Pumpkins Reunite in Studio

by Josh Grossberg

Aug 17, 2006, 10:45 AM PT

Smashing Pumpkins fans, get ready to be infinitely happy.

Fourteen long months after founder and frontman Billy Corgan announced, in a full-page Chicago newspaper ad, that he was planning to reform the band he loved so dearly, the Pumpkins are back in the studio, recording their first album since calling it quits with their swan song, 2000's hard-charging Machina: The Machines of God.

The Grammy-winning alt-rockers confirmed the news in a brief message posted on their official Website. Slated to join them for the recording sessions is Roy Thomas Baker, the famed English producer who oversaw such classic records as Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," The Cars' s Shake It Up and, most recently, The Darkness' One Way Ticket to Hell and Back.

There's still no word, however, as to whether all four original Pumpkins are taking part in the reunion.

So far, the lineup consists of Corgan, the Windy City quartet's whiny-voiced singer, guitarist and principal songwriter, and drummer Jimmy Charmberlain. Still MIA are lead guitarist James Iha and bassist D'arcy Wretzky, who left the band after recording Machina, and was replaced by former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur.

However, in a statement posted in May, on the Website for his currently defunct rock outfit, Polar Bears, former Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery revealed that he's been collaborating with Corgan and company.

"It looks like I will be working with the Smashing Pumpkins," Avery said.

Responding to speculation about him joining the group full-time, a rep for the Pumpkins recently told MTV News that Avery "has been rehearsing with [the band] in their pre-production of the new record, but nothing has been confirmed in regards to [him becoming a full-fledged member]."

Avery's participation would be a natural fit, given Corgan's admiration for Jane's Addiction, which he's acknowledged as an influence on the Pumpkins' sound. He's also good pals with its members. (The Pumpkins pleased hometown fans, when they served as the surprise opening act for the Chicago stop of Jane's Addiction's 1997 Relapse tour.)

Formed in 1988, the Smashing Pumpkins first made noise with the 1991 college-rock fave, Gish. But it was their breakout major-label debut, 1993's Siamese Dream (which arrived at the peak of Seattle's grunge wave) that made them alt-rock superstars--thanks to such hits as "Today" and "Disarm."

The band followed up with 1994's Pisces Iscariot, before reaching their peak with 1996's double album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, which spawned the hits "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "Tonight, Tonight" and "1979."

At the height of their success, however, the Pumpkins were hit with the drug-overdose death of touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin, which led Corgan to fire Chambelain, who battled his own drug problems.

Corgan opted for a drum machine for the group's next release, 1998's Adore, which was adored by critics, but failed to match the sales of previous releases.

Chamberlain later returned to the fold, but Wretzky's desire to try her hand at an acting career led to her departure, as well as more discord within the group. The band played its final show at the legendary Chicago Northside nightclub, Metro, in 2000.

After the demise of the Pumpkins, Corgan went on to form Zwan, which issued one album before calling it quits. He then took to writing his own music, putting out his first solo effort, The Future Embrace, last year.

Smashing Pumpkins sue Virgin

Claims label illegally used band in promos

By ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Smashing Pumpkins are suing Virgin Records, saying the record label has illegally used their name and music in promotional deals that hurt the band's credibility with fans.

In a breach-of-contract lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, the rockers said they have "worked hard for over two decades to accumulate a considerable amount of goodwill in the eyes of the public," and that Virgin's use of the band in a "Pepsi Stuff" promotion with Amazon.com and Pepsi Co. threatens their reputation for "artistic integrity."

Virgin released the Smashing Pumpkins' music for more than 17 years, but the only active agreement between the two parties, the lawsuit claims, is a deal granting Virgin permission to sell digital downloads of the band's songs. The agreement does not give Virgin the right to use the band in promotional campaigns to sell outside products, the lawsuit said.

The band members said they would "never grant such authority to Virgin, or any other entity."

An after-hours call to Virgin Records wasn't immediately returned.

The lawsuit demands that Virgin pay with the profits earned in the promotion and asks for an injunction against using the Pumpkins' name or music in the future.

Smashing Pumpkins Dismiss Quit Reports

By WENN

Smashing Pumpkins have reassured fans they have no plans to quit - despite revealing they have recorded their last album. In a recent interview, drummer Jimmy Chamberlain suggested the band's 2007 comeback album Zeigeist would be their last.

After fans' desperate protests, Chamberlain has spoken out again, to insist the band would carry on performing and recording - they just wouldn't release anything in an album format.

Chamberlain says, "The Smashing Pumpkins, will continue to write, record, release, and perform as long as we are able. Some of you may have read bits of an interview that was done in confidence by yours truly, in which I say that the Pumpkins probably won't record CDs anymore. What I meant by this is this: although we may not use the 'album' or 'full length CD' as a format anymore, we will write and record music until we are dead."

Billy Corgan Avoids Jessica Simpson Questions

Billy Corgan has fuelled rumours he is romancing Jessica Simpson - after refusing to confirm or deny if he is dating the pop singer.

