Johnny Depp

CRITTER TITTERS Page SixJOHNNY Depp had a lot of explaining to do after he flew into Miami from Lima, Peru, recently. "The customs guys went straight for me and asked what I had in my bag," Depp told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I said, 'Piranhas.' " The quirky actor was carrying stuffed piranhas and a dead vampire bat to add to his extensive taxidermy collection. And then there was his vitamin powder. "It had exploded during the flight," Depp said. "He unzipped the bag and a poof of white powder came out. He thought he'd hit the mother lode."Can you imagine??

    Harrison Ford & Calista Flockhart

Harrison Ford: King of Comedy?by Ethan AlterTV Guide"Hilarious" is probably not the first adjective that springs to mind when one thinks of Harrison Ford . "Heroic," yes, "cool," almost definitely, but "hilarious"? A look back at his past credits, though, reveals that this action icon is no stranger to comedy ? a fact he's more than happy to emphasize."I have done comedies from the very beginning of my career," Ford says. "I've always considered the Indiana Jones movies to be comedies. In Star Wars, I had a comedic role to play. And then I've done a lot of romantic comedies, like Sabrina and Six Days, Seven Nights, which by their nature are somewhat less funny than this movie is.""This movie" is Hollywood Homicide, Ford's most recent effort, which finds the 60-year-old actor starring as an LAPD detective opposite Josh Hartnett. Directed by Ron Shelton (Bull Durham ), the film mixes action and comedy, giving Ford the chance to crack wise while he's pursuing the bad guys. "I like making comedies, but what I'm always looking for is the best material that I can find, the best people that I can work with, and something different than what I've done lately," he explains. "I think I got a lot of that with this opportunity."For all Ford's enthusiasm, Hollywood Homicide hasn't exactly made a killing at the box office; the film grossed a disappointing $11.7 million its opening weekend. His next project, however, has blockbuster written all over it ? the long-awaited fourth Indiana Jones adventure. Ford won't spill any details ("I'm looking forward to working with Steven [spielberg ] again" is all he'll offer), but the film appears set to go before cameras sometime next year with an eye towards a possible Independence Day 2005 release.Meanwhile, Ford already seems to be getting back into character. Asked if he has any favorite quotes from his many movies, he chooses Dr. Jones' well-remembered quip, "It's not the years, it's the mileage." "I still like to insist that," the once and future Indy says, smiling. "I may be old, but I'm relatively low mileage."

    Antonio Banderas & Melanie Griffith

Old Rush

Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith make quite the classic Hollywood coupling at the Tony Awards in New York. Classic as in a remake of Sunset Boulevard , that is. Banderas could play the young hunk in his dark slim pinstripe suit and Caesar haircut. And Griffith's clearly decked out as fading silent screen queen role in a too tight, tad tacky green sparkly gown, sprayed stiff platinum waves and harsh crimson lipstick. Talk about typecasting!

    Kate Winslet

Reverend Reveals Mendes-Winslet Wedding Detailsimdb.comKate Winslet and Sam Mendes sipped champagne and ate barbecued food at their Caribbean wedding last month, according to the church minister who officiated at the ceremony. The Reverend John Gumbs admits he wasn't aware the Titanic star was an actress, although he did know American Beauty director Mendes was a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). The celebrity pair exchanged vows at a small-scale ceremony - attended by just three friends and Winslet's two-year-old daughter Mia - at a seaside villa on the tranquil island of Anguilla. Reverend Gumbs says, "The marriage license was issued to me, and the wedding was on the lawn at a very beautiful private villa, the kind only celebrities can afford to stay at, on the seashore in Barnes Bay. Mr. Mendes and Miss Winslet were both charmingly dressed, and it was a very nice occasion. It was an orthodox Methodist ceremony, in which neither promised to obey each other. Everybody was beautiful and suitably attired, and it was a very private affair. They had a drink, and then I left before the delicacies, but there was plenty of room for a barbecue." The minister adds, "I knew that Mr. Mendes was a Commander of the British Empire, and he's a relatively young man for such an honor so I knew he had to be of some importance. I didn't know of Miss Winslet's acting career, but I gathered that she was a celebrity. I have heard of Titanic but I didn't know she was in it."

