Owen Wilson's Interview: Tell-All or PR Ploy?

Owen Wilson Opens Up Online, on His Own Terms

By SHEILA MARIKAR

Oct. 26, 2007

Forget the prime-time sob-fest with a marquee journalist: The new place for celebrities to talk after a traumatic event may be (where else?) on the Internet.

Owen Wilson's first interview since his September suicide attempt is set to post on MySpace.com Friday at midnight. Will he tell all? Probably not: His interviewer is filmmaker and friend Wes Anderson, who directed Wilson in "The Darjeeling Limited" and stood up for the actor when the media pried into his personal struggles.

Fox Searchlight, the studio that released "The Darjeeling Limited," currently in theaters, told ABCNEWS.com that it approached MySpace.com with the idea to do the interview. Both Fox Searchlight and MySpace.com are owned by the same parent company, News Corp.

Considering all that, Elyane Rapping, a professor of American studies and pop culture at Buffalo University, doubts that Wilson and Anderson will talk about anything but "The Darjeeling Limited." She said it's likely Fox Searchlight is using Wilson's suicide attempt as a way to drum up press for the independent film and preserve its reputation.

"I wouldn't put anything past any of those people," she said. "And I think that they have to do this because otherwise it puts it a really dark taint on the movie, that this movie was being made while someone was suicidal. If they don't say anything, then it really does call into question the ethics of the people who made this movie."

A spokesperson for MySpace.com said that the pretaped interview will be between five and 10 minutes long. According to the spokesperson, Anderson and Wilson set the agenda themselves, and Anderson directed, edited and produced the whole piece.

Picking Out the Pesky Journalist

It used to be that controversy-saddled celebrities sidled up to big-name reporters when they were ready to tell their tales, revamp their public image and revive their careers. Gary Condit came clean to Connie Chung, Monica Lewinsky cried to Barbara Walters, Britney Spears sobbed to Matt Lauer, Paris Hilton pledged philanthropy to Larry King.

Now that Internet video has come into its own, thanks to the popularity of YouTube and the advent of highly produced shows on sites like MySpace, fallen stars have a far more appealing option: Cut the pesky journalist out of the mix and tell all, on their own terms, on the Internet. It's the ultimate form of image control.

Wilson's interview will be part of MySpace.com's Artist on Artist series, which turns the traditional celebrity interview format on its head. Instead of talking to a reporter, pop culture personalities sit down and interview one another. Past pairings include Nobel Prize winner Al Gore and hip-hop artist Mos Def; filmmaker Michael Moore and R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe.

So if celebrities can craft their own interviews and broadcast them on a Web site that gets millions of hits each month, does that mean all star-chasing entertainment reporters, this one included, should pack up their belongings and go home? Not exactly.

"Whatever you think about the big network journalists, they do for the most part adhere to certain journalistic standards. With MySpace, we have no idea what this is going to be," said Bob Thompson, Syracuse University professor of popular culture. "From the sounds of it, [the Wilson interview] will have about as much credibility as any other MySpace posting."

In other words, Thompson thinks there will always be a need for tried-and-true reporters to pry into the personal lives of those in the public eye. And it's not likely that the people who relished Spears' cringe-inducing 2006 interview with Lauer will back away from their TVs anytime soon.

"You need only look at the recent Nielsen statistics that show that for the amazing year the Internet had last year, television viewing went down by exactly one minute," Thompson said.

And even if Wilson chose to open up on the Internet rather than on television, it's clear that Fox Searchlight and MySpace.com still realize the importance of TV and celebrity journalism. They gave "Entertainment Tonight" exclusive first rights to broadcast a clip of the interview on their Friday show, though they declined to let ABCNEWS.com view the interview in advance for this story. One look at the show's Web site, ETonline.com, shows that they're billing the Internet clip as a big scoop.

"It's ironic, but it makes absolutely perfect sense," Thompson said. "When all is said and done, if one does an innovative thing on the Internet, the most effective way to spread that is still the old fashioned way -- television."

In the end, whether on TV or on the Internet, celebrities do interviews for the same basic reasons: to enhance their image and promote their latest project (in Wilson and Anderson's case, "The Darjeeling Limited). Thompson said to expect nothing more or less from the MySpace interview.

"If you really wanted to get to the bottom of the story of Owen Wilson, if you really cared, you'd want an investigative reporter to do the digging," he said. "This is not real journalism. It is a combination of movie PR, damage control and image reconstruction."

