Johnny Depp is sporting an impressive set of gold teeth - because he forgot to have them removed when filming wrapped on his new film Pirates Of The Caribbean . The actor had the gold teeth added for his pirate role in the blockbuster movie, but he was so keen to get back to his home in Paris, France, when shooting finished, he dashed off without getting the choppers removed. He says, "I meant to have them taken off but I left Los Angeles immediately after I finished the film and I forgot to take them off. I'll have them taken off next week." He admits he wasn't too keen to return to a dentist - he had a painful root canal operation while he was filming the project.

JOHNNY Depp had a lot of explaining to do after he flew into Miami from Lima, Peru, recently. "The customs guys went straight for me and asked what I had in my bag," Depp told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I said, 'Piranhas.' " The quirky actor was carrying stuffed piranhas and a dead vampire bat to add to his extensive taxidermy collection. And then there was his vitamin powder. "It had exploded during the flight," Depp said. "He unzipped the bag and a poof of white powder came out. He thought he'd hit the mother lode."

'It was love at first sight," Johnny Depp says of that night in 1999 when he saw his girlfriend-to-be, Vanessa Paradis, out on the town in Paris.
"I was in the lobby of this restaurant and I just saw this back across the room," recalls the reformed ladies' man.
"Suddenly, the back turned and looked at me. And then the eyes that were attached to the back walked toward me and said, 'Hi. Do you remember me?'
"I said yes, but I didn't remember because we had actually met a number of years before. But this time, I was caught."

IF "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp's kids want to smoke pot when they're older, they can count on dad to score it for them. "Out on the street, you never know what you're getting," Depp (right) tells next month's GQ, explaining his plans to supply his two children by singer Vanessa Paradis with quality pot untainted by PCP. "Suddenly two days later you're beating yourself in the head with a tennis racquet, wearing a towel, quoting Poe. You don't want that for your kid." Depp calls pal River Phoenix's drug overdose, which he witnessed several years ago, "a nightmare you never recover from" and says his new family helped him jettison his former "dumb-ass," "self-centered [bleep]" persona. And Depp declares he now plans to make Paris his permanent home because the United States "mortifies" him with its "childish" "freedom fries" and "freedom toast." Considering the vagabond looks and smells that Depp - dubbed "Uncle Stinky" by his pals - has been sporting, we say "good riddance."]]>

JOHNNY DEPP FAMILY FACTS:
John Christopher Depp III was born June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky. His father, John C. Depp II, was an engineer. His mother, Betty Sue Wells, was a waitress.
The Depps can trace their ancestry back to a French immigrant named Peter Deppe. Deppe settled in America in 1735 and promptly dropped the “e” from his last name.
One of his early ancestors, William Depp, fought in the American Revolution. After his stint with the colonial militia, William moved his family to Barren County, Kentucky. The Depps have been in Kentucky ever since.
Depp can credit his acting career in part to Nicholas Cage. Depp’s first wife Lori was a friend of Cage’s and introduced the pair. Cage took a shine to Depp and suggested that he meet his agent. ]]>

Depp Disavows Anti-American 'Quotes'
STEPHEN M. SILVERMAN
people.com
Johnny Depp has denied inflammatory comments about the United States attributed to him in the German magazine Stern, saying they were taken out of context and that he was misquoted, Reuters reports.
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star was quoted in Stern this week as saying America was "like a dumb puppy" and a "broken toy," and that he would urge his French-based children to explore it and then "get out."
In an apology issued by his publicist, the Kentucky-born Depp said his comment was referring to America being a young, growing nation compared to Europe. He added that he and his family now live in the south of France because his wife, singer Vanessa Paradis, is French.
"I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it," Depp's statement reads. "It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful."
He went on to say, "My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent."

