As Jessica’s new album hit stores on Tuesday, she cancelled a critical appearance on the “Today” show, as well as a Wednesday appearance with David Letterman. Her rep says she has a bruised vocal chord.
Ironically, just two days ago Mayer cancelled a Connecticut concert also due to throat problems, citing a case of laryngitis.
When contacted by Access Hollywood, a rep for Mayer said he did spend the summer in Los Angeles recording his album “Continuum” and rehearsing for his tour. But they would not comment on the personal lives of their client.
They confirmed Mayer had laryngitis over the weekend and had to cancel a Saturday concert.
Meanwhile, reps for Jessica also refused to comment on their client’s personal life, but they also confirmed she has had some vocal problems that has forced the cancellation of several New York appearances.
“It is true that she has indeed lost her voice,” Simpson’s publicist, Rob Shuter said Tuesday. “She’s been ordered to rest. ... She can talk, she can croak out a few sentences. She sounds a little off, but, you know, she can’t sing.”
But that still didn’t keep the singer from appearing on MTV’s “TRL” on Tuesday to promote her new album. While she introduced some videos in a hoarse voice and signed some autographs for fans, she did not sing.
Jessica is hoping her condition improves by Friday, when she is scheduled to perform on NBC’s “Today” show, Shuter said.
“She’s trying,” he said. “Everybody is hoping and keeping their fingers crossed.”

NEW YORK - Jessica Simpson is in love and today a lot of guys are wishing they were John Mayer.
He’s the new man in her life, but did her father play matchmaker?
We tried to ask Jess, but unfortunately she was giving everyone the silent treatment.
“I feel fine. I just got no voice so it makes me sad,” a croaky Jessica told Access Hollywood on Tuesday night at the Yahoo! roller skating party at the Roxy nightclub in New York to celebrate the release of her new album “A Public Affair.”
The paparazzi did all the screaming as the mini-dress clad Jessica posed for photos, signed autographs, and even held up a sign that said, “I lost my voice.”
“I have to go promote my record all week, so I’m going to try to rest as much as I can,” she told Access.
Inside the party, Jess didn’t let her lost voice slow her down as she boogied around the roller rink with hairstylist and friend Ken Paves.
Apparently that’s what pop stars call resting.
As for her new boyfriend, John Mayer, dad Joe Simpson was the one doing all the talking.
“I stay out of her romance,” Joe explained to Access. “It’s been a sad year and she’s been through some tough, tough times. As a father I wish joy for her.”
But will that joy come from Mayer?
The soulful pop singer — and notorious ladies man who was once linked to Jennifer Love Hewitt — is Jess’ new love shouts the cover of the new People magazine.
And People’s senior editor Julie Dam said the couple is trying to keep it on the down low.
“They’ve pretty much stayed at home. They barbecue. She started gardening, so he’s taken an interest in that and they stay home with Daisy the dog,” Julie said.
Jessica also hit MTV’s “TRL” on Tuesday, where she signed CDs and confirmed she would still be presenting at Thursday’s VMAs.
As far as whether Jess will still be singing on Friday’s “Today” show, papa Joe told Access that’s up to her doctor.
“If we’re healed enough to sing, we’ll sing. If not, we’ll push it to next week,” he added.

"She's head over heels," a source close to the pop star, 26, tells PEOPLE in its new cover story. "She's telling friends, 'I'm in love.' "
Indeed, Simpson, in New York City to promote her album, A Public Affair, and attend the MTV VMAs, showed her support Wednesday night when she and dad Joe slipped into Mayer's concert in Wantagh, NY, about halfway through his set. They nabbed seats with the sound crew and watched from stage left as Mayer sang his Grammy-winning hit "Daughters."
But he didn't fail to notice that his biggest fan was on hand. Ending his 75-minute performance with the single "Gravity," Mayer "turned to Jessica in the middle of (the song)," says an onlooker, "and smiled and sang to her."
Even her dad, Joe, is a fan of her new beau. "I love John Mayer," he told PEOPLE Tuesday at the New York City release party for Simpson's new album. "I love his music. I love his talent. The last time he was at the House of Blues in L.A., I went by myself to see him play."
The most important thing to Joe? "If my daughter's happy, then I'm happy," he says. "And if she finds love, then I'm in love with the fact that she finds happiness. It's been a tough year for her. A lot of disappointment. And my greatest joy as a father is to see my baby be happy."

“I needed to get rid of a lot of baggage,” she said, patting her new ’do.
“And you’re dating John Mayer?” O’Donnell immediately asked. “You don’t want to say, but maybe?”
“I love it that she just goes right there!” Jessica laughed. “I’m actually not dating John Mayer.”
“You mean, People magazine is wrong?!” Rosie said, feigning shock.
“I think the dating part maybe is wrong,” cohost Joy Behar cracked.
“They put in this quote saying that I’m in love!” Jessica said. “But he’s my friend. I’ve known him for a couple of years.”

