McCartney's ex-wife awarded almost $50 million

Paul McCartney's ex-wife claims nearly $50M payout in divorce ruling

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Heather Mills, the estranged wife of Paul McCartney, was granted nearly 25 million pounds ($50 million) in her divorce proceedings with the former Beatle, she said Monday.

Mills and McCartney, pictured before divorce proceedings, married in 2002 and have a young daughter.

Mills said she will not appeal the award, but she will appeal the publication of the hearing transcript, which she said McCartney has asked for.

In an 11-minute statement to reporters outside the High Court after the verdict, Mills said she was pleased that the bitter divorce hearings had ended.

"I'm so glad it's over and it was an incredible result, in the end, to secure my and my daughter's future, and that of all the charities that I obviously plan on helping," said Mills, dressed in a khaki, green and blue suit with a bright red shirt.

Mills has established a career as a campaigner and charity worker since losing a leg in a road accident in 1993. Watch background to McCartney Mills divorce case »

Judge Hugh Bennett awarded Mills, who represented herself, 23.7 million pounds ($47.4 million). She said McCartney had proposed 15.8 million pounds ($31.6 million).

The judgment included 35,000 pounds ($70,000) a year for the couple's 4-year-old daughter, Beatrice. Mills said she was unhappy with that amount because it isn't enough for school tuition, private security, or first-class airfare.

"He likes her to fly five times a year on holiday," Mills said of McCartney. "It's 17,000 (pounds) for two people return (round-trip) first class, so that's obviously not meant to happen for her anymore. It's very sad."

Mills said she would appeal to stop the publication of the entire judgment because it contains private details about Beatrice and she doesn't want them released. The judge has granted permission for the litigants to speak publicly, she said.

Mills said that as a "litigant in person," or a litigant representing herself, the system worked against her at every turn.

"These people are in a club," she said. "It's like they want to stay together and they don't want to see a litigant in person doing well."

She said the judge did not agree with her on important details, including how long the couple lived together or even McCartney's personal wealth, which she estimated at 800 million pounds ($1.6 billion). She said the judge estimated it to be half of that.

"I won't go into all the horrific details of what happened because I'm just glad it's over," Mills said. "I really hope now that me and my daughter can have a life and not be followed every single day, and that is why I've come out -- to give it closure."

McCartney and Mills failed to agree on a settlement ending their four-year marriage in divorce hearings last month, leaving the judge to decide the terms.

McCartney and Mills married in 2002 after meeting at a charity event.

At the time of their split in 2006, they described it as amicable, despite widespread reports of a tempestuous relationship between McCartney and the former model.

Mills has since lashed out at news media coverage of the divorce, which she said has been unfair to her and driven her to the brink of suicide.

In a television interview last year, Mills said she had endured "18 months of abuse, worse than a murderer or pedophile."

Monday's divorce settlement fell short of the previous record for a litigated divorce settlement in Britain. An award of £48 million ($96 million) was handed down last year, according to British divorce lawyer Julian Lipson.

Heather Mills launches astonishing court rant after winning £24.3m divorce payout

Last updated at 19:15pm on 17.03.08

Heather Mills this afternoon announced that she has accepted a £24.3million divorce deal before launching an attack on Sir Paul McCartney, his lawyers and the legal system.

Ms Mills, 40, speaking on the steps of the High Court, said she was hitting out after the judge in the case ruled that details of the divorce should be made public.

It emerged that she had sought nearly £125million and that McCartney had offered her £15.8million.

Heather Mills launched an astonishing tirade after securing £24.3 million in her divorce settlement in London today

Ms Mills said she was “very, very happy” with the settlement and a summary of the judgment was published today.

But the former model will appeal against Mr Justice Bennett's plans to release it in full at a further hearing tomorrow.

Launching a non-stop stream of criticism, Ms Mills raged against Sir Paul, the judge and McCartney's lawyer Fiona Shackleton.

She said: “Fiona Shackleton has very sadly handled this case in the worst manner you could ever imagine. She has called me many, many names before meeting me when I was in a wheelchair.”

Ms Mills also launched an angry outburst against her husband's victory on where their daughter would live and how much she would get each year.

“Beatrice gets £35,000 a year. She is meant to travel B-class when her father travels A-class.

“Paul has always wanted Beatrice to go to a state school. He insisted that he wanted us to move to that area [East Sussex] - £35,000 includes. £17,000 for school fees.”

“He tried to get our daughter with joint residency, even though we had gone 50-50. In that way he has got everything he wanted, but that's what powerful people get.”

Ms Mills complained about the judge's assessment of her husband's wealth.