Star Online
HOLLYWOOD's newest box office king, Johnny Depp , 40, is different. Not just from other so-called heartthrobs, but from his own reputation.
Which is to say that the real Johnny Depp, once known as a hotel-trashing, wild child, is actually nice. And sensitive. And really funny. Those who know the Kentucky-born actor all agree.
"He was a laid back guy, not the aggressive type," actor Jsu Garcia, who played opposite Depp in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street -- Depp's first film role -- tells Star.
"While we were shooting Nightmare, Johnny was getting ready to test for another movie called Gotcha! One day in the dressing room, he handed me the Gotcha! script and said, 'I think this part is tailor made for you. You should try out for it.' So I auditioned for it and got the part.
"You have no idea how rare that is for one actor to do that for another," says Garcia. "That just tells you what a terrific guy Johnny is."
Says another source who knew Depp years ago, "Johnny once got a fan letter from woman whose child was dying of cancer. The child's last wish was to meet Johnny -- so he paid to fly the family to see him. He was like that."
But he's not just nice. He's also curiously eccentric. Depp -- who is friends with such offbeat characters as Marilyn Manson, Tim Burton and Iggy Pop -- has made a name for himself picking non-mainstream films like Cry-Baby, Ed Wood and Before Night Falls, in which he played a transvestite in a blonde wig .
Even his current roles are left of center. In Pirates of the Caribbean -- which has already raked in nearly $300 million! -- he's a batty, makeup wearing captain named Jack Sparrow. And in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, he plays a maverick CIA agent simply named Sands. Yet both are box office blockbusters.
The part-Native American actor (just look at those cheekbones!) is now living in France with actress/singer Vanessa Paradis , and their two children, daughter Lily-Rose, 4, and Jack, 1. But fatherhood hasn't changed his sense of humor. This is, after all, a man who changed a "Winona Forever" tatoo on his arm (for former girlfriend Winona Ryder ) to read "Wino Forever" after they split. Robert Rodriguez, the director of Mexico says he let Depp choose the goofy slogan T-shirts he wears in the film that say things like
"Yo Quiero Taco Bell" and "CIA: Cleavage Inspection Agency." "It was his idea and he brought his own stuff," says Rodriguez.
Adds Eva Mendes , his co-star in the film, "Everything I thought of him was true! Beautiful: check. Intelligent: check. Mysterious: check. What I didn't know is that he is so funny. . . I was like, 'Oh my God! You're funny, too!"

JOHNNY DEPP & VANESSA PARADIS: THEIR REAL LIFE REVEALED!
February 10, 2004
Star Online
The Oscar race is on! And Johnny Depp is up for the coveted best actor award for his eccentric comic turn as the character Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl . So is he toasting the town in Hollywood over his nomination? Nah. He'd rather spend time with his girlfriend of six years, French pop singer/model Vanessa Paradis, and their two children in France.
Though not married, Depp, 40, and Paradis, 31, now have two children -- Lily Rose, 4, and Jack John, who turns two in April -- and live in a $2 million Mediterranean mansion on the Cote d'Azur, as well as a smaller home in Paris. And Depp, who fell for France while filming 1999's The Ninth Gate , loves every inch of his new home country. "Paris is a great metropolis, a huge city, but when you get out into the small villages, the warmth of the people is incomparable," Depp has said. "Do I think I'll stay in France for the rest of my life? At the moment I do, honestly."
WHERE THEY GO OUT
Johnny first spotted Vanessa in 1998 at the posh Hotel Costes K, which is situated on Avenue Kleber, not far from the Champs-Elysee in Paris. The hotel is so exclusive that the front doors are flanked by two black-clad security personnel with walkie-talkies who intercept visitors. The famous can sometimes be seen darting through a secluded side entrance. "We would prefer that the public doesn't know about the famous people who come here," a hotel source said. "Otherwise, they might stop coming."
But Depp is much more down to earth, and anyone can sit at one of his tables at his Paris restaurant/ bar Man Ray, also located just off the Champs- Elysee. Depp still owns the infamous Viper Room in Hollywood, but finds himself in Paris far more often.
"We had Scorsese and Leo Di- Caprio here when Gangs of New York came out," an insider tells Star about Man Ray's A-list clientele. "Quentin Tarantino had his premiere party here for Kill Bill."
When at Man Ray, Johnny and Vanessa are commonly found draped around one of the two circular lounge tables that are topped with three stone Buddha heads. The menu includes one of Vanessa's faves, Chateaubriand steak with shitake mushrooms and wasabi sauce for $22.50, and Johnny's $18 Cuisse de Volaille en Brochette Laquee aux Epices et Figues (that's roasted chicken thighs in sweet dumplings, glazed with spices and figs).
After dinner, the couple will sometimes slip to nearby nightspots like the Buddha Bar, which is just down the road from Man Ray, about a mile away on the Rue d'Anglais.
WHERE THEY SHOP
A few steps past the Buddha Bar is the Rue du Faubourg St. Honore, the tony street where the palace of the French president and the city's most exclusive shops lie. Vanessa is a fan of the Chanel store, which is not surprising, seeing that she modeled in a series of Chanel ads in the '90s.
But big-name labels don't seem to be what keep this couple and their two children happiest.
"It's wonderful to get back to France and be living in a tiny village with nothing around," Depp said after moving abroad. "There is still the possibility to live the simple life. You can go to the market, walk about, buy fruits and vegetables -- the things they did 100 and 200 years ago."

