Patrick Dempsey is revved up, and presumably ready to hear Jim Nabors roar.
The Grey's Anatomy operator has moved up to the ranks of Indy car owners, putting him in the mix for the Indianapolis 500, the marquee racing event traditionally prefaced by Nabors' booming rendition of "Back Home in Indiana."
"I feel like a kid in a candy store," Dempsey said in a statement announcing his alliance with Vision Racing.
As a co-owner, TV's good Dr. Shepherd will watch his team's two drivers compete in as many as 14 Indy Racing League events this year. The season kicks off Mar. 26 with the Toyota Indy 300 in Miami. The 90th edition of the Indianapolis 500 is set for May 28.
Dempsey's competition at the Indy 500 should as starry as it is fast. IRL driver Dario Franchitti is the husband of Ashley Judd; the Letterman of Rahal Letterman Racing is late-night talk host David Letterman.
In 2004, Letterman, an Indianapolis native, won his hometown 500 on the strength of driver Buddy Rice's brickyard run.
If Dempsey were a car, he'd be more of a Paul Newman model than a Letterman one. Like Newman, a longtime owner in IRL's rival Champ Cars league, Dempsey is also a professional driver.
Last month, Dempsey cruised Daytona International Speedway in a souped-up Ford Mustang as befitting his status as a Grand-Am Cup Series helmet wearer and gas pedal pusher.
Dempsey, 40, also drives GT cars in the Panoz Racing Series (finishing third in one event last year), and has competed in the annual celebrity competition held in conjunction with the Grand Prix of Long Beach.
On TV, Dempsey and his Seattle Grace colleagues are zooming along in the ratings. Last Sunday, their show outdrew an all-new Desperate Housewives for the first time, taking honors as the night's most-watched show.
In the movies, the former teen flick fixture (Can't Buy Me Love, Loverboy) will be Hilary Swank's leading man in Freedom Writers, an inspirational teacher flick.

Patrick Dempsey Reveals Dyslexia
Wednesday Mar 01, 2006 8:00am EST
By Stephen M. Silverman

He may be nicknamed "Dr. McDreamy" by the female interns on his hit show Grey's Anatomy, but Patrick Dempsey's childhood was anything but enviable: He wasn't diagnosed as being dyslexic until he was 12 years old.
"I think it's made me who I am today," Dempsey, 40, reveals on The Barbara Walters Special that airs Wednesday night. "It's given me a perspective of – you have to keep working. I have never given up."
To this day, he says, he struggles while reading scripts and memorizing his lines as neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Shepherd on the hit ABC series. "I think that's when I get the most insecure ... it's very hard for me to read it off the page," the actor says. "I need to memorize it, in order to go on."
The Maine native also says he continues to deal with some of the emotional fallout from his first marriage, to his manager Rocky Parker, who was nearly 30 years his senior and the mother of his best friend, Corey Parker.
"Yeah, I think I needed a mother. There were a lot of negative things that I am still undoing from it, and will always have to remember," he says. For the past seven years he's been married to Jillian Fink, a hair stylist and makeup artist. They have a daughter, Tallulah.
Now in the throes of a comeback since he dropped off Hollywood's radar screen after starting to build a reputation in romantic comedies in the '80s (in such movies as Can't But Me Love), Dempsey admits that he was once guilty of diva-like behavior.
"You can't have temper tantrums," he now says. "You have to be professional, and I don't think I understood that at the time."

Doctor McDreamy Gets 'Enchanted'
"Amy Adams is playing this princess in a real fairy tale world. It starts out with eight minutes of animation, like a spoof on Disney, and she plays this princess, and James Marsden is the prince. They fall in love in one day, they sing a song where they find each other, and the birds sew her dress. Susan Sarandon is the queen and hates her, and she pushes her down a well so that she won’t marry her son. So, she falls in a well and ends up in a manhole in New York City. And then it’s a real life, New York City romantic comedy. She meets Patrick Dempsey who is a cool single dad with a little daughter, and he falls in love with her. I play his fiancée, who is a cool fashion designer, New York chick that is sort of jaded about love. And then the prince follows her down the well to find her, and they walk around in Renaissance clothing in the middle of New York City. I end up getting the glass slipper and the prince decides he doesn’t like the princess, he likes sassy me. And we go back to the animated world and we sing a song to each other, and I throw the Blackberry out at the wedding ceremony.” -- Idina Menzel

