Roethlisberger injury update

By Jill King Greenwood and and Karen Roebuck

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Monday, June 12, 2006

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition and in surgery this afternoon following a serious head injury this morning after his motorcycle collided with a car on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge, police said.

Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said.

A plastic surgeon has been summoned.

"He is right now in the (operating room) undergoing some surgery from injuries he received in this accident today," said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma and burns at Mercy Hospital, Uptown. ... He was talking to me before he left for the OR. He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened."

Roethlisberger, 24, who was not wearing a helmet, collided with a Chrysler New Yorker shortly before 11:25 a.m. and was thrown off his motorcycle, flying head-first into the car's windshield "with a pretty good force," said a veteran city police officer.

Roethlisberger was talking and moving his arms and legs after the accident. He suffered injuries to his face and lost several teeth, according to city firefighters.

The injured quarterback was taken to Mercy Hospital, said a Steelers spokesman, who declined to provide other information.

The car, which has Maine license plates, was heading west on Second Avenue and was turning left onto the 10th Street Bridge. Roethlisberger was driving east on Second Avenue riding a Suzuki Hayabusa and collided with the car at the intersection of the bridge and the Armstrong Tunnels.

Several teammates, including backup quarterback Charlie Batch, linebacker Joey Porter and safety Mike Logan, arrived at the hospital emergency room but did not comment. The team planned to issue a statement later Monday, but no one from the team would be made available, said spokesman Dave Lockett, who left the hospital at about 2:40 p.m.

Roethlisberger, who led the Steelers to a Super Bowl championship this year, slammed into the windshield, rolled over the car and landed on the pavement, striking his head again, said a woman who witnessed the accident.

The witness, who declined to give her name, asked Roethlisberger several times if he was OK. He eventually replied, "My name is Ben."

He asked: "Where am I?"

"You're at the Armstrong Tunnel," the witness said.

"What city is that in?" he said.

"Pittsburgh," the woman replied.

Roethlisberger fell silent for about a minute and then tried to stand up.

"I'm OK," he said.

"No you're not," said the woman, who instructed him to stay still.

Pittsburgh homicide detectives are investigating the accident, which is standard procedure when critical injuries are involved, said city police Lt. Kevin Kraus.

Roethlisberger's 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa, which is named after a Japanese bird of prey, was totaled. The front wheel was broken in half. The handle bars were broken. The left pedal was shattered. The 170-horsepower bike, which weighs 500 pounds fully loaded, was targeted by law enforcement agencies worldwide after its 1998 debut because it could reach a top speed of 189 mph.

Suzuki Motorcycles of North America gave Roethlisberger the bike as part of a promotional deal in exchange for him appearing at several Suzuki dealerships in the area, including Andrews Cycle in Salem, Ohio where he picked up the motorcycle last summer. Andrews' sales staff declined comment.

The motorcycle is popular among first-time buyers, said Steve Stiller, a salesman at Northgate Motorcycles in Cranberry, Butler County.

Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional. :o

In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.

"He talked about being a risktaker and I'm not really a risktaker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

In May 2005, Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tore knee ligaments in a motorcycle accident and was lost for the season.

Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.

Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."

Earlier this year, Roethlisberger led the Steelers to the NFL title, giving the team the fifth Super Bowl win they had been chasing since 1980.

Holmes could cash in on wedding to CruiseIf Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes wed, it would be monetarily smart for her to stay wed for 11 years or more.By Jeannette WallsMSNBCTom Cruise and Katie Holmes fans may be hearing wedding bells — or maybe the sound of a cash register. The couple reportedly have hammered out a prenuptial agreement that will give Holmes as much as $33 million and that will pave the way for the two to get hitched. The happy couple and their lawyers have come up with a contract that will give Holmes $3 million a year up to $33 million for each year that she is married to Cruise, as well as a palatial home in Montecito, California, according to Life & Style Weekly. If the marriage lasts longer than eleven years, the contract becomes void and California's community property law kicks in — giving Holmes half of Cruise's rather sizeable fortune. When contacted by The Scoop, Cruise's rep declined to comment, but an "insider" told the mag that Holmes's parents had been trying to get her out of the relationship — but have changed their minds and now want her to marry Cruise. “If she walks now, Tom will fight her for custody of [daughter Suri], and Katie can’t outlast him in court,” an insider told the mag. “She knows she needs to marry him to get the money to fight him for custody, if it comes to that.”

