sanlee 49 Report post Posted January 13, 2007 Braxton sings blues and sues manager over lost millions BY THOMAS ZAMBITO DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Sultry R&B singer Toni Braxton is belting out a new version of her hit "You're Makin' Me High." This one's called "You're Makin' Me Riled." Braxton sued manager Barry Hankerson in Manhattan Federal Court yesterday, accusing him of double-dealing and cheating her out of more than $10 million in potential contracts. Braxton jumped to Hankerson's Blackground Records in 2003, after splitting from Arista, where she'd sold 20 million albums. "Hankerson placed his own financial interests ahead of Braxton's and - through fraud, deception and double-dealing - induced her to leave a lucrative deal with Arista Records and enter into an exclusive recording agreement with Hankerson's wholly-owned record company," the lawsuit says. At the time the agreement was signed, Hankerson, the uncle of deceased singer Aaliyah, told the Daily News that the $10 million three-record deal was the biggest he'd ever done. "She needed to do something different to rekindle the fire," Hankerson said. The two were once close, with Hankerson's daughter Mintice a flower girl at Braxton's 2001 wedding to musician and producer Keri Lewis. But apparently the fire has fizzled. Braxton says she hasn't seen a full accounting of record sales and says Hankerson blocked her from recording a song for the 2006 World Cup and one for the movie "Diary of a Mad Black Woman." Hankerson helped launch R. Kelly's career and negotiated a $20 million, five-record deal for Braxton with Arista in 1998. But Braxton contends Hankerson drove a wedge between her and Arista, telling her the company was no longer interested in making records with her because she was pregnant. The lawsuit accuses Hankerson of fraud and breaching his fiduciary duty. He could not be reached for comment yesterday.
sanlee 49 Report post Posted February 14, 2007 Braxton Settles Suit Against Ex-Manager By SAMANTHA GROSS Associated Press Writer NEW YORK (AP) -- Toni Braxton has settled her multimillion-dollar lawsuit against her former personal manager, representatives of both parties said. Under the settlement, the 39-year-old R&B singer is free to pursue new projects following her return of a $375,000 advance to manager Barry Hankerson, Braxton representative Michael Sitrick said Tuesday. Hankerson had previously demanded an additional $1 million to provide the singer with only a partial release from her contract, Sitrick said. A Hankerson attorney, Samuel Chilakos, disputed that description of the settlement, saying he was unaware of a demand for additional funds and that the agreement limits the companies with which Braxton can work. Braxton would be responsible for paying royalties from her next album to Hankerson, both parties said. Braxton's lawsuit claimed that Hankerson owed her at least $10 million for dirty dealing that caused her to abandon a long relationship with Arista Records, a Sony BMG Music Entertainment label, for Blackground Records, the manager's record label. The lawsuit accused the manager of putting his financial interests ahead of Braxton's and inducing the singer to leave a lucrative deal with Arista through fraud, deception and double-dealing. Hankerson on Tuesday disputed those allegations. "She was dropped from Arista because of record sales," he said, adding that Braxton did not want to move to Blackground Records but "there was nowhere else for her to go." He said his relationship with the singer soured because of her insistence that she involve her husband in her albums. Braxton's 1993 debut album, "Toni Braxton," rose to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Braxton received the Grammy Award for best new artist in 1993, and she won Grammys that year and the next for best female R&B vocal performance. © 2007 The Associated Press. sanlee 49 Report post Posted October 11, 2009 Insurance Co. Claims Braxton's a Hearty Liar You better fill out insurance forms correctly or you'll get dropped from your policy -- because that's exactly why Lloyd's of London say they left Toni Braxton high and dry. Lloyd's is countersuing Toni -- who had concert cancellation insurance with the company -- after she sued Lloyd's for refusing to cut her a check when she canceled a show in 2006 due to heart problems. In the lawsuit, Lloyd's says the reason they dropped Toni ... because she failed to disclose her full medical history on the insurance application. L of L claims she kept her "pericarditis condition" -- a heart ailment -- all to herself. Lloyd's not only refuses to pay up, it wants Ms. Braxton to ante up damages.
