popbitch.com >> Backstreet's Back <<Ageing boy band get soft rock makeover Popbitch's favourite ever boy band, the Backstreet Boys, is back, with an unwise grunge makeover and a new Maroon 5 direction. During the band's five-year hiatus, Nick's solo career bombed and he ended up with a DIU and a rep for beating up Paris Hilton, Brian had kids, lost his hair and recorded a Christian album, AJ stayed sober, Howie didn't make it as a movie star and Kevin starred on Broadway as Billy Flynn in Chicago. Now, the boys' harmonies sound as good as ever live but the matching white dinner jackets, fedoras, and choreographed dance steps sit uneasily with the Bryan Adams' soft rock tunes. Only Nick and AJ don't look totally uncomfortable. New album Never Gone (or Never Gonna Sell - as it's known in the industry) is out in June.Listen to the new single:http://www.nly-media.com/audios/Backstreet...0-%20Incomplete[Not-Like-You.Com].mp3Listen to Brian's I-Love-Jesus single:Listen: http://www.reunionrecords.com/brianlittrell/

people.comTUESDAY, JUNE 14: Backstreet's back, all right! After a four-year hiatus, the Backstreet Boys are returning with a new album, Never Gone. With 'N Sync on indefinite hiatus, the timing could be right: Backstreet has the boy-band market pretty much to themselves. Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean, Howie Dorough and Kevin Richardson are already on the charts with their first single, "Incomplete." What to expect from the grown-up Boys? "With the things we have all gone through, the music has this new outlook," Carter, who's also Paris Hilton's ex, tells PEOPLE. "But it does sound like us."

http://www.sfgate.com/columnists/dailydish/ BACKSTREET BOYS TOUR CHAOS The Backstreet Boys much-hyped reunion tour is in trouble before it has begun -- the aging boy band is struggling to sell tickets. According to reports, concert promoters have scaled down the size of venues and are even giving away a free ticket with every two purchased, three weeks before they start the tour to promote their comeback album, Never Die. A source tells Page Six, "Tickets aren't selling. Nothing is sold out. It is starting to look like a Spinal Tap tour."

From E online:Nick Carter Suing Madby Sarah Hall Jul 21, 2005, 4:00 PM PTNick Carter wants a former roommate of his sister's to quit playin' games with his legal status. The Backstreet Boy, 25, has threatened to file suit against one Kathryn Kelly, after he was named in a lawsuit Kelly filed against Carter's sister, Bobby Jean, alleging that the younger Carter had battered former roomie Kelly on several occasions in April. In addition to B.J., Kelly fingered both Nick Carter and his father, Robert, in her court documents, claiming that they had not properly supervised 23-year-old B.J., who was purportedly employed by her father as her brother's assistant at the time of the alleged attacks. According to Kelly's lawsuit, filed earlier this month in Los Angeles Superior Court, her grapples with B.J. Carter caused her "serious physical injury." On Apr. 14, B.J. "stabbed Kelly with a knife in her thumb, leg and arms," according to the court filing. One week later, she "punched, choked, pinned and forcefully struck Kelly multiple times." Kelly's lawsuit claims B.J. Carter has a lengthy history with alcoholism, substance abuse and domestic violence and cites her three prior convictions for assault and battery and felony assault with a deadly weapon. She is seeking unspecified compensatory, punitive and exemplary damages. Apparently, Kelly also feel that B.J.'s popster big brother should share some of the blame for not sticking around and keeping an eye on his little sis. Unfortunately for her, Carter doesn't see it that way. Carter's attorney, Martin Singer, called Kelly's claims "frivolous and fictional" and accused her of trying to capitalize on Carter's fame. "The claims filed against Nick Carter by the accuser are absolutely without merit," Singer said in a statement. "It is obvious that the only reason Nick Carter was named in this lawsuit was so that she could get publicity, since her lawsuit does not contain any claim that Nick Carter personally engaged in any wrongful conduct harming the accuser. We are confident that the court will promptly dispose of these frivolous and fictional claims against Nick Carter." Carter's rep, Juliette Harris, chimed in, denying that the Backstreeter had any connection to Kelly and pointing out that Carter does not engage in business dealings with his family. "Nick Carter has nothing to do with the accuser and has been named in her suit because of his fame," Harris said. "After the case is completed he plans on filing for sanctions against her and her counsel to stop her and others like her from attempting to capitalize on his name. Additionally, there are no business relationships between Nick and any of the Carters therefore no associations should be made." Kelly's attorney, Bryan Altman, told Los Angeles' City News Service: "We don't have a practice of commenting on opposing counsel's PR spins on behalf of their client." He also said that more details about the alleged attacks would come out. "We feel comfortable and confident enough in what our client has told us that she is the victim here," Kelly said, "and we stand behind her 100 percent." Carter has likely had his fill of the legal system for the time being. Last month, he pleaded guilty to a charge of drunken driving and was fined $1,200, ordered to serve three months in an alcohol program and placed on three years' informal probation. Carter and the rest of the Backstreet Boys kick off their nationwide summer tour Friday in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough to Marry

People

Posted Image

Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough and his longtime girlfriend, Leigh Boniello, are engaged, the couple tell PEOPLE exclusively.

