Cage Close to 'Capone' Role

Now they just need a young Sean Connery

Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in "The Untouchables: Capone Rising" for Brian DePalma.

Variety rushed to confirm the Cage casting story after MTV News ran with it over the weekend. To be fair, Zap2it reported DePalma's desire to cast Cage last September, not that we yearn for credit.

Negotiations with Cage are far from a done deal.

DePalma Wants Cage for 'Untouchables' Prequel

The "Capone Rising" script, by Brian Koppleman and David Levien ("Rounders"), focuses on the events before DePalma's blockbuster "The Untouchables," specifically the interactions between Chicago mob boss Al Capone and police detective Jimmy Malone.

While promoting "The Black Dahlia" last fall, DePalma spoke to his desire to reunite the "Snake Eyes" star Cage and also mentioned the potential difficulties of casting Malone, a role that won Sean Connery an Oscar in the first film. At the time, Colin Farrell's name was mentioned and the director did nothing to contradict the possibility.

The trade paper says that "Capone Rising" will be distributed by Paramount and that its $70 million budget would come courtesy of Relativity Media.

Cage's spring has been a mixed bag. "Ghost Rider" was a savaged by critics, but still performed well at the box office. "Next" was savaged by critics and tanked. The "Leaving Las Vegas" Oscar winner is currently shooting the sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secrets."

Cage Exiting 'Capone' Rising

Gerard Butler will still star

May 25, 2007

It looks like Nicolas Cage won't be appearing in Brian DePalma's sequel to "The Untouchables" after all.

Slightly over a week after Variety reported that Cage would play Chicago mobster Al Capone in "The Untouchables: Capone Rising," the trade paper is now saying that scheduling conflicts will prevent Cage from doing the film.

While Cage is out, it was announced last week that "300" star Gerard Butler will play cop Jimmy Malone, the role that earned Sean Connery an Oscar, in the prequel.

Relativity Media is financing "Capone Rising," which has already secured domestic distribution through Paramount.

Cage had a spring hit with "Ghost Rider" and a spring dud with "Next," following last fall's relatively successful "World Trade Center" and the bomb that was "The Wicker Man." He's already completed work on a remake of "Bangkok Dangerous" and is in production on "National Treasure: Book of Secrets."

It's unclear what his next project will be or what actor will step into the young Capone role.

Cage confronts naked intruder in home

Posted Image

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A naked intruder broke into Nicolas Cage's waterfront home near Los Angeles, and put on one of his leather jackets before he was confronted by the actor, police said on Tuesday.

No one was hurt in the incident, which happened early on Monday in Newport Beach, an upscale community 45 miles south of Los Angeles. Cage, who was at home with his wife and child, asked the intruder to remove the jacket, escorted him outside and called a security guard.

Robert Dennis Furo Jr., 45, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to a first-degree burglary charge. He was ordered back to court on October 10 for a pretrial hearing.

Newport Beach police Lt. Craig Fox said Furo was "apparently" naked, and not known to Cage. There was no sign of a break-in, and he did not know what led Furo to Cage's home.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Cage paid $25 million for the property in 2005.

A tailor accused of breaking into Nicolas Cage's coastal home was charged Tuesday with residential burglary.

Robert Dennis Furo, 45, pleaded not guilty to the felony count in Orange County Superior Court, district attorney's spokeswoman Farrah Emami said.

Furo, who remained jailed on $50,000 bail, faces up to six years in state prison if convicted, Emami said. A call to the county public defender's office, which was assigned to represent Furo, was not immediately returned.

Cage called a security guard at his gated community around 1:30 a.m. Monday after he saw a man wandering inside his home and wearing one of the actor's jackets, police Lt. Craig Fox said.

The guard called police, and when officers arrived Cage had already escorted the man out of his home "without struggle," Fox said.

Cage's publicist declined to comment.

Nicolas Cage Grapples with 'The Wrestler'

Darren Aronofsky is developing the project and may or may not direct

October 12, 2007

Oscar winner Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in "The Wrestler."