Owen Wilson Talks Monkeys and Movies on MySpace

SATURDAY OCTOBER 27, 2007 12:30 AM EDT

By Tim Nudd and Marla Lehner

In his first interview since his suicide attempt in August, Owen Wilson talks about movies, monkeys and malaria – but not about his recent trouble.

Sitting down with longtime friend and frequent collaborator Wes Anderson as part of the MySpace Artist on Artist series, Wilson starts by asking Anderson why he filmed his latest movie, The Darjeeling Limited, in India. Off of that question, the two friends wryly joke about getting shots, taking malaria pills and meeting monkeys.

Asked by Anderson if he gotten trapped by some monkeys in India, Wilson answers, "Yes, I did. At first you think, gosh, monkeys, that's so kind of incredible...But they didn't have your best interests at heart. They weren't these adorable little creatures. ... They want to replace you."

The men also discuss the meaning of The Darjeeling Limited, which Anderson directed and Wilson starred in.

"I would say it's maybe, maybe my favorite," says Wilson, who adds that the movie's themes interest him. "My character says 'I want us to become brothers again like we used to be.' I really like that line and it means a lot to me."

Owen's Suicide Scare

The interview is the first Wilson has given since police responded to a medical-assistance call from his 23rd Street home in Santa Monica on Aug. 26. It was soon determined by police that Wilson had attempted suicide – news that stunned his fans, friends and family.

The following day, from his hospital bed at L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai, Wilson issued a statement saying, "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time."

On Oct. 4, Wilson made his first major public appearance since the suicide attempt, showing up briefly at the Los Angeles premiere of his and Anderson's new film, The Darjeeling Limited.

At that event, Anderson introduced Wilson as "my best friend," to great applause, and added: "I've never made a movie without him, and I hope I never have to."

Wilson and Anderson, both 38, have been friends and close working colleagues since meeting as students at the University of Texas. They have worked together on all five of Anderson's features: Bottle Rocket (1994), Rushmore (1998), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and now Darjeeling.

Wilson co-wrote the first three of those films with Anderson and had major acting parts in all of them except Rushmore.

Owen Speaks! Too Bad It Was Boring As Hell!

Owen Wilson gave his first interview to Wes Anderson on MySpace last night. Owen didn't talk about the suicide thing or his recent troubles at all. He spoke about monkeys and the movie and boring things like that.

Poor Owen looks beat! I'm getting tired just looking at him. He needs a long vacation. He should take his twin-brother, Ellen Degeneres, with him and just go away. Both have been under a lot of stress lately.

Owen silent over suicide bid

HOLLYWOOD star OWEN WILSON has given his first interview since his reported suicide bid - but remained tight-lipped on recent events.

The Zoolander star seemed slightly distracted but on the up as he appeared in a video interview with longtime friend and director WES ANDERSON as part of the MySpace Artist on Artist series.

But hopes that Wilson would shed light on his dramatic suicide attempt in August were dashed as the duo simply quizzed each other on their latest film The Darjeeling Limited, which was filmed in India.

The pair - who linked up from separate US studios - bantered as Wilson admitted that he once got trapped by monkeys.

He said: "I started to feel they didn't have your best interests at heart. They wanna replace you."

Owen Wilson Slowly Moves Back into Public Eye

MONDAY OCTOBER 29, 2007 12:10 PM EST

Owen Wilson took two baby steps back into public life this weekend – first in his MySpace interview with pal Wes Anderson, then over the weekend when he went to dinner at Mr. Chow's in Beverly Hills and attended a party Sunday night at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, PEOPLE has learned.

Wilson, 38, skipped the red carpet but joined friends inside the Louis Vuitton Gala celebrating the new Takashi Murakami art exhibition, where Kanye West also performed.

The two dined Sunday at the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica before retiring to his Malibu home.

Owen Wilson is barely getting over a traumatic experience and he's already getting into another horrendous nightmare.

Star Magazine reports that Owen Wilson is dating Jessica Simpson. The two were seen having dinner at the Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica this past weekend. After dinner they went to Owen's Malibu home.

A witness said, "He couldn't keep his hands off her." He was probably trying to cover up her gaping mouth!

The two hung out on October 16th in Austin. Both were there to shoot Willie Nelson's video.

