Big Laughs, Big Stars (but No Brad) Open Comic-Con

Today 12:51 PM PDT by Jen Yamato

San Diego Comic-Con attendees who stood in line all morning for the expo's first major film panel—about animated supervillian movie MegaMind—were treated to Will Ferrell painted all blue, Tina Fey threatening Betty White—and a surprise appearance by co-star Brad Pitt!

Well, not quite:

Pitt, who's currently shooting Steven Soderbergh's Moneyball, was a no-show at the panel for DreamWorks' animated villain adventure Megamind, despite whispers that maybe, just maybe, he'd be in attendance Thursday along with Angelina Jolie.

"Unfortunately, since Angelina's here, Brad had to watch the kids," quipped director Tom McGrath.

Instead, Ferrell, Fey, and Jonah Hill were joined onstage by a life-sized cardboard cutout of Brad Pitt, which Fey sat promptly on her lap during the panel Q&A, explaining, "I've always wanted to do this."

Asked to name her celebrity nemesis, Fey targeted Hollywood's favorite Golden Girl. "Betty White is my nemesis," she joked. "And one day I will fight her in a ball of fire!"

Ferrell, who showed up in blue paint and a full homemade costume dressed like his animated alter ego, Megamind, was more mysterious revealing his Hollywood enemy: "Charlize Theron. I can't really get into it, but there's a lot of bad blood there."

After making a (joking) public stand in support of Mel Gibson, Jonah Hill recanted and made the first big announcement of Comic-Con 2010:

"I'm officially announcing it right now: I'm playing the Hulk in The Avengers movie!"

Right, and that's really Brad Pitt in Tina Fey's lap...

During this morning's other panel, for Disney's Tron: Legacy, fans got a few surprise bits of news:

• Last year's surprise guest Johnny Depp made another unannounced appearance—in character!—as Hall H audiences were treated to a taped message from Captain Jack Sparrow himself. Recruiting members for his next sea voyage (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, in theaters May 20, 2011), he promised "zombies, cutthroats, mermaids, and the vicious Penelope Cruz."

• Director Guillermo del Toro also popped in unannounced to reveal a teaser for his next project, a film adaptation of Disney's Haunted Mansion theme park attraction that he promises will be scary. More importantly, it will have nothing to do with the Eddie Murphy movie of the same name.

Comic-Con Preview: 11 Movies to Geek Out About

Wed., Jul. 21, 2010 2:25 PM PDT by Jen Yamato

Eonline.com

Tron: Legacy

Nearly three decades after Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) hacked his way into ENCOM, his son (Garrett Hedlund) follows him into the same cyber world and gets caught up in gladiator games. Or to put it briefly: Olivia Wilde in a skintight Tron suit. Enough said.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Will Joss Whedon unveil his Avengers cast at Comic-Con? Will Ed Norton's Hulk replacement show up? Fans get their first looks at Chris Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger and possibly give fans even more to scream about?

Sucker Punch

Vanessa Hudgens is one of the stars of Zack Snyder's 1950s-set girl-power flick about a young mental patient who escapes into a fantastical world with her fellow lady inmates. Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino and Jon Hamm also star.

The Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds will wear a CG suit as the DC Comics superhero recruited to police the galaxy with the help of a magical ring. Mark Strong, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard also costar in the 2011 3D spectacle from Casino Royale helmer Martin Campbell.

Red :inlove:

Bruce Willis is a former black ops agent who calls his old pals Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman when assassins threaten his retirement bliss. Mirren wielding automatic weapons and dazzling the geek crowd? We're so there.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) pits indie flick hero Michael Cera in epic battles against seven "evil exes" to win Mary Elizabeth Winstead's heart in this adaptation of the geektastic comic book.

Drive Angry 3D

Nicolas Cage drives. He's angry. He's driving angry in three dimensions. This bloody, road-rage-fueled 2011 action-horror pic also stars Amber Heard, William Fichtner and Twilight's Billy Burke.

The Green Hornet

Seth Rogen dons the Green Hornet's mask (and takes a scripting credit alongside Superbad cowriter Evan Goldberg) in Michel Gondry's action-packed adaptation. Cameron Diaz and Christoph Waltz costar, while Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou makes his Hollywood debut as Kato.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1

It's the beginning of the end for Harry Potter and his friends (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint) as Voldemo—we mean, He Who Must Not Be Named—wages war on the entire wizarding world. Also, it's the first Potter presentation ever at the Con, but will any of the stars show?

Thor

Will Chris Hemsworth be in attendance when Marvel Studios present its highly anticipated 2011 superhero tent poles? Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings round out this Scandinavian tale set for May 2011.

Batman 3

He's not officially on the schedule, but geek gossip has director Chris Nolan pegged to appear during Comic-Con, possibly to deliver details on a certain upcoming sequel—and we're not talking Inception 2. Chew on that, Batman fans!

I went yesterday & it was a lot of fun! I saw rob dyrdek (he's so short), I also saw Ali Larter from Heroes. She had a bunch of security all around her & was walking around like she was the shit. She looked about 5 months pregnant. I saw Tom Sizemore and he was all pale & sweaty. I guess Celebrity Rehab didn't help much. Eric Estrada was also cruisin around. Orlando Jones was signing autographs. He seemed really cool & nice to everyone.