The '80s period film was written by Robert Siegel and focuses on a former wrestling star named Randy "The Ram" Robinson. Down on his luck already, Robinson suffers a heart attack and is told he can never wrestle again or he'll die. Even his new life -- working at a deli, living with an aging stripper and her son -- can't sway him from a rematch with his old nemesis the Ayatollah, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sounds like commercial stuff to us.

The indie project is set up through Darren Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures, though it isn't necessarily being set up as a directing vehicle for the "Requiem for a Dream" and "The Fountain" filmmaker.

In the past year, Cage has had successes with "World Trade Center" and "Ghost Rider," while finding less lucre with "The Wicker Man" and "Next." The actor will next be seen in "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," with "Bangkok Dangerous" also in the can.

Cage, Buscemi, Morgan enlist in "G-Force"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Nicolas Cage, Steve Buscemi and Tracy Morgan will provide three of the lead voices in "G-Force" for Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

Bill Nighy and Will Arnett have joined the ranks of the on-screen actors in the live-action/CG film, which marks the directorial debut of Oscar-winning visual effects innovator Hoyt Yeatman.

The story follows a group of ultra-intelligent animal commandoes who work for a government agency trying to prevent an evil billionaire from taking over the world. Cage will play Speckles, a mole; Buscemi will portray Bucky, a hamster; and Morgan will voice Blaster, a guinea pig. Nighy will portray an industrialist, and Arnett will play an FBI agent.

Live-action leads also include Zach Galifianakis, Kelli Garner, Gabriel Casseus and Jack Conley.

Yeatman -- who won an Academy Award for visual effects on "The Abyss," as well as a Technical Achievment Award -- is "a visual effects genius, and he has worked on a number of our movies in the past," Bruckheimer told the Hollywood Reporter. "(Yeatman) came up with this idea with his son, believe it or not. We developed the screenplay. ... Now we are filming. It's pretty exciting for him -- it's his first time (directing) -- and it's exciting for us to get into a whole new medium."

“They’re out there in England now, waiting for me to get home,” the 43-year-old star told OK! at the NYC premiere of his new movie National Treasure 2: Book Of Secrets held December 13. “As soon as I’m done here tomorrow, I’m going back there to have my holiday.”

According to co-star Billy Unger, 12, Nic is kid-friendly. “He’s playful,” he tells OK! “We had lunch and Universal, and he agreed with me that the cheeseburgers were good.”

“He’s just the best with his kid,” co-star Diane Kruger says. “He’s the cutest. I don’t know if you’ve seen him, but he’s the cutest little boy.”

Although Nic didn’t answer whether more kids were on the schedule in 2008, co-star Justin Bartha says the couple is solid.

STARS TRIUMPHED AND TANKED

December 29, 2007 -- FOR some Hollywood superstars, 2007 was a spectacular year of box-office bravado. For others, it was an embarrassing case of don't ask, don't tell and try to forget.

Dough-faced Nicolas Cage was the year's biggest winner with two colossal seat fillers - the Marvel comics adaptation of "Ghost Rider," which banked $115 million domestically, and "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," which opened Dec. 21 and scooped up $78 million in five days.

Will Smith's easygoing style and good-guy persona couldn't miss. Hot off the success of "The Pursuit of Happyness" and "Hitch," his sci-fi smash "I Am Legend" opened on Dec. 14 and coaxed $160 million out of moviegoers' pockets in 12 days.

Johnny Depp was a huge draw with "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," capturing $309 million in North America. His new flick, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," kicked off with a promising five-day take of $16 million in limited release.

But plenty of superstars need new agents or better scripts. Nicole Kidman's career continued to tailspin with three clunkers: "The Invasion," which cost $80 million to make and earned $15 million in the US, the depressing drama "Margot at the Wedding," which took in a paltry $1.6 million, and "The Golden Compass," which cost $180 million and has pulled in $51 million. The big question is whether she'll be able to maintain her $17 million-$20 million per-picture price tag.

Tom Cruise took a beating. Not only was he dumped by Viacom chief Sumner Redstone, but also his ultradull antiwar picture "Lions for Lambs" (co-starring and directed by Robert Redford) earned an abysmal $15 million domestically.