They plan to marry later this year.

"She wasn't expecting it, and I was quite nervous – more nervous about proposing to her in front of 40 family and friends than about performing in front of 40,000 people onstage," Dorough says of the New Year's Eve proposal at Boniello's family home in New Jersey.

The couple, both 33, met in 2000, when Boniello, a film-exec-turned-real-estate-broker, was working as the Backstreet Boys' Webmaster.

They say they were "very careful" to keep their engagement private at first, but with the wedding right around the corner, felt it was finally time to share the news. "We're very, very excited," says Dorough.

The proposal to his "soulmate" was carefully planned in a matter of days. Dorough says he looked "at least 40 or 50 diamonds" before he prepared his "Will you marry me?" speech while he and an unsuspecting Boniello were on an annual benefit cruise. (The trip was to support the Dorough Lupus Foundation, founded in honor of his late sister.)

"And I asked her mother, father and grandmother for their permission," he adds.

"He decided to pull a practical joke on me in front of my whole family," Boniello says of the big day. "He acted like he forgot to give me one present for Christmas – it was in a large box."

Playing off an inside joke that Dorough was "dangling carrots" in front of Boniello whenever they talked about marriage during their 6-year relationship, she opened the box and found three large carrots inside.

"She was laughing and trying to tell everyone the joke and by the time she turned around I was down on one knee with the real carrot," says Dorough.

Make that more than three carats. Dorough, a native of Orlando, designed the engagement ring – one round, brilliant-cut diamond surrounded by two smaller round diamonds, all set in platinum – with a family friend at Plantation Jewelers in Winter Garden, Fla.

"It meant a lot for my whole family to hear it," she says. "The room was filled with love, more than I ever expected."

The couple is planning a wedding for 250 guests while the Backstreet Boys, currently promoting their new single "Inconsolable," prepare to release their sixth studio album on Oct. 30.

"We've invited all the Backstreet Boys, including Kevin [Richardson]," says Dorough, who has no hard feelings about Richardson's departure from the group last summer. "Actually, Kevin was one of the first people I told about our engagement."

And like Richardson – whose wife Kristin gave birth to son Mason in July – Dorough and Boniello say they can't wait to start a family.

"Hopefully I will be the next one to add to the [backstreet Boy] family," says Dorough.

Nick Carter: I Made Excuses Just to Party

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking candidly about his 10-year struggle with substance abuse, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter says his road to recovery was rocky.

"I would make excuses to just go out to drink and party," he says on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Thursday. "It was excessive ... Alcohol kind of kicked it off and then once the alcohol wasn't doing it for me I would lean on other things."

As for when things changed, "I had a lot of rude awakenings, warning signs, DUIs," Carter, 29, tells DeGeneres. "I realized that it was wrong, [but] I decided to go and sort of punish myself. I went to the classes, did everything I was required to do. Then I'd . . . get back into it. Sort of fool myself in a way."

Being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart muscle, last year helped him turn things around, he told PEOPLE.

Working out changed his focus, too. "It helped my self esteem and then other things started replacing drinking and parties, [like] sports," he tells DeGeneres. "I am sober now. I realize that I'm human and my goal in life is to be the best person that I can be."

Backstreet Boy Littrell Allowed To Fly Home

Backstreet Boys star Brian Littrell has reportedly been released from quarantine and allowed to fly back home to Los Angeles after being diagnosed with swine flu.

The group were returning to the US from a video shoot in Japan last week when Littrell began to feel unwell. He later learned that he had contracted the H1N1 virus and was placed in seclusion in a New York hotel, TMZ reports.

Bandmate Nick Carter said of his isolation: "They locked him up in the hotel... He couldn't get food handed to him; they had to leave it at the door [of his room] and just walk away."

Littrell, who told fans about the virus in an online video on Monday, has since been given the all-clear.

Backstreet Boy -- Engaging Behavior at Nightclub

AJ McLean had a crazy night in Vegas -- dude proposed to his girlfriend in the middle of a nightclub ... minutes after running into a jewelry store and buying the ring.

It all went down inside the Hard Rock Hotel Friday night -- AJ and his then girlfriend Rochelle Karidis were partying inside the Wasted Space nightclub, when he sprinted to the jewelry store inside the casino, picked out a ring, and ran back into club.

When the clock struck midnight -- AJ's birthday -- he ran to the stage, grabbed the mic, dropped to his knee and popped the question ... and she said yes.
