Hollywood couple Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are furious with a construction company they hired to build their hideaway in Idaho - after they revealed details of the home in a lawsuit. The actors were hoping to keep their 10-acre Ketchum home a super secret, and were horrified when Storey Construction revealed all in a $1.9 million suit. The company claims Hanks and Wilson owe them $1.9 million for work they completed on the hideaway. The suit has been sealed by an Idaho judge and the two parties will argue the case before a panel in September. Tom and Rita aren't the only stars to own a home in the quiet former railroad town - Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger all have property in Ketchum.

The Da Vinci Code isn't the only thing Tom Hanks is cracking this month. He also cracked the Guinness Book of World Records.
The two-time Oscar winner's way with moviegoers has earned him the title of Actor with Most Consecutive $100 Million-Grossing Movies, with seven consecutive big box-office films, the record-tracking folks announced Wednesday.
America's favorite movie star started his lucrative streak with Saving Private Ryan ($216.5 million) in 1998 and capped it with 2002's Catch Me If You Can ($164.6 million).
Hanks, 49, has appeared in 14 movies overall that have grossed $100 million or more domestically, and he would have had 11 six-figure hits in a row if his directorial debut, That Thing You Do, had done its thing four times as well in 1996. The film, in which Hanks had a supporting role, netted only $25.8 million.
He's come a long way from Bosom Buddies. Hanks also shares a world record with Spencer Tracy, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Marlon Brando and a few other legends for "Most Oscars Won, Best Actor." Each one of those household names has two, with Hanks' statuettes coming for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. Tracy and Hanks were the only two to get their honors in consecutive years.
Although The Ladykillers ($39.8 million) and The Terminal ($77.9 million) terminated his streak, The Polar Express and its $162.8 million showing laid the foundation for a new record. Hanks' next effort is almost sure to prolong his box-office prowess, although $100 million might be aiming a little low.
The Da Vinci Code opens May 19 in wide release (after its May 17 premiere at the Cannes Film Festival) and the megabuzz surrounding the Ron Howard-directed project practically guarantees it will be one of the biggest films of the year.
For starters, more than 40 million people read the Dan Brown novel the film is based on, and 1 million copies of the paperback version were snatched up its first month out. But a little controversy never hurt moviegoers' curiosity, either (except in the case of Tom Cruise, perhaps?) and clashes with the Catholic Church, a few legal snafus for Brown and talk of possible boycotts have probably only upped the hype meter.
Oh, and people just love Tom Hanks.
Currently, according to online sports book BetCRIS, the odds of The Da Vinci Code having a $105.1 million or better opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) are 2 to 1. More than $120.1 million--4 to 1.
If you like to live dangerously, you could go for the 25 to 1 odds that the film will make $35 million or less, but we wouldn't recommend it.
Of course, not everyone is going to watch Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno and Ian McKellen tearing up the streets of Paris, London and Scotland to solve the fictional mystery to end all fictional mysteries.
Senior Vatican officials have called for a boycott of the film, and the Council of Churches in Jordan and Roman Catholic activists in India want their governments to ban the film completely. The Greek Orthodox Church and a top aide to the president of the Philippines reportedly are none too happy, either.
Those in the United States who are concerned about the film's take on the Bible and the Catholic Church seem to be bypassing boycotts in favor of "educational outreach"--books denouncing The Da Vinci Code's theories and lectures about the Gospels. Concerned Women for America, for one, has issued a pamphlet titled "The Top 10 Da Vinci Code Distortions."
Opus Dei, the group that went so far as to demand that Howard and Sony Pictures Entertainment place a disclaimer at the start of the film denoting it as fiction, has also nixed the idea of a boycott. Howard, meanwhile, refused to add the message to his finished product.
A leader from the Catholic sect cited the controversy over Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ as a reason to not protest too loudly. What started out as a film with what appeared to be little mainstream appeal turned into a $370 million phenomenon.
But while anti-Da Vinci Coders are getting all the press these days, the millions of people intending to see the movie are flying quietly under the radar.
"The Da Vinci Code has become so popular that you can go anywhere in the world and odds are you'll run into someone who has read it once, if not twice," BetCRIS CEO Mickey Richardson said in a statement. "The novel took the world by storm, and I would say the probability of the movie doing the same is pretty high."

