STAR HOTELIER
Page Six
November 3, 2006 -- FORGET gerbils, the rodents featured in an unprintable urban myth of the '80s that involved Richard Gere. The actor is now into squirrels. Gere, who lives in ritzy Pound Ridge, N.Y., last week won approval to renovate an early 19th-century inn on 14 acres in neighboring Bedford that he and his business partners bought in January. Until 2000, it was a popular dining spot - first known as Nino's, then as Hoppfield's. Now Gere plans to restore the 125-seat restaurant, outfit the barn with a cafe for horseback riders on bridle paths, add a yoga studio and resurrect the hotel as a nine-roomer. The name for the development? Squirrelly Acres.

Table Hopper
RICHARD Gere will no doubt be honored to know that the most hidden and romantic table at the new Nirvana 54 restaurant on West 54th Street is named after him.
Why? When the original Nirvana was on Central Park South, Gere, a bachelor then, was a regular and he always requested the secluded table.
Owner Shamsher Wadud recalls that Gere would show up with two women and have a "romantic time." One week he was there at least five times, mostly with different women. "Richard would drink only champagne with the Indian food and always paid his tab in cash," says Wadud.

Crusading actor Richard Gere has flown to India to advise local prostitutes how to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS. The Hollywood star cheered on thousands of Indian sex workers dancing to raunchy Bollywood songs in Mumbai earlier today, before issuing his stark warning.
He chanted, " No gerbil , no sex. No gerbil, no sex. No gerbil, no sex." No wait. I read that wrong.
He actually chanted, “No condom, no sex. No condom, no sex. No condom, no sex.”
Gere also presented awards to sex workers in recognition of their work on various HIV/AIDS intervention programs. He said, “You’re unique. This is amazing, an unbelievable experience. This is unfathomable. This will not happen in the US or Europe, or even in Asia.”
According to United Nations figures, 5.7 million Indians are living with HIV/AIDS, the largest caseload in the world.

Gere and Dad Boost Meals on Wheels
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Richard Gere appears with his father, a longtime volunteer for the Meals on Wheels Association of America, in the organization's latest public service ads.
Father and son teamed up for a print ad and a television spot after the association learned that Homer Gere has been a meal delivery volunteer for almost 20 years.
The ad, headlined "My dad teaches me how to act every day," does not identify Richard Gere, 57, by name.
"We didn't want to make a big thing of that," Homer Gere told The Post-Standard of Syracuse, where he lives.
The print ad has so far appeared in issues of Prevention and Sports Illustrated.
Meals on Wheels officials said the actor was enthusiastic when approached about the daylong August shoot. They were working to get the full-page ad placed in other publications and hope the video will be picked up by broadcasters in the spring.

Shetty Defends Gere Kiss
Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has defended actor Richard Gere after his public show of affection sparked protests in India. The Chicago star swept the popular actress into his arms and kissed her several times during an AIDS-awareness event last weekend. The action has outraged Indians, who feel Gere went too far in a country where such public displays of affection are largely taboo. Angry crowds burned effigies of Gere during demonstrations last Monday after photographs of him embracing and kissing Shetty appeared on the front pages of India's leading national newspapers. But Shetty has defended Gere, saying, "What he did was very sweet. It was all in good humor. He especially told me to tell the media that he didn't want to hurt any Indian sensibilities." And she admits the actor has apologized "profusely" to her following the kiss.

Warrant Issued for Gere Following Shetty Kiss
Hollywood star Richard Gere is a wanted man - an Indian court has issued a warrant for his arrest following his recent public display of affection with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty. Gere and Shetty were speaking at an HIV/AIDS awareness event in New Delhi earlier this month, when the Chicago actor swept the beauty into his arms and kissed her several times. Public displays of affection are taboo in India and Gere's actions resulted in crowds burning effigies of the 57-year-old actor in Mumbai, Varanasi and New Delhi. New Delhi Judge Dinesh Gupta issued arrest warrants for both Gere and Shetty earlier Thursday after a citizen filed a complaint, accusing the couple of committing an "obscene act." Under Indian law, a conviction of public obscenity means a potential three months behind bars or a fine. Last week, Shetty defended the kiss and accused her critics of steering media attention from the real issue - of HIV and AIDS. She said, "I understand this is his culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such manner."

