Did anyone else see this the other day at IMDB?
Australian singer Olivia Newton-John has broken her silence over the disappearance of long-term love Patrick McDermott two months ago, appealing for anyone with information to step forward. The Grease star, 56, is concerned about the whereabouts of her American partner of nine years, who was last seen on an overnight fishing expedition off California's San Pedro coastline between June 30 and July 1. On Sunday the California Coast Guard put out a statement about McDermott's disappearance, saying, "We haven't really determined what happened to Mr. McDermott and so we can't really say that he disappeared from that vessel." In a statement released Monday, Newton-John says, "I'm hopeful that my treasured friend is safe and well, and I'm grateful to the officials who are working so hard to find Patrick, whom I love very much. I ask anybody with information that could help to please, please come forward." The singer/actress' spokesmanGavin De Becker added the star was in "close and frequent contact" with McDermott's relatives and friends.
There's more info today on CNN.com.
He apparently filed for bankruptcy in March as he owed $31,000 to creditors. The Coast Guard is looking into all possibilities including that McDermott could have staged his own disappearnce. He has a 13 year old son from a previous marriage. He signed onto the boat as a passenger and was last seen in the galley eating. His personal belongings, including his wallet were still on the boat but no one ever saw him leave.
Hmm, kind of reminds me of that movie "Open Water".

Olivia grieves as evidence points to lover's suicide
By Matthew Benns and Peter Mitchell
August 28, 2005
The Sun-Herald
Olivia Newton-John's missing boyfriend appears to have committed
suicide. After weeks of interviews, US Coast Guard investigators have
not found one person who saw Patrick McDermott walk off the fishing
boat Freedom when it docked in San Pedro on July 1.
And The Sun-Herald has discovered Newton-John did call the police and
Coast Guard to raise the alarm - but not until almost three weeks after
her lover vanished.
"Nobody has positively identified Patrick McDermott walking off the
boat," said Coast Guard spokesman Nathan Henise.
McDermott's car was found in the marina car park and his bumbag and
tackle box were found in the boat with his wallet, driver's licence and
passport inside.
But suspicions that McDermott staged his own disappearance remain.
Frank Liversedge, manager of the 22nd Street landing, said fishermen on
board the Freedom told him they saw McDermott make it safely to land.
He believes the witnesses may have changed their stories when
questioned by authorities.
"What these guys tell me man to man and what they do when they get up
and swear to it, that's two different things," he said.
AdvertisementBut one of the 23 fishermen on board the Freedom, Tony
Mayo, added weight to the suicide theory. He said he spoke to McDermott
early in the trip, but when he looked for him later in the expedition
he could not find him on the boat.
The Coast Guard investigation continues and McDermott remains "a
missing person". Investigators have not concluded what happened to the
48-year-old.
Newton-John has hired Gavin de Becker, who saved her from a stalker in
1983, to find the truth. While he works she has locked herself away and
grieves in private.
Eyebrows were raised when it was revealed it was McDermott's ex-wife,
actor Yvette Nipar, not Newton-John, who first alerted Los Angeles
authorities on July 11 that McDermott was missing.
Nipar has been involved for more than a decade in a bitter child
custody battle with McDermott, whom she married in 1992, but divorced
just 14 months later.
Newton-John, often separated from McDermott because of her schedule,
was in Australia at the time of his disappearance and dealing with her
own tragedy - her goddaughter Jerusha McGrath had been seriously
injured in a car accident.
She had also met music producers to discuss the launch of daughter
Chloe Lattanzi's music career and promoted National Tree Day. She did
not call emergency services in Los Angeles for nearly three weeks.
The Coast Guard confirmed that an alarmed Newton-John first contacted
them on July 21 about McDermott.
Her first call was to Los Angeles police. "The LAPD told her the Coast
Guard was handling the matter," Henise said. "She then contacted us and
was interviewed."
The unusual nature of Newton-John's relationship with McDermott, with
extended periods apart, has prompted speculation that their
relationship was purely platonic.
But Phil Stone, sales manager for Newton-John's Koala Blue wines in
Australia, said: "As far as I am aware they were still very much
together."
Papers contained in a thick file at the San Fernando Valley court
building where Nipar and McDermott have fought their custody battle
include snippets showing how besotted McDermott was with Newton-John.
Nipar said that McDermott, on "scores of occasions", opted to spend
time with his girlfriend, rather than with son Chance during his
allotted custodial time.
"He claimed on several occasions that he could not care for Chance
because he needed to work on his taxes and needed to spend time with
his girlfriend," Nipar wrote in one document obtained by The
Sun-Herald.
The papers also revealed the heated and violent nature of their
dispute. It has been suggested that this, depression and money problems
- he filed for bankruptcy in 2000 - may have led him to contemplate
suicide.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, not sure about his one

Although I'm by no means stinking rich (unfortunately) $31,000 doesn't seem such a huge amount to owe that you'd kill yourself over

Mind you, if he was suffering from depression.....