As for Jennifer Lopez, she'd better stop making pictures with loved ones. She's still ridiculed for "Gigli," her megadud with one-time fiancé Ben Affleck. And she tanked this year with "El Cantante," costarring hubby Marc Anthony. It took in a paltry worldwide gross of just $7.5 million.

Lindsay Lohan's personal life was a disaster - as was her screen career. "Georgia Rule," in which she co-starred with Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman, fizzled with a pitiable domestic take of $19 million, and her junky horror flick "I Know Who Killed Me" grossed a mere $7.2 million.

Movie Exhibitors Celebrate Johnny Depp

Top 10 for 2007 also includes Will Smith and George Clooney

For the second straight year, Johnny Depp has topped a key survey naming the industry's most successful stars.

Buoyed by the blockbuster success of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" ($309 million domestic to-date) (and a bit of late-year chump change for "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" ), Depp has taken the No. 1 spot on Quigley Publishing Company's annual survey of movie exhibitors.

The survey, which dates back to 1932, asks exhibitors to list the 10 stars who generated the most revenue for their theaters. According to media reports, "I Am Legend" star Will Smith finished right behind Depp in second, followed by George Clooney, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Tom Cruise, Nicolas Cage, Will Ferrell and Tom Hanks.

The exact methodology of the survey is a little unclear, particularly given that several actors on the list -- Cruise and Cage in particular -- starred in 2007 bombs, while the stars of 2007's biggest live-action hits (Tobey Maguire of "Spider-Man 3" and Shia LaBeouf of "Transformers") are absent.

Despite the failure of "Lions for Lambs," of course, Cruise has topped the list seven times, ahead of five-time champs Hanks, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds and Bing Crosby.

This was the first time in 24 years that the exhibitor's Top 10 list failed to include a single actress.

CRANKY KATHLEEN RIPS CO-STARS

January 23, 2008 -- SOME celebrities soft-pedal their Hollywood feuds, but not Kathleen Turner, who's taken off the gloves against such stars as Nicolas Cage and Burt Reynolds.

In excerpts from her upcoming autobiography, "Send Yourself Roses," now being serialized in Britain's Daily Mail, the auburn-haired beauty says Cage was a pain on the set of "Peggy Sue Got Married," directed by his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, and for which she got an Oscar nomination.

"Everything Francis wanted him to do, he went against to show that he wasn't under his uncle's wing. Which was ridiculous. Oh, that stupid voice of his and the fake teeth! Honestly, I cringe to think about it. He caused so many problems," Turner writes. "He was arrested twice for drunk driving and, I think, once for stealing a dog. He'd come across a Chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket."

But Cage fired back through a rep, telling Page Six he had never been arrested or stolen a dog. "While I recall Kathleen Turner being a great lady and wonderful actress, the credibility of her biography and her memory is at stake . . . Fact credibility should have been exercised on [her] part," he said.

Working with Reynolds, Turner's co-star in "Switching Channels," was "my unhappiest experience as an actress . . . For whatever reason, the first thing Burt said to me was: 'I've never taken second billing to a woman,' " she writes. "Oh, every day there were nasty little digs. For instance, because of my pregnancy, the production team had given me a golf cart so I didn't have to walk around too much - and Burt even made fun of that. He was just nasty.

"He later accused me of trying to get him sacked . . . and publicly declared that the sound of my name made him want to vomit."

Of William Hurt, her co-star in "Body Heat," Turner writes: "In those days, he was pretty wild. He drank a great deal and took a lot of recreational drugs - he loved those magic mushrooms. He loved women, too; I don't know how many he went through during filming. Bill always wanted to stay in character . . . [He] thought I wasn't taking my acting seriously enough."

Reynolds' rep had no comment and Hurt's rep didn't return our e-mail.

