I like to wear dresses (and I mean casual dresses, like a knit tank dress--not something you'd wear to a law office in Manhattan) and whenever my mother-in-law would see me in one (for lunch on a weekend or whatever) she'd make that comment "Well, you're looking dressed up today" in the tone that suggests "why on EARTH" would you want to dress up. And to be honest, I thought I looked pretty shlubby, but whatever. After 9 years, she no longer makes those comments to my face. She's learned that her style and mine might be drastically different but I love her son so it's ok I work in research which can be very casual. I interview patients on many days, so I want to look nice but at the same time I don't want to be unapproachable and off-putting. It's hard enough to dress for your office environment without having to take into consideration your "client" as well. Geez. It's hard being a modern woman

Golden*girl--If I admit I agree with you, does that make me a superfan too? I think it's almost in the job description for a comedian to be offensive. Even if it's only one person or a small group, if no one is offended, it's not modern comedy. (can you tell I listen to the "uncensored" comedy channel on XM, not the "family" channel? ) This does not mean I agree with everything Kathy Griffin (or any other comedian I might like or dislike) says. But I'm not going to get all up in arms because they said it.

One reason I listen to comedians so much (my favorite channel on my satellite radio) is that they tend to shine lights on hypocrisy in our society. Well, and they make me laugh
-
Well, I had the same thoughts (re drug overdose not being suicidal...) so I guess this board is full of cynics
-
I know we have it with our DirecTV satellite
-
That's almost as bad an "excuse" as Britney's "but I'm country y'all"....
-
What I found so funny on her show was how she only wanted to date guys that would get her photographed by the paps
-
I thought Dedication was worse than Citizen Girl. And I liked Nanny Diaries, so.....
-
I'd rather be married to a normal looking but nice person than a hot bitch So "better" is all relative.....
-
The People interview sounds really mature. Not at all how I imagined her. Best for all involved, I guess....

Well, the Virgin's Lover was my favorite. I can't remember how I felt about Queen's Fool. Gregory, like many other authors I like, writes books that are too similar to read close to each other (in my opinion....I prefer to spread them out) Have you read any of the Elizabethan mysteries by Fiona Buckley? Or, to go back a few years, the book that got me "launched" into Tudor history and historical fiction in general--The Autobiography of Henry VIII by Margaret George. I loved George's book Memoir of Cleopatra too. Mary Magdalene book was ok, and I struggled to get through the Helen of Troy book (most recent) I don't like to read fiction that makes me think *too* much (for that, I'll read non-fiction, or at least, a memoir ) so we might not like the same type books.

*pleads the 5th* How did I know what you would think about it, Bobby? Actually, polo shirts (like the sister is wearing) are hard for me to pull off too--I've always thought they look better on slender/small breasted women.
-
I'm such a preppy, I can't help it, I LOVE the sister's outfit. I like Dita's dress too, BUT, she is a prime example of why women with big boobs should always wear a bra. Her boobs may be magnificent when she's naked but in that dress they look horrible. Her boobs actually look much larger than I think they are....(which I realize many women would like, but it also makes her torso look like it's ALL BOOB. Again, not a look I find attractive)

So what if marketing did tell her what to do? She was smart enough to listen (unlike many of the people we post about here ) Plus, when she gives interviews these days, she comes across a heck of a lot better than the aforementioned "other people" we snark about here. I'm not a fan. Like I said, I never watched her on the View and I'm sure I won't watch her new show either. But I do like her reformed image a lot better than the diva "what will you do for ME" image she had before. And I don't miss the cleavage either
-
I read a blurb (think it's posted around here somewhere) in the promotion for her new show--I agreed with it. She was talking about how she was a diva and it wasn't right. Sounds as if she finally realized her attitude was the main reason she was having problems & getting fired & whatnot. I never knew her before the View (and didn't even watch her on that) but some people (here) have said that she used to be smart and not annoying. So maybe she's trying to get back to that. I like her new look too. Very lowkey (for her ) She said that when she was heavy she couldn't wear the kinds of clothing she wanted so she overcompensated with her hair & makeup and accessories and went over the top and she doesn't want to do that anymore. The photo I saw is very similar to the one up the page a little with the bob haircut, square glasses, and her cleavage & arms were covered. If she's going to be like that in all photos in the future, I won't mind opening this thread

Lainey quoted this as Alba sent an assistant to the house to move HER stuff out. Wonder who's right??
-
I think I have her last book on my reading list. Or was it the other Gore?
-
I left it at home so I'm guessing--I'm on chapter XV, maybe 100? 150? It's a library book, and I just renewed it, so I'll give it a little more time. I'm also in between a few books at the moment (with a lovely Harry Potter interlude over the weekend) and none are grabbing me so I've been catching up on magazines instead Oh well, if it doesn't happen it won't be because I didn't try I think because Innocents Abroad marks Twain's transition between journalism and fiction that it's a style I'm not used to for him--it was a style he wasn't used to--and that makes it all the more difficult. Just a guess on my part.
-
I'm getting ready to give up on Innocents Abroad (Twain) I keep reading another chapter and being bored to tears, plus I find the xenophobia annoying (I know, it's just a sign of the times in which Twain was writing, but still.....) How many times do I have to pick up and set down a book again before I give it up for good??

Maybe Dad has some summertime vacation visitation.....
-
Notice Julia doesn't have a lot to DO with her brother.....
-
I've read quite a few of her books--I like them fine if I read them a few months apart--they run together (like the works of many authors) if I read them right after each other. For a similar style of Brit chick lit, I prefer Marian Keyes (who's Irish, not British, but still.....it is a similar style)
-
I picked up Twain's Innocents Abroad at the library yesterday As soon as I finish Rupert Everett's autobiography/memoir, I'll start it. Get the brain engaged again