My reaction was like yours, Outta Sight. I didn't that sum of money was that high to be filing for bankruptcy over. Get a job and work overtime to pay it off slowly ~ that's what the rest of us would do! The whole thing just sounds strange.

Newton-John 'had split up from her missing lover'
By John Hiscock in Los Angeles
The Telegraph
(Filed: 28/08/2005)
The mystery surrounding the disapperance of Olivia Newton-John's
partner deepened yesterday as it was revealed that his relationship
with the singer had petered out and that he was beset by financial
problems.
Investigators searching for Patrick McDermott, a Hollywood cameraman,
have unearthed his troubled past, including allegations of "abusive and
dysfunctional" behaviour. They were perplexed to discover that,
although he was bankrupt, in debt and being sued by his former wife for
child support, McDermott, 48, dropped out of a film industry union
earlier this year, forfeiting significant benefits, including pension,
medical and life insurance.
His disappearance from a boat while on an overnight fishing trip off
the California coast on June 30 has been widely reported because of his
relationship with Newton-John, who last week appealed for information
about his whereabouts. Investigations have only raised more questions
and failed to supply many answers.
Personal items, including McDermott's passport, wallet and driver's
licence were found on board and his car was in the marina car park.
However, he was not reported missing for 10 days and US coastguards
looking into his case say they have still have not heard from or spoken
to Newton-John.
Friends believe that the couple, who met in 1996 when the Australian
singer was filming a commercial, had drifted apart and had not spoken
to each other for several months.
Investigators are following up various theories but have uncovered no
hard evidence. "Did he fall overboard? Did he just walk off the boat
and disappear? Was it accidental, was it deliberate? Any number of
things could have happened from the time he got on the boat until the
boat returned to port," said coastguard officer Savannah Trotinksy. "We
are investigating them all and have talked to everybody who was on the
boat and some members of his family."
McDermott had been involved in an on-off romance with Newton-John, 56,
for nine years. He occasionally stayed at her Malibu home where she
lives with her daughter, Chloe, and sometimes she visited him at his
home in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.
But because of her touring commitments and the length of time she
spends in Australia, they were apart more than they were together and
friends say they had not seen each other since January. There is no
mention of him on her official website.
Newton-John's statement last week expressed hope that "her treasured
friend" was safe and well.
It was unlikely that she knew of his disappearance until her office was
contacted by McDermott's former wife, who was concerned that he had not
shown up for his access visit to their 13-year-old son, Chance.
Already distressed by a car accident in Sydney on July 4 which left her
god-daughter Jerusha McGrath in a coma, Newton-John has cancelled
scheduled appearances on the US television programmes Good Morning
America and The View on which she was to promote her new album. Instead
she has extended her stay in Australia. It is not yet known if a
concert tour planned for October will go ahead.
She has been staying at the Gaia health spa near her home in Byron Bay
in northern New South Wales and it was from there that she contacted a
private detective and security expert, Gavin De Becker, in Los Angeles.
He came to her aid 22 years ago when she was being stalked and now runs
a 100-employee company that "advises media and at-risk figures on the
assessment and management of situations that might escalate to
violence". Although he is ostensibly her spokesman on the McDermott
case, he has so far refused any comment.
Newton-John and McDermott hit it off immediately when they met.
He had been divorced for two years from Yvette Nipar, who had appeared
in a number of films and television shows and had regular roles in the
soap operas General Hospital and Days of Our Lives and the series
Robocop and 21 Jump Street. Their 18-month marriage produced their son,
whom he saw regularly and for whose support he paid £450 a month.
Friends say McDermott and Newton-John appeared very happy together. She
described him as "the most romantic person she had met".
Last year on the Australian version of the television show, This Is
Your Life, McDermott gushingly declared his love for her. With
Newton-John looking on from the stage, McDermott appeared on screen via
a video hook-up saying: "I love you... the whole world loves you...
I've known you for eight wonderful years and you are such a special
person and you can be so compassionate, forgiving, understanding and
gentle. You are the epitome of the word 'woman' ." As the studio
audience cheered and clapped, he blew her a kiss.
But if his love life was seemingly successful, his financial affairs
were a mess. His debts were mounting and in March 2000 he filed for
bankruptcy saying he owed nearly £17,000 to creditors ranging from a
do-it-yourself shop to a bank. He listed his 1995 Toyota 4Runner as his
most valuable asset, at £2,500. He estimated his total monthly income
at about £550 with monthly expenses of nearly £2,000.
In court documents filed in 2002, Nipar, 40, accused him of abusive and
dysfunctional behaviour, questioned his abilities as a parent and
claimed that he had anger-management issues. She said he encouraged
their son to play truant and lacked parenting skills.
Last April she took him to court claiming that he was behind with his
child support payments and he was ordered to pay the sum outstanding.
McDermott had previously taken Chance with him on overnight fishing
trips but on the evening of June 30, with demands from his landlord for
back rent piling up at his house, McDermott parked his car at the 22nd
Street Marina and Landing in San Pedro and boarded the vessel Freedom
alone. He paid the £60 fare with his credit card and joined 22 other
passengers on board.
Most of the crew has no recollection of him although Frank Liversedge,
the pier manager, says that during the overnight trip McDermott told
two people that he was having personal problems.
He was also seen eating in the galley when the boat was about four
miles from shore and records show that half an hour before it docked he
paid £7 for two hotdogs and a soft drink.
Several of the passengers said they saw him get off the boat at the end
of the trip, Mr Liversedge said.
"If the man went overboard, either intentionally or accidentally,
someone would have seen it," he said. "I know he got off the boat. I've
been here 45 years as a boat captain and vessel master and I've never
lost a fisherman yet."
When everybody had disembarked a crew member cleaning the bunk area and
galley discovered two fishing rods, a tackle box and a bag.
When Nipar phoned Mr Liversedge 10 days later he found McDermott's
wallet, car keys, licence and a passport in the bag. After they found
his car in the car park they called the coastguard. "That guy left his
wallet there on purpose," Mr Liversedge said.
Investigators are not so sure. "It's a really strange one," said
coastguard investigator Dennis Nebrich. "Each time you think you know
what's going on, it doesn't go that way."