This is not what Owen needs. Dating that annoying slag would send the sanest person over the edge.

Owen's Open-door Policy

TO prove to fellow restroom users he's not up to any funny business, Owen Wilson has taken to relieving himself with the stall door open. Despite having been spotted enjoying an occasional cocktail, Kate Hudson's ex is trying to prove he is not partaking of any other substances. At Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art on Sunday, the recently hospitalized "Darjeeling Limited" star attended a ball in honor of artist Takashi Murikami. "He was with a girl with blond highlights," said our spy, "and he went to the bathroom and peed with the door open." Wilson, who is currently in New York, has been spotted frequenting various hot spots, including the Beatrice Inn, where one reveler spotted him at 2:30 yesterday morning "surrounded by two or three younger girls." Asked about the open stall door, Wilson's rep responded, "Can you blame him? He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If he tries to protect himself from innuendo and lies, it gets used against him."

Oh please. She needs to leave him alone. Is she (or her daddy) so desperate for media hits that they need to go after a man who needs to take it slowly? I can't help but think that this was engineered.

1 November 2007 (Bang) - Owen - who attempted to commit suicide in August - decided on this unusual manoeuvre because he is paranoid people will assume he is taking drugs if he is behind closed doors.

The actor showed off his new toilet training when he attended a ball in honour of Japanese pop culture artist Takashi Murakami at Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art on Sunday (28 Oct 2007).

A source told the New York Post newspaper: "He was with a girl with blonde highlights, and he went to the bathroom and peed with the door open."

When asked about Owen's decision to relieve himself with the stall door open, the actor's representative replied: "Can you blame him? He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. If he tries to protect himself from innuendo and lies, it gets used against him."

The 'Night at the Museum' star was admitted to hospital in August after slashing his wrists. He was reported to be suffering from severe depression and bingeing on drugs and alcohol, claims which were strongly denied.

Owen, who is currently in New York, has been seen partying recently at several nightclubs. He was spotted leaving the Beatrice Inn club at 2.30am yesterday morning (31 Oct 2007).

A source revealed: "Owen was having a great time. He was surrounded by two or three younger girls all night."

Last month, Owen was seen drinking at Santa Monica's Viceroy hotel. He was said to be so intoxicated he "could hardly walk".

Owen Wilson's New York Adventures Continue

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 02, 2007 04:25 PM EDT

He's been hanging out in New York for a few days, and already Owen Wilson is becoming a familiar face at city hot spots – from lunching downtown at Café Habana to dining at Graydon Carter's Waverly Inn with Sting and Lance Armstrong.

And that was just Tuesday.

On Thursday night, the recovering star made an appearance at the Gramercy Park Hotel's swanky Rose Bar after midnight. Says an observer: "He was chilling out, having some ginger ale."

The night before, it was a Halloween party at the home of nightclub owner Chris Barish (one of the forces behind Marquee and Martini Park lounges), where he hung out with art dealer Tony Shafrazi. Wilson went as, well, himself, looking "rested" and "radiant," and generally charming as he chatted with guests and didn't drink, an observer tells PEOPLE.

Later that night, the actor was spotted hitting up Bungalow 8 – and it was a packed house, with stars like Mary-Kate Olsen, James Gandolfini and members of the Police (who performed earlier at Madison Square Garden). Also there: female dancers in police uniforms, gyrating under a tent.

So...he's not back five minutes and the hookup stories have started. Would this 'witness' be the same 'witness' that seems to rush back and tell a similar story whenever they see something like this, regarding anybody famous. Hmm...

The only funny part was reading Michael K's item, and I'm warming to Michael K a bit more these days, especially when he uses words I can recognise, like 'slag'. Anyways, I ain't aiming that at Jessica, the Dlisted piece was funny but it doesn't mean they're even anything but friends on a fun night out. Trust the magazines to turn it into a bedfest.

Kate Hudson to reunite with Owen Wilson?

MSNBC

Posted Image

When Owen Wilson attempted suicide in late August, his ex-girlfriend Kate Hudson had just appeared in a series of flirty photographs with her new beau, Dax Shepard.

Hudson has since broken up with Shepard, and folks close to the actress say its because she thinks there might be a chance to reunite with Wilson. “She’s had time to think about things,” a source close to the actress says.

