Amanda Bynes

Yeah, to be flip about it - crazy is one thing - but they have to actually show she's a danger to herself or others, right?

Yep. The psych wards become revolving doors because long term holds are nearly impossible to get and/or maintain. A person with a psychotic disorder threatens self or others, enters psych hospital where they're stabilized with meds, then they're released, where they usually stop taking their meds and have another breakdown, which starts the process all over again. The mental health care system in this country is really messed up. There are also many non-dangerous mentally ill people whose functioning is severely impaired and no one pays attention to them. They usually end up on the street because their families, if they have them, can't take care of them (you can't force an adult to get help or take meds). Two thirds of homeless people are schizophrenic, according to one of my psych professors. I know that the mental institutions of the past weren't great, but it doesn't seem like getting rid of them altogether was the answer.

::Sorry for the diatribe. Steps off soap box::

you can actually thank Governor Reagan for that one - at least here in California. At that time it was seen as a way of saving tax dollars . . . or so the party line went I believe.

Yep, I completely agree the mental health system in this country is totally messed up (at the same time, many other countries don't have mental health systems AT ALL and some people are just chained up outside the family house, so.... - I work with some global mental health researchers sometimes ;-)

It's one of the first social services to be cut in rural areas - because use of services can be so low (still a big stigma against mental illness and hard to encourage people to seek treatment).

Amanda Bynes files to end conservatorship after nearly 9 years

February 25, 2022 | 1:22pm

https://pagesix.com/2022/02/25/amanda-bynes-files-to-end-conservatorship-after-nearly-9-years/

Amanda Bynes filed court documents Wednesday to end her conservatorship after nearly nine years, Page Six exclusively confirms.

The former actress, 35, requested to terminate both the conservatorship of her person and estate in a petition submitted at the Ventura County Superior Court in California.

Bynes also filed a capacity declaration Tuesday, as California requires all conservatorship cases to have updated records about a conservatee’s mental state from their physician, psychologist or religious healing practitioner.

A hearing is scheduled for March 22.

Bynes’ attorney, David A. Esquibias, said in a statement to People Friday, “Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary.”

......

The former child star’s lawyer, Esquibias, told Page Six in September 2021 that she was “doing really well, besides anxiety and trauma,” and that her conservatorship could be terminated whenever it was “no longer convenient.”

Amanda Bynes placed on psychiatric hold after roaming streets naked

https://pagesix.com/2023/03/20/amanda-bynes-placed-on-psychiatric-hold-after-roaming-streets-naked/

Amanda Bynes was placed on a psychiatric hold early Sunday after being found roaming the streets of Los Angeles naked.

An eyewitness told TMZ Monday that the former “Amanda Show” star, who has bipolar disorder, flagged down a car without any clothes on her person and told the driver she was coming down from a psychiatric episode.

Bynes, 36, then called 911 on herself and was taken to a nearby police station, where a mental health expert determined she needed to be placed on a 5150 hold, according to the outlet.

The troubled star reportedly remains in a facility’s care. A 5150 hold typically lasts 72 hours but can be extended based on a patient’s need.

She had been set to attend ’90s Con in Connecticut with her former “All That” co-stars Saturday but canceled due to an undisclosed illness.

Bynes’ attorney didn’t immediately return Page Six’s request for comment, but her ex-fiancé Paul Michael tells Page Six exclusively that the Nickelodeon alum has been “off her meds.”

Bynes’ psychiatric episode happened nearly one year to the day after she was freed from an eight-year conservatorship.

So very sad. Glad she didn't harm herself, had enough presence of mind or self-preservation to turn herself in for help.