The odd couple is rumoured to have begun dating in December after the stars were snapped together during a night out. Sources claimed the longtime pals had taken their relationship to the next level and were "officially dating".

But Corgan, 42, has refused to go public about the alleged romance - deflecting questions about the status of their relationship. When asked if he was dating "Jessica", Corgan responded, "Jessica Rabbit? She's a cartoon character. I don't know if you knew that. They did such a good job on the movie that you swore she was real."

Simpson, who has also yet to publicly acknowledge she is dating the musician, recently revealed the pair has teamed up for a new song. She has been single since splitting from American footballer Tony Romo last summer.

Billy Corgan Rips Into John Mayer

Billy Corgan is slamming John Mayer for his recent loose-lipped Playboy interview in which he detailed his sexual relationship with singer Jessica Simpson.

"He's trying to destroy his career," the Smashing Pumpkins frontman, 42, tells Rolling Stone in an interview outtake. "Rather than take a year off or change his musical direction, some part of it is irritating his soul to the point where he's trying to blow it up. Certainly a talented guy, but empathetically, standing on the sidelines, it's hard to watch someone literally burn their career to the ground speaking as somebody who's done it."

In his now-infamous March Playboy interview, Mayer, 32, said Simpson, 29, was "crazy" in bed and referred to her as "sexual napalm."

"I think for any person who has celebrity to sort of drop rocks at somebody else's feet like that, there’s things you should really just keep your mouths shut on," says Corgan. "There's things that should just be left alone."

Corgan -- who declined to confirm whether he and Simpson ever dated -- recently told Rolling Stone that Simpson is worthy of love. "If people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do," said the rocker, who helped her pen part of the theme song to her VH1 reality show, The Price of Beauty, which airs March 15.

On the Late Show With David Letterman Wednesday, Simpson said she wished Mayer -- whom she dated on-and-off from 2006 to 2007 -- would've kept quiet.

"Normally you would think that somebody you care about would keep those intimate details to himself," she said. "I mean, it was definitely a compliment, in a way, but I don't really want people to know that about me. That’s, you know, I’m like the good girl and then that happens."

When Letterman, 62, told her that she can be both a good and bad girl, Simpson replied, "Yeah, but that's the thing -- I am ... but he gave away my game!"

Though she has not talked to Mayer since the interview came out, she said, "I will always care about him. I think he’s a great person, a great musician, but I was very disappointed by the article."

Courtney Love apologizes to Billy Corgan in heartfelt online note

Courtney Love has issued a heartfelt apology online to Billy Corgan in the hope of repairing her fractured relationship with The Smashing Pumpkins rocker.

The Hole star took to Facebook on Tuesday after Corgan went public with his feelings about Love in recent Spin and Rolling Stone magazine articles.

The rocker told Spin, "After almost 20 years of friendship, I have decided to break all ties to Courtney. I don't want anything to do with her."

In another interview with Rolling Stone, he then added, "I have no interest in supporting her in any way, shape or form. You can't throw enough things down the abyss with a person like that."

Corgan also blasted Hole's plans to release new songs he wrote for her, saying "it would be a real big problem" if she went ahead because, "I haven't given my permission."

Love initially lashed out at her former friend in the New York Daily News, stating, "Billy is talking out his [bleep]. His people already gave permission."

But now she's being a little more diplomatic.

Her Facebook apology to Corgan reads, "Dearest Billy: I love you, I love your strong and eternal heart, even love the [bleep] up gnarly amazing magnificent bigger-than-god louder-than-love karma of the songs you write and allow me to fly with.

"We have again created beauty from the agony between us, all the buried and unburied anguish, all that is true, that is gold, that is meant to be is within this endless and somehow eternal cycle of Billy & Courtney.

"I hope you will take my sincerest apologies for all the thousand ways I sometimes offend you, because I know you are a king, a prince, and my beautiful noble boy. No one will ever force my hand, nothing will come between the truth of what we are."

She signs off by referring to herself and Corgan as "Eternal lovers. Eternal fighters. Eternal warriors. ... I love you and can never thank you enough. Your soul (and you know this)."

Billy Corgan Steps Out With Much Younger Girlfriend

Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan is dating an Australian singer nearly half his age.

The US rocker, 43, whose ex-girlfriends include Courtney Love and Jessica Simpson, is dating Jessica Origliasso, 25, one half of Australian band The Veronicas.

The pair stepped out in Sydney on Sunday night along with Jess’s twin Lisa, the other half of their band.

The twins and Corgan were chauffeur-driven to the Trademark nightclub in Sydney, where the girls were due to make an announcement about the club’s new music CD.

Divorced Corgan, sporting a goatee and wearing a hat to cover his bald pate, held Jess’s hand as they walked into the venue – but refused to answer any questions about their relationship.

The raven-haired Jess, wearing a red coat, looked down at her feet as they entered the club.

The couple are staying at a hotel in Sydney’s city centre.

Brought up in Brisbane, the sisters are now based mainly in Los Angeles but make regular trips home.
