help the developing world.

Brown joined a telephone conference Monday with Shakira, praising the Colombian pop sensation for taking an inspirational role in work to provide a basic education for every child in the world.

The Grammy-winning singer, famed for her hit "Hips Don't Lie," is supporting a week of events to highlight the cause of education advocacy group the Global Campaign for Education.

She said the group is pressing world leaders to provide funding for primary education for 72 million young children who now miss out on schooling as a result of poverty.

The group also aims to generate support for some 226 million older children who miss out on classes because of a lack of access to schools, or because of truancy.

Brown is the world's "No. 1 champion of education," said the group's chairman, Gene Sperling, an ex-White House economic adviser to former President Clinton.

Shakira also praised Brown, who as British treasury chief in 2006 pledged $15 billion over 10 years for education in the developing world — the largest offer of aid from a Group of Eight industrialized nation.

"He is a man with wonderful intentions, he is very pro-active, he is working very hard for the issue of education," Shakira said, speaking from Washington on a conference call.

The 31-year-old singer said she had previously met Brown to discuss aid for education. "I could feel how passionate and enthusiastic he was about it," she said.

"She is inspiring people all over the world," Brown said, returning the singer's praise as he joined the call from London.

Brown has made work on meeting the Millennium Development Goals — a set of development standards on education, health, literacy and poverty — a key plank of his foreign policy.

Betraying his often gloomy demeanor, Brown regularly courts celebrities to lend backing to his campaigns.

He held talks with George Clooney earlier this month on violence in Darfur, has worked closely with Bono and Bob Geldof on aid for Africa, and chatted with Angelina Jolie in 2006 on education.

Shakira: 'I Want Lots Of Babies'

Shakira has revealed that she intends to have a large family.

The singer claimed that she wants to settle down and have children with fiancé Antonio de la Rua but ruled out marriage for the time being.

"The fact is I'm not very traditionalist. We live together as husband and wife, we don't need anything to make it official, especially not for the paparazzi or magazines. Why fix things that aren't broken?" she told The Sunday Times.

"But I do want to have lots of babies with him."

The star, who got engaged in 2001, added that de la Rua helps her keep her feet on the ground.

"I've been in the public eye for along time and I don't know any other way of living - it's everything I know," she said.

"My family and my friends remind me what's real, which helps, and Antonio - he is a wise man. If I get a bit silly he brings me back and reminds me who I am."

Shakira signed a "360-degree" deal with promoter Live Nation last year, rumoured to be worth up to £50 million.

Shakira's Fat Teen Years

Shakira was a "plump" teenager.

The 'She Wolf' singer admits she has not always been in such good shape but has always been too preoccupied with her music to care about her looks.

She said: "As a teenager I was plump but my appearance wasn't so important at that time. I focused much more on my music and song writing.

"I know that image in this profession is a matter of opinion. I think the external appearance in show business is important and over the years I've discovered my assets. Honestly, I've never seen myself as a goddess or sex symbol."

The 32-year-old Columbian singer now has more body confidence and is happy to show off her sexy figure in skimpy outfits.

She said: "We all have our insecurities but I used to have more of those days in my twenties. I found nothing satisfied me and I just wanted to hide from the world.

"You should always make the most of what you've got and I think I've tried my entire life to figure it out.

"I wouldn't have made a video like 'She Wolf' when I was younger, that's for sure. Now you never know what could happen with them."

While the singer is happy to bare her flesh professionally, she admits she prefers to cover up when she is out of the spotlight.

She told Germany's FHM magazine: "When I perform I feel free. But when I'm on the beach I don't run around topless or wobble with my hips. Perhaps it's difficult to understand but I'm kind of shy when it comes to my body."

Singing 'Goat' Shakira

Shakira used to sing like a goat.

The 'She Wolf' songstress has revealed her musical talents went unnoticed when she was a teenager because her singing voice had an uncanny resemblance to the bleating of a goat.

She is quoted by website AbsoluteNow as saying: "I never made it to the school choir because the music teacher didn't like my voice. I was pretty sad. But he was probably right, I did have a voice a bit like a goat but my dad told me to never give up and to keep going and it's paid off."

As well as fine-tuning her vocal chords over the years, the 32-year-old beauty recently admitted she feels she has become sexier as she got older.

She said: "Ten years ago I was very traditional and very conservative. But people grow and change. I am in another moment in my life. I feel more like a woman today."

The blonde singer - who is engaged to entrepreneur Antonio de la Rua - also admitted she can't wait to start a family.

She explained: "About 15 years ago I used to dream about getting married, wearing the dress, inviting loads of people. Now I dream about procreating. I dream about growing old with the person I really love."

Shakira's Guy Disguise

Shakira dressed like a man so she could go to university.

The 32-year-old singer took a break from making music and enrolled on a history course after releasing 2006 album 'Oral Fixation Vol. 2' in 2006 because she wanted to step out of the public spotlight for a while.