FORT BENNING, GA. — Actor Tom Hanks was inducted Thursday as an honorary member of the U.S. Army's Ranger Hall of Fame for his accurate portrayal of a World War II Army Ranger company commander in the movie "Saving Private Ryan" and for his continued commitment to honoring those who served in the war.
Besides his role in "Saving Private Ryan," Hanks was cited for serving as the national spokesman for the World War II Memorial Campaign, for being the honorary chairman of the D-Day Museum Capital Campaign, and for his role in writing and helping to produce the Emmy Award-winning miniseries, "Band of Brothers."
Hanks, who was unable to attend the induction ceremony, becomes the first actor to receive such an honor.
Each year, the Army's elite Ranger units and regimental associations nominate a small number of Ranger Hall of Fame candidates, who are then scrutinized by a selection board. All but honorary inductees like Hanks have to be graduates of the Army's grueling Ranger School at Fort Benning, or they have to have served in a Ranger unit.
The latest 17 inductees were mostly career soldiers, ranging from generals to sergeants. The only civilian was U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall, whose district is in the middle Georgia, including Macon. Marshall is a decorated Vietnam War veteran, Ranger school graduate and member of the House Armed Services Committee.

She is very, very attractive...Have you looked at him lately. The old double standard of good looks is still alive. BTW I do remember that Frasier episode, she was great in it.
Yeah, I saw that episode. Didn't think she was anything but horse-faced in that, either. Sorry. I'm not saying that he's handsome, either. It's just that he's a huge star with gigantic bucks and often those guys go for hot little numbers and I find her, well, homely. She's got a strange thing going on with an overbite and really long face. However, she does seem to be a very pleasant person.

The man who could take his own plane actually hired a rock 'n' roller's-outfitted-type $500,000 bus. Where one rents such a vehicle I haven't the foggiest. And with God's help, I'll never have to care.
For his 50th birthday, his celebration party for himself was to pack along 14 of those nearest and closest. Guy friends and kids. And hit six different cities: Baltimore, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland. We're talking the garden spots of America. And visit six baseball parks. Oh-boy-oh-joy! Like imagine the supreme excitement of actually watching In Person the Cleveland Indians. Wow! Can't you just see cellphones heating up with these lucky folk calling their poor uninvited pals who were rotting at home by their temperature-controlled Hollywood pools watching their sports on 50-inch plasma TVs while servants handed them iced drinks?
Anyway, Hanks who loves the game and roots for the Yankees here and the Dodgers there, even stopped at playgrounds along the route so his passengers could all play ball.
How I envy that trip.

In newly unearthed court papers published in the upcoming bio "The Tom Hanks Enigma," by David Gardner, actress Susan Dillingham charges that Hanks harassed her and attempted to kill her career.
"My husband has repeatedly verbally abused and humiliated me during the past 90 days in my home. This caused me to suffer great emotional distress," Dillingham wrote an L.A. court in asking for a restraining order against Hanks.
Dillingham, whose stage name was Samantha Lewes, died from bone cancer in 2002. During their messy divorce, which began in 1985 and dragged on for three years, the actress said Hanks tried to force her into depositions as she took the lead roles in a series of plays. "[It's] designed to harass and upset me at a time when I should be focusing all of my energies on my job," she wrote in one legal missive.
Hanks shot back in his own legal filing, alleging that Dillingham was delaying a divorce trial "merely to harass me and try to squeeze an unfair settlement out of me."
The couple - college sweethearts who wed after their son, Colin, was born in 1977 - began to have problems when Hanks' career took off in hits like "Splash" and Dillingham's stalled. They also had a daughter, Elizabeth, in 1982.
"Tom was spending less and less time at home . . . [and] with two children to care for and a husband who was away for long stretches . . . it was difficult [for her] to get work," Gardner writes. A year after the divorce, Hanks wed actress Rita Wilson.