“He also said that Paul is only worth £400 million. Everyone knows that he has been worth £800 million for the last 15 years.

"Paul has always wanted it public because he wants to look like generous Sir Paul."

“I was locked out of every home. I really hope now that me and my daughter can have a life and not be followed every day. Apart from one television thing I have stayed quiet for 21 months. If the judgment had been kept private I would not be out here speaking.”

She added: “I can't leave England. Believe me if I tried to go he'd have an injunction on me in a second.”

Describing herself as a "campaigning girl" she called on people to represent themselves in court but urged couples to do their best to resolve their problems immediately.

The former model addressed the media on the steps of London's High Court today

She said: "I'm so glad it's over, it was an incredible result in the end to secure mine and my daughter's future and that of all the charities that I obviously plan on helping and making a difference with - because you know it has been my life for 20 years.

"Obviously the court do not want a litigant in person to do well, it's against everything that they ever wish, so when they write the judgment up they're never going to make it look in favour.

"But all of you that have researched know that it was always going to be a figure between £20 and £30 million, Paul was offering a lot less than that, which you'll see in the judgment, and very much last minute to put me and Beatrice sadly through this ... incredibly sad."

Asked if she thought Sir Paul had been "cruel", she said: "I can't say that for the sake of my daughter but my sister does."

She added: "I'm going to go and be with my daughter because I took so much time away from her."

Paying tribute to her sister's support, she added: "Every time I look at her, I want to cry."

Sir Paul left the court quickly, saying simply "thank-you" as he waved to the cameras.

The judge decided Sir Paul should pay a lump sum of £16.5million together with her assets of £7.8million including her homes.

“This means she exits her marriage with total assets of £24.3million inclusive of a deemed figure of £500,000 referable to her overspending in the period of separation,” said the judge.

The judge said that the couple had met in 1999 and started a relationship but did not live together until the start of their marriage on 11 June 2002.

He found against the claim that they had co-habited from March 2000.

The couple separated in April 2006 so the marriage lasted less than four years.

The judge also refused permission for both Ms Mills and Sir Paul to raise any issues alleging bad conduct on the grounds that it was “irrelevant”.

Earlier, instead of rubber-stamping the deal, the couple had spent another morning behind closed courtroom doors, thrashing out the smallprint.

McCartney was first to arrive at the Royal Courts of Justice, accompanied by his solicitor Miss Shackleton. He strode purposefully into Court 34 at around 10.15.

Minutes later Ms Mills was driven in through the court's main gates.

She was flanked by her sister Fiona, personal trainer Ben Amigoni and a minder.

Ms Mills smiled at waiting reporters, saying: “I'm sorry, I can't make any comment.”

A case scheduled to be heard first in the wood-panelled Court 34 was moved aside to allow discussions to get under way at 10.30.

Divorce costs former Beatle McCartney $48.7 million

Mills Says She Will Appeal Against Publication of Details

By Paul Majendie

Mar 17, 2008

LONDON (Reuters) - A British court ordered former Beatle Paul McCartney on Monday to pay his estranged wife Heather Mills 24.3 million pounds ($48.7 million) after an acrimonious divorce battle.

The settlement was only a fifth of the sum she had sought but she still ended up with the equivalent of about $34,000 for each day of her four-year marriage to the pop icon.

Speaking after the judge's ruling, Mills said: "I am so glad it is over. It is an incredible result in the end.

"We are very, very pleased," she added. "I am so, so happy with it." McCartney declined to comment.

McCartney, 65, married the former model and charity campaigner Mills, 40, in 2002 but they separated four years later, blaming media intrusion into their private lives. They have a daughter, Beatrice, aged four.

Following one of the most bitter divorce battles in showbusiness history, the couple failed to reach an agreement after six days in court last month, leaving the judge to set the final figure.

Mills criticized McCartney's lawyer Fiona Shackleton, accusing her of handling the case badly.

She said Shackleton, who also represented heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles in his divorce from Princess Diana, "has called me many, many names before even meeting me, when I was in a wheelchair."

Mills, who sacked her lawyer and represented herself in court, urged would-be divorcees to do the same. "You can be a litigating person," she said. "You'd save yourself a fortune."

Justice Hugh Bennett, giving details of the settlement, said: "She sought an award of almost 125 million pounds. Sir Paul proposed the wife should exit the marriage with assets of 15.8 million pounds inclusive of any lump sum award.

"The judgment decided that the husband should pay the wife a lump sum of 16.5 million pounds, which together with her assets of 7.8 million pounds means that she exits her marriage with total assets of 24.3 million pounds."

The split was fought out under a remorseless media spotlight with McCartney, a founder of the world's most famous pop group, pitted against the outspoken Mills, target of lurid tales in the press about her colorful past.