LOPEZ FIRES HER DYNAMIC DUO PageSixIT was a Monday night massacre for the creative team that guided Jennifer Lopez to the top of the Hollywood heap.Longtime manager Benny Medina - who many say made Lopez into the huge star she is today - was let go (as PAGE SIX predicted last week), along with her agent of six months, Endeavor star Patrick Whitesell."Benny was let go because of [fiancé] Ben [Affleck] mostly," our source said. "Ben hated Benny. He hated how Benny created this diva image of Jennifer."Although it was widely reported that Lopez would insist on white flowers, white candles and 300-count thread sheets in her hotel rooms, our insider said the demands were all from Medina, not Lopez."When Jennifer did the ?Enough' press junket, Benny insisted he have suites in the hotels as well," the source revealed. "It was like the studio was dealing with two stars, not one. And she was blamed for it."Listen, Jennifer never really cared," the spy said, but added: "Benny made her, along with [former Sony exec] Tommy Mottola. Those things never bothered her, but they bothered Ben."It was also a control issue with Affleck. He is just another Puffy [Combs]. He is almost worse with the control issues."Meanwhile, Whitesell - who reps Affleck - told the media that he dumped Lopez, not the other way around, because he couldn't work with Medina.Spies say Lopez is heading to CAA, under the tutelage of Richard Lovett - adding to the high-wattage CAA star power that includes Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu."Watch for a huge exodus from CAA soon," a Hollywood insider predicted. "Sandra was already angry about Julia coming to her agency, and the other women will not be happy about Jennifer coming."As for management, PAGE SIX hears Mottola was trying to get Lopez into his new firm - and this time may succeed.Lopez, via her new p.r. man, Dan Klores , said: "Change is often very difficult to make. Benny did a wonderful job for me over the years, and I will be eternally grateful to him. Patrick is a great, great agent and an even better human being, but for a variety of reasons I needed a change."

June 11, 2003Martha's Pal Gets Maximum SentenceSTEPHEN M. SILVERMANpeople.comImClone Systems founder Sam Waksal -- whose insider-trading scandal also ensnared his friend Martha Stewart -- will be trading his jet-setting ways for seven years and three months in prison.Citing Waksal's "lawlessness and arrogance," Manhattan Federal Judge William Pauley on Tuesday also sentenced the 55-year-old former CEO to pay nearly $4.3 million in fines and back taxes, the Associated Press reports."The harm that you wrought is truly incalculable," said Pauley, ordering Waksal to report to prison July 2. Until then, he will wear an electronic monitor and remain under house arrest in his posh SoHo loft. The stiff sentence is being seen as a bad omen for Stewart, 61, who last week was indicted on charges stemming from her December 2001 sale of ImClone shares one day before the FDA declined to approve of one of the biotech company's new cancer drugs, Erbitux.Prosecutors say Stewart was acting on a tip from Waksal. Stewart has pleaded not guilty to the charges.Last fall, Waksal admitted that he tipped his daughter, Aliza, to dump her ImClone shares in December 2001. Waksal has not publicly implicated Stewart, AP notes. In court Tuesday, with his entire family in attendance, Waksal pleaded in a broken voice for mercy, apologizing to cancer patients for any delay the investigation might have caused in approval of Erbitux."I am deeply distressed and so very sorry for my actions," he said. "I want to apologize to all the people who may have had confidence in me and whose confidence I betrayed."He also said, according to New York's Daily News: "I feel great remorse for what I did, but I do not feel bitter."After his sentencing, Waksal reportedly hugged his brother and his 80-year-old father inside the courtroom. He did not address the crush of camera crews and reporters waiting outside.