DR. MCDREAMY TURNS INTO NIGHTMARE
By RICK EGUSQUIZA and MICHAEL GLYNN
Dr. McDreamy is out of control! Grey's Anatomy hunk Patrick Dempsey recently flew into such a violent rage during the filming of a scene that he sent his onscreen wife running in tears — and he's even hinted he may be leaving the show!
According to show insiders, the 41-year-old actor became so irate while filming a flashback scene in which he reacts to the news that wife Dr. Addison Shepherd — played by 35-year-old Kate Walsh — cheated on him, he frightened the wits out of everyone on the set.
"Patrick did a Marlon Brando-style freakout during the particularly dramatic scene," said a source on the set. "No one, least of all Kate, was prepared for Patrick's violent, jealous rant.
"He got so carried away with his character that he went off script — grabbing Kate by the shoulders and throwing her against the wall, and then kicking in a glass door. The crew was so startled, cameras stopped rolling.
Kate was so unnerved by Patrick's over-the-top outburst that she burst into tears and ran off to her trailer."
Patrick's publicist says the scene was "very emotional," but denied there were any problems, saying it "went well."
The source also revealed that Patrick is so aware of how much he's contributed to the show's success and enormous female audience that he's intimated he may be leaving the show soon. "He's been dropping hints about moving on to new projects, spending more time with his family and his auto racing hobby," said the source. "The show's producers think it's all a ploy to get a bigger paycheck."
Just in case Patrick does decide to split, execs for the show plan to bolster the show's hunk appeal by increasing the number of episodes with Chris O'Donnell's veterinarian character and by beefing up the romantic story line of Dr. Mark Sloan (the plastic surgeon known as Dr. McSteamy), played by Eric Dane.
Said the source: "Patrick may be a big part of the show, but it's not his show."

'Anatomy' Studs Get McPunchy
Punctuality becomes an issue on set
"Grey's Anatomy" began with two surgeons vying for a promotion, and it appears that their has rivalry bled over to the real world.
Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington -- who play Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd and Dr. Preston Burke, respectively -- got into an argument that nearly became physical on set Monday (Oct. 9), report various news sources.
"We were like two baseball players . . . nose-to-nose," Washington tells People. "We had a difference of opinions while working on set but we've resolved it." They were reportedly arguing about "time and [keeping] the production going. The communication was lost in translation."
'Grey's Anatomy' Showcard
Luckily, the services of plastic surgeon McSteamy weren't needed since it didn't come to blows.
"Our faces are too beautiful for that," says Washington, who observed after a script read-through, "I've never been that close to [Patrick] before. He has really pretty blue eyes."
This happy picture is a lot more benign than the account reported the NY Daily News' Rush & Molloy and the National Enquirer. That story has Washington grousing about having to wait around on set and then saying "something mean" to actor T.R. Knight ( who plays intern George) when Dempsey came to his co-star's defense. Washington then allegedly grabbed Dempsey by the throat and shoved him a few feet.
The tabloid's unidentified source says that the scuffle was a long time in coming since Washington is supposedly jealous of Dempsey's "McDreamy" magazine cover status.
"There was an argument on set. In any close-knit family, sometimes people argue," says Dempsey's rep. "But everybody made up and went back to work."