A report is swirling around the Internet that Tom Hanks died this morning after falling off a cliff in New Zealand during a movie shoot. TMZ is told by New Zealand authorities that the report is totally bogus.
An official from Interpol, the police in Wellington, New Zealand, confirms to TMZ that no report of an accidental death has been taken and they are certain no such incident occurred.
TMZ has obtained a photo of Tom Hanks taken just yesterday in Ontario, California, during the filming of "Charlie Wilson's War."

Phyllida Lloyd, a theater veteran who helmed the original London staging, is in talks to make her feature directing debut.

November and December is the last chance for the studios to chum the Oscar waters in the hopes of reeling in a gold statuette. And many of these big movies don’t offer just one star turn, but two or even three. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe duel it out in “American Gangster.” Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts share the screen in “Charlie Wilson’s War.” Add to that Oscar favorites like Daniel Day-Lewis and stars on the rise such as Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem, and you have some heady movies to choose from this winter.
“Charlie Wilson’s War”
Starring: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Om Puri, Jud Tylor, Nazanin Boniadi
Director: Mike Nichols
Story: Based on a true story, this film tells the story of liberal Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson (Hanks) who teamed with a rogue CIA operative (Hoffman) to arm the Afghan rebels against the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The two manipulated Congress, the CIA and a host of foreign governments. Roberts plays the Houston socialite with the money to back Wilson’s actions.
Buzz: Is there such a thing as a sure thing? If so, this is it. With Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing”) penning the screenplay based on George Crile’s book and Nichols (“The Graduate”) in the director’s chair, this film is sure to be whip smart, incredibly funny and slyly critical at the same time. Hanks and Hoffman are definite Oscar threats here.

Bonham Carter plays his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, who makes rather strange meat pies. Alan Rickman costars as the judge who sent Sweeney to prison. Cohen is rival barber, Signor Adolfo Pirelli.
Buzz: London’s Daily Mail reported that all the blood in this film left Warner Bros. executives a bit squeamish, and the studio asked Burton to make some cuts. Hmm, what did they expect from a musical about a man who slits people’s throats? Burton told Entertainment Weekly, “To do an R-rated musical with 70 percent singing was kinda like, ‘Well I haven’t done this one before.’” Burton and Depp (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Ed Wood”) bring out the best in each other. This challenging film could snag Academy Award gold.

The sisters become nurses; one seeks forgiveness, while the other longs for her lost love.
Buzz: This film was a hit at this year’s Toronto Film Festival and currently has 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.com. The Guardian Unlimited’s Peter Bradshaw wrote, “There are moments — delirious, languorous, romantic moments — when this film appears to have the lineaments of a classic.” And Variety’s Derek Elley said, “Rarely has a book sprung so vividly to life, but also worked so enthrallingly in pure movie terms.” This is one that should not be missed.

Buzz: This film is based on author Cormac McCarthy’s (“The Road”) book, which does not shy away from violence of Biblical proportions. The Coens go back to their “Blood Simple” roots with this one. The critical response reads more like admiration than pure love. Salon’s Andrew O’Heir wrote, “My gut feeling is that this ambitious experiment doesn't entirely work.” Variety’s Todd McCarthy called it “one of (the Coen brothers) very best films, a bloody classic of its type destined for acclaim.” Bardem is a definite Oscar contender — and don’t be surprised if Jones or Brolin sneak into the mix.

Critic Emanuel Levy is already calling the film “clearly one of the best pictures of the year.” Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) was originally set to direct back in 2004, before the studio pulled him and shelved the movie. Producer Brian Grazer convinced Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”) to step in.

Buzz: After seeing it at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Cinematical’s Scott Weinberg wrote, “It's more than a ‘departure’ for the director; it's a monumental display of ‘evolution’ that'll wow the established fans and impress a helluva lot more new ones.” Up until now, Anderson (“Magnolia,” “Boogie Nights”) has been known for his large ensemble pictures, but this is an epic that’s focused squarely on Lewis’ character — and one that makes him a leading contender for Oscar.

Critic David Poland called the film “a very demanding, but very clear-minded piece of filmmaking,” and added that it is a film that needs to be seen more than once to be truly absorbed.

