    What are you reading?

I know I mentioned when I read the first book, am now on the second book by Ariana Franklin: The Serpent's Tale. I have about 100 pages left. Love it! As much as the first (Mistress of the Art of Death). Trained in medical forensics in 12th century Italy, brought to England by King Henry II to solve crimes for him. Interesting characters, well developed, good history, and a bit of intriguing medieval CSI for those of us who like that sort of thing!

    Charlie Sheen

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this--I felt weird saying anything at first, but watching the re-runs of older Two and a Half Men episodes, on the same nights I'd catch up on the last episodes of this season (I love you dvr!!) just made the difference so evident to me..... Jon Cryer has aged too, but he doesn't have a bloated dissipated look like Sheen does. Ducky forever

    Charlie Sheen

he is in that "awkward 40s" stage edited because I can't spell where all the booze, drugs, and the wildness of your mispent youth catch up with you. He looks like shit. What's been hard for me to figure out is that he's pretty much always been a drinker, drug user, manwhore, right? Is it just that as he greets middle age, he can't cover it up as well anymore?

    Charlie Sheen

He's been looking terrible lately--I noticed it on the tv show--so if hair/makeup/lighting can't make him look better.....He's very bloated, and aging not so well.....Though he looks a lot more like his dad now. And Martin Sheen is handsome & distinguished....I don't think Charlie aspires to those adjectives quite yet

    Sci Fi TV

Have you seen any dates/promos for its summer (I assume) return?? I think Monk & Psyche on USA usually come back around July and thought last year Eureka came back at the same time....

    Sci Fi TV

We stopped watching for about a year after they cancelled Farscape--that was the first time they had a change in management and went for more "mainstream" offerings, I think. We don't watch BSG (yet....My husband hasn't discovered it, but give him time....We just started watching Dr. Who a few months ago---it takes him a while to "find" things ) I like Eureka--that's the only other original series I can think of they've done that I like. But my husband says after the first few episodes it got too "fantastical" for him--again, moved away from the "science" aspect....And we wonder why our country produces so few scientists and engineers (relatively speaking) these days....Nothing to inspire them as children!

    Julia Roberts

With the goofy grin and the kid pushing the heck out of her boob, looks like a very normal family to me....Though if Mommy is wearing a sun hat, little Henry should too....Of course, I have no idea if he just flung his to the ground seconds before this shot was taken....

    Sci Fi TV

Hmm, they tried changing a couple years ago, but went back to more "pure" scifi because the change didn't help their ratings.....Wonder why they'd try the same thing again???

    Jada Pinkett-Smith & Will Smith

I usually take "compound" to refer to the physical aspects. So if they had a main house, caretakers house, nanny apartment, pool & pool house, and so on--that's a compound--regardless of how many people live there.

    Elizabeth Hurley

They do that a lot, all go out together. I have no idea what sort of relationship it is--if it's platonic or what. I think Grant is her son's godfather, too, right? You know, they all seem happy with the relationship, so fine with me!

    Anna Wintour

You have got to be shitting me. I love her hair Apparently her schedule is get up every morning 5am, play tennis (her exercise routine) shower, get hair professionally blown out, go to work. I want her life. Sorry, I can't help it....But I like her hairstyle and I really love that she found a style she loves and sticks with it, no fads for Anna. I don't even mind all the bitchy stuff. I'm not working for her Seriously--it's called paying your dues--most of us have done it! You work for one crazy-ass person, you learn a shitload of stuff, then you quit before you're driven to suicide....

    Anna Wintour

It's supposedly inspired by Storm from the X-men. That's what she said at least. Fashionistas are loving it, but it doesn't work for me. I've said it before, I'm apparently just too "pedestrian" in my tastes to be a true fashionista

    What are you reading?

I just started Season of the Witch by Natasha Mostert. Good so far The review calls it a cross between The Matrix, Interview with the Vampire, and The Historian. Since The Historian is the only one of those 3 I actually enjoyed....It's paranormal, esoteric, but so far very well written and a quick read. I didn't know anything about it--just picked it up off the library shelves--but the author has written other things I can look for if I like it. Author's background is lexicography and applied linguistics.

    What are you reading?

But isn't it rather nice (esp. among a group of popular culture obsessed gossip snarkers such as ourselves) to find we're all rather literate too I love to gossip, I love knowing what's going on in Hollyweird, but this is very possibly my favorite thread--I get such good ideas here

    John Cusack

Plus, he doesn't court press so much (usually only when he has to--like promoting a movie) The rest of the time--he is pretty much under the radar. And I think those of us who "care" give people who aren't in our faces every day a little more leeway. That's my excuse anyway. Plus he's talented. And hot

    What are you reading?

I completely understand, and I feel bad for you I'm just learning not to feel guilty when (like today) I carpool with my mom and she has to tell me everything she did over the weekend. So I tell her everything my husband did (both have multiple outdoor projects they *have* to work on every weekend) and then slip in how many pages I read over the weekend.....My husband and I are spending a long weekend this week at my in-laws' beach house, and I'm already plotting how to escape the rest of them so I can READ! I want to relax--they're "do something every minute, must entertain the guests" type people, and even though they've known me for 10 years and I continually tell them I don't want to do anything but veg & read, still.....Oh well--gotta love 'em. Got off on a bit of a tangent there--sorry In the meantime--until you get your relaxing vacation--any time for bubble baths at the end of the day?? You could at least get a few chapters in that way

Summer is coming, bittermuch? Do you have any vacation plans? Long flights??

    Miley Cyrus

Vanity Fair totally denies that her parents/chaperones/Disney suits left her alone at the shoot......That everyone saw the photos--they were digital--as they were being shot, and when she was interviewed about the photos for the magazine interview she loved them.....

    John Cusack

John Cusack is one of the actors--I believe every nasty thing written about him but I still adore him Bit of a masochist, what can I say

    What are you reading?

I'm about half way through Three Girls and Their Brother by Theresa Rebeck. Really good so far. It's the first novel by a New York playwright. I read a review in Glamour or Marie Claire and whaddya know--my library actually had it in the same week It's about 3 teenage girls who are photographed for the New Yorker and how their life changes once they become the new IT girls. The book is split into 4 sections--one for each of the kids, it's written from their perspective.

    Robin Williams

She's 18. It's illegal. Are we supposed to be proud of her??? [i know, I know, Hollywood is different.....]

    What are you reading?

I worked at our library booksale last weekend and picked up 2 huge tote bags of books--can't wait! Lots of trashy romances (good summer reading) but I also got some more interesting books, like Barbara Tuchman's The Proud Tower: A Portrait of the World before the War, 1890-1914. Did I mention I was a european history major, years ago as an undergrad? We had to read Tuchman's The Guns of August (sentinel book about WWI) and I enjoyed it--she's a great historian who has a way with words--her books are not boring. I've been feeling lately that I missed a lot of what I had to read in high school and college and want to go back and revisit some of it (not all, trust me, if I never have to read Heidegger or Hegel again, it won't be soon enough!!) Thought this would be a good start. So as soon as I finish reading J.R. Ward's Dark Lover, I'm back to history

    Drew Barrymore

Yeah Low fat food, less of it, and more walking/play time.....What works for humans works for pets too...Oh wait, in Hollywood, no one loses weight naturally I really expected better from Drew though. I her, normally......

    Ashlee Simpson

I agree it's inappropriate to ask a woman if she's pregnant. Or even if she's planning to have kids....But it's really is her own damn fault

    Natalie Portman

Eh, I never liked Wuthering Heights so Portman can destroy it; I don't care [i did love Olivier in the movie, however....Just don't care for the plot--book or movie]