The court ruled that the judgment be made public, but stayed publication pending Mills' appeal against it being made public.

Mills, speaking to a phalanx of reporters on the steps of London's High Court, said she was appealing "because the judgment involves private secure matters of my daughter."

Referring to what their daughter would receive, Mills said: "Beatrice only gets 35,000 pounds a year. So obviously she's meant to travel B Class while her father travels A class, but obviously I will pay for that."

Asked if she now planned to move abroad, Mills said: "I can't leave England. I always wanted to keep my daughter near her father. Believe me if I tried to go, he would have an injunction on me in a second."

Riiiiight. She became a litigating person only after she'd had attorneys working on this case for her for at least two years. Stupid cow. If people take her advice seriously, they'll end up in a world of hurt and with very little money to show for it. In divorcing billionaire Paul McCartney, she was obviously going to get a decent settlement. Other litigants won't be so lucky. Mills wouldn't have been that lucky without the prior work and case files of all the lawyers she fired.

God, I can't stand this skank. It's good to know that she can't move out of England. She'd make a beeline for Hollywood and we have enough golddigging bitches out here already. We're full up!

Heather Has $$$ -- Allred Has Heather

Posted Mar 18th 2008 10:18AM by TMZ Staff

Freshly flush with serious dough, Heather Mills has decided to spend some of that hard earned cash by hiring ediamay orewhay attorney Gloria Allred to rep her in the States.

In a statement to the media, Allred says she is "honored to represent Ms. Mills because she respects Ms. Mills' courage throughout her difficult and painful divorce."

Allred has repped others who didn't seem to need lawyers as well -- Scott Peterson's mistress Amber Frey and Britney Spears' former bodyguard. Oh yeah, and Michael Jackson once told her to go to hell.

Reports: Heather Soaks Paul's Divorce Attorney

By Kate Stroup and Ellen Tumposky

Heather Mills had more than just cash to splash Monday as she allegedly threw water at Paul McCartney's lawyer during the $50-million divorce proceedings.

Mills claimed she was "so, so happy," with the decision, but events inside the courtroom seem to tell a different story.

According to various accounts in the British press, Mills allegedly lashed out at McCartney's high-powered attorney, Fiona Shackleton, pouring a glass of water over the solicitor's head.

The U.K.'s Daily Mirror declared "Wet It Be" on its front page, breathlessly recounting the splash-and-dash. "[Heather] was so angry, she tipped a glass of water over Fiona Shackleton's head, leaving her with soaking wet hair," one insider told the paper. "Everyone was stunned. That kind of behavior is just not acceptable."

Indeed, pictures from the courthouse show Shackleton arriving Monday morning with a bouncy blonde bouffant and leaving at around 2 p.m. with damp locks slicked back behind her ears.

When the BBC asked Mills about the alleged attack, the Dancing with the Stars vet would only say that Shackleton had been "baptized in court." (Shackleton's office at Paynes Hicks Beach had no comment.)

Mills certainly wasn't pulling any punches when she discussed the attorney (who famously represented Prince Charles in his divorce from Diana) in Monday's post-ruling rant on the steps of the courthouse.

"[shackleton has] very sadly handled this case in the worst manner you can ever, ever imagine," Mills said. "She has called me many, many names before even meeting me."

David Rosen – who has been working for Mills as a solicitor advocate – told reporters Tuesday, "I think [Mills] felt Fiona Shackleton had behaved ... in an undignified way." Although he didn't "quite see" Monday's incident, Rosen added, "I just heard the trickle."

Mills suffered another setback in court Tuesday morning, when she lost her bid to keep the divorce settlement under wraps. The full 58-page judgment was released soon afterward.

Mills ‘less than impressive witness,’ judge says

Appeals court releases judgment from McCartney divorce proceeding

msnbc.com

LONDON - Heather Mills was a less than candid court witness whose $250 million divorce claim was exorbitant, a judge said in his ruling on her divorce from Paul McCartney.

The judgment by Hugh Bennett was released Tuesday, after a court rejected Mills’ attempt to block publication.

On Monday, Bennett awarded Mills a $48.6 million divorce settlement after her four-year marriage to the former Beatle. Mills had sought almost $250 million, while McCartney had offered $31.6 million, including Mills’ own assets.

In his ruling, the judge said Mills’ claim “is and was unreasonable, indeed exorbitant.”

He also said Mills’ evidence was “not just inconsistent and inaccurate but also less than candid. Overall she was a less than impressive witness.”

McCartney’s lawyers didn’t object to publication, but Mills claimed details in the ruling could compromise the security of her 4-year-old daughter Beatrice.