Buzz: This is Coppola’s first directorial effort since 1997’s “The Rainmaker.” On his Web site, he compares his situation to his lead character’s, writing, “Like (the film’s) leading character, Dominic, I was tortured and stumped by my inability to complete an important work.” This is a smaller, more intimate film for Coppola, who always wanted to make films more like “The Conversation” and less like the epic “Godfather” films he is known for. This film may ultimately prove too arty for Oscar, but if anyone can make it a hit, it’s Coppola.

Buzz: This is Coppola’s first directorial effort since 1997’s “The Rainmaker.” On his Web site, he compares his situation to his lead character’s, writing, “Like (the film’s) leading character, Dominic, I was tortured and stumped by my inability to complete an important work.” This is a smaller, more intimate film for Coppola, who always wanted to make films more like “The Conversation” and less like the epic “Godfather” films he is known for. This film may ultimately prove too arty for Oscar, but if anyone can make it a hit, it’s Coppola.

Columbia has set a February start date for the "Da Vinci Code" sequel "Angels & Demons," which assumes the film will have a shootable script.
According to Variety, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is huddling with producers Brian Grazer and John Calley, plus director Ron Howard to come up with a finished version of the Dan Brown adaptation before the WGA's current pact expires on Oct. 31.
Assuming that everything goes according to plan, "Angels & Demons" will shoot around Europe starting in February and hit theaters in December 2008.
That would put Howard on a tight leash next year getting both "Angels & Demons" and "Frost/Nixon" ready by the end of the year. The former "Happy Days" star finished shooting the adaptation of Peter Morgan's Tony-winning play just last week.
Although it was savaged by critics, "The Da Vinci Code" made made more than $750 million worldwide last summer.

Tom Cruise and Robert Redford weren’t the only ones biting their fingernails after the Iraq war talkfest “Lions for Lambs” tanked last weekend at the box office.
Several other Iraq-themed movies, from the Sundance Film Festival favorite “Grace Is Gone” (starring John Cusack) to Brian DePalma’s highly controversial “Redacted,” are opening within the next few weeks.
Fellow thesps Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts have got to be more than a little nervous, too, since their own Middle East conflict pic, “Charlie Wilson’s War,” opens late next month.
That film, directed by Mike Nichols and penned by “The West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin, is based on the true story of a freewheeling Texas congressman and his efforts to covertly arm Afghan mujahedeen during the early 1980s. (Nichols’ last overtly political outing, 1998’s “Primary Colors,” cost $65 million to produce but earned only $39 million at U.S. movie houses.)
We grabbed a quick peek at an early draft of Sorkin’s screenplay and, while it’s much more ring-a-ding-ding than “Lions for Lambs,” there remain several elements that mainstream audiences might find less than riveting, such as dialogue about nonbinding resolutions, references to the House subcommittee for defense appropriations, old “Gunga Dan” footage of then-“CBS Evening News” correspondent Dan Rather and a two-minute apologia of sorts for Rep. John P. Murtha’s murky mix-up with Abscam.
But, yay, at least Hanks styles his hair better than that “DaVinci Code” quasi-mullet.

Hollywood writers strike claims first film casualty
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In the first big-screen casualty of the Hollywood writers strike, Columbia Pictures said on Friday it had postponed production on "Angels & Demons," a prequel to its box-office hit "The Da Vinci Code" starring Tom Hanks.
The Sony Corp.-owned film distributor also said the planned release date for the Ron Howard-directed religious thriller, originally set to open during the 2008 holiday season, has been pushed back to 2009.
"With the strike nearing its third week, Columbia Pictures has postponed production of 'Angels & Demons'," the studio said in a statement, adding that the script by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldman needed further work.
Goldman, a member of the Writers Guild of America, is barred by the WGA's strike rules from editing or polishing scripts for the duration of the walkout.
In addition to his work on "Da Vinci Code," Goldman's writing credits include boxing drama "Cinderella Man" and "A Beautiful Mind," for which he won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay.
"While the filmmakers and the studio feel the screenplay is very strong, we do not believe it is the fully realized production draft required of this ambitious project," Columbia said. "At this time, there is no new start date, but we are setting a release date of May 15, 2009."
The Writers Guild went on strike against major film and TV studios on November 5 after negotiations on a new contract for its 12,000 members reached an impasse in a dispute over higher fees the union is seeking from Internet revenues.
The strike immediately threw the television industry into disarray, as work on numerous late-night talk shows and prime-time comedies and dramas ground to a halt.
"Angels & Demons" marks the first major Hollywood film set for release in 2008 to be delayed by the walkout.
Columbia said it did not expect the strike to affect any other film in its 2008 slate, which also includes the next James Bond film, a Will Smith action drama titled "Hancock" or the Adam Sandler comedy "You Don't mess with Zohan."