O’Donnell rang in her first day “in the Meredith chair” announcing, “Like it or not, here I am!” before walking on stage, her arm linked through Barbara Walters’.
Poking fun at “the haircut that scared America,” that O’Donnell had a few years back, she promised, “It’s going to be long from now on and I’m taking my medicine, so everything’s fine.”
“You’re taking your medicine? Have you told your friend Tom Cruise yet?” Behar joked. (Cruise has spoken out about anti-depressants and prescription drugs.)
“He knows, he’s aware,” O’Donnell said, and then gestured to a nearby floral arrangement. “I don’t want to say who sent me these beautiful flowers sitting right in front of me. But it could be someone named Tom Cruise. He’s a very nice guy.”

In the new issue of Rolling Stone (on newstands later this week) John Mayer pontificates to writer Brian Hiatt on many things: weed; how everybody in the music biz is a pussy; Eric Clapton; buying “Playgirl,” but not being gay, and (duh) his new — and rather awesome — album, Continuum. Most important, the singer provides an illuminating set of rules for all the aspiring Mayer girlfriends out there, whoever they may be. In his own words:
1. “Be really careful with me on the phone. Distance makes the brain grow more maniacal.”
2. “Twenty-four-hour phone-sex assistance. If there’s a cute girl in the front row, I’m gonna run offstage and call you.”
3. “You have to run every single fantasy you’ve ever had through me. You’ll never cheat. You see a cute guy at the gym, I’ll be him. Or we’ll get him. I don’t care.”
Since rumor has it Mayer and Ms. Simpson are already over, we’re kinda wondering which tenet of the Tao of John she violated. Guesses?

Chad Franscoviak and I hit up a spot post-show in Portland, along with the likes of David Ryan Harris and J.J. Johnson. We had a total blast and then Chad and I retired to my room to talk about, among other things, zombies. Wait, what? You think we're what? Oh, girlfriend, it's so not like that!!!! OMG!!!! Here's a pic of the two of us in the elevator:
The hotel in Portland had an awesome snack machine. Big ups to whoever stocks that joint. Aero Bars??? YESSSS!!!!!

On a rare leisurely day at the venue in Portland, I decided to bring out the bear suit that was featured in "John Mayer Has A TV Show", a pointless and insipid 22 minutes that could have been better spent getting a closed MRI. Here's a shot of me rolling around in the grass while dozens of other hardworking crew members break their backs all day just to stage another show for my overprivileged self.

^^I knew I liked him. But I think he just admitted that even though he tries to pretend to be so not into the fame thing, he totally reads Perez Hilton.

If a secret hotel tryst is any indication, Jessica Simpson and John Mayer appear to be making sweet music together, despite past protestations to the contrary. TMZ spies spotted Simpson and Mayer at the tony Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills last week. There's been considerable buzz about the story, and several reports suggested that it couldn't be so. Now, other sources have come forward saying that TMZ is right on the money.
Here's how it went down: Mayer was the first to arrive at the hotel's bar, and he actually chatted up one of our spies and asked her upstairs to "talk." She declined. Not long after, Jessica arrived and made a beeline for her friend and musical collaborator Romeo Antonio, who was sitting at a table. When Antonio subsequently hit the boys' room, Mayer was there and asked if any romance existed between Antonio and Jessica. Apprised that there was not, Mayer then returned to the bar, talked to Simpson for about ten minutes, and then the two left the bar together and disappeared into an elevator. They were never seen again -- that night, at least.

John Mayer feels secure about his music career – but maybe a little less so about his age and his comedy skills.
Responding to questions from a contestant on the reality show I'm From Rolling Stone, Mayer jokes that turning 30 this coming October will be rough.
"There are lots of very invasive tests that doctors like to administer to men in their 30s," he says. "These tests usually result in a ride home with the radio off and very little blinking."
The wisecracking singer has also been working on his career as a standup comedian, and has performed several times at New York's Comedy Cellar.
Asked to describe the first set where he bombed, Mayer replies, "You mean 'set' as in just one? I'm not done bombing. I'm still clearing out a life's worth of 'Is that funny?' To which the answer is usually 'at least not the way you said it, it's not.' "
Mayer broaches the subject of his relationship with Jessica Simpson obliquely. When asked if he has "ever purchased a Jessica Simpson album," Mayer replies: "I listen to most new music released every week."
Mayer and Simpson spent time together in Miami this week. They have been linked on and off since the summer.
In terms of his music career, Mayer says he's in a groove – fans "come and go" he says, and he's "okay with that." But don't expect him to open up about his celebrity in a song anytime soon.
"I refuse to ever write a song about ANY trappings of fame," he says. "That's like your head crowing inside your ass, only set to music. Lots of people think "Vultures" is about fame and the entertainment industry, but it's not. It's more about where my confidence comes from."