“Miss Mills believes her daughter will be put in real danger. It is most disturbing,” said lawyer David Rosen, who represented Mills in court. She did not attend the hearing.

McCartney didn’t comment after Monday’s three-hour private hearing, but Mills, 40, emerged for an impromptu news conference on the courthouse steps — railing against McCartney’s lawyer, Fiona Shackleton.

Shackleton, who represented Prince Charles in his divorce from Princess Diana, emerged from court Monday with a wet head, reportedly from a glass of water that Mills had dumped on her. Mills told reporters Shackleton had been “baptized in court.” McCartney’s representatives declined to comment.

“She has called me many, many names before even meeting me when I was in a wheelchair,” said Mills, whose own legal team, in an ironic twist, was led by Princess Diana’s divorce lawyer until she fired them in November.

Mills walked away from court with a settlement worth about $34,000 for every day of her marriage to the 65-year-old McCartney. But it was only a fifth of what she had sought and a fraction of McCartney’s $800 million fortune.

Mills declared that she was “very, very, very pleased.”

“All of you that have researched know that it was always going to be a figure between 20 and 30 million” pounds, a visibly agitated Mills said Monday. “Paul was offering a lot less than that. ... So we’re very, very, very pleased.”

The settlement included a lump sum of $33 million, plus the assets Mills currently holds worth $15.6 million.

Some legal experts were surprised the former model did not get more.

“In the scheme of things, it’s quite surprisingly low,” said Patricia Hollings, a divorce specialist with London law firm Finers Stephens Innocent. “It is only offering her about 6 percent of his assets. In terms of high-wealth cases it’s very low.”

McCartney also was ordered to pay $70,000 a year for Beatrice, and to pay for her nanny and school fees.

Mills said that was a paltry amount. “She’s obviously meant to travel B class while her father travels A class,” she said.

The settlement doesn’t rank with the most expensive celebrity divorces. Basketball star Michael Jordan and singer-songwriter Neil Diamond both had to pay out about $150 million to settle their divorces, according to Forbes magazine.

British divorce settlements are generally lower than those in the U.S. But Mills’ settlement is only about half of the biggest contested divorce settlement in British history — the 48 million pounds (about $90 million at the time) that insurance tycoon John Charman was ordered to pay his ex-wife in 2006.

Mills and McCartney went to court last month to decide on her share of his fortune, which had been estimated at as much as $1.6 billion. However, the judge found that McCartney’s total worth was about $800 million.

Now that the case is over, Mills implored the media to just let it be.

“And I really hope now that me and my daughter can have a life and not be followed every single day and that is why I’ve come out, to give it closure,” she said.

I can't believe that she wsan't held in contempt of court over soaking pau;'s lawyer with water! In America she would have been locked up and wouldn't have been gicven the opportunity to rant and rave on the courtroom steps afterwards. She would have been in jail. Confused why the British court didn't hold her in contempt...can't be all that different than the laws here in America.

Another note..shouldn't we merge this thread with the Stella and Paul McCartney thread??

Not to defend the peg-legged skank or anything, but I believe she was in a wheelchair for a short time early on in the split. Her leg was being adjusted or refitted or whatever the procedure is that people have to go through with their prosthetics from time to time.

Anyway, if lawyer Fiona Whatshername called Ol Pegleg names, good. Mills will be a figure of ridicule and contempt for the rest of her life. She also won't be giving that money to charity the way she said she would. She's already crying poor over the settlement, bitching about airfare for the kid. Stupid cow.

I'm glad the judge publicly called her an incompetent and a liar. B)

Heather Just Won't Give Up

HEATHER Mills isn't satisfied with her $48.6 million divorce settlement from Paul McCartney - so the peg-legged money-grubber has been "calling around British magazines and television shows to sell her exclusives." One insider said Mills is demanding 1 million British pounds - or slightly more than $2 million - to not only talk, but share intimate photos and tape recordings she made of the ex-Beatle without his knowledge. Mills is also said to be pitching to American networks, which could get around their "we don't pay for news" proclamations by paying for her pictures and tapes. "She's greedy," said a person who knows of Mills' dealings. "She should just go away, but she loves the spotlight and the attention." Yesterday, the judge on the case, Hugh Bennett, castigated Mills as a greedy fantasist and a "less than candid witness" whose claims were "devoid of reality." "Extra" reports Mills will exercise her taste as a judge of the Miss USA pageant April 11 from Las Vegas.

Did Mills Really Give Away "Dancing" $$?

TMZ

Before Heather Mills toppled her way off "Dancing with the Stars," she had talked about donating money from the show to animal rights groups.