Kathleen Dishes

Posted Image

Kathleen Turner's autobiography "Send Yourself Roses" sounds like a must-read. Kathy is dishing on a few of her former co-stars and why they were such crazy dickheads. This bitch needs to take her act on a comedy tour.

on Nicolas Cage:

"Nic was absolutely determined to prove that he wasn't there as the result of nepotism. So, everything Francis wanted him to do, he went against - to show that he wasn't under his uncle's wing. Which was ridiculous. Oh, that stupid voice of his and the fake teeth! Honestly, I cringe to think about it. He caused so many problems. He was arrested twice for drunk-driving and, I think, once for stealing a dog. He'd come across a chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket."

on Raquel Welch auditioning to replace her in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway:

"One afternoon, my male co-star came into my dressing room and said: 'You gotta come. You gotta see this, Kathleen.' We crept in through the back door of the theatre and watched as Raquel Welch did an audition. 'Well, I just don't think that Kathleen has ever been feline enough,' we heard her say. She was going around the stage with her hands like claws, hissing and making cat gestures. Oddly enough, the producers decided not to use her."

on Burt Reynolds:

"One day, we started shooting a scene that Michael Caine and I had rehearsed, where we finish each other's sentences like old married couples do. Making that dialogue work needed real skill. It had to be fast; it had to be sharp. But Burt just couldn't do it. The director finally said: 'Look, why don't we just shoot line by line?' And, idiot that I am, I shot back: 'Because it's called a scene, that's why.'

From that day on, Burt and I were sworn enemies. He later accused me of trying to get him sacked every day and publicly declared that the sound of my name made him want to vomit. I won't be rushing to work with him again, either."

I especially love the Nic Cage tidbit. Every day I see a little dog on the street that I just want to grab and take home with me. I want to play dress up for a few hours and then release it back into the wild. Nic probably still does that. It would explain where his hideous hairpieces come from.

Dognapper Not Pleased With Kathy Turner

Posted Image

Nicolas Cage is pissed off at Kathleen Turner for claiming he steals Chihuahuas. In her upcoming autobiography, Kathy says, "He'd come across a Chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket."

Nic is not happy. Methinks his plugs are too fucking tight. He needs to lighten up. He told TMZ, : "I have never been arrested for anything in my life, nor have I stolen a dog. I am reaching out to my fans -- many of whom are children -- so they know that I do not condone drunk driving or theft. The reason why you've never seen a mug shot of me is because it does not exist."

Kathy did Nic a favor. She actually made him sound interesting. He owes her one. What kids are fans of Nicolas Cage? Probably the same kind of kids that plot to take down Hannah Montana.

Nic Cage Sues Kathleen Turner for Claiming He Stole a Chihuahua

US WEEKLY

On Friday, Nic Cage’s attorney began libel proceedings against Kathleen Turner at London’s High Court.

Cage, 44, is suing Turner, his former Peggy Sue Got Married co-star, 53, for writing in her new autobiography Send Yourself Roses that the actor was busted for two DUIs and once stole a Chihuahua.

Turner writes, “He caused so many problems. He was arrested twice for drunk-driving and, I think, once for stealing a dog. He'd come across a chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket.”

But in a statement issued last month, Cage fired back: "I have never been arrested for anything in my life, nor have I stolen a dog.”

Cage's lawyer tells New York's Daily News, "If he doesn't get a retraction, he intends to go full speed ahead with litigation in the U.S."

Turner Apologizes to Cage Over Book Claims

Kathleen Turner has apologized to Nicolas Cage for "causing distress" by accusing the actor of drink-driving and theft in her new autobiography. Cage began libel proceedings against his Peggy Sue Got Married co-star in London's High Court last week after claiming her new book Send Yourelf Roses was full of false claims about him. In the book, Turner alleges Cage went to great lengths to disobey his director uncle Francis Ford Coppola on the set of their 1986 movie, adding he found himself in trouble with police while filming. But the 53-year-old actress insists she had no intention for the contents of her book to upset Cage, or anybody else, and is deeply sorry for any hurt caused. She says, "I guess what I can say is I'm truly sorry if I caused distress or harm, because one thing is for sure - I never, ever intended to do that. This is what I remember, these are my thoughts and (they were) certainly not intended to damage anyone else."

I never, ever intended to do that. This is what I remember, these are my thoughts and (they were) certainly not intended to damage anyone else."

"These are my thoughts", what in the hell does that mean?

Either it is true or it isn't.

Either or you stand by what you wrote or you don't.