A Shet-Up
It seems that Richard Gere's creepy lip attack on Shilpa Shetty's horsey-face wasn't as impromptu as first thought. The pair got plenty of publicity for their condom initiative and Shilpa now has what appears to be a fledgling career beginning in the US.
Which is just as well, since her Bollywood career was as dead as disco, hence her appearance on 'Celebrity Big Racists'. Now, thanks to a few bigoted comments from three thick as pigshit harpies, Shilpa's career is healthier than ever. It must be karma. Or something.

Gere spared court over Shetty kiss
NEW DELHI, India (AP) -- India's Supreme Court temporarily suspended on Tuesday an arrest warrant for actor Richard Gere, who was wanted for allegedly breaking public obscenity laws by kissing Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty.
The court suspended all legal proceedings against the pair until it decides on the proper jurisdiction for the case.
Gere embraced and kissed Shetty on her cheek at a public AIDS awareness event in New Delhi last month, prompting Hindu hard-liners to allege the pair had offended the sensibilities of India's traditionally conservative culture.
The case has grabbed headlines, although the allegations have failed to stir any wider outrage among Indians, most of whom have responded with either mocking bemusement or utter indifference.
Gere, 57, apologized for any offense he may have caused. But he also said the whole controversy was manufactured by a small hard-line political party.
Gere, who left shortly after the kiss, is a frequent visitor to India, promoting health issues and the cause of Tibetan exiles. The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has his headquarters in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala.
Shetty, a well-known actress in India, became an international star after her appearance on the British reality show "Celebrity Big Brother."
A fellow contestant, Jade Goody, sparked international headlines by allegedly making racist comments to Shetty, 31. The comments sparked public outrage in Britain and India and Shetty went on to win the competition.

Richard Gere Wins Humanitarian Award
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Richard Gere, who has donated time and money to the causes for Tibetan independence and HIV/AIDS care, on Monday accepted a prestigious humanitarian award given by the city of Philadelphia.
The actor was given the Marian Anderson Award, named after the black American opera singer who achieved international acclaim by the mid-1930s but faced racial segregation at home.
Gere, 58, accepted the honor and its $100,000 honorarium at a gala at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
"I'm not worthy of this award in any way whatsoever," Gere said. "I can't tell you how this makes me feel. My heart is so wide open."
Gere was lauded for taking on the dual role of artist and activist before it became fashionable, lending his fame and finances to global issues.
Gere, a Buddhist, has advocated Tibetan independence from Chinese rule since 1978. He co-founded the Tibet House and is board chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet.
He established Healing the Divide, a public charity for improving care for HIV/AIDS patients, and a philanthropic foundation bearing his name helps humanitarian organizations.
His three-decade film career includes "An Officer and A Gentleman," "Pretty Woman" and "Chicago," which won him a Golden Globe.
Anderson became the first black person to perform at the White House in 1939 and the first black soloist at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1955. She received the Medal of Freedom in 1963 and died in 1993 at age 96.

India court suspends obscenity charges against Gere
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's Supreme Court suspended on Friday legal proceedings against Richard Gere, who faced obscenity charges for publicly kissing Bollyood star Shilpa Shetty last year.
Gere made headlines when he arched over and kissed Shilpa Shetty, winner of the British reality television show "Celebrity Big Brother," several times on the cheek at an anti-AIDS show in New Delhi.
Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan and Justice R. V. Raveendran stayed the arrest warrants against Gere and granted permission for him to travel to and from India.
The court criticized the complainant for his "moral policing" and observed, "such complaints are publicity hunting. You are bringing a bad name to this country."
Similar legal proceedings against Shetty were suspended last year.
A devout Buddhist, Gere is involved with charities dealing with AIDS and orphans in India and often visits the country.

