‘Sunshine,’ ‘Nelson’ top Spirit Awards field

Road-trip romp, classroom drama earn five nominations each

Associated Press

Updated: 2 hours, 57 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES - The road-trip romp "Little Miss Sunshine" and the gritty classroom drama "Half Nelson" led contenders Tuesday for the Spirit Awards honoring independent films, each earning five nominations, including best picture.

Other best-picture nominees were "American Gun," a drama about the proliferation of firearms in America; "The Dead Girl," a thriller centered on a serial killer's female victims; and "Pan's Labyrinth," a Spanish-language tale about a girl's dark fantasy life in Fascist Spain.

Maverick filmmaker Robert Altman, who died last week, earned a best-director nomination for his final film, "A Prairie Home Companion." The new James Bond, Daniel Craig, received a supporting-male actor nomination for the Truman Capote drama "Infamous," in which he plays a death-row inmate.

The Spirit Awards, formerly known as the Independent Spirit Awards, honor films produced on comparatively small budgets of less than $20 million. The awards will be presented Feb. 24, the day before the Academy Awards.

"Little Miss Sunshine," the summer mini-hit about a dysfunctional family's comic trek to a child's beauty pageant, also earned two supporting-actor nominations, for Alan Arkin and Paul Dano. Stars Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette and Steve Carell were shut out in the lead-acting categories.

The film also was nominated for best director (husband and wife Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris) and best first screenplay (Michael Arndt).

"Half Nelson" earned lead-acting nominations for Ryan Gosling, who plays an inspiring inner-city teacher with a drug problem, and Shareeka Epps, who plays a promising student who becomes both his pupil and counselor.

Ryan Fleck earned two nominations for "Half Nelson," for best director and first screenplay, co-written with Anna Boden.

Other nominees for best female lead were Catherine O'Hara, "For Your Consideration"; Elizabeth Reaser, "Sweet Land"; Michelle Williams, "Land of Plenty"; and Robin Wright Penn, "Sorry, Haters."

Joining Gosling in the best male lead category were Aaron Eckhart, "Thank You for Smoking"; Edward Norton, "The Painted Veil"; Ahmad Razvi, "Man Push Cart"; and Forest Whitaker, "American Gun."

Supporting-actress nominees: Melonie Diaz, "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints"; Marcia Gay Harden, "American Gun"; Mary Beth Hurt, "The Dead Girl"; Frances McDormand, "Friends with Money"; and Amber Tamblyn, "Stephanie Daley."

Along with Arkin, Craig and Dano, supporting-actor nominees were Raymond J. Barry, "Steel City," and Channing Tatum, "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints."

The Spirit Award nominations mark the beginning of a flurry of key awards announcements leading up to Jan. 23's Oscar nominations. December brings Golden Globe nominations, best-of-the-year picks from major critics groups and other film honors.

Since they honor independent and sometimes obscure films, the Spirit Awards often do not reflect the overall field that will compete for the Oscars and other high-profile Hollywood awards. Last year, though, many key Spirit and Oscar nominees overlapped, including "Capote," "Brokeback Mountain" and "Good Night, and Good Luck."

Nominees were chosen by members of the nonprofit cinema groups Film Independent and the Independent Film Project.

If that's true...bye-bye career. ;) In all seriousness, he'll probably deny the article, once his star rises.

Here's Channing with his "Step Up" co-star Jenna Dewan.

And yes it's a slow day. Can't you tell? Shit, it's Sunday! Go to church or something.

By Borys Kit

Feb 22, 2008

David Wenham and Stephen Graham have joined the cast of Universal's "Public Enemies," Michael Mann's gangster film starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

An adaptation of Brian Burrough's book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43," the film centers on the government's attempt to stop John Dillinger and his gang. Depp is playing Dillinger to Bale's famed FBI agent Melvin Purvis.

G.I. Joe Movie Trilogy on the Horizon

Posted Image

Channing Tatum, the actor who is probably most famously known for his roles in "Step Up" and "Step Up 2 the Streets" (at least to me, he is) is seen here on the set of his latest film, which is the big-screen adaptation of the Hasbro toy and cartoon series, G.I. Joe. According to one of the movie's stars, Dennis Quaid, it's going to be a trilogy. "They're definitely out to do a franchise, so this is actually my first three-picture deal," said Quaid to reporters.

I hope the fact that Channing is involved means that there will somehow be an international dance-off that will determine the course of human life on the planet as we know it.

Jenna Dewan-Channing Tatum's Wedding Coming Soon

By Laura Hahn

Channing Tatum and fiancée Jenna Dewan like to keep their lips sealed about their engagement, but few people can miss the huge ring on her finger.