Did ‘Livvy’ dump her missing man?
Looks like Olivia Newton John may have dumped her sweetie before he went missing.
Patrick McDermott, who had dated the Aussie singer for nine years, made headlines this summer when he disappeared during or after a fishing trip. Now, John’s nephew is claiming that the two split up several months ago because of his drinking. “Livvy saw it was not progressing. She knew he was drinking, she probably didn't want to deal with it,” Emerson Newton John told an Australian newspaper. He said McDermott was depressed for several months before he disappeared and was probably fell off the boat drunk, rather than killed himself or faked his death. “It doesn't take much to fall off a boat and drown,” Emerson said.
The operators of the boat said that no one is allowed to bring liquor on board and McDermott’s bill indicated that he didn’t order any.
When contacted by the Sydney Daily Telegraph Emerson — who apparently was paid for his revelation, refused to elaborate any further unless paid more — said, “I'm definitely not saying anything for free.”

Newton-John's Missing Boyfriend Spotted
Monday Jun 05, 2006 9:20am EST

Three separate witnesses in Mexico have spotted Olivia Newton-John's missing boyfriend, who was thought to have fallen overboard during a deep-sea fishing trip nearly a year ago, Australia's Daily Telegraph reports.
Patrick McDermott, 48, a cameraman whom Newton-John met in 1996, disappeared on June 30, 2005, while on an overnight fishing trip out of San Pedro, Calif. Subsequent news reports revealed that he had amassed a mountain of debts and faced possible jail time over thousands of dollars in child support he owed his ex-wife, actress Yvette Nipar.
But according to a story on Monday in the Daily Telegraph – which says that McDermott is now suspected of faking his death – he has been seen in Mexico's Baja Peninsula over the past three months, and as recently as 10 days ago.
Manuel Valdez, owner of a bar north of the Mexican resort town of Cabo San Lucas, tells the paper he saw McDermott three months ago and was struck by McDermott's mood, saying "it was one of those situations where you don't know if the person is on drugs or normally quiet."
Newton-John, 57, was at a health retreat she owns in Australia when she learned of McDermott's disappearance, and returned to the U.S. at the end of last July. In October she told the hosts of The View that her initial reaction to hearing about McDermott was utter shock. "I was just kind of frozen. … But you have to move on. I didn't think I was going to sing again, but I am singing again."
Newton-John and McDermott met a decade ago while filming a commercial, shortly after Newton-John divorced her husband of 11 years, Matt Lattanzi.
At the time that McDermott's disappearance became apparent, a spokesman for Newton-John told PEOPLE that the singer "is in close and frequent contact with his family and other friends, as well as with officials who are assisting in this matter."

