Where do you guys buy ebooks?

Recommended Posts

I used to buy my ebooks from Barnes & Noble because they're in EPUB format and they let you download them. I would download them, crack the DRM, and then read them wherever I wanted. Sometimes I would convert them into other formats. They don't let you download them anymore. I was going to start buying from Amazon from now on, but sometimes when you convert kindle files they come out bad. There's also Kobo. Their ebooks are in EPUB format. Anyone have any experience with them? Is there anywhere else I should consider?

I just get mine through Amazon which I know doesn't help you but damn girl - I envy your skills :D

Edited to add: Here's a question - you can get ebooks on loan from the library. Are you capable of somehow making a copy of an ebook and keeping it for yourself after the loan expires? I don't know if that's do-able or not. Not that I would do so myself, I'm just curious to know if it's possible.

I use Smashwords for DRM-free multi-format ebooks by independent authors. Otherwise I use amazon and convert using calibre to save a copy in whichever format I want at the time. I love calibre as I get a lot of ARCs in many different formats and I can use it to switch between formats and keep everything organized and backed up. I have not used Kobo yet.

I use Calibre and the DRM plugins to crack ebooks. It's easy. I'm sure they can be used on library books but I've never tried. i'm going to buy something from Kobo tomorrow. I'll update with how it goes.

According to some threads on http://www.mobileread.com, Kobo might switch to a book format called KEPUB which is an extended EPUB. It might not be possible to crack them yet. Also, the Kobo store doesn't like my credit card, didn't like a visa gift card I got at the mall a while ago, and the only place in the USA to get giftcards for them is at Frys which isn't very convenient for me.

After researching the matter what I want are books in EPUB format with Adobe Digital Editions for the DRM. While playing around with calibre I noticed the "Get Books" button with the globe icon. It searchs online bookstore for the book you want. I don't know how I missed it for so long. Doing some searches for books I want I discovered http://www.ebooks.com. They have exactly what I want. They took my visa gift card so that's where I'll be buying from from now on. There are a couple of books I want that are only available from Amazon, so i'll just have to deal with that.

Wow, I too am impressed by the abilities to crack books - the couple times I've tried I haven't been able. I have calibre and have been able to change formats but only on books I've bought; nothing I've downloaded from my library. So I get books from Amazon (free or paying) from my public library (which is a member of Overdrive) or from the University library where I work.

Are you using the Nook for Mac (or PC) app? You can still download your books from it.

I only know Macs, so I can help you if you run into issues. No clue if PC is the same. You may need to unhide your library files to see them--that's how I converted my Kindle files to my Nook.

Can someone remind me how to find the free Amazon Kindle books that come with a prime membership??

If you search on the Amazon website, a free kindle will say so in the "payment" section but you still have to order/download from the kindle itself. I tend to "shop" the Amazon lender library from within the kindle itself. This year has been easy as I've been reading a couple of series where they're all in the free library so each month I download the next one by one of the two authors I've been reading

In my kindle, I go to Menu-Shop in Kindle Store, then I have to expand the "Browse" section to show me Kindle Owners' LEnding Library - from within that you can just browse or you can browse by genre too. (that would be under "refine titles by")

I have a Mac and read on a Nook HD+. I couldn't find any apps on the BN site.

Go to the BN site and download the "Nook for Mac" app. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nook-for-mac/379003592/

Once it is on your Mac, you can read your books from there, and download them directly to your device. You may need to unhide your library files to see everything. Let me know if you can't find them.
