    Eddie Murphy

Ever seen "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter"? The film used to come on TV regularly when I was growing up. Amazingly sad and beautiful film based on a novel(la) by Carson McCullers (which I subsequently tracked down and read, but I enjoyed the film more) and he was wonderful in it (along with a very young Sondra Locke and pretty much everyone else in the cast). I think that was his last nomination (1968) from what I read.

It seems to be a pretty standard manoeuvre for "celebrities" who are turned on by the press over here to want to escape to the States (see Beckham, D and Ferguson, S for example). They view the US as a country which is more forgiving and where people don't try to knock you down all the time. Once the tabloid press over here decide they don't like you, they can be absolutely merciless and there's really no way back except to keep a very low profile for a very long time, so a fair number of people feel they're better off crossing the Atlantic and trying to re-start their lives in the USA. While the US may not like her any more, she is not likely to suffer as much from bad press, one of the principal reasons being that the US doesn't really have a national press (excluding papers like USA today) to compare with what we have here. However she may have underestimated the role of the internet and the rise of channels like E! etc. I suppose the other thing, of course, is that there are more prominent magnets for the glare of media attention (see Lohan, L; Hilton, P; Spears, B; etc.) and they will probably deflect the spotlight from her.

I wish McCartney's other kids could step up and give it to this asshole with both barrels, but I bet they won't. I think you can see from the quote at the end of the article that BobbyD posted that those on McCartney's side are going to keep shtum. The other thing to bear in mind is the source of the original article. If it was from the UK tabloid press, as it would seem to be judging by the spokesman's response to it, then it's veracity could well be questioned. The UK tabloid press are a law unto themselves and anything emanating from them should always be taken with a pinch of salt, especially when they decide to "go after" someone, as they clearly have done in this case.

    Diva Behavior Reports

Well, there's undoubtedly an element of truth in what you say but it is all about observance of local customs and respecting the wishes and customs of your host. Interestingly I was just reading an article in the UK press stating that Dubya was angry with British journalists because they refuse to stand up when he comes into the White House Press Room.

    Evangeline Lilly - Dominic Monaghan

His first (I think) real role was in a TV series shown here in the UK called Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. It was made by the BBC. The imdb page is here and shows it was made between 1996 and 1998. I caught some re-runs the other day on a channel that shows a lot of old BBC stuff but the point I wanted to make is that he did look like a fairly typical pimply teenager in that show. As for Evangeline Lilly, you can see by going back through the pics in this thread that she's lost weight over her time on Lost.

    Daniel Craig

One very good review of Casino Royale, or perhaps more precisely of Daniel Craig, in the Guardian here. The Guardian is one of the "broadsheet" papers (as distinct from the tabloids) in the UK and normally writes relatively "sensible" reviews.

The fight is getting nastier. Guardian comment article with links to other articles. The very last "headline revelation" at the bottom of the original article says it all.

    What Ever Happened to.....?

I actually think he is (was?) dating Keri Russell (former Watch with Kristen BI). He has done a few TV movies and is starring in a new series this fall called Jericho--I think it's on CBS. I never bought that Watch with Kristin thing about Keri and Skeet at all. Kristin's been horribly wrong in her rumours about Keri Russell before (pairing her up with Patrick Dempsey before the final season of Felicity for example). Last I heard (about six months back) Keri had a new non-business boyfriend with whom she'd been seen around NYC a lot. I used to read a Felicity message board and they were pretty up to date on gossip and sightings of Keri and there was never anything reported about her and Skeet. I think it was simply circumstantial. They filmed two things together in quick succession, "The Magic of Ordinary Days" and "Into the West", at about the time he was separating from his wife and I think people put two and two together and made three hundred and eighty nine.

Well, I know people might rate the US dollar as a strong currency but to say $100 US = £50 million is stretching things a touch is it not ?

    Rachel Weisz

Baby is indeed very cute. Is it just me or does Rachel Weisz look like Keira Knightley might in 10 years time provided she has (quick maths 3 meals a day times 365 days a year times 10 years equals...) 10950 good meals between now and then?

    Halle Berry

Careful there, she might have the same lawyer as Reese Witherspoon and sue you for damaging her career prospects in the immediate future. It might not be Halle, either, it might be a lifelike statue that's about to be cemented in place.

It may be new. She recently had a "revision amputation", presumably a further operation on her leg.If you're interested in reading more, you could do worse than to go to the Guardian's (UK newspaper) media section. Comment on the McCartney saga. You need to register to read the stories (three or four articles down the page) but you can do that here with BugMeNot. You can also see a statement from her lawyers there. The "comment " story in that group of stories deals with what I mentioned further up the page. The fact that these old stories are being published now the McCartneys have separated is more to do with the tabloid media's perception that they can publish now and not suffer a backlash than with any clout that Sir Paul is perceived to have.

It's nothing to do with him and everything to do with the press. The press supposedly had all this stuff on her, but judged that by publishing it when they were together it would not be in their interests since the public would react badly to them attacking Paul McCartney's wife and there would be a backlash. Now he and his wife are "separated" the press have made the call that they can publish it and it will not damage them, so they're going ahead and publishing. He would not have sufficient clout to stop them publishing now if he wanted to do so. It's how the press perceive the public reaction that's the key to what's happening.

Perhaps, but look at it this way. Should it come to trial her defence lawyers have a perfect line of attack. Those making the allegations have been involved in vice, either as fellow "ladies" or as the madam or have acted to procure "ladies" for their clients and therefore are inherently unreliable. They may also have been paid by the News of the World and/or The Sun. I highly doubt any of the clients would be willing to take the stand and so it will come down to whose word is trusted more (if it gets to Court). However, I don't know if there are special circumstances that apply because this is a libel case. This particular story is instructive because what you are seeing is what the tabloid British press will do to you if they don't like you and they've got something on you. They're absolutely merciless.