OLIVIA'S HOPE

September 28, 2006 -- There is no way Olivia Newton-John's longtime beau faked his death, because "his son was everything to him," the heartbroken Aussie singer tells People magazine in the upcoming October 9th issue.
Speculation that Patrick McDermott staged his disappearance from a fishing boat in July 2005 to avoid mounting debts have been fueled by a string of alleged sightings.
"He just wouldn't do that," the "Grease" star says.

Olivia Newton-John Moves On
More than a year after her boyfriend vanished at sea, the singer releases an album of healing songs
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 28, 2006 12:55PM EST
By Sandra Marquez
On his last day before he disappeared at sea, Patrick McDermott was gardening in the backyard of the Malibu home he shared with his love of eight years, Olivia Newton-John.
Now, more than a year after he vanished – leaving his driver's license, wallet and car keys aboard the Freedom, an overnight charter fishing boat that departed Los Angeles on June 30, 2005 – a stone labyrinth stands in his place. Newton-John built the winding path as a private memorial where she can go to feel close to the man she says was "the most romantic person I've ever known."
"He loved this garden and there are a lot of things here that remind me of him," says Newton-John, 58, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. "So he is here."
It's a reflection of Newton-John's enduring positive spirit that despite the pain of the past 15 months she has emerged more hopeful and loving. This month she releases a new CD, Grace and Gratitude, which was inspired by her loss of McDermott, a cameraman she met on a commercial shoot.
McDermott won her heart on a special Valentine's day when he planned a "magical mystery tour" for the Australian singer. Leaving cards hidden as clues around Malibu, McDermott guided the Grease star to the beach where he waited for her in a tent with a bottle of champagne. "That's typical of the man he was," she says.
The songs on Grace and Gratitude, which use Eastern influences such as sacred Tibetan and Japanese chants, are unlike anything Newton-John has performed before. "It's been a difficult year and this music I've been creating has really been part of my healing," she says. "The whole CD is a spiritual type of journey."
The journey began in July 2005 when McDermott's ex-wife, Yvette Nipar, called Newton-John to tell her McDermott had gone missing. "I've been through cancer and divorce. Nothing compares to this," she says.
Long daily walks with her faithful companion, Jack, a 9-year-old Irish setter, allowed her to survive the pain, though she realized she could not get through it alone.
"I took antidepressants for six months. I had to," she says. But she is quick to add that the healing only really began when she stopped taking the medication. "Once you go off them you can deal with it better," she says. "It's important to go deeply into your emotions. You have to cry."
Adding to the pain: Newton-John and McDermott were going through a brief separation at the time of his disappearance, although the pair remained close.
"We were on a break. But we had been on breaks before and we got back together. It had only been for a short time," she says. "We had a wonderful relationship. He was so special and bright and loving and thoughtful and incredibly reliable as a father and boyfriend."
McDermott's disappearance, which remains unsolved by police, is also a mystery in her heart. "I don't really know what happened. That's probably the hardest – to live in the unknowingness," she says.
Harder still is that there have been episodic reports that McDermott is living in the Mexican town of Cabo San Lucas. Several newspapers claimed to have found eyewitnesses who said they had seen someone resembling McDermott, stirring speculation that he'd faked his own death to start a new life.
The rumors, says Newton-John, brought up a range of emotions, including "hope that maybe ... I don't know. It just stirs it up again. It creates that 'What if' again."
Deep down, however, the singer is convinced that McDermott didn't fake his death, if only because he would never subject his now 14-year-old son to such anguish. "He just wouldn't do that," she says. "His son was everything to him."
That feeling is echoed by the boy’s mother, McDermott’s ex-wife Yvette Nipar, 41, who has become close friends with Newton-John during the ordeal. "I can't imagine him leaving our son ever," says Nipar, an actress who was divorced from McDermott in 1998.
Newton-John says she hasn't spoken out until now because she didn't want to risk interfering with the investigation into McDermott's disappearance. "Obviously, if I thought it would have made a difference I would have," she says. "But we were doing what the police wanted. Just because I am a public figure doesn't mean it's not a really private thing."
But the music inspired by McDermott, and the joy it has brought Newton-John, are cause for ending her silence. "This one is really from my heart and spirit," she says of the album. "It gave me a lot of pleasure and peace to do it. It was a wonderful experience."
Her good friend, producer and songwriter Amy Sky, who collaborated on Grace and Gratitude, adds: "Olivia just pushed herself to sing from a really honest, emotive place. She tried to just get to the heart of her voice. And that's what you hear. It just gives you goose bumps."

