Now he's a Jehovah's Witness, Prince is refusing to sing anything explicit - so no Cream, Sexy MF, Gett Off etc.His set includes seven tracks from Purple Rain,Sign O' the Times, Nothing Compares 2u (whichhas Alicia Key's Fallin' dropped in) and Kiss, where he's changed the TV reference line from "Dynasty" to "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy."(FYI: Prince has a new 23-year-old wife. She was a fan that he met through the internet.)

LABEL SLAVE

Page Six

IS Prince ready to become a "slave" to the music industry again? Industry sources say the singer is in California working on his next album and "is shopping it to major labels." Prince, who once performed with the word "slave" on his forehead during contract disputes with Warner Music, had sworn off labels forever, but after his last self-released album, "News," flopped last year, he has reconsidered. It's expected that Prince, who has worked with Clive Davis before, may head to J Records or BMG.

Hmm, is this wife #3? I saw a pic of him and his second wife and she didn't look that young. Good to hear he's touring, too bad all his songs I love are nasty. Luckily I caught him in concert years ago, bad words and all. :D

LABELED: Prince, 45, who once carped that he was a "slave" to his former record label, has signed with Columbia Records after several years as an independent artist, both parties have announced. The worldwide deal initially covers just the veteran pop star's upcoming album, "Musicology," which Columbia will release in the U.S. on April 20. Said Prince in a statement: "I am really an artist and musician at heart, that's what I do. 'Musicology' has no boundaries or formats. It is long overdue to return to the art and craft of music -- that's what this album is about. School's in session."

Prince Schools Audience on New TourTODD PETERSONpeople.comPrince, one of pop music's most talented and influential performers over the past several decades, launched a tour Monday night that is certain to be a highlight for years to come. The musician from Minneapolis began his "Musicology" tour at Los Angeles's sold-out Staples Center with a performance that is intended to educate audiences about the joys of live music -- and on that end he did not disappoint, according to reports. In a two-and-a-half-hour set that included an early string of hits such as "Let's Go Crazy," "I Would Die 4 U" and "When Doves Cry," Prince demonstrated why his music has made such an impact since his 1978 debut album "For You," and his musical heyday of the 1980s.He also made allusions to contemporary artists. During the performance of "Controversy" he said, "We do not believe in lip-synching," the Associated Press reports. It was an almost-certain dig at Britney Spears, among other performers, whose latest tour has drawn heavy criticism from attendees who have claimed that nearly the entire event is prerecorded. But Prince didn't seem so much interested in tearing down others as he did in getting the message about his own music out. He has said that this tour will be the last time he plays these hits live, and that has caused many of the tour's early shows to sell out well in advance.Monday's show also proved that Prince, 45, was at least as in touch with fans as many younger performers. In addition to the live performance in L.A., the show was simulcast at select theaters in New York, where audience members also received a free copy of the upcoming album "Musicology." Concertgoers at every tour stop will also receive a copy of the album.Monday also marked the start of Prince's "Musicology Download Store" on his Web site, which allows him to sell his songs directly to fans.

PRINCE CHARMINGBy DAN AQUILANTENY PostPRINCE"Musicology"NPG RecordsPrince is back and he's bad - and that's good. With the precision of a debutante at her coming-out party, the fuchsia funkster has masterfully orchestrated his re-emergence into the mainstream with high-profile appearances at the Grammys and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Today's release of "Musicology" is the cherry on the top of a nutty Prince sundae. While his last two albums - the instrumental "N.E.W.S." and the lame jazz/funk "Rainbow Children" - came off as experimental searches for a new direction, on "Musicology" Prince rediscovers his groove. He's also learned that a single-disc album with a dozen good tunes is preferable to a double disc packed with fillers."Musicology" is more focused than any record Prince has done in more than a decade - and every song's a winner. Here are nods to funk, pillow-talk R&B and gut-busting soul - all the stuff that drenched "Purple Rain," minus the overt sexuality.Maybe that notion of salvation through sex doesn't mesh with the old-fashioned sounds he's toying with.More than likely, these new songs reflect the domestic bliss of the newlywed Prince."When You Call My Name" is an open valentine to his bride. Here Prince sounds seductive, devoted and believable as he sings, "I just can't stop writing songs about you 'cause I love you so much."The album's final track, a medium-tempo pop ballad called "Reflection," is more about the everyday business of being in love - not the fireworks of falling in love. This is the big difference between the now 45-year-old Prince and the kid who shook the pop world 25 years ago.But it's the title track that's the album's stand-out. With its balance of syncopated bass work and sax blasts, "Musicology" is a funked-up homage to the musicians Prince believes he owes a debt to - Sly Stone, James Brown and Public Enemy mastermind Chuck D.When you know the artists Prince bows to, the rest of the album's easy to understand.

