Rihanna Helps N.Y.C Mom Find Bone Marrow Donor

It's been a busy week for Rihanna, but when the Grammy-winning singer learned about a leukemia-stricken New York City mom of two who desperately needs a marrow transplant, she immediately stepped forward to help.

"When I heard about Lisa [Gershowitz Flynn]'s plight, my heart broke," Rihanna tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I said, ‘I need to get the word out about Lisa right away.' "

Besides scooping up her first Grammy and performing at the Brit Awards, the sultry 20-year-old singer returned to her native Barbados, where she has been named an honorary cultural ambassador.

Specifically, Rihanna is working with DKMS – the world's largest non-profit marrow donor center to help raise awareness for the need for people to come forward to become donors.

"I think DKMS is an incredible charity because you can really see the results," says Rihanna, who performed at the DKMS Linked Against Leukemia gala last May for free.

She adds: "My own charity, Believe, works specifically with children in need [and with children with leukemia]. Children need their mothers more than anything else in the world. Lisa has two children. My charity will continue to work with DKMS, because in finding a way to save Lisa's life, we will in turn be saving her children's lives."

Flynn, 41, is blown away that Rihanna is taking time to try to find a donor match for her and countless others who may die if they don't get one.

"For Rihanna to even be thinking about helping others and putting herself out there when she is so busy with her career is tremendous," says Flynn, the mother of Michael, 5, and Alexandra, 3, who learned she has an aggressive form of cancer called Acute Myelogenous Leukemia the day after Thanksgiving. Doctors told her she has four to six weeks to find a life-saving donor match.


Saving Lives
"Only two out of ten patients go into transplant, which means we need many, many more donors ... If we can find a match for Lisa, she can be saved. This is her only chance," says Katharina Harf, whose dad, Peter started DKMS in Germany in 1990 when he was desperately trying to find a donor for his wife and her mother, Mechtild, who was diagnosed with acute leukemia.

For Flynn, Jews of European (Ashkenazi) descent are the best candidates for a match. But anyone from 18 to 55 years old can be tested as a match for Flynn or thousands of others in need.

Getting tested is easy. Test results from a cheek swab are sent to a national bone-marrow registry. If the marrow is a match, donors undergo a minor outpatient surgery – to extract healthy stem cells to replace the patient's unhealthy cells.

Woman Rihanna helped finds donor

NEW YORK - A leukemia patient in dire need of a bone marrow transplant has found a donor after Grammy Award-winning singer Rihanna publicized her case, People magazine reported.

"The English language does not have words that are adequate to thank someone for working to save your life," Lisa Gershowitz Flynn, of New York City, wrote in an e-mail to supporters Thursday, People.com reported.

Flynn, a 41-year-old lawyer and mother of two small children, was diagnosed in November 2007 with acute myelogenous leukemia, a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. People.com said last month that doctors had told Flynn she needed to find a marrow donor within four to six weeks.

Rihanna had done previous work with DKMS, an international donor network based in Tubingen, Germany. "When I heard about Lisa's plight, my heart broke," the 20-year-old singer told the magazine last month.

Rihanna's campaign to help Flynn sparked more than 5,000 calls and e-mails to DKMS, and about 2,000 new donors have registered, executive vice president Katharina Harf said.

It wasn't clear how or when Flynn's 32-year-old donor registered with the organization. Flynn has said she was touched by Rihanna's efforts.

Rihanna, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, and Jay-Z won a Grammy last month in the rap/sung collaboration category, for her hit "Umbrella." She was recently named an honorary cultural ambassador for her native Barbados.

Rihanna and Chris Brown have further fueled rumors they are dating - after they were photographed leaving a London hotel. Earlier this week, Brown dismissed reports he is dating the "Umbrella," star, insisting he is "definitely single." However, Brown, 18, and the 20-year-old Bajan beauty were spotted leaving a London hotel on Saturday morning, before making their way to nightspot Maya. Onlookers say they left the club together at 3 a.m. Last month, the couple were snapped frolicking in a swimming pool while on vacation in Jamaica.

R&B pop singing sensation Rihanna opened up to “Extra” about her future in fashion design and acting, details about her new single and the secret to maintaining her killer curves.

Conquering the music world is just the beginning for Rihanna, she admitted, “Designing my own fashion line is definitely on my agenda…[And] movies and acting is another thing I want to get into.”

In the meantime, her new single, Take a Bow, is topping the charts. She said, “It’s doing incredibly well already.” Rihanna continued, “We’re about to shoot a video for it. "I didn't know!" Rihanna told PEOPLE at the Escada Moon Sparkle/Island Def Jam benefit for her Believe Foundation and DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center. "No one knew!"

(Although the wedding has not been officially confirmed, sources tell PEOPLE the ceremony did take place April 4 and Knowles has been spotted wearing a huge ring.)

Rihanna Honoured To Work With Maroon 5

R&B star RIHANNA was overjoyed when MAROON 5 approached her to lend her vocals to their track IF I NEVER SEE YOUR FACE AGAIN, because she is a huge fan of the pop band.

The Umbrella hitmaker has just finished filming a video for the new version of the song - which originally featured on Maroon 5’s 2007 album It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.

And she admits the duet was a big deal for her.

She tells MTV.com, "I always wanted to work with Maroon 5. They’re one of my favourite bands. When they called me to do this record with them, I was so honoured."

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine insists the collaboration worked well because there was instant chemistry between the two artists.

He adds, "The song was basically done, but we wanted to try something different, so we had her come in and do bits and pieces.

