Dynasty-the Ultimate 80s Prime Time soap- a forum for Gay Rights!?!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Currently watching Dynasty Season #4 (thank you NETFLIX!!!!!!!! ) and I was bowled over by the 2nd Trial involving Steven & Blake, this time with Blake trying to take Steven's son, Danny, away because he thinks Steven's homosexuality makes him unfit to be a parent. WOW!!!!!! Big Drama. Great acting and juicy dialogue by witnesses for Steven's & Blake's characters. It's very timely because it highlights that for this country, only recently have the GLBT community gotten strong parental rights and they STILL can't get married legally with full benefits/security.

Anyway....

I was shocked at 1st by how a lot of the heavy duty sexual talk must have (apparently) flew over my head when I was a little because as I watched recently, it was like for the 1st time. It's all juicy & delicious tit for tat with Alexis taking Blake down a peg as a bad father figure (Right On!) and the love affair between Steven & Claudia just blows my mind! Turns out that the whole time Steven is being castigated for being gay, that he's discovering that he is very bisexual. But Not even prime time TV was ready to acknowledge that issue. I suspect that it was their weird way of quietly making him acceptable to the old school narrow-minded viewers.

Best about the whole trial (so far) is that Steven refuses to use Claudia as a pawn to "prove that he may be straight". He wants everybody to think that he's gay and to DEAL WITH IT, period!

I'm only on the 1st disc. I hope he gets to keep Danny. But no matter what, I want to buy this collection because it really is a great bit of pop culture history.

Of course, now in 2009, I scream at the TV and wonder why nobody mentions that Steven grew up under Blake's roof so that means if Danny were to be reared by Blake (no pun intended, :D ) then he'd grow up gay too, right? According to Blake, it's NURTURE that makes a kid gay so that's why Steven shouldn't have Danny? Then how did Steven become gay? The trial seems really really silly actually. It drives me crazy that actual trials like this took place. :angry3:

But as an overall fan, I will say in Blake's defense, he does seem to be growing to understand his son's ideals/lifestyle although he never (at least not yet) seems to be able to truly accept/love his son, which is sad but very very REAL. Homophobia is a Big Bitch. And on this show, it got people murdered, unemployed (well he quit), homeless (although voluntarily), disowned and possibly childless. :bawl:

It's one hell of a show, where the main character Blake is portrayed as being an intolerant bigotted asshole and the megabitch villian Alexis being one of the gay guy's biggest loving supporters. :smileapprove: Talk about playing with viewers heads. And I won't even go into the drag queen outifts that Alexis (Joan Collins) and Krystle (Linda Evans) wore. GOOD LORD!!!!!! The wigs, the shoulder pads, the hats, the make-up, the gowns, the jewels, the shoes, the belts, the half-naked boy toys........Dynasty was such High Camp. :jumping1: I can't believe a show like that reached the top of pop culture in the 1980s but I'm glad it did. :inlove: LOGO channel, give these guys & gals an award!

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!

Well so much for Gay Pride. Stephen got to keep his son, ONLY because he rushed out and married that woman who just got out of the sanitarium. Now what the helll kind of message is that??? The state would rather have an unstable hetero female raise a kid instead of two sane gay guys. :angry3: Boy, it didn't take them long to lose their courage. But I still have hope for Stephen.....and get this.....by Day 2 of the marriage they were already fighting! Dun Dun DUN!!!!!!

On a brighter note, Alexis is getting ready to meet Dex, her new hot lover. His name rhymes with Sex, and he's hot eye candy for EVERYBODY!

Also, just noted that there is a lot of rape or attempted rape in this season. :3huh: What's up with that?????? One male character who was kind of nice just alll of a sudden attacks a main female for no good reason. Now he's a "villian". That was the laziest worst plot device to get the viewers to dislike somebody. I know this guy is gonna get his comeuppance, soon. Actually there's a lot of weird crazy dark sex in Dynasty. Remember when Cecil Colby almost died while having sex with Alexis? Soon after she became his wife and inherited his estate. Talk about getting a reputation around town! And remember Sammy Jo (aka Heather Locklear way before Melrose Place!) who made porno flicks after she left Stephen or did she just take nudie pictures? And we won't even go into Adam, the long lost demon seed of Blake & Alexis. He's attempted to screw his sister, tried to murder a few people, frame his Mommy and he just loves rough sex and drinking and doing some other drugs too. Can you believe, Blake Carrington just bends over backwards to accept this nice "straight boy" into his family. Blake is such a tool!!!! But it's stufff like that, that clearly shows Stephen, the honest gentle loving gay guy, being passed over for some clearly demented lugnut, that makes me think SOMEBODY on that show was subversive. Because as I watch, I come away with thinking that most of these people are perverted loons and they use Stephen as a whipping post to make themselves feel less weird, especially Blake. But the more somebody calls Stephen a fag (oh yes, they use the f word)- the more I cheer Stephen on and think that other person is an asshole. Sometimes characters on the show, especially Alexis, get "goodness points" just by having a scene with Stephen. Or like Adam, who taunts and smirks at Stephen whenever they meet so this just reinforces what a big DICK Adam is. It's weird how Stephen is used as a moral guide/reflection while at the same time being disparaged.

Overall, I gotta keep watching and try to figure out the subtext here. But I admit I get distracted a lot by all the juicy shit that goes down every ten minutes.....

:4biggrin:

the producers/distributers of Dynasty have messed up the series releases BIG TIME. :tantrum: Instead of releasing complete seasons, they are now doing Season 3 Part 1and so on.... Sooooooooo NETFLIX/Stores don't even have the rest of season I was watching.

:jumping1: But I did run out and bought Seasons One and Two which are being sold in whole complete box sets. That was fun to watch & share with friends. Remember when Blake accidentally killed Steven's gay lover near the fireplace? Or how about that rich slut Fallon (aka Nancy Drew's Pamela Sue Martin) contemplating an abortion?

I tell ya, this show is like Godiva chocolate!

Anyway, it seems that Steven's homosexuality was always a big topic/plot issue from episode one which is kind of cool. :smileapprove: You watch Steven trying to act butch/manly or going to see prostitutes to practice his heterosexuality or you watch him getting drunk and having fits of rage from being mistunderstood. Steven is the 1st to accept Krystle into the Carrington family because he's even a bigger outsider than she is due to homophobia! So those two bond out of lonliness & shared "other" status.

If you want to experience some classic 80s "GREED IS GOOD" high camp adult soap opera entertainment- Dynasty will NOT disappoint.

:D

I loved Dynasty back in the day! It was great up until the last two or three seasons. It was pretty unwatchable by the time it went off the air. I would say seasons 2-5, were AWESOME!

Never got into Falcon Crest or Dallas. Knot's Landing was the one I really loved, I watched it all 14 years it was on the air.

Falcon Crest was okay. But I couldn't get excited about anyone besides Lorenzo Lamas....and I can't even remember his character's name!

Lance....boy he was hot!