Former Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson and his ex-fiancee, Joanne Herring, won a second victory at Monday's L.A. premiere of "Charlie Wilson's War."
The ex-lovers - who supplied the mujahedeen with the guns they needed to chase the Russians out of Afghanistan - succeeded in detonating parts of the script that suggested Wilson and Herring had also seeded the events of 9/11.
Herring, played by Julia Roberts in the Mike Nichols film, tells us she "practically choked" when she read Aaron Sorkin's original screenplay. The movie ended with a shot of the Pentagon in flames, implying that Herring and Wilson (played by Tom Hanks) had abetted Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda crew.
"Can you ever predict a war?" she argues. "The shelf life of a Stinger missile is five years. There's no weapon we got them that can be used today."
Herring also didn't cotton to the way Sorkin had Roberts swearing, spouting evangelical screeds and engaging in martini-fueled romps with Hanks.
"I didn't like the cursing, the drinking, the blatant sex," says the 78-year-old thrice-married Houston socialite, philanthropist and former talk show host. "They turned me into a kooky, hypocritical tart."
After sharing the script with Wilson, she says, "We wept and wailed and gnashed our teeth." Then they brought in some legal muscle - Dick DeGuerin, the Houston attorney who represented Robert Durst, the deranged New York real estate heir who, as Herring notes, "killed his neighbor and chopped him in pieces. Dick got him off."
DeGuerin got the attention of Universal and the producers, who flew Wilson and Herring to meet the stars in Morocco, which was doubling as Afghanistan.
"Tom Hanks said to me, 'I've been in love with you for six months, give me a kiss!' I was delighted to. And Julia Roberts was so lovely.
"They still wouldn't let me on the set," she adds. "I said, 'What do you think I'm going to do - roll on the floor and foam at the mouth?'"
Assured that the script would be changed, Herring flew to the L.A. premiere with Houston pals, who included former Secretary of State James Baker. To everyone's great relief, she and Wilson liked what they saw on the screen.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood stars George Clooney, Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are urging the Screen Actors Guild to start talks for a new labor contract as soon as possible in order to avert a strike.
Two days after the Writers Guild of America ended a three-month strike, the Oscar-winning quartet placed ads in the Thursday editions of trade papers Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. The ads urged SAG leaders to commit to negotiating a deal quickly, Daily Variety reported.
SAG, whose militant leadership strongly supported the writers' strike, has not yet set talks in preparation for the June 30 expiration of its contract with the studios.
SAG's committee on wages and working conditions has been preparing for the talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the studios' bargaining arm.
Even though the writers walkout just ended, Hollywood is in the throes of a de facto strike because movie studios are reluctant to commit to projects if there is a risk they could be shut down by an actors' stoppage.
The last major SAG strike lasted for three months in 1980. In 2000, commercials actors struck for six months.
SAG national executive director Doug Allen said on Wednesday that the union, which represents about 120,000 actors, would begin talks "at a time that will most benefit our members."
But Clooney expressed concern last week that there was "a lot of strike fatigue" in Hollywood and claimed SAG officials would lose negotiating power the longer they waited to begin talks with movie and television producers.

Angie Harmon gushed about her daughters, Finley, 4, and Avery, 2, and said that manners are priority No. 1 in her house, telling PageSix.com, "I'm from the South, so — 'yes ma’am,' 'please' and 'thank you' — manners are very important."

The ongoing lawsuit was referred to mediation on Monday (14Apr08) and Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos set a court date for 20 January (09) just in case the trio's mediation battle fails.