"It came together so quick. The only other collaboration I had done before was with Kanye (West), and it was the same way. It sounds cheesy, but if the magic is there, if the chemistry is there, you don’t even have to think about it."

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Chris Brown is being investigated by the LAPD in an alleged assault on a female.

Update: Chris Brown is under investigation for alleged domestic violence felony battery, the LAPD confirms to PEOPLE.

"The identity of the victim will not be released," said Officer April Harding. "Any victim who's involved in a domestic violence incident is entitled to confidentiality."

Around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, the R&B singer and a woman were in a vehicle in L.A. when they became involved in an argument, according to a police statement. After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated. The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker, according to police.

The LAPD received a 911 call reporting the disturbance. "If police locate Brown, yes, he's subject to arrest," Officer Harding added.

When officers arrived they found the victim, but Brown had already left the scene, the statement reads.

The LAPD is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Earlier Saturday night Brown and girlfriend Rihanna were at the Recording Academy and Clive Davis's Pre-Grammy Gala in Beverly Hills.

When asked about Rihanna's well being, her rep told PEOPLE, "Rihanna is well. Thank you for concern and support."

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles police say they're investigating an alleged domestic violence felony battery report involving Chris Brown.

The police department says in a release the 19-year-old R&B singer and a woman were in a vehicle in the Hancock Park neighborhood early Sunday when they began arguing. Police say Brown and the woman got out of the car and the argument escalated.

Police say the woman identified Brown as her attacker. Officers say Brown wasn't at the scene. A message left for Brown's representative seeking comment wasn't immediately returned.

Meanwhile, Entertainment Tonight has confirmed that Brown's girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna was involved in a car accident this morning and will not be performing at tonight's 51st Annual Grammy Awards.

A Grammy representative told ET that the singer's face is slightly bruised from the accident and no announcement has been made as to who will be taking her place on stage.

On Saturday night, both Brown and Rihanna attended the Recording Academy and Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party in Beverly Hills.

Not a very good cover story Police officers at the scene have been blabbing that it was Rihanna who was the victim and reports from Cedars are that she has been admitted for facial lacerations, bruises and a possible fractured jaw. Hope they catch the little shit soon.

TMZ has confirmed Rihanna is the named alleged victim in the Chris Brown case and the allegation is that she was assaulted with a deadly weapon.

Law enforcement sources tell us the crime report calls the incident assault with a deadly weapon -- we do not yet know the nature of the weapon.

I am a guidance counselor in a highschool and you would be shocked at the number of young girls that are abused by their boyfriends. Girls that do not fit any profile. It has nothing to do with race. I work in an affulent city/town, where the homes are worth millions, parents provide a comfortable lifestyle, there is even a few celebrities in town (not big names) and guess what it happens. I work with teens too and I know there is a lot of abuse in dating relationships...I MENT they are both so young to have such fame and attention at a young age. To have the fame and the money at 20 is a lot to handle but regardless it was wrong and I hope he pays for it with jail or at least anger management therapy and probation and it doesn't get swept under the rug like a lot of things in LA with celebs. They seem to overlook a lot of things out there in the land of the fruits and nuts. They pay a fine and get on with their merry lives. Lets hope this time they do the right thing legally.

Law enforcement sources tell us even though the police report in the Chris Brown arrest refers to assault with a deadly weapon, there was no weapon involved in the alleged attack.

The police report cites Penal Code Section 245 -- Assault with a Deadly Weapon. However, we're told there was no weapon involved.

We had been hearing there was an umbrella in the car -- which would have been the most ironic thing ever -- but again... no weapon is alleged. By the way, a persons foot or other body part can be considered a deadly weapon depending on the circumstances.

One law enforcement source who has been dead-on so far claims Rihanna suffered contusions and bite marks.

Instead, the normally affectionate twosome were embroiled in a domestic violence drama that left Brown, 19, booked on felony criminal threats charges and posting $50,000 bail after turning himself in to the LAPD on Sunday at 6:34 p.m. PST.

Sources say that Rihanna (real name: Robin Fenty), 20, was the victim in the alleged assault which occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Responding to a 911 call about a disturbance, the LAPD took statements from a female with visible injuries, who named Brown as her attacker.

Just hours after the incident, witnesses spotted Brown and Rihanna leaving the London Hotel together around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Later that evening, during the Grammy telecast for which both Brown and Rihanna were no-shows, bodyguards for the couple were seen moving their luggage out of the London.

The ramifications of Brown's arrest? Already charged with making criminal threats – defined in part as a situation where the victim "is in fear for [his/her] life" – the R&B singer may face additional charges at the discretion of L.A.'s district attorney's office.

To help him face the legal storm, Brown has hired attorney Mark Geragos, best known for defending convicted murderer Scott Peterson, Winona Ryder after a 2001 shoplifting arrest and Michael Jackson during his child molestation trial.


An R&B Romance Turned Sour?

Rumored to be a couple towards the end of 2007, the singers were first photographed at the Grammys on Feb. 10, 2008. Often coy about their yearlong relationship, the two consistently refused to talk about their romance during interviews.

But the pair offered up other signs of their closeness, from matching star tattoos on their necks to holding hands and kissing at concerts.

Even at the Clive Davis party at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Saturday night, Brown and Rihanna looked cozy and happy.

But over recent weeks, they seemed to have hit a bumpy patch in their relationship.

"They've been fighting a lot lately," a source told PEOPLE. "Lots of ups and downs. One second they're all lovey dovey and then they're fighting like crazy. They're both pretty stubborn."
