Chart-toppers Ludacris, Janet suffer lower sales

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rapper Ludacris scored his third No. 1 on the U.S. pop album charts Wednesday, while Janet Jackson's new release opened with her lowest numbers in almost a decade, Billboard reported.

Ludacris' "Release Therapy" (Def Jam) sold 309,000 copies in the week ended October 1, according to Nielsen SoundScan data cited by the trade publication. In 2003, "Chicken 'N Beer" debuted at No. 1 with 429,500 copies, while "Red Light District" topped the tally a year later with 322,000 copies.

Janet Jackson's "20 Y.O." (Virgin) entered at No. 2 with 296,000 copies, her smallest debut sales week since "The Velvet Rope" started at No. 1 with 202,000 in 1997. Her most recent release, 2004's "Damita Jo," bowed at No. 2 with 381,000 copies. In 2001, "All For You" opened at No. 1 with 605,000.

Tony Bennett earned his highest charting album ever with "Duets: An American Classic" (Columbia), featuring collaborations with the likes of Barbra Streisand, Bono and Elton John. It opened at No. 3 with 202,000. Bennett, who turned 80 in August, has impacted the top 10 only twice before, when 1962's "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" and 1963's "I Wanna Be Around" peaked at No. 5.

Alan Jackson celebrated his ninth top 10 album on The Billboard 200 with "Like Red on a Rose," which was produced by bluegrass queen Alison Krauss. The Arista Nashville set opened at No. 4 with 149,000 units. His last entry, March's "Precious Memories," also started at No. 4 but with 107,000.

After spending two weeks on top, Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds" (Jive) fell to No. 5 with 147,000. John Mayer's "Continuum" (Columbia) slipped one to No. 6 with 91,000 copies in its second week.

In its 35th week on the chart, Oklahoma hard-rock band Hinder's "Extreme Behavior" (Universal Republic) rose three to No. 7 with 77,000 copies. Former "American Idol" finalist Clay Aiken's "A Thousand Different Ways" (RCA) tumbled six places to No. 8 with 74,000 in its second week. Black Eyed Peas member Fergie's solo debut "The Dutchess" followed suit, also moving 74,000 copies and dropping six to No. 9.

At No. 10, pop parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic scored his best chart position ever on The Billboard 200 with "Straight Outta Lynwood" (Volcano/Zomba), which sold 73,000. The album also debuted at No. 1 on the Top Comedy Albums chart.

Other big debuts on The Billboard 200 included Christian artist Chris Tomlin's "See The Morning" (EMI CMG) at No. 15 with 47,000 copies; the Scissor Sisters' sophomore album "Ta-Dah" (Universal Motown) at No. 19 with 42,000; California post-hardcore act Saosin's self-titled debut (Capitol) at No. 22 with 35,000; Vanessa Hudgens' "V" (Hollywood) at No. 24 with 34,000; and Jerry Lee Lewis' duets set "Last Man Standing: The Duets" (Artists First) at No. 26 with 34,000.

Overall CD sales were up 2.9% from last week's count and down 3.8% compared to the same week a year ago at 9.90 million units. Sales for 2006 are down 5% compared to 2005 at 393.6 million units.

Janet to Jermaine: Aw Crap -- It's K-fed!

Filed under: Wacky and Weird, Janet Jackson

Is Kevin Federline a good luck charm? Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri seem to think so.

Mr. Britney Spears rolled up on the hip-hop couple during a hot night in Vegas this week, and did something he's not really known for -- K-fed made some money!

It all went down after the one-year anniversary party for TAO nightclub in Las Vegas. Kevin Federline ventured down at 3:30AM to play some craps, but there was a problem -- the high roller table he approached was packed and marked as 'reserved' for Janet and Jermaine. Unfortunately it seemed all K-Fed could do was watch. Luckily, Federline is tight with a member of Jermaine's entourage, who then invited the "PopoZao" singer to join the group.