Two John Mayers took the stage at Madison Square Garden last night: the thoughtful singer-songwriter who pens pensive odes to philosophy and love, and the ambitious guitar hero who spins solos of sensuality and fire.
Mayer has worked hard, and cannily, to entwine these two characters in his career, stressing each at different times to broaden his palate - and his audience.
Last night, Mayer struck a savvy balance, spicing those songs that have made him a radio star with plenty of hints of his budding role as a guitar god.
Mayer never let a solo tarry for more than a teasing break, but he packed each with skill and feeling. In "Good Love Is on the Way" Mayer worked a terse wah-wah solo around the song's main, snaking riff.
In the blues standard "I Don't Need No Doctor" he bounced a bright lead off a chunky shuffle of a beat.
Mayer also used two other lead guitar players in his backing band to give the music a firmer spine.
At other times, the singer turned more intimate, offering lithe, solo acoustic numbers like "Stop This Train" and "Your Body Is a Wonderland," all without losing momentum.
Such a push and pull has clearly paid off in the changing demographic of Mayer's live audience. The last time he played the Garden, women dominated. This time, they made up just half the house.
Initially, women were drawn to Mayer's chivalrous lyrics, though they can lapse into corniness (see the aforementioned "Wonderland"). But live, his lyrics took a backseat to the surge of the music.
Whether in delicately detailed ballads or hard-stomping blues, last night's music wove the two John Mayers into a seamless whole.

Are we crazy or are Jessica Simpson and John Mayer starting to look alike? Jess has darkened her hair and it looks like she dragged him to her tanning salon at least once. This guy gives me the damn heebie-jeebies. Joe Simpson says that he approves of his daughter Jessica's boyfriend John Mayer. Yeah he approves of him because John Mayer's a gay and he knows that he's not actually tapping that. Which leaves room for him someday! I think Jessica has been able to hold him off until now but if the right project came along that Jessica wanted to do - ugh, he would have the leverage. He's so incesty.

Jessica and John appear to have officially called it quits despite the fact that they're in contact "six times a day". Way to make it a clean break. According to the source, the pair are in constant contact - even as Simpson promotes her new film Major Movie Star at the Cannes Film Festival in France. "They talk to each other at least six times a day. I don't know if this breakup is permanent, but for right now they are broken up."
Another source who knows the couple confirms to PEOPLE that pair have split. "She's kind and sweet and he's a terrific guy, but it's safe to say it has run its course."

John - who split with Jessica last Monday, insiders say, because he needed more space - was seen exiting Jessica's hotel, the Soho Grand in New York, at 12 p.m. today. "He was looking really happy," an eyewitness tells In Touch. "He couldn't stop smiling."
A pal of Jessica's confirms, "They definitely went on a date last night," but cautions that the once-divorced star isn't ready to get back together with John immediately. "She still loves him, but he's not stable," the friend explains. "He's scared of commitment. He breaks up with her and then regrets it and then begs her to get back together."

"It has been rocky and it had been rocky, and it reached the end of the road," a source close to Mayer tells PEOPLE. "It is definitely over – the relationship has ended."
Those on Simpson's side confirm that the romance has come to an end, but say the door is always open for the pair to reunite.
"They broke up Sunday night, but who knows what the future will hold," says a Simpson source. "This is the twelfth time they've broken up. Their relationship is volatile. Last week they felt better than ever. This week, things are rocky. Who knows what the future will bring. "