Okay, so Johnny Depp didn't get the Oscar. He never expected to win the damn thing anyway. When interviewed two days before the ceremony, he still hadn't quite recovered from the shock of being nominated for playing a pirate--one modeled after a degenerate rock star and a cartoon skunk, no less.
Now, though, he's channeling a Beach Boy in Secret Window, a thriller about a successful writer whom a psychotic hillbilly accuses of plagiarism. For Depp, it's another left turn in a career of interesting choices. Next up, he plays Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Here, the 40-year-old dishes on his inspirations, favorite things about France and a certain, er, homage to one of his films.
Q: You always model your characters on famous people. Pirates of the Caribbean 's Captain Jack Sparrow was a mix of Keith Richards and Pepe Le Pew. Ed Wood: Charlie McCarthy and Ronald Reagan. Who inspired the layabout writer you play in Secret Window?
A: Brian Wilson. I remember hearing those famous stories, or maybe myths, about him in this very reclusive period where he didn't leave his house and had sand brought in to cover his living-room floor. Then he dropped the baby grand on top of that and wrote these great beach classics. That was the level of reclusiveness I was looking for.
Q: Did you ever plagiarize in school?
A: Never papers. You know what I used to do? It's horrible. When I was a little kid, and I guess all kids do it, I copied other people's test answers. It was a question of survival. You do what you've got to do. At least, that's what it felt like to me. I couldn't take another failing grade.
Q: Isn't it irresponsible to portray pirates as likable?
A: Well, how do we know they weren't? [Laughs.] Irresponsible? Hmmm...maybe. It might very well be. But who wouldn't want to take to the high seas and wave a sword? What a ball that would be. That's why I'd love to play [Jack Sparrow] again. It'd be purely for selfish reasons; he's such a fun guy.
Q: Did Keith Richards ever ask for royalties off your Pirates performance?
A: I ran into him in New York a couple of months after Pirates was released. He was great about it. We've known each other for a long time...he is a pirate. Apparently, he's even on the DVD. That's really sweet of him. And how cool is it that Keith Richards is on a Disney DVD? That's a coup in itself.

Q: Where's the best Mexican food in France?
A: You know what? It's at my house. Yeah. My girl's a good cook; she can make burritos, tacos, whatever you want. Otherwise, you can't find good Mexican food in France. No Mexican food and no doughnuts in Paris. Not that I'm a big doughnut fan. Anyway, there's other stuff there that's just as bad for you.

Q: Now that everybody--audiences, critics--likes you, do you like everybody?
A: I've always liked everybody. [Laughs.] I'm not sure everybody likes me. Everybody thinks that I don't live in the United States anymore, that I live in France, which is not true. I just happen to have a home in France, as well, because my kids are half French. And that interview where suddenly I'm anti-American? It was untrue. It blew over quick, but it was an ugly moment. You don't want people believing that stuff. If I had said it, I'd take full responsibility. But it wasn't what I meant.

Q: What's tastier, Mr. Wonka: Scrumdidilyumptious Bars or Everlasting Gobstoppers?
A: Scrumdidilyumptious Bars. But there's one even better, the Willy Wonka Scrunch Bar. They don't make it anymore. It was just unbelievable. If I have anything to do with it, the Scrunch Bar will be coming back--with my mug on it. Why not?
Q: Okay, we're talking two days before the Oscars, but this interview won't run until after the ceremony. Um...anybody else you wanna thank?
A: [Laughs.] God. Being nominated was such a surprise, such a shock . Nothing like that had ever happened to me before. Being nominated is plenty, actually. I'd just thank the people out there who have been with my up-and-down, weird-road, strange career and supported me and stuck with me all these years. I mean, they're my boss. That's what keeps me working.
Q: Quick--name your favorite painting in the Louvre.
A: Does it have to be the Louvre? Oh...there's too many. The painting I'm unbelievably fascinated with at the moment is Picasso's Guernica. I think it's in Madrid. In the Louvre...well, of course, the Mona Lisa . You look at it and go,"Yes. It's great, especially for its time." But when you read about it, the thing really starts to take shape and come alive. It still fascinates me.

Q: Did you ever seen the porn flick Edward Penishands?
A: I certainly did. I absolutely did. And there was a sequel as well--Edward Penishands 2 . I think it was either Tim [Burton] or John Waters who sent it to me. It might have been both. Tim and I were both quite proud they decided to do that. It was low budget and cheesy, but it was hilarious to watch. Those hands...they served him well.
