Hair Musical

Hair Musical debuted in 1960s when the Vietnam War was in place and the hippie era was also taking new heights. The first tribal musical was the pioneer in musical history that discussed the sensitive topics like sexual revolution, drug abuse and several of its songs provoked anti-Vietnam War thoughts. The serious musical was also the first concept musical on Broadway that hit its theater in 1968 and at that time it met with controversy and got some mixed feedback. However just within two years of its Broadway running it became a huge financial success and it gave a new life to the hippie culture.

The Hair musical production on Broadway was revived in 2007 under the direction of Diane Paulus and it was highly appraised and led the rock musical to win Tony Award, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle award for the best revival of a musical. The 2007 revival of the show includes new cast members and many fresh faces.

Hair Musical has been touring is on its US tour and currently playing at the Pantages Theatre of Los Angeles where it will run through January 23, 2011. The main theme of the show is a group of hippie kids forming themselves as a tribe in New York claiming their freedom from rules and their wish for peace. This was the youth movement in 1960s and 1970’s that changed the world.

The Broadway cast of the Hair musical when on stage not only shows the powerful performances but they also involve the audience by interacting with them. During their Pantages Theatre show audience members were invited on stage to sing and dance at the last song “Let the Sunshine In” while during the title song cast members played with the hair of the audience and they also presented them flowers to show their belief in Flower Power.’ Lea Michele and her costar Chris Colfer from the famous TV show Glee were also spotted leaving the Pantages Theatre after they saw the Hair musical.

The Broadway Production of the musical HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical that won TONY Award in 2009 is currently on its Hair National Tour since October 2010 and will run through June 2011 for shows at venue including Costa Mesa, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston, Hershey, Hartford, Tampa and Miami among others.
