Melissa Etheridge & Tammy Lynn Michaels

Etheridge Speaks About Cancer Surgery Monday Oct 18, 2004 3:45pm EST By Stephen M. Silverman people.com Melissa Etheridge is recuperating at her Los Angeles area home following two surgical operations to treat breast cancer, according to a message the singer posted on her Web site. Etheridge, 43, says that a tumor and her lymph nodes were removed, and that the next step for her is to undergo chemotherapy. "I still have both of my breasts and whether I will keep them is a bridge I have to cross later," she says on the site. Etheridge also thanks her fans and her partner, actress Tammy Lynn Michaels, for all their love and support. Etheridge underwent a lumpectomy after the discovery of a lump in her breast during a self-examination. As she said in a statement to PEOPLE last week: "I'm taking all of this one day at a time and spending time with the ones I love. I want to thank everyone for their concern and outpouring of affection." Etheridge, who was forced to cancel 11 concert dates in seven cities this month because of the medical emergency, is still planning to shoot a pilot for ABC that has been called a "Will & Grace" in reverse, in which she plays a gay music teacher who lives with a straight man, the Associated Press reports. She and Michaels held a commitment ceremony in September 2003. Etheridge shares custody of a daughter and son with former partner Julie Cypher, who had the children through artificial insemination using a sperm donation from rocker David Crosby.

    Courteney Cox & David Arquette

Cox and Arquette Add to TBS Reality Slate(Monday, October 18 09:35 AM)LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) TBS has signed a development deal with Coquette Prods., home of Courteney Cox ("Friends") and David Arquette ("Scream"), to develop a slew of entirely unspecified reality concepts for the network. Although TBS offers no hints on what Coquette plans to deliver, the nebulous ideas will be targeted for development into pilots or full series in 2005."This deal with Coquette Productions demonstrates TBSs strong commitment to working with the best talent in the industry in developing our programming slate," says Steve Koonin, executive vice president and chief operating officer for TBS and TNT. "The ideas Coquette brings to the table will be invaluable as TBS continues to build upon its 'very funny' branding with innovative and comedic reality show concepts."TBS' current commitment to reality television programming has yielded the recent "Outback Jack," as well as upcoming hopefuls like "He's a Lady" and the Mike Fleiss-produced "The Real Gilligan's Island.""Over the past year, TBS has established its credentials as a major destination for innovative reality television," says Thea Mann, Coquette's head of development. "We are thrilled to have the chance to add our own unique concepts to TBS's terrific slate."Launched in 2004, Coquette has already lined up a large roster of projects in development. Working through a first-look deal with Warner Bros., the shingle is creating "Dirt" at FX, "The Fall and Rise of Taylor Kennedy" (also known as "Rehab") at HBO and two shows -- "Midnightly News" and "Daisy, the All-American Girl" -- at FOX.

    Jude Law

people.com There is a dark side to being one-half of sexy couple Jude Law and Sienna Miller ? so she told us at the London premiere of their movie Alfie last week. "I'm not coping very well with all the attention, if I'm honest," confided the British actress. "You just become very thick-skinned and a little bit cynical and keep your family and friends close by." As for the recent rumors about the couple becoming engaged, Miller, 22, said: "It's rubbish ? we're not getting married. It's absolutely not true." On a lighter note, we asked her just how much Law resembles his womanizing title character in the movie. "The good bits Jude has," she told us, "and thank God he doesn't have the bad ones." After the premiere, the couple appeared at the afterparty at Koko, a refurbished theater-cum-nightclub in London's Camden section. They posed for the cameras outside, then dashed straight to the VIP room without passing through the party. Alfie opens Nov. 5. Jude Law and Sienna Miller CREDIT: IAN WEST/PA/ABACA

    Diva Behavior Reports

gossiplist.com The oddest sighting I have ever had, and that has colored my perception of the actor ever since, was Vince Vaughn several years ago (just after "Swingers" came out). A friend and I were sitting right near him and a couple friends for lunch at a deli, and he just went off on the waitress for not bringing him "half and half french fries and onions rings" (they let you order that in place of just fries or just rings). To clarify: she brought him both fries and onions rings, but the distribution was apparently not 50/50 enough for his liking (he kept slamming his arm on the table in a dividing motion to signify "half and half"). He completely went nuts, yelling at the waitress etc. (who was very polite, and seemed quite upset by the encounter). My friend and I couldn't stop laughing b/c it was so bizarre. Now every time I see him on screen, all I can think of is him doing that arm slam-down motion and yelling "half and half".