Olivia Newton-John Sues Over Grease Royalties
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 06, 2006 08:10AM EST
By Stephen M. Silverman, People.com
Olivia Newton-John is suing Universal Music Group Inc. over royalties from the soundtrack to the 1978 movie Grease, in which she played the virginal Sandy opposite John Travolta's bad boy Danny.
Newton-John's attorney, John Mason, told the Associated Press that the company paid the Australian actress-singer, 58, some royalties, but failed to make other contractual payments.
The breach-of-contract suit filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court alleges that, per a recent audit, Universal owes more than $1 million to Newton-John's company, ON-J Productions, Ltd.
In a statement Tuesday, Universal said, "The lawsuit is without merit and, at the appropriate time, we expect that the court will dismiss it."
Newton's John's most recent album, September's Grace and Gratitude, came after the one-year anniversary of her boyfriend Patrick McDermott's disappearance at sea.
"It's been a difficult year and this music I've been creating has really been part of my healing," she told PEOPLE. "The whole CD is a spiritual type of journey."

RIDDLE: Olivia & McDermott weeks before 2005 disappearance
BOLTHOLE: Mexican hideaway From James Desborough, US Editor & Dylan Howard, 09/08/2009
GREASE star Olivia Newton-John's vanished ex-lover Pat McDermott - presumed dead since 2005 - has come out of hiding to beg investigators: LEAVE ME ALONE!
The bankrupt cameraman made headlines around the globe when he went missing on a fishing trip, leaving cancer survivor Olivia heartbroken after a nine-year romance.
McDermott was widely assumed to have fallen overboard and drowned. But investigators hired to solve the mystery have long suspected McDermott STAGED his death to escape debts and cash in on a life insurance scam.
Proof And now in a major breakthrough they have received a letter faxed on his behalf, insisting he is ALIVE, WELL, INNOCENT and begging: "Stop this search immediately!"
Singer Olivia, 60 - once romantically linked to Cliff Richard - found new love with herb tycoon John Easterling a year ago.
But the hunt for McDermott went on. And, as well as the fax, the probe team led by private eye Philip Klein have had three phone calls from his representatives since February.
After demanding further proof Texas-based Klein has now received a photograph of his 52-year-old quarry, with hair dyed black in a bid to change his appearance. Dramatic new evidence discovered by detectives and the US Coast Guard also reveals how McDermott PLANNED his disappearance for at least six months - clinching a second passport in his birth name Patrick Kim - and WITHDREW life savings from two bank accounts before vanishing.
The fax dated February 10 insists McDermott fled the California spotlight for a life with less hassle. It adds: "Pat asked that I portray to you his innocence in the crimes you have accused him of. Pat has committed no crime. . . Pat simply wishes to be left alone. . .
"Let him live his life in peace and harmony. He is safe and has started anew again in a new place both mentally and physically."
In fact the dectectives' dossier shows McDermott now works as a deckhand in the small Mexican fishing town of Sayulita - a magnet for surfers and drifters and those wishing to escape their past. When not on the move he stays at a £20-a-night beachside motel, always in the same room, No 10.
Investigator Klein believes the McDermott middleman - identified simply as 'Cacma D' - is "100 per cent credible".
He added: "This case is now 94 per cent solved. The remaining six per cent is to actually see McDermott sitting in front of my face."

He wasn't in Xanadu, that's for sure.
After mysteriously vanishing from a 2005 fishing trip off the California coast and presumed dead,
Olivia Newton-John's ex-paramour Patrick McDermott has been discovered alive and well and living in Mexico.A group of private eyes hired by Dateline NBC and led by Texas-based snoop Philip Klein were able to track down the Korean-American lighting technician after noticing a cluster of IP addresses from the Mexican-Pacific coast near Puerta Vallarta logging onto the website giving updates on McDermott's presumed whereabouts.
The investigators eventually cornered their quarry, who was living in Mexico under his birth name. After obtaining "documentation and voice imprints," from him they subsequently announced an end to the hunt last week.
"Mr. McDermott's wishes, according to his counsel, is not to be 'hounded' any longer by investigators or the media," Klein told reporters at a press conference.
He'll still have to answer to authorities, however. McDermott spent nine years with the "Hopelessly Devoted" singer starting in 1996, during which time he filed for bankruptcy owing more than $30,000 debt. The couple called it quits in 2005. Shortly afterward he disappeared after supposedly falling overboard from a chartered fishing boat.
While the Coast Guard believed he drowned and closed their investigation, speculation persisted that he may have staged his death to cash in on a $150,000 life insurance policy for his son.
Newton-John declined to comment on the matter but previously called the whole situation "heartbreaking."