During her time as a student at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), the Columbian-born beauty dressed in disguise and changed her name to prevent people finding out her true identity.

She told The Guardian newspaper: "I needed a break from me. The universe is so broad, I cannot be at the centre of it. So I decided to go to the university and study history for a summer course, just to kind of switch gears, taste the student life.

"I used to wear a cap and a big backpack, I looked like a boy. I didn't get recognised. Some people looked at me very suspiciously, a few people asked me, but I told them my name was Isabelle.

"I would go to university over and over again if I could."

Shakira - who has an estimated fortune of £26 million after selling over 50 million albums worldwide - has also revealed she can't understand why she still loves making music after so many years.

The 'She Wolf' star explained: "I should care less. It has been 20 years, but I still care about my career. I care about the music. I'm not normal."

Shakira: My Body Is Asking to Reproduce

Unlike most women, Shakira is willing to let her body go. In fact, the 5-foot-2 Colombian "She Wolf" singer, 32, says she's looking forward to it -- if it means she'll become a mom.

"My body feels like it is asking to reproduce, to have a huge belly and carry babies," she tells the new issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands today. "My boyfriend is six feet tall, and sometimes I feel like I'm his keychain, a small thing."

But while the Grammy winner -- currently in a nine-year, monogamous relationship with investment banker Antonio de la Rua -- has long had a maternal instinct, don't expect her to walk down the aisle any time soon. It's something she says she'll never do.

"We live in a society that represses women's subconscious dreams," Shakira, who considers herself a die-hard feminist, says."You know, women have to make enormous efforts through life, much larger than men. We deal with so many pressure: the pressure of aesthetics, and how society wants us to deliver our performances as mothers, daughters and wives."

"It's funny how the papers want to see you married, and then they want to see you divorced," she continues. "Well, I won't do any of it."

Shopping Saviour Shakira

Shakira is helping save the world's economies by going shopping.

The 'She Wolf' singer admits she used to feel guilty about splashing her cash because she is Catholic but soon realised her spending habits are a good thing.

She said: "I do like to enjoy things any normal girl my age enjoys: I jog in the park, watch really bad movies. I used to feel guilty - I am a Catholic girl after all - but today, the way I see it, shopping keeps the world rolling. A world where people don't consume? The economy gets worse."

The Colombian-born beauty also denied claims she has turned her back on her native country and insists she does everything she can to help.

Shakira - who now lives in Miami - told You magazine: "It couldn't be further from the truth - I go frequently to Colombia.

"I grew up understanding that in countries like mine when you are born poor, you are destined to die poor. I have seen how many children are recruited into the militia or into the drug-trafficking business at an early age because they are not safe at school, and I understood that I could do something about it even in a small way. No child wants to be a drug dealer or in the militia."

Shakira's She Wolf Tangled In Photo Lawsuit

The artist who designed the cover of SHAKIRA's album SHE WOLF has filed suit against the pop star's label Sony - alleging company bosses owe him $64,000 (£40,000).

Art director Lee Swillingham signed a $63,000 (£39,375) contract with the company last spring (09) for his services and was paid half the sum up front, reports the New York Post.

According to court documents, he earned $5,000 (£3,125) a day for extra work, totalling an additional $36,000 (£22,500).

The contract included a clause stating Sony owes nothing if the record label isn't pleased with the final project.

Swillingham's lawyer, Sam Israel, has accused the company of falsely claiming it didn't find the work satisfactory while using the images Swillingham created for the album.

A Sony spokesperson had not responded to requests for a comment as WENN went to press.

Shakira Has Body Therapy

Shakira has therapy to deal with her body issues.

The sexy singer - who wore a revealing nude-effect leotard in her 'She Wolf' music video - has poor self-esteem regarding her figure and she started going to see a therapist in 2001 to overcome her negative feelings.

She said: "It helped me so much with every aspect of my life, from body image to relationships. My therapist told me why I behaved in certain ways and not to feel so pressured. It's incredibly liberating to spend an hour talking to someone and not caring about what you sound like. It's about understanding myself. Sometimes I'll speak to my therapist for an hour a day. It's become part of my routine."

The Colombian-born beauty says therapy helps her on the inside, but it takes a lot of hard work at the gym to give her the figure, which is the envy of women all over the world.

She told Fabulous magazine: "All through my 20s I spent more time worrying about what I didn't have than thinking about what I did have. I wished I was taller, had longer legs, slimmer hips, a smaller bottom, even straighter hair. I'm just like all women - we're born to criticise ourselves.

"I've worked my butt off to look like this. I've achieved the body I have now through hard work and careful eating. I've worked out every day, either running, doing gym work or dancing.

Nowadays, the 33-year-old pop star looks at just her body shape, and not the bathroom scales.

She said: "I haven't been on the scales for a year but I know I've made my body leaner, trimming my hips and bottom."