Prince Rules the Airwaves

EOnline.com

by Sarah Hall

Apr 26, 2004, 9:30 PM PT

Prince is on a quest for network domination.

The diminutive funk rocker will take over five channels at once Wednesday, when MTV, MTV2, BET, VH1 and VH1 Classic simultaneously broadcast a 30-minute concert special taped live last week before an audience in New York.

The concert features songs from Prince's latest album, Musicology, plus some of his classic hits.

"This historic broadcast, going out simultaneously over the five most influential music networks, is a tribute to the music and artistry of one of the most singular talents of our time," said Columbia Records exec Will Botwin. "With a fast-paced combination of brilliant performances and compelling interviews, this show will be remembered as one of the most special entertainment events of the year."

Though each of Viacom-owned networks will air the same musical lineup, the broadcasts will feature different interviews with the singer--giving true fans a reason to test the limits of their TiVos.

"The support for Musicology is wonderful," Prince said in a statement. "We're pleased to broadcast the Musicology special throughout the Viacom music channels. It is great to see audiences around the country embracing music again."

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is currently on his first major arena tour in six years, promoting Musicology, as well as reportedly performing his best-known body of work live for the last time.

That's right--after the tour, the funk legend is reportedly shelving classic hits such as "Purple Rain," "Little Red Corvette," "Raspberry Beret"...and the list goes on. The rationale? He claims he's been "wanting to make room for new music."

He wants his fans to make room for new music as well--to that end he's giving each concertgoer a copy of Musicology at the door.

Originally touted by the singer as a free CD, tour promoters have revealed that the cost of the album was actually factored into the price of each concert ticket--which ranged in cost from $47 to $75 in most cities.

Fans who want to see the show are therefore given no choice about buying the album (albeit at a discounted price). However, judging by strong ticket sales and positive tour reviews, it seems that most are okay with ponying up for the CD.

However, some music industry insiders' feathers were ruffled by Nielsen SoundScan's decision last week to count each album passed out as a sold CD.

"These were presented to the public as being free CDs, they are handed to people who had no choice in buying them, and that really shouldn't be recognized as the same as the other albums on the chart," one record label executive told the Los Angeles Times last week.

The "free" CD strategy is expected to add 400,000 to Prince's sales tally--just 100,000 short of certified gold--and that's not counting the albums he sells at retail.

To date, the Grammy-winning artist has sold more than 100 million records over his 20-year career.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month in his first year of eligibility, where his electrifying opening performance proved he's ready to party like it's 2004.

Prince Causes a Stir with New Videoimdb.comThe video for Prince 's new song "Cinnamon Girl" is causing quite a stir before it's even been released, as it follows the hardships of a teen Arab-American girl in a post 9-11 America. The clip, directed by video veteran Phil Harder, features Oscar-nominated Whale Rider star Keisha Castle-Hughes as an Arab-American girl who is fed up with the anti-Arab sentiments she encounters in everyday life. Disillusioned and angered, New Zealander Castle-Hughes' character detonates a bomb in an airport terminal, exploding herself and others. But a reverse motion immediately following the explosion reveals that it is only a thought of hers. Prince, who only appears in the video intermittently, sings, "Cinnamon girl mixed heritage / Never knew the meaning of color lines / 9-11 turned that all around / When she got accused of this crime." The video will premiere in America next week.

Prince Sued for Painting House Purple

Prince recently upset his landlord, NBA star Carlos Boozer, by allegedly turning a $11.9 million rental property into a purple fantasyland.

Boozer, who is renting a West Hollywood home to the musician for $70,000 a month, sued Prince in January, alleging that the singer painted the title of his new album, 3121, and his "prince" symbol onto the exterior of the house, according to papers obtained by the Smoking Gun Web site.

The suit also alleged that Prince had purple stripes painted on the house and installed a purple monogrammed carpet in the master bedroom.

Lawyers for Prince countered the suit with proof that Boozer had collected his rent without complaint, and the lawsuit was dismissed in February – though the Smoking Gun says Boozer can file again on the same grounds.

Reps for Prince had no comment. His lease reportedly ends May 31.