TMZ spies tell us that as soon as K-Fed bought in for $1000, Janet picked up the dice. JD then announced to the table everyone that his woman had never played craps before and this would be her first roll. We are not sure if Janet rolled a 7 or 11, but a short time later the table erupted with cheers and everyone won money.

We're told that the fun only lasted roughly fifteen minutes, because the famous couple had to return to their private blackjack table. K-Fed was then proceeded to play all by his lonesome.

Janet Jackson Skunked by Ludacris for No. 1

Janet Jackson went on Oprah, she touted her weight loss and talked about her wardrobe malfunction. But in the end, none of it was enough. Janet’s “20 Y.O.” album wound up finishing second to a new CD by the relatively PR-scandal-free Ludacris.

The difference was negligible — maybe 14,000 to 20,000 copies — but it was that slim mandate that pushed Ludacris over the top with 314,000 copies sold, according to hitsdailydouble.com.

Of course, it didn’t help that Janet’s album got universally bad reviews. And once it was played, it was clear that “20 Y.O.” amounted to just a handful of songs and a lot of filler.

That’s not a good start for Janet, who needed every bit of sales revenue to overcome the disaster of her last album, "Damita Jo."

“20 Y.O.” has a lot riding on it, if only because it’s the final release in her Virgin Records contract. After this, she’s technically a free agent.

Compounding the problem: Her boyfriend, Jermaine Dupri, produced a lot of “20 Y.O.” without allowing input from Virgin. Dupri is also the head of the urban music division at that label. If “20 Y.O.” sinks, his own position will also be in jeopardy.

Believe it or not, Janet is also facing a major problem on the radio. Right now, neither of the singles from “20 Y.O.” has cracked pop formats, and “So Excited,” her annoying new single featuring 35-year-old gangsta raptress Khia, is making only a little impact on R&B/hip-hop stations.

The video and single for “So Excited” are perplexing, too: For some reason, Khia — an odious type with a long police record — is the featured player, with Janet sort of shunted to the side. It’s all very peculiar.

Janet Jackson’s Boyfriend to Beat Up Virgin Records at the Bike Rack After School

Us Weekly

Janet Jackson's boyfriend, Jermaine Dupri, is blaming his fellow execs at Virgin Records for the sorry sales of her new CD, 20 Y.O.

The New York Daily News’ Rush & Molloy reports that Dupri has threatened to quit his job as president of the Virgin Urban division because he feels label chairman Jason Flom and his team didn't market Jackson's correctly.

The CD's sales plummeted 74% in the second week, dropping from No. 2 to No. 9 on the Nielsen SoundScan chart.

"Jermaine blames Virgin for not getting it enough radio play — not working it," says an insider.

"Jermaine and Jason haven't gotten along from the start," another source adds.

But one of Flom's defenders argues, "Jason wants the CD to be a hit as much as anyone, but she didn't have the goods."

In an effort to resuscitate "20 Y.O.," Dupri is reportedly courting Mariah Carey to record a duet with Jackson for a track that would be added to a new version of the disk.

Dupri has made no secret of his displeasure with the way Virgin handled Jackson's last album, Damita Jo, telling The New York Times, "They didn't push the project."

I am so turned off by Jackson's rapid weight loss (all natural of course) and all those awful photos of her almost naked and all the proclamations of "great sex". She is all plastic, looks just like her brother and people are no longer buying what the Jacksons are selling. Run for the hills, Jermaine, Janet is yesterday's news.

Side Dish

We told you first that Janet Jackson's boyfriend, Jermaine Dupri, was bolting his job as president of Urban Music at Virgin because of his beef with chairman Jason Flom. (A source says Dupri, below, didn't bother to tell Flom he was issuing his own press release insisting he quit.) Dupri is now said to be talking with Virgin's parent, EMI, about running a new label. We also hear Island/Def Jam honcho L.A. Reid may have his eye on him. Insiders wonder whether Dupri would be cool with reporting to Def Jam chief Jay-Z, who has the job Dupri had at Virgin. "We have not had any discussions with Jermaine about coming to Island Def Jam, but we think he's extremely talented and we would love to have him here," says a rep for Reid.

