The Merchant of Venice, a controversial novel written by none other than but the legendary writer Shakespeare late in 1590s is one of the best novels based on critical issue like racial hatred. Shakespeare penned the sensitive issue in such a way that it contains both tragic and comedy elements; that’s why critics call this a tragic comedy novel. The novel inspired many creative mind people to represent it many different ways and the best adaption that got both national and international fame was the theatrical production of The Merchant of Venice. The Broadway production of the novel started in 1753 when Broadway first established its theater in Williamsburg, Virginia and later moved to New York.

The Merchant of Venice has now become the signature show of the New York City and since its Broadway debut many high profile celebs have performed different characters of the novel. The recent theatrical production of the novel got such a praise that was never observed before. Thanks to the mesmerizing performance of Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner actor Al Pacino in the role of famous Jewish character Shylock. His inclusion in the Broadway performance cast brought the record breaking box office collection. The Merchant of Venice show having Al Pacino is currently running at the Broadhurst Theatre and will close on Sunday, February 20, 2011. The Merchant of Venice tells the story of racial hatred between a Christian merchant, Antonio and a Jewish moneylender, Shylock, who lends money to Antonio on a condition that he will take a pound of flesh from his Antonio’s body if he fails to pay his debt by the end of deadline. The main story covers many other aspects of real human life such as father and daughter relationship, friendship and love and revenge and forgiveness.

The off-Broadway theatrical representation of the novel got almost the same fame and there are many theaters brining their own Merchant of Venice productions and after the amazing performance by multi-awards winner Al Pacino as Shylock, it’s Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham who will perform as Shylock in off-Broadway production of the show that will begin in New York City at Pace University's Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts on Friday, March 4, 2011.