Richard Gere Horrified By Bloody Himalayan Protests
Actor-turned-Tibet activist Richard Gere has slammed China for its recent bloody Himalayan protest - and has again urged the world to boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The outspoken Pretty Woman star was horrified at the treatment of demonstrators protesting against Chinese rule in Tibet on Friday - where at least 10 people were reported to have been killed.
Gere, chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet and a devout Buddhist, insists there "absolutely" should be a worldwide boycott of the sporting event in August to force China to allow the Himalayan region to decide its own future.
The 58-year-old star has been barred from visiting China for his support of Tibet, and in 1993 spoke out about the plight of the Himalayan region at the Academy Awards.
He says, "In this situation if the Chinese do not act in the proper way, change their ways, acknowledge what is going on, allow free access to communication, then I think that absolutely we have to boycott. It would be unconscionable if we continued as if things are hunky dory and everyone's happy. It's impossible. Tibetans have been much marginalised in recent years, much more than before. And that's why you see this pressure cooker effect in Tibet where religion has essentially been outlawed, where pictures of the Dalai Lama, who is essentially their Jesus Christ, are not allowed."

Gere cites "insane courage" in India kissing row
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Actor Richard Gere, who until recently faced Indian obscenity charges for publicly kissing a Bollywood star, called his troubles on Tuesday "a badge of courage."
Gere made headlines when he kissed Shilpa Shetty, winner of the British reality television show "Celebrity Big Brother," several times on the cheek at an anti-AIDS show in New Delhi last year.
"It's a badge of somewhat insane courage," he told Reuters during a visit to San Francisco on Tuesday, saying others had also been charged with similar offenses in the past. "It is a very complex society."
In March, India's Supreme Court suspended the legal proceedings and granted Gere permission to again travel to and from India.
Gere was visiting San Francisco to attend a pro-Tibet rally ahead of the running of the Olympic torch in the city on Wednesday.

I think the Olympic Committee should never have given the Olympics to China in the first place. Having said that, I also don't believe it's fair for countries to punish the athletes. Training for the games is a full-time mission. They get sponsors, work their tails off, and look forward to everything about the Olympics. I disagree with boycotting them. The Olympics shouldn't be about politics - at least not after a site has been chosen. China didn't just start their garbage, they've been this way all along. Now, if a venue is chosen down the line and it's a situation similar to this, then the countries that want to boycott should announce it when the announcement is made, not when the athletes are primed and pumped. To have that stripped out from under you is heartbreaking and it's not their fault.
I live near the Training Center in San Diego. I go to fundraising functions at the Center. These kids should not be punished no matter what. The issue is bigger than that. To say nothing when China was chosen, but to make this gesture that doesn't hurt the politicians (only the athletes) just plain sucks. IMO.
Off the soapbox...

Gere must mend fences in dispute
nydailynews
Monday, April 14th 2008, 4:00 AM
Richard Gere is finding out the hard way that there's just no pleasing his persnickety neighbors in Westchester.
The "Chicago" actor recently opened a new country inn in the tony town of Bedford, home to domestic diva Martha Stewart, designer Ralph Lauren and actress Glenn Close.
When neighbors complained that they didn't want to see the inn's parking lot, Gere had business partner Russell Hernandez put up a 180-foot-long, 5-foot-high cedar fence.
Citing town code, Bedford officials have now told Gere the fence is a foot too tall and they want it torn down.
"It's a lovely building, but the fence sticks out like a sore thumb," said Hazel Nourse, head of Bedford's zoning board.
Apparently realizing it's often useless to fight City Hall, Gere is ready to make amends.
"If they say you have to have a 4-foot fence, then that's what we'll do," Hernandez said.