"Grey's" Dempsey, Washington Get Physical
By Natalie Finn
Come Emmys season, does a series win extra points if its characters engage in some off-camera drama of their own?
Grey's Anatomy docs Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey--who's no stranger to the on-camera tussle--reportedly threw down Monday, resulting in a temporary halt in production while the two hunky attending physicians cooled off in separate corners.
A source told E! Online TV columnist Kristin Veitch that tensions mounted while the men-masquerading-as-boys were off on location last week shooting a camping sequence. By the time the crew returned to Los Angeles, something was apparently bothering the actors enough to cause a skirmish on the set.
It seems that Washington was prepared to shoot a particular scene Monday and was peeved that his fellow cast mates weren't ready to go. He ended up making a nasty remark to T.R. Knight and Dempsey stepped in on Knight's behalf.
According to the New York Daily News, Washington then grabbed Dempsey by his McDreamy throat and shoved him. Washington told People Wednesday that no punches were thrown.
Not confirming that two of the stars from its biggest hit were engaged in an altercation that turned physical--but not denying it either--ABC has remained mum on the subject.
But all is well now, on the surface at least, back at Seattle Grace. E! Online's source said that Washington and Dempsey both met with the big cheese, executive producer Shonda Rhimes, and proceeded to metaphorically hug it out.
"There was an argument on set," a rep for Dempsey said. "In any close-knit family, sometimes people argue. But everybody made up and went back to work."
Washington's publicist echoed the sentiment, saying in a statement to E! News: "Differences are inevitable. They were aired, resolved, and everyone has moved on."
With their bizarrely good looks intact, luckily.
And as for those outdoorsy scenes that the gentlemen were filming last week, Dempsey told E! Online Sunday (the day before the "incident") that it was good being away with the guys and nice to not have to shave for awhile.
"We have a good time together," the actor, whose wife is expecting the couple's second child, said. "We bonded a little bit, in a good way."

From the way Washington & his reps responded, sounds like the story about him grabbing Dempsey by the throat & shoving him is true. Maybe they had a little too much bonding time on their recent camping shoot? There must have been ALOT of down time with little to do. Isaiah isn't the first cast member the media has reported on about getting tired of waiting around on set. Last year they reported Katherine Heigl getting angry about all the down time. I can't say I blame them. I've never understood why the cast has to be on set yet sitting around doing nothing so much of the time. It was nice of Patrick Dempsey to come to T.R.'s defense!
BobbyD
Oct 12 2006, 10:53 AM
I'll take Isaiah.. in a second round knockout...LOL!
This is probably the classic case of an actor(Isaiah) who is all about the craft, pissed at the eye candy(Dempsey) on the show. Not excusing violence...T.R. should've brought his ass to work on time...like us, the little people!

Was McDreamy's first marriage a nightmare?
Patrick Dempsey's ex-wife seems to be backpedaling on statements she made about their marriage.

Did Dr. McDreamy have a nightmarish first marriage?
Patrick Dempsey’s first wife accused the “Grey’s Anatomy” star of beating her, according to court papers obtained by the National Enquirer.
Rochelle “Rocky” Parker claimed that Dempsey once broke her finger in a car door and further charged that “while we were on the set of his [1987] movie ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ he beat me up because he wanted to see what it was like to beat a woman,” the tab is reporting.
Dempsey and Parker married in 1987, when he was 21 and she was 47. She filed for divorce in 1991, citing “irreconcilable differences,” reportedly after he told her that he had met another woman.
Now, Parker is distancing herself from those accusations. After the Enquirer contacted Dempsey’s rep for comment, Parker released a statement saying that during the messy divorce she had been advised to make those accusations and others — which she now says are false.
Only days earlier, however, Parker reportedly discussed the alleged beating with the Enquirer, which quotes her as saying, “After [the alleged violence on the set of ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’] he never beat me up again” and also added that she had forgiven Dempsey because forgiveness is “the only thing that really heals us.”
Dempsey recently made headlines when he and “Grey’s Anatomy” co-star Isaiah Washington got into what has been described as an “on-set dustup.”

Dempsey Daunted by Twins Delivery
Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey is desperately trying to adjust to his new life now that he has welcomed twin boys with wife Jillian Fink. The couple have a five-year-old daughter, Talula, but Dempsey admits he needed to be reminded how to look after infants. Fink says, "I think sometimes he forgets that when babies are first born, they don't have any neck muscles and I'm like, 'Whoa! Baby head wobbling down to your feet!'" Despite all the medical knowledge his character Dr. Derek Shepherd has on the show, Dempsey says being in the operating room cutting the cords after the delivery "was a bit surreal." Twins Sullivan Patrick and Darby Galen were born on February 1 and Dempsey claims he's also had to learn a new procedure when it comes to diaper duty for boys. He adds, "That's a whole different technique!"