Vince Vaughn was arrested by North Carolina cops in April 2001 and charged with fighting in public for his part in a brawl outside a New Hanover County bar (the movie star was in town working on the film "Domestic Disturbance"). Limbaugh detained at Palm Beach airport

Authorities allegedly found Viagra in his possession without a prescription

Rush Limbaugh was detained for about three-and-a-half hours Monday at Palm Beach International Airport after authorities said they found a bottle of Viagra in his possession without a prescription.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Rush Limbaugh was detained for more than three hours Monday at Palm Beach International Airport after authorities said they found a bottle of Viagra in his possession without a prescription.

Customs officials found a prescription bottle labeled as Viagra in his luggage that didn’t have Limbaugh’s name on it, but that of two doctors, said Paul Miller, spokesman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

A doctor had prescribed the drug, but it was “labeled as being issued to the physician rather than Mr. Limbaugh for privacy purposes,” Roy Black, Limbaugh’s attorney, said in a statement.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection examined the 55-year-old radio commentator’s luggage after his private plane landed at the airport from the Dominican Republic, said Miller.

The matter was referred to the sheriff’s office, whose investigators interviewed Limbaugh. According to Miller, Limbaugh said that the Viagra was for his use, and that he obtained it from his doctors.

Investigators confiscated the drugs, which treats erectile dysfunction, and Limbaugh was released without being charged.

The sheriff’s office plans to file a report with the state attorney’s office. Miller said it could be a second-degree misdemeanor violation.

Limbaugh reached a deal last month with prosecutors who had accused the conservative talk-show host of illegally deceiving multiple doctors to receive overlapping painkiller prescriptions. Under the deal, the charge, commonly referred to as “doctor shopping,” would be dismissed after 18 months if he continues to submit to random drug tests and treatment for his acknowledged addiction to painkillers.

The newspaper claims Chan told the crowd he was drunk and wanted to sing a duet with Lee. The Rush Hour star also attempted to conduct the band, but only managed to start and stop them several times. Frustrated croonerWho can blame Jackie Chan for leaping onstage with pop singer Jonathan Lee in Hong Kong and demanding a duet? Seems Hollywood has been sabotaging his musical ambitions. "I always wanted to be a singer, and I still try to get my singing included in my films," he told a Lowdown spy before the fracas. "I sing every time during the closing credits of my films, but somehow when the films get dubbed in English, they also bring in a different closing singer for the credits - which is very disappointing."

Chan Sobers Up and Says Sorry Action superstar Jackie Chan has apologized and asked for forgiveness after getting drunk and jumping on stage at a concert on Sunday. Chan was attending a performance by Taiwanese singer/songwriter Jonathan Lee when he unexpectedly took to the stage, starting swearing and hassling the band and Lee. Chan's pop star son Jaycee Chan, who counts Lee as musical inspiration, has also repeatedly apologized for his father's bizarre behavior. A rather embarrassed Rush Hour star later admitted to leading Hong Kong radio show host Candy Chea that he was drunk when he jumped on stage, explaining that he "forgot there were so many people watching." Chea, revealed their conservation on her show yesterday, saying, "But Chan also said this was his first time, and it had never happened before."

'Lost' Star Caught Cheating? Lost star Naveen Andrews has been photographed on a California beach kissing a mystery blonde - just hours before describing his long-term relationship with actress Barbara Hershey as "good and pure." The 37-year-old star, who plays former Iraqi soldier Sayid on the hit show, has had a rocky relationship with Hershey since they started romancing in 1998. In January he admitted to fathering a son with another woman during a brief 2005 split from the actress, who is 21 years his senior. During an interview with American publication People just hours before his steamy beach romp on Saturday, Andrews insisted all was well with their relationship saying, "(My private life) seems to be dysfunctional, (but) what's actually going on...is good and pure." When contacted for a comment on the provocative photos, Andrews' representative tells the magazine, "I have no comment. Naveen and Barbara are still together."

SOUSED STRIP-OFF

KELLY Clarkson is starting to take this whole "rock star" thing a little too seriously. The "American Idol" winner showed up the other night at Hollywood's Key Club for the Metal Skool concert and got "wasted," our spywitness reports. Clarkson climbed onstage with Metal Skool and Ryan Key of the band Yellowcard, toting a bottle of liquor and "ended up tearing off her vest and throwing it into the crowd before playing a lot of air guitar."

I knew I liked her for some reason! ;)