The only thing that bugs me about this show is that they lie to each other about crap that no one would ever lie about. Why not say you killed a Poler Bear?? People need to know what's out there. And why not say that you're trying to locate where the signal came from? And tell people about the bloody signal, everyone needs to know what their chances are, forget this "it will make them lose hope" crap.

    Martha Stewart

Martha: Dear Diary, Prison's Great EOnline.com by Charlie Amter Oct 16, 2004, 10:15 AM PT Things aren't so bad at "Camp Cupcake" after all. Just ask Martha Stewart. The locked-up domestic diva took to her marthatalks.com Website Friday to post her first comments since entering prison last week. Stewart says the West Virginia facility, where she is serving out her five-month sentence for lying about a stock sale, is "fine...pretty much what I anticipated." The best news, says Stewart, is that "everyone is nice--both the officials and my fellow inmates." According to a breathless report on Federal Prison Camp Alderson in the new Star magazine, Stewart should be worried about people being too nice. The glossy quotes an unnamed sources inside the so-called Camp Cupcake saying "the guards are 90 percent male, and sex between some of them and the inmates is commonplace." Another inmate told the magazine the female inmates also regularly engage in sexual acts. Nevertheless, Stewart is putting on a happy face just a week into her sentence. "I have adjusted and am very busy," she continues in her letter. "The camp is like an old-fashioned college campus--without the freedom, of course." Of course. "I'll be making postings now and then, but thank you for the concern and good wishes expressed in the thousands of emails you have recently sent to this Website," Stewart writes. "I am also touched that supporters have already sent hundreds of letters to me at Alderson in my first week here." The 63-year-old jailbird's future Internet postings will likely be as brief as her first. Aside from prison restrictions on her outside communication, publishing pundits expect her to save most of the juicy stuff for her prison memoirs, which could fetch upwards of $5 million. Based on her posting, Federal Inmate 55170-054 doesn't seem lonely one week into her stint, but the sometimes dubious Star quotes an unnamed prison source as saying the guru of good things seemed "overwhelmed" and "depressed," despite an early visit from daughter Alexis. Stewart, who was convicted in March of lying to federal investigators about a suspicious stock sale, is pursuing an appeal while she serves in the slammer. In closing out her missive, Stewart asks well-wishers to stop sending her "gifts and money," which are a no-no for inmates--and it's not like she needs the cash. She asks instead that fans make a donation to the American Cancer Society and continue to support her. Says Stewart, "Your goodwill and best wishes will get me through this next chapter in my life."

    Matt Damon and Wife

Here's the quote that made me laugh from Cosmo Nov 04 Issue: Q: What's the weirdest thing a femal fan has said to you? A: The funniest thing was when this woman walked up to me and said, "Matt Damon," and I said, "Yeah," and she said, "I have to say, I never got it. I saw all of your movies and I just never got what was so great about you." And I went, "Oh, all right, I'm sorry to hear that." And she said, "But then I saw that Bourne Identity, and for the last month, I've been touching myself and thinking of nothing but you." I think I'll stick this in Fan Behavior thread too

    Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts Makes Baby Talk with Oprah Thursday Oct 14, 2004 12:00pm EST By Shia Kapos people.com CREDIT: AP PHOTO/HARPO PRODUCTIONS, INC, GEORGE BURNS She's six months pregnant with twins and, says Julia Roberts, she has not experienced a case of morning sickness. But on Oct. 6 a feeling of queasiness crept up on the 36-year-old mother-to-be, PEOPLE reports in its latest issue. Sitting down with Oprah Winfrey for her first TV interview since becoming pregnant, Roberts "was overwhelmed," says an audience member at the taping of the show. "She said she hadn't felt nauseous during her pregnancy until today, with all the energy and applause from the audience." After taking several months off to nest with husband Danny Moder, 35, the actress is hitting the promotional circuit again, for two upcoming films. Roberts stars in the romantic drama Closer (Dec. 3) with Clive Owen and Natalie Portman, who joined her on the set of Oprah. She'll then be seen in the all-star cast of Ocean's Twelve (Dec. 10). She has also been busy recording voice-overs for AOL's new TV ads, which began airing this month. But for Roberts, what's on her mind are the babies ? a boy and a girl, she told Winfrey ? due in January. She recently bought matching T-shirts (one pink, the other blue) at a Taos boutique near her 82-acre ranch in New Mexico, and she's maintaining her expanding figure with Pilates classes. Though some things are out of her control ? the kicking on the right side of her belly, or her changing laugh, which she says now makes her sound like a hearty truck driver ? her pregnancy has been "very empowering," she told Winfrey. "She's optimistic and excited about being a mom," says an Oprah audience member. "She wants to spread her love to those two babies."

    Macaulay Culkin

Culkin Pleads Not Guilty to Drug Charges Thursday Oct 14, 2004 8:00am EST By Stephen M. Silverman people.com CREDIT: BAUER-GRIFFIN Macaulay Culkin pleaded not guilty in an Oklahoma City courtroom Wednesday to charges of illegally possessing marijuana and prescription anxiety medicine relating to his arrest last month on a road trip from California to New York. The Home Alone star, 24, appeared with his attorney to enter his pleas on two misdemeanor charges and left after his brief court appearance, Reuters reports. He remains free on $4,000 bond posted at the time of his arrest. Culkin and actor pal Brett Tabisel, 22, were pulled over for speeding in Oklahoma City on Sept. 17 while on a cross-country trip. Police say that Tabisel gave them permission to search the car, and Culkin offered to open a black bag for an officer ? who says he found 17.3 grams of marijuana inside, PEOPLE reported. Culkin also had 16 sleeping pills and 8 Xanax anti-anxiety pills on him, cops say. Culkin was booked on drug possession charges; Tabisel was charged with two traffic violations and marijuana possession. A rep for Culkin declined comment, as did a rep for Tabisel. Although the charges against Culkin could conceivably bring up to one year behind bars, Oklahoma law enforcement officials say it is unlikely the actor would be incarcerated, if convicted. Instead, prosecutors are said to be asking that he be enrolled in drug-treatment program as part of a plea agreement that would exclude prison time. The next hearing in the case has been set for Dec. 2.

AFFLECK GIVES HUNDREDS OF EXPECTANT DADS A SURPRISE GIFTsfgate.comHollywood hunk Ben Affleck showed off his generous side during an appearance on Oprah Winfrey's talk show, when he gave 640 expectant dads their own diaper bags.Affleck was beamed to hundreds of fans in a pre-recorded message for Winfrey's show on Monday, when she hosted a huge baby shower for the pregnant wives of 640 American soldiers based at Kentucky's Fort Campbell. He joked, "Oprah called me and told me that she was having the world's biggest shower with 700 women, so imagine my excitement when I thought I was gonna get to come down there and take a shower with 700 of you."Believe me, I wanted to get on the plane! To my embarrassment, they told me, 'No, no, it's a baby shower,' and I guess that's something a little different. Anyway they decided it maybe was best to keep me back home."He then announced he had bought the women's husbands Diaper Dads, which prompted them all to scream with delight.Denise Richards, Heather Locklear, Sharon Stone and Elle MacPherson also spoke to the women via tape and handed over gifts, while Cindy Crawford, Martina McBride and Kenny Chesney gave their presents out in person. But generous Winfrey stole the show when she announced that Johnson & Johnson plans to give each of the women $1,000 to fly in a friend or family member for the birth.

