Zion 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2005 She's Come Undone is a great book, one I need to read again.I just finished Nine on Top by Janet Evanovich...I love the Stephanie Plum books, easy reads and they are so funny! Not sure what I'll read next, I'm not in the mood for anything heavy. Any suggestions?

I'm starting "Le Divorce" by Diane Johnson. chick lit. The reader reviews aren't that great..but going to give it a try.

MMM1 1 Report post Posted June 28, 2005 Just finished "Shutter Island" by Dennis Lehane (author of Mystic River). Fantastic psychological thriller..kept me going up until the very end.
hazelnut 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2005 MMM - I loved 'She's Come Undone' and 'Shutter Island'! You'll like 'I Know This Much is True' too. We seem to have very similar taste in books! Two of the best books that I've read recently are 'The Time Travelers Wife' and 'The Confessions of Max Tivoli.'
MMM1 1 Report post Posted June 29, 2005 Hazel, I have "The time traveler's wife" and have been holding off reading it since it's supposed to be so good I have heard about "Max Tivoli" that is on my list. Question. Don't give away any spoilers..but how long did it take you to figure out "Shutter Island"..beginning/middle/or end?? I've read on some boards people figured it out at the beginning..yikes I'm so slow
hazelnut 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2005 I didn't figure it out either!
MMM1 1 Report post Posted July 11, 2005 Only got half way through "Le Divorce" ..that one went into the "don't waste your time" pile.Finished the crime/thriller "A Faint Cold Fear" by Karin Slaughter. The ending really left me numb and scratching my head. Anyone else read it?
BiteMeAngel 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2005 I just finished the Seabiscut book that the movie was based on. It was pretty good. Kind of think jockey's are insane now after hearing what they do, but I guess they're just a different breed of person. I'd recommend the book. Not the fastest read, but it kept me interested and I learned some history.
MMM1 1 Report post Posted July 12, 2005 Angel, I've seen this book called "Riding Lessons" in the bookstores..it looks like it might be pretty good involving horses..it is fiction not nonfiction.
Rebelgirl 1 Report post Posted July 12, 2005 Just got done reading "Cracking more cases" by Dr. Henry Lee. It was okay. John Douglas the ex-FBI profilers books are 100 times better.
BiteMeAngel 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2005 I read Homicide awhile ago. It's the book the show was based on. The author was a reporter in Baltimore and tagged along with the force for a year I think. The book started out slow, but it was amazing. And it wasnt' until the end that I realized all the cases were real cases and all the talking that was in quotes were real quotes from the detectives. I think the author sent a rough copy of the book to all the detectives on the force to get their imput. The detectives gave him notes like, "I wasn't thinking x in that situation, I was thinking y." It's an amazing insight into their lives and careers if you can get though the first three chapters. I recommend it.
MMM1 1 Report post Posted August 1, 2005 Just finished "In her shoes" by Jennifer Weiner.Good book..a little deeper chick lit than expected.I wanted to read this book before the movie came out (The movie stars Cameron Diaz as Maggie, Toni Collette as Rose, and Shirley Maclaine as Ella). I just found the character of Maggie so unlikeable for at least 85% of the book. She's a spoiled brat(yea, she did have some problems but still...). But amazingly enough towards the very end..she does become very likeable (the last chapter is sooo good..had a happy cry). In all honesty, my favorite characters were Ella and Mrs Lefkowitz . I'm just curious if in the movie, they are going to make Diaz a loveable goof or stick with the book and make her a selfish brat.
cydonia 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2005 Just started "Persuader" by Lee Child.
MMM1 1 Report post Posted August 2, 2005 Cy, I've never read any of Child's books..are they good?
cydonia 0 Report post Posted August 2, 2005 I'm only about a 1/4 into it, but it only took about 2 pages to get "into" it. It's a pretty fast read - I just haven't been in the mood to read b/c of headaches.I'll let you know when I finish it
MMM1 1 Report post Posted August 13, 2005 Just Finished "When Calls the Heart" by Jannette Oke. It's an older book..inspirational romance..it's a series of books set in the early days of the Canadian West. It was nice..like a "Little House on the Prairie" type book. Also just read "The Lake House" by James Patterson.
meg5117 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2005 I am re-reading Herman Wouk's World War II books The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. I re-read them every few years because they are real favorites. Â I just finished The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler and was fairly disappointed. I expected better from a book that uses Jane's name in the title. MMM1 1 Report post Posted August 17, 2005 Welcome Meg. I saw that Jane Austen book at the bookstore..it was tempting me..too bad it wasn't better.Just finished "Shopgirl" by Steve Martin. Another book that I wanted to read before the movie comes out (movie stars Claire Danes,Steve Martin & Jonathon Swartzman (sp)). Surprisingly well written..but I found it quite dark. I'm curious if the film version will come out as a "lighter" piece. I read that it had undergone several rewrites (usually not a good sign) but Martin said he was pleased with the end product. If they follow the book, it should be a good performance piece for Danes but that remains to be seen.
meg5117 0 Report post Posted August 18, 2005 I'll have ot check it out at the library. Thanks! Â Incidentally, speaking of books into movies -- was anyone else grossly disappointed by the movie version of Girl With A Pearl Earring ? I the book, and found the movie insipid. They left out all of the best parts, even great visual parts like the way Griet arranged her vegetables. Â Any thoughts?
hazelnut 0 Report post Posted August 18, 2005 Meg - I just finished Girl With a Pearl Earring during lunch today and was thinking of renting the movie soon. If it's that bad, I don't want to see it and ruin the imagery from the book. Thanks for the warning!MMM - I've seen Steve Martin books at the library but never picked one up. I'll have to look for that one too.
MMM1 1 Report post Posted August 18, 2005 "Shopgirl" is a very short novella..can be read in a couple of hours (luckily I got it in a book lot off ebay so it didn't cost me hardly anything)...getting it from the library would be a good way to go :)I was also disappointed with the movie for GWPE (even with Firth in the cast)...thought the book was great..really enjoy Chevalier's writing.