"Almost everybody goes, 'Oh my God, that is so big,' " Dewan told PEOPLE at the New York premiere of Tatum's movie Fighting. "And I'm like, 'I know, I feel the same way.' "

Although she wouldn't give details, the actress-dancer told PEOPLE that the wedding of the two 28-year-olds will happen soon. "We're so busy, and you know when you're so busy, wedding planning is so hard to do," she says. "But it will be soon. Sooner than later."

Dewan says that when it comes to planning the big day, "I seriously haven't even thought about it. I'm the worst bride in the world. I'm just so happy, and I'm so enjoying being engaged. I don't want to rush anything."

Meanwhile, when asked about wedding plans, Tatum would only say, "I'm sorry, I kind of like to keep it a little more private."

So does the couple, who became engaged last September, feel any different now than they did before their engagement? "I think [we feel] the same," says Dewan. "We're both so happy. It's great."

Does anyone else remember Howard Stern's "Jenna Dewan" game? It was a game based on "celebrities" whose names you shouldn't know. As in, the only reason anybody knows Jenna Dewan is because she went out with Clooney (and Shane West).

PHOTO: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan on Their Wedding Day!

By Janet Mock

Eat your heart out, ladies: Channing Tatum is officially off the market – and PEOPLE's got the exclusive wedding photo to prove it.

The hunky G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra star, 29, married his Step Up dance partner Jenna Dewan, 28, on Saturday in Malibu, Calif.

Dressed in a peach-and-ivory Reem Acra couture ball gown, the bride looked dreamily into her Giorgio Armani-suited groom's eyes as they wed. The pair exchanged vows before 220 guests – they included maid of honor Emmanuelle Chriqui and bridesmaid Haylie Duff – at an oceanside estate. Tatum's 12 groomsmen wore Armani tuxedos with evening shirts and black silk neckties.

"I loved working with Jenna. She is so fresh and young," designer Reem Acra said of her client. "Her input on what she envisioned for her gown was essential and I am thrilled to have made her dream wedding gown come true."

August 7, 2009 -- (PAGESIX.COM)

THE author of a best seller about vicious Mafia hit man Richard Kuklinski has pulled the plug on a deal with Hollywood producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who had optioned the rights, because he says he couldn't stomach the idea of Channing Tatum in the title role.

Phil Carlo tells us that after he penned "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer" in 2006, the book was optioned by di Bonaventura, producer of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and the upcoming Angelina Jolie drama "Salt."

When the 18-month option ran out last month, di Bonaventura asked to extend the contract for two more weeks, hoping he could complete financing for the movie. But Carlo says that when he heard Tatum was being wooed to star in the lurid gangster tale, he decided not to go ahead.

"I had to turn him down. I really hated the idea of Channing Tatum. I told di Bonaventura that this is not the guy to play one of the most feared killers of the 20th Century," Carlo said. "I think Mickey Rourke would really be good. He's got that sense of danger, and there's a similarity between the two. But it's not Channing Tatum."

Kuklinski was a notorious contract killer who worked for the Gambinos and boasted about having murdered more than 200 men. He earned his ghoulish nickname because of his method of disguising the time of death of his murder victims by chilling their bodies in an industrial freezer.

In Tatum's defense, he's tackled rough-and-tumble roles before. He portrayed Pretty Boy Floyd in the recent Johnny Depp hit "Public Enemies" and plays a tough field commander named Duke in "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra."

Di Bonaventura's spokesman, Paul Bloch, declined to comment.

Carlo's next true-crime tale is "The Butcher: Anatomy of a Mafia Psychopath," about Bonanno crime family killer Tommy Pitera, out from HarperCollins in October.

Channing Tatum and wife share 'symbolic' tattoos

Channing Tatum, wife Jenna Dewan marked honeymoon in unforgettable way

The pair got tattoos that spell out "side by side" in Balinese.

"We wanted to do something symbolic," said Tatum

By Reagan Alexander

(People.com) -- Though their honeymoon in Bali was cut short by a bout of food poisoning, newlyweds Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan made sure to mark the occasion in a permanent way -- with matching tattoos that spell out "side by side" in Balinese.

"It was a joint decision," Tatum, 29, told PEOPLE at a Los Angeles screening of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." "We always wanted to get a tattoo of something together."

But the two, who met while filming 2006's "Step Up," wanted their ink to be meaningful.

"We weren't going to do each other's names," Tatum said, laughing. "We wanted to do something symbolic."

So, the happy couple chose a phrase that they hold near to their hearts, and now, even closer to their skin.

"It was in one of our vows to each other," the actor said, as his wife showed off her recently inked left foot. "We took it from that."
