Mike Tyson Arrested After Allegedly Punching Photographer at LAX

Mike Tyson and a photographer made citizen's arrests of one another after getting into a scuffle Wednesday at Los Angeles International Airport, police say.

At 4:30 p.m., the former boxing champ, 43, was passing through LAX from Europe en route to Las Vegas when a celebrity photographer began taking his picture at the United Airlines terminal, Sgt. Jim Holcomb tells PEOPLE.

"The two men got into a scuffle, and it's alleged that Tyson hit the photographer once in the face with one hand, causing him to fall to the ground," Holcomb says. "The photographer sustained a laceration to the forehead, and was taken to a local hospital."

Officers arrived on the scene and detained Tyson, who was booked at a nearby LAPD station and held on $20,000 bail, according to police records. Documents also show that Tyson was released at 8:24 p.m.

Tyson was reportedly traveling with his wife and 10-month-old baby. The incident was first reported by Radaronline.com.

"Mr. Tyson did absolutely nothing wrong, he was the victim in this case," his attorney, Richard Schonfeld tells PEOPLE. "We look forward to vindicating him and pursuing his rights."

Earlier this year, the boxer's 4-year-old daughter, Exodus, died in Phoenix after accidentally getting her neck wrapped in a cord from an exercise machine. In November 2007, Tyson was sentenced by an Arizona judge to 24 hours in jail and three years probation for drug possession and driving under the influence.

It remains to be seen whether the airport incident will be deemed a violation of his probation terms.

Mike Tyson Speaks Out on Airport Scuffle

MIKE Tyson says he was merely defending his wife and 10-month-old child after an altercation with an overaggressive photographer at Los Angeles’ LAX airport on Wednesday.

Tyson reportedly lashed out at paparazzo Tony Echevarria, 50, as he passed through the city’s airport with his family.

Police confirmed the former heavyweight boxing champion had been held on suspicion of battery.

“Mike acted in self-defense as a father protecting his child,” said Tyson’s spokeswoman Tammy Brook.

However, Echevarria said in video interview posted on TMZ that he “wasn’t aggressive, I was shooting from a distance, and I was respectful.” He indicated that his videotape should back up his story.

LAX police Sgt. Jim Holcomb says Tyson allegedly hit the photographer once in the face with one hand, causing a laceration on the forehead.

Echevarria says he received five stitches and that Tyson, 43, hit him at least four times. “When you’re getting hit by Mike Tyson, it’s the worst thing in the world you can imagine,” he said.

The incident comes just months after Tyson’s four-year-old daughter Exodus died after accidentally strangling herself with a loose cord on a treadmill.

It’s not the first time that the boxer, 43, has been in trouble with the law.

In 1999, he was jailed for assaulting two people after a traffic accident and seven years previous to that, was convicted of raping a beauty queen and served three years in prison.

Tyson Was 'Defending' Family In Paparazzo Brawl

Mike Tyson has hit back at claims he punched a videographer for no reason, insisting he was "attacked" by the photographer and only acted to protect his child.

Tyson was arrested on Wednesday after becoming embroiled in a scuffle with Tony Echevarria as he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on a flight with his wife, Lakiha Spicer, and their 10-month-old daughter Milan.

Both men made citizen's arrests on each other and were later hauled to a police station, where they were booked for identical misdemeanor battery charges.

Echevarria spoke out about the incident on Thursday, accusing Tyson of snapping after he was asked about his wife, and lashing out without provocation.

But the former heavyweight champion insists it was the photographer who instigated the altercation by "attacking" him.

Tyson's spokesperson Tammy Brook says, "Mr. Tyson was traveling with his wife and 10-month-old child without security when he was attacked by an overly aggressive paparazzi (sic). The truth will reveal Mike acted in self-defense as a father protecting his child. We are confident justice will prevail."

A police official claims Tyson cut the lensman's forehead after hitting him once, while Echevarria claims he needed five stitches after the 43 year old punched him at least four times.

It is unclear if the incident will violate the terms of Tyson's three-year probation from a drug arrest in Arizona in 2007.

PETA calls for 'cruel' Mike Tyson pigeon show to be scrapped

Former boxing champ Mike Tyson is facing a challenge from animal rights campaigners over his upcoming bird racing reality show after they branded the program "cruel."

The retired sportsman has harbored a passion for pigeon racing for years and recently landed a TV deal to bring his hobby to the small screen in the series "Take on Tyson."

But the concept of the show has infuriated activists from PETA, and they are calling on the show to be halted before filming starts in Brooklyn, New York in April.

PETA general counsel Jeffrey Kerr says, "It is inherently cruel. The birds often end up lost in storms, being injured, or just becoming so exhausted that they're unable to fly."

Tyson's show is already under investigation by the New York District Attorney's office over allegations it involves illegal gambling and Kerr is hoping state authorities ban the series from going to air.

He adds, "Pigeon racing as an industry involves gambling. That's why people do it, to make money."

However, bosses at the Animal Planet network, who bought the rights to Tyson's show, insist the complaints are unfounded.

Representative Patricia Kollappallil tells the New York Daily News, "There have never been any plans for wagering on the pigeon race. (The birds will be) cherished and respected by their owners, including Mr. Tyson."