Maybe they weren't intended to damage anyone, but they were designed to grab attention (and sell books).

I will say it again: TACKY.

CAGE VS. IRS

Page Six

February 20, 2008 -- HAS Nicolas Cage been reading the Wesley Snipes handbook on taxes? The actor used his LA-based company, Saturn Productions, "to wrongly write off $3.3 million in personal expenses," and is now fighting the IRS on payment, Forbes.com reports. Cage's business manager called the extravagancies - which reportedly included "limos, meals, gifts, travel" and his Gulfstream jet - "security needs." Cage has filed a US Tax Court lawsuit disputing $814,000 in taxes and penalties while Saturn is refusing to pay the IRS $988,000.

Actress Byrne joins Cage in sci-fi thriller

Rose Byrne, co-star of FX's legal drama "Damages," will join Nicolas Cage in the sci-fi thriller "Knowing." The project is set to begin shooting later this month in her native Australia.

Byrne will play the daughter of a woman who buried a 1962 time capsule bearing the dates of the assassinations of historical figures, the hotel fire death of the wife of a professor (Cage) and an imminent world apocalypse. After the professor discovers its contents and alerts her, the initially skeptical Byrne begins remembering strange incidents from her childhood. Alex Proyas ("I, Robot") will direct.

Byrne, received a Golden Globe nomination this year for her supporting turn as an ambitious young lawyer in "Damages," which stars Glenn Close. After its first season wrapped last fall, FX ordered two additional seasons. Byrne's feature credits include "Marie Antoinette" and "28 Days Later."

Summit Entertainment, in theaters with the Christina Ricci drama "Penelope," will fully finance and distribute "Knowing."

Turner apologises for Cage libel

BBC NEWS

US actor Nicolas Cage has accepted a public apology from Kathleen Turner over claims made in her autobiography.

The actress, UK publisher Headline and Associated Newspapers, which extracted the book in the Daily Mail, have also made a substantial donation to charity.

Cage took action against Turner after she alleged he was arrested twice for drunk-driving while they were making the 1986 film Peggy Sue Got Married.

Turner also alleged he was arrested for stealing a Chihuahua.

Cage accused Turner of "defamation, libel and slander" by including the allegations in her recent book, Send Yourself Roses: My Life, Love and Leading Roles.

The action was brought in the UK because an extract of Turner's book was reprinted in the Daily Mail and on its website.

'Gratified'

Cage's UK solicitor Simon Smith said the Oscar-winning actor was "extremely pleased" with the outcome of the case "since he has never been arrested for drink driving, dog theft or anything else".

"As an actor who stars in many family-friendly films and who has a young child and teenager of his own, Mr Cage was understandably upset at having been wrongly depicted as condoning that sort of reckless, dangerous and criminal behaviour."

The actor, he continued, was "gratified that the defendants have done the right thing by acknowledging their errors and making amends".

The donation will be made to the National Adult Protective Services Foundation, a US charity which benefits vulnerable adults.

The Daily Mail has agreed to publish an apology and remove the article from its website.

Headline has also agreed to insert a correction and apology into copies of Turner's book.

Cage: Who's Bad?

Nicolas Cage is headed to the dark side.

The City of Angels star is set to headline a remake of Abel Ferrara's 1992's pulp classic, The Bad Lieutenant, that will be helmed by famed German auteur Werner Herzog.

Per Variety, the 44-year-od Cage will slink into the role originated by Harvey Keitel, an NYPD detective who investigates the rape of a young nun all the while seeking forgiveness for a litany of his own sins, including heavy drug use, gambling and cavorting with prostitutes.

The original Lieutenant, directed by Ferarra from a screenplay he cowrote with Zoë Lund, was slapped with an NC-17 rating for its explicit language and hardcore sex scenes, like the one in which Keitel's lapsed Catholic copper masturbates in front of a teenage girl. The redo was written by Billy Finkelstein, a vet of small-screen police dramas like NYPD Blue and Law & Order.

Cage is currently in Australia shooting the time-capsule thriller Knowing with Rose Byrne. Cameras roll on The Bad Lieutenant this summer.