PERVY 'POP-UPS'

Page Six

November 3, 2006 -- "THE Pop-Up Book of Celebrity Meltdowns" cleverly re-creates the stars' most embarrassing scandals in 3-D - but don't expect to see it on "Today" or "Good Morning America." The tome, in stores next week, was deemed too racy for depictions of Paris Hilton making her porn video, Hugh Grant getting serviced by hooker Divine Brown, and Janet Jackson baring her boob. A flack for publisher Melcher added that "Access Hollywood" axed a piece on the book "to preserve its relationship with Tom Cruise and Michael Jackson," who are shown couch jumping and baby dangling, respectively.

Are Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri headed for a split? Friends close to Janet say she is having a hard time getting over the disappointment of her latest CD, 20 Y.O. Dupri was the executive producer of the project. He changed Janet’s image from a pop superstar into a 40-year old hip hop diva. The public wasn’t buying it, and the results were disastrous. Sources feel Janet and Jermaine will tough it out for the holidays, and split up right after the Grammy Awards in February.

Fug The Cover: Janet Jackson

We've been fugging a lot of covers lately, begging the question: What is up with January magazine covers? Traditionally, January issues are thin and flat -- like a bad hair day -- presumably because mag staffers are exhausted from putting together the December issues, which generally could be used to weight down a body. You know, if you were that kind of a girl. So I guess it's not too surprising that a lot of January covers are kind of lackluster. And yet I could not let Janet Jackson's appearance on Singapore's Harper's Bazaar pass without comment:

Posted Image

To be blunt about it: Is there some law that Janet Jackson can not appear on the cover of any major magazine in pants? Remember her W cover? This is almost exactly the same concept. I mean, it's more Wholesome 80s Super Model Going For a Dip in the Pool After Some Refreshing Tab, while that one was more...freaky. But, seriously: We know, you lost a whole lot of weight. Your body looks nice. Excuse me, according to the cover, it is "killer." (And I don't think the use of the phrase "the skinny" on the cover is a coincidence, either.) But would it kill you to CONSIDER PANTS on occasion? EVEN THIN PEOPLE WEAR PANTS. We'll still KNOW that your ass is smaller than it used to be. You can PUT IT AWAY NOW.

Go Fug Yourself

Jackson 'Married' to Tyler Perry's Latest

No Madea? No problem.

February 27, 2007

Pop star, film personality and notorious breast exposer Janet Jackson will co-star in Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married."

Lionsgate, Perry's recent cinematic home, is producing the adaptation of the writer-director-producer-star's stage play. The film will be shot in a number of locations in British Columbia as well as at Perry's studio in Atlanta.

According to Variety, the film will also star Sharon Leal ("Dreamgirls") and singer Jill Scott.

The film focuses on a group of group of friends who take an annual retreat and the sexy temptress who stirs things up for the couples.

Perry's latest Lionsgate offering, "Daddy's Little Girls," has made more than $25 million to date. Like "Daddy's Little Girls," "Why Did I Get Married" doesn't feature Perry's Madea character, who helped push "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and "Madea's Family Reunion" to domestic grosses north of $50 million apiece.

Jackson may have spent recent years doing damage control for her Super Bowl halftime wardrobe malfunction, but her film credits as an actress include leads in "Poetic Justice" and "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps."

Janet Jackson learned a valuable lesson from pal Luther Vandross' death - you can't gain and lose massive amounts of weight.

Like tragic Vandross, the singer has battled weight problems throughout her career, often stunning fans with her toned image just months after appearing flabby and out of shape.

But Jackson insists her diets are always safe, carefully planned and combined with exercise programs. She says, "I think part of why Luther had a stroke was because there was so much weight, like 100 pounds, and he would fast. "His system couldn't take it.

People think they can skip working out if they can find other ways to lose weight, but you still have to be physically fit, treat your muscles properly."

SUIT AGAINST JANET OK'D

By DAREH GREGORIAN

April 11, 2007 --

Janet Jackson will have to answer questions under oath about an alleged bodyguard malfunction.