John Mayer has posted a new blog post on his official site Thursday titled "From the Heart."
"I've been traveling alone in Japan for the better part of three weeks now, and It's been so remarkable an experience for me that I can't book a ticket home yet," he begins.
"What I'm about to write isn't about fame or success or celebrity or the media," he says. "That's my business. This is about us all. This is about a level of self consciousness so high in my generation, that it's actually toxic."
Mayer continues:
This is about the girl in her bedroom who poses in front of the camera she's awkwardly holding in her outstretched hand. She'll take a hundred photos until coming up with one she's happy with, which inevitably looks nothing like her, and after she's done poring over images of herself, will post one on her myspace page and then write something like " I don't give a f*ck what you think about me. "
This is about the person trying out for American Idol, who while going off about how confident they are that they were born ready to sing in front of the world, are trembling so badly they can hardly breathe.
This is about me, the guy who walks through a throng of photographers into a restaurant like he's Paul Newman, but who leaves a "reject" pile of clothes in his closet so high that his cleaning lady can't figure out how one man can step into so many pairs of pants in a week.
This is about a young guy who maintains a celebrity blog that subsists on tearing other people down but who has wrestled with a lifelong battle for acceptance as a gay man.
This is about us all. Every one of us. Who all seem to know deep down that it's incredibly hard to be alive and interact with the world around us but will try and cover it up at any cost. For as badass and unaffected as we try to come off, we're all just one sentence away from being brought to the edge of tears, if only it was worded right. And I don't want to act immune to that anymore. I took the biggest detour from myself over the past year, since I decided that I wasn't going to care about what people thought about me. I got to the point where I had so much padding on that, sure, I couldn't feel the negativity, but that's because I couldn't feel much of anything. And I think I'm done with that.
I'm not the first person to admit we're all self conscious, Kanye was. But what I want to do is to shed a little light on why we're all in the same boat, no matter the shape of the life we lead: because every one of us were told since birth that we were special. We were spoken to by name through a television. We were promised we could be anything that we wanted to be, if only we believed it and then, faster than we saw coming, we were set loose into the world to shake hands with the millions of other people who were told the exact same thing.
And really? Really? It turns out we're just not all that special, when you break it down. Beautifully unspectacular, actually. And that truth is going to catch up with us whether we want to run from it or not. The paparazzo following me to the gym ain't gonna be Herb Ritts and the guy he's following ain't gonna be Bob Dylan. It's just a matter of how old you are once you embrace that fact. And for me, 30 sounds about right.
What now, then? I can only really say for myself: Enjoy who I am, the talents and the liabilities. Stop acting careless. In fact, care more. Be vulnerable but stay away from where it hurts. Read. See more shows. Of any kind. Rock shows, art shows, boat shows. Create more art. Wear hoodies to dinner. Carry a notebook and hand it to people when they passionately recommend something and ask them to write it down for me.
Root for others.
Give more and expect the same in return, but over time.
Act nervous when I'm nervous, puzzled when I don't know what the hell to do, and smile when it all goes my way. And never in any other order than that.
And when it's all over, whether at the end of this fabulous career or of this life, which I hope takes place at the same time, I should look back and say that I had it good and I made the most of it while I was able. And so should you.

But what I want to do is to shed a little light on why we're all in the same boat, no matter the shape of the life we lead: because every one of us were told since birth that we were special. We were spoken to by name through a television. We were promised we could be anything that we wanted to be, if only we believed it and then, faster than we saw coming, we were set loose into the world to shake hands with the millions of other people who were told the exact same thing.
And really? Really? It turns out we're just not all that special, when you break it down. Beautifully unspectacular, actually. And that truth is going to catch up with us whether we want to run from it or not. The paparazzo following me to the gym ain't gonna be Herb Ritts and the guy he's following ain't gonna be Bob Dylan. It's just a matter of how old you are once you embrace that fact. And for me, 30 sounds about right.
What now, then? I can only really say for myself: Enjoy who I am, the talents and the liabilities. Stop acting careless. In fact, care more. Be vulnerable but stay away from where it hurts. Read. See more shows. Of any kind. Rock shows, art shows, boat shows. Create more art. Wear hoodies to dinner. Carry a notebook and hand it to people when they passionately recommend something and ask them to write it down for me.
Root for others.
Give more and expect the same in return, but over time.
Act nervous when I'm nervous, puzzled when I don't know what the hell to do, and smile when it all goes my way. And never in any other order than that.
And when it's all over, whether at the end of this fabulous career or of this life, which I hope takes place at the same time, I should look back and say that I had it good and I made the most of it while I was able. And so should you.
I'm going quiet now.

"I was happy to accommodate them," says Charles Bell, general manager of Michael's Genuine Food & Drink in the Miami Design District, which opened its doors for the pair early at 3:30 p.m. for the 90-minute meal.
Sitting across from each other in a booth, their heads were close together, and they were engaged in a private conversation, says Bell.
"I can't speculate on what kind of meeting it was but they looked happy and seemed to have a great time," he says.
Aniston, in Miami shooting the movie Marley & Me with Owen Wilson, ordered a chopped chicken salad, while Mayer had a Serrano ham sandwich which "Jen ate some of," says Bell. For dessert, they shared a chocolate-and-peanut-butter layered treat.

And the group had no problems going straight to Mayer, who once dated Jessica Simpson - the sister of Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz’s fiancee, Ashlee Simpson - to provide a little extra star power.
Wentz says, "Back in the day, Eddie Van Halen played on (Michael Jackson’s) Beat It… and we were trying to think about who is a contemporary guitar guy who’s going to go down as a legend.
"To be honest with you, there aren’t as many high-profile young ones. And John really is… a prolific guitarist. So I hit him up and asked if he’d want to do it, and he said, ‘Yeah.’
"He emailed me five minutes later and was like, ‘You wanna hear it?’ It was that quick."