NY suburb: Gere fence too high
Richard Gere, like Martha Stewart before him, is running into some zoning hurdles as he tries to put his imprint on the wealthy New York suburb of Bedford.
The 58-year-old actor and a partner have opened a cafe and bakery and have plans for a luxury inn and fine restaurant. But their new 180-foot-long cedar fence may not pass muster, building inspector Richard Megna said Monday.
Bedford's rules call for a fence no higher than 4 feet along the street side of a property, he said, and Gere's is 5 feet tall.
However, Gere's representatives have been trying to win a variance from the town zoning board by landscaping the fence to make it look better, Megna said.
No decision is likely before May 7, he said.
Bedford once turned down Stewart's plan for a barn on her property that would hold tractors, snowplows and a forklift because it was too close to the road.
(This version CORRECTS long overline with length of fence, 180, instead of 150. )

Richard Gere flies with 'Amelia'
Actor also set for 'Brooklyn's Finest'
By TATIANA SIEGEL
Richard Gere clearly intends to be one of the busiest leading men working in film.
Gere has signed on for a pair of projects: Avalon Pictures' Amelia Earhart biopic and Millennium Films' cop drama "Brooklyn's Finest."
In "Amelia," Gere will star opposite Hilary Swank. Pic chronicles the rocky relationship between the famed aviator and her husband, publisher George Putnam.
Mira Nair will direct from a Ron Bass screenplay.
Shooting starts later this month in Toronto, Nova Scotia and South Africa. Kevin Hyman, Ted Waitt and Lydia Dean Pilcher are producing. Swank and Bass are exec producing.
"Brooklyn's Finest" revolves around three unconnected Brooklyn cops who wind up at the same deadly location, despite vastly different career paths. One has gone undercover to crack drug gangs; another has engaged in graft and corruption; while another has played by the rules and put in his time on the force up until his retirement.
Antoine Fuqua will direct the film, which also stars Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke.
Michael Martin penned the screenplay. Basil Iwanyk and Mary Viola are producing.
Gere is currently shooting "Hachiko," which reteams him with helmer Lasse Halstrom ("The Hoax").

Richard Gere Disses “alien” Hip-hop Music
RICHARD Gere is not a fan of hip-hop music!
“It’s like an alien music to me,” said the Brooklyn’s Finest star.
So what does Gere have on his iPod? “It’s mostly old blues guys,” he revealed. “That’s where I’m coming from.
“Robert Johnson is on the top of my list and I’m sure 99 percent of the people on this planet don’t know who Robert Johnson is.
“My wife put on the random select on our sound systems, it was stuff coming out there that I hadn’t heard before. It was a lot of gospel stuff, like ’20s gospel ’30s gospel stuff.
“It had an unprocessed purity to it, that I think is hard to find these days.”
Gere, 60, then claimed that audiences have forgotten how “graphic” Pretty Woman was because it was a Walt Disney film.
“What people forget in Pretty Woman, not a day goes by that I don’t have someone come up to me and say, ‘My wife has seen it 85 times, my daughter has seen it’; that there is in fact a b**wjob in the beginning of Pretty Woman, which is a fairly graphic one, but you don’t remember this because it’s a Disney movie,” said Richard, who co-starred in the 1990 romantic comedy with Julia Roberts.

Richard Gere Has No Plans To Retire Any Time Soon
Hollywood actor Richard Gere said he is happy with his career but he has no plans to retire any time soon.
Gere, 60, has appeared in many movies over the years such as An Officer and a Gentleman, Pretty Woman and Chicago.
However, the actor said there are still projects he would like to work on in the future.
Gere said: 'When I look back through my career, I see that I've done all these different kinds of movies, which I like.
'But there's still quite a few that I haven't done, so maybe I'll get a shot at them before I die.
'It's the violent ones that I probably have no interest in whatsoever.
'Even a film like The Jackal - in which I was happy with my work - it had gone over the violent edge for me and I probably wouldn't do another movie like that again. It was too violent.'