A Manhattan judge has denied a bid by the pop superstar to get a $120 million assault suit against her thrown out, and said she'll have to give a deposition in the case.

Leonard Salati, 41, claims that two of Jackson's bodyguards grabbed and choked him when he tried to pass her a note at Club Marquee in February 2004.

Jackson's lawyers argued the suit should be tossed, because she and her co-defendant boyfriend, Jermaine Dupri, had only one bodyguard working for them at the Chelsea hot spot that night, and he was a "Caucasian."

Salati had said the men who roughed him up were African-American - and one of them was 300 pounds. Lawyers for Jackson and Dupri said their bodyguard was 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds, and submitted a copy of his driver's license to back up their claim.

In a ruling made public yesterday, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Rolando Acosta let the case go forward, noting that despite Jackson's assertions to the contrary, the club - which also is being sued - said she had at least three bodyguards, and two of them were African-American.

The judge also noted the bodyguard's license does "not show that he is Caucasian. Indeed, to this court's untrained eye, he appears to be a medium dark Latino, [who] could pass as being African American."

Acosta called Jackson's lawyers' legal move an unsuccessful "Hail Mary" aimed at keeping their clients from testifying.

"Notwithstanding counsel's valiant effort to shield Ms. Jackson," the law grants "no exemptions based on celebrity status," the judge wrote, and she will have to give a deposition.

Janet Jackson Looking Happy

I'll be honest guys. When I first heard that Janet Jackson had hooked up with Jermaine Dupri, I was all, "Ugh. Seriously?" But this looks like her first relationship that didn't have to be secret and I was especially sold after I read about the quote that she'd made on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show last November:

"He likes my true self," Jackson tells DeGeneres. "It's unconditional love there, so he was always grabbing my extra stuff and looking into my eyes and telling me that he loves me and it (the weight) needs love too, and then he'd kiss me and smile at me."

I actually thought, "Aww." And it looks like these two are still going strong. It's nice to see her looking genuinely content with life. Maybe she's realizing that abs of steel aren't necessarily the answer to everything.

Somebody get a carrier pigeon to Miami STAT! Troll Dupri needs to know that it's not OK to go around showing his gut in public. Children might see this shit and it just isn't right. And yes Janet Jackson is flirting with the chunk, but that's OK. Janet always finds a way to get it lipoed...I mean work it out...

Here's their hotness in Miami over the 4th. Janet's got a shelf ass and I just almost lost my eggs from imagining Troll hitting it from the back. His gut sits perfectly over that shelf.

Did Jackson Wed Dupri in Secret?

R&B star Janet Jackson is rumored to have wed her long-term boyfriend Jermaine Dupri on Saturday.

Jackson, 41, and the hip-hop mogul, 34, married in front of friends and family in an undisclosed location on Saturday afternoon, according to gossip website MediaTakeOut.com.

Earlier this month, an insider told the site the couple were planning their nuptials imminently, saying, "Janet wants very much to keep the event private. So don't expect anything over the top. It will be small -- only have close friends and family -- and definitely no one from the media will be invited."

Jackson and Dupri started dating in 2001 and they collaborated on the singer's last album, 20 Y.O., and her upcoming 10th album.

If marriage reports are confirmed, it will be the singer's third secret marriage.

Her first marriage to James DeBarge was annulled in 1985 -- only a year after they eloped -- and Jackson divorced second husband Rene Elizondo Jr. in 1998 after seven years.

Tito and Jermaine Jackson came out to support their little sister, Janet Jackson, at the premiere of Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? last night in Los Angeles.

Posing next to her brothers just proves how much botox has gone in her damn face. Her skin looks like newborn baby skin compared to their earthquake cracked mugs.

The bod looks hot, but I bet you all the fat that was taken from her ass went into her face! If it works for her!

I can only imagine. But surgery can only do so much. She's obviously lost weight in her face. Drugs? If so, then she must goes off them because she gains back the weight, and rather quickly. I don't get it.