    Avril Lavigne

ROCK BAND'S GROUPIE REWARDS sfgate.com The members of Sum 41 love spending time with appreciative groupies after their shows, and often reward their roadies for bringing ladies backstage. The Canadian rockers regularly indulge in backstage activities with their female fans, and have devised a method of paying back their tour crew for supplying them with women. Frontman Deryck Whibley, who has been romantically linked to singer Avril Lavigne, tells FHM, "For 80 percent of bands, it's a total waste being a rock star. They think it's a cliche to take advantage of the many opportunities that are presented to them. Not us, though -- we take everything. "When it comes to getting girls backstage, we give each of our road crew guys 10 passes. The key is to write the roadie's initials on them so when the girls come backstage, you know who to thank. "We keep a chart too -- whoever brings back the best girl gets a point. When they get five points, we buy them a present. That's usually bottles of vodka or a big bag of weed."

Prince Causes a Stir with New Videoimdb.comThe video for Prince 's new song "Cinnamon Girl" is causing quite a stir before it's even been released, as it follows the hardships of a teen Arab-American girl in a post 9-11 America. The clip, directed by video veteran Phil Harder, features Oscar-nominated Whale Rider star Keisha Castle-Hughes as an Arab-American girl who is fed up with the anti-Arab sentiments she encounters in everyday life. Disillusioned and angered, New Zealander Castle-Hughes' character detonates a bomb in an airport terminal, exploding herself and others. But a reverse motion immediately following the explosion reveals that it is only a thought of hers. Prince, who only appears in the video intermittently, sings, "Cinnamon girl mixed heritage / Never knew the meaning of color lines / 9-11 turned that all around / When she got accused of this crime." The video will premiere in America next week.

    Tiger Woods

Tiger: Being Married Won't Affect My Game Tuesday Oct 12, 2004 3:00pm EST By Stephen M. Silverman people.com In his first public statement since getting married last Tuesday in a sunset ceremony in Barbados, newlywed Tiger Woods, still honeymooning with his Swedish bride Elin Nordegren, says being married will not affect his game. "It is not going to change the way I play golf," Woods tells fans on his Web site. "I have been with Elin and happy together the last two years. Just because you are married it doesn't change your relationship. It doesn't change who we are." He adds: "I just hope I can get the ball in the hole a little faster." The golf champ also spoke to reporters aboard his honeymoon yacht, telling them that, although he remains committed to his sport, he isn't sure when he'll get back into the swing of things. "We're having so much fun on the honeymoon," he said. But Woods will have to make up his mind soon if he wishes to participate in some Florida tournaments, though he has vowed to play in his own Target World Challenge that's set to tee off Dec. 8. As it is, Woods has not won a stroke play tournament this year and has slipped from the world's No. 1 golfer to No. 3 in recent weeks, falling behind Vijay Singh and Ernie Els. About getting married, which the bride and groom kept as secret as possible, Woods told reporters: "We didn't tell anybody until the last minute. They all said, 'Oh, it is? That soon?' Yeah, well, there you go. You can still get cheap airfare. We made sure of that. ... To have all our family and friends there, it made it a very special occasion. Our families and friends are always going in different directions, so it's always hard to get them all together. We were able to do that for this occasion, which made it even more special for all of us. We had a great time." Woods, 28, and Nordegren, 24, the Swedish former nanny and model he met at the 2001 British Open and proposed to last November, said "I do" Oct. 5 in a sunset ceremony before about 200 family and friends. The nuptials were held in the largest of four tents set up at the posh Sandy Lanes resort, with 500 red roses adorning the end of the aisle. Guests (including NBA stars Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, as well as Oprah Winfrey) feasted on shrimp cocktail, flying fish, macaroni pie and a four-tier wedding cake. But it was Tiger's trademark cool that really took the cake. "He didn't act like he was going to get married," a source told PEOPLE. "He was very relaxed, like this was any other day for him."