She’s also distancing herself more from Shepard, who is expected at the opening of Koi at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Nov. 9. One person who won’t be there: Hudson. “Kate was invited, but she’s not going to come,” says a Koi source.

Le Call and Owen Wilson: Dating

For a period of time, it was rumored that Owen Wilson was dating Jessica Simpson.

That talk is now behind the actor. But while his new girlfriend may be a lot smarter than the aforementioned pop singer, her name is just plain stupid.

That’s right, Wilson has been spotted around New York City with Le Call.

“She is dating him,” an insider told People, referring to the model with the strange moniker and the actor who attempted suicide a few weeks ago.

The New York Post reports that Le Call and the Wedding Crashers star attended a private dinner for English artist Damien Hirst on Saturday, while they also practiced yoga together in a downtown studio earlier in the week.

A source close to the model - who is American, despite the name we can’t stop mocking - said yesterday that “Le Call is totally overwhelmed by all of this attention. She isn’t used to it. So they will be leaving town tomorrow to escape – and traveling a great distance. thehollywoodgossip

Owen Wilson and close friend Woody Harrelson have been doing some male bonding in the Peruvian jungle, as these exclusive pictures show. They have been spending time meditating, walking along the Amazon and ... stripping down to their less-than-tighty not-so-whiteys for a quick dip. (Does anyone hear banjos?)

Woody has been a constant presence by the Butterscotch Stallion's side since the troubled Wedding Crashers' star tried to commit suicide in August. And judging by the smile on his face, Woody's form of therapy appears to work wonders. The pair stayed in a teepee at the Hanaq Pacha Retreat Center, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

The back-to-basics resort, which Woody sponsors, is a yoga and spiritual retreat that has its own organic gardens that grow produce for the all-vegetarian menu. The wood and canvas malocas sleep up to four people (at a cost of $75 per person per day) and feature furnishings created by local artisans and the children of the nearby Casa de Milagros, a home for abandoned children that Woody also supports.

Sharp Eye

OWEN Wilson wasn't just collecting art at the Art Basel convention in Miami. The bachelor celeb, who was drinking only water, made one "ridiculously hot intern" blush at the Mitchell-Innes & Nash booth. The Butterscotch Stallion was also spotted at the Luhring Augustine Gallery booth "in a panic" because he couldn't find his best friend, Tony Shafrazi. Wilson later found the art dealer lounging in the upstairs VIP section of Casa Tua.

Bong Buying

Posted Image

Owen Wilson was caught bong shopping and people are afraid he has relapsed. Give me a break. A source told Life & Style, "Owen spent 20 minutes in the Green House Smoke Shop browsing the pipes and bongs. He bought one of the biggest bongs and spent almost $300 on it. He was worried that someone might have seen him coming out…He hid behind a FedEx truck for 30 seconds before darting to his car!"

Maybe it was a gift? Maybe he has sinus problems and he uses it to clear them up. I have bought dildos in stores before, that doesn't mean I used them. OK, bad analogy.

Here's Owen swimming in the cold, cold Pacific ocean yesterday in Malibu.

Owen Wilson Goes Back to Work

OK!

Actor Owen Wilson will return to work next month, filming Marley & Me with co-star Jennifer Aniston in Miami, his first film since his suicide attempt at his Santa Monica home on Aug. 26.

Since that dreadful day, Wilson has focused on recovery, dropping out of Ben Stiller-film Tropic Thunder and traveling with pal Woody Harrelson to Peru and Miami Beach.

"Miami loves when Owen is in town and we are all happy to see him back at work in our city," says Hardy Hill, VIP Ambassador of The Opium Group, which owns several nightclubs in South Beach. "Owen attracted lots of attention when he was here last, and having a bit of Hollywood in South Florida is always great. We hope to see his face at some of our venues."

Marley & Me, based on a memoir, depicts the lives of a young columnist and his wife, also a reporter, who move to South Florida and adopt an incredible puppy named Marley. Production in Miami begins Mar. 10 and the film is set for a US release on Dec. 19.

Marleys owner was on the Dog Whisperer with another dog, Marley died ya know and thing is Marley wasn't a stupid dog he just had a stupid owner.

No matter what happens to Owen Wilson he has a penis nose and it's distracting. I'm trying to watch a movie and his nose/penis is there in my face and I forget what the plot is about.

After seeing Woodys woody I feel comfortable in saying that if he ever needs to do nudes he should get a body double.