But, as FOX News points out, Mills actually gave less than half of her $220,000 fee to VIVA USA. Of course, that's still $100,000 – plenty of cash – but she had made it pretty clear that she was donating all of the dough to VIVA before the show.

The revelation was part of the scathing 56-page judgment that the judge in her divorce-settlement case made two days ago.

Paul McCartney Remembers Linda on 10th Anniversary of Her Death

People

By Kate Stroup

Posted Image

Just weeks after finalizing his $50 million divorce from Heather Mills, Paul McCartney is making headlines again – this time for an emotional interview about his first wife, Linda, who succumbed to breast cancer 10 years ago.

McCartney tells Britain's Sunday Times Magazine he can still recall their first meeting, "probably 40 years [ago], at the London nightclub Bag O' Nails.

"There was an immediate attraction between us," he said in the article, which coincides with an exhibition of Linda McCartney's photographs at the James Hyman gallery in central London.

His pick-up line? "My name's Paul. What's yours?" McCartney told the paper. "I think she probably recognized me. It was so corny, but I told the kids later that, had it not been for that moment, none of them would be here."

Fond Memories

The 65-year-old former Beatle has recently been spotted on a Caribbean getaway with American businesswoman Nancy Shevell, but it's obvious he still cherishes his memories of Linda, a photographer and cookbook author, who died at age 56.

"When we went for a drive, Linda always wanted to get lost," he reminisced, adding that she was "always very beautiful." "We would go down to the most obscure places, have a great time, find a little tearoom or a riverbank. She taught me little things like that, to relax and be down to earth."

He also seemed to make pointed comparisons between Linda and Mills, whose efforts to court the media often backfired. "She didn't go on TV and say, 'This is who I am – hello' and try to ingratiate herself," he said. "She was just a great person to hang out with: very funny, very smart and very talented ... Her priorities were private rather than public."

On the 10th anniversary of her death, McCartney also recalled Linda's courageous final days. "She didn't know she was dying," he said of his first wife, who had already had chemotherapy. "I talked it over with the doctor and he said, 'I don't think she would want to know. She is such a strong, forward-thinking lady and such a positive girl that I don't think it would do any good.' "

In fact, Linda remained active right up to her death on April 17, 1998. "She was fighting right up to the end," McCartney said. "Even on the day before she dies, she was out on horseback. She loved riding so much. Sometimes she'd get up on her a horse and I'd say, 'You don’t want to get down, do you?' She preferred it up there than on the ground."

Paul McCartney De-Heathers Apartment

Sir Paul McCartney is gutting his New York apartment to remove all traces of ex-wife Heather Mills.

The Beatles legend - who reached a £24.3 million divorce settlement with Heather last month - was inspired to make a fresh start after enjoying a romantic Caribbean break with millionairess Nancy Shevell.

A source said: "The holiday with Nancy has done him the world of good and he wants to put the heartache behind him and move on. He's also planning a fresh start for his house in New York. First he's going to get rid of Heather's things.

"I don't know whether that means he is going to just dump them or if he will send them to her. Knowing Paul, he will return them to her with a polite note."

Paul has already hired a team of builders to renovate his New York property - which is situated near Central Park - and has been asking Nancy for her creative input.

The pal added to Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "He now plans to get the interior decor just so. He has also asked Nancy for her suggestions on any changes he should make."

Mccartney Wants The World To Go Veggie

Rock legend SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY wants the world to stop eating meat, and save the environment at the same time.

MCCartney made the appeal during an interview with animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The former Beatle, a vegetarian himself, claims the land and water used up by the meat industry is a drain on the environment.

He said, "The biggest change anyone could make in their own lifestyle would be to become vegetarian.

"I would urge everyone to think about taking the simple step to help our precious environment and save it for the children of the future."

McCartney urges vegetarianism to fight climate ills

NEW YORK, April 21 (Reuters) - Former Beatle Paul McCartney is urging the world to go vegetarian in a bid to fight global warming and is surprised more green groups don't promote it.

In an interview with the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), McCartney said the global meat industry was a major contributor to global warming. A transcript of the PETA interview was given to Reuters.

"The biggest change anyone could make in their own lifestyle would be to become vegetarian," McCartney, a longtime vegetarian and advocate of vegetarianism, said. "I would urge everyone to think about taking this simple step to help our precious environment and save it for the children of the future."

McCartney says the amount of land and water used to maintain the meat industry makes it a major contributor to climate change and complains that most environmental groups do not list vegetarianism as one of their top priorities.

"It's very surprising that most major environmental organizations are leaving the option of going vegetarian off their lists of top ways to curtail global warming," he said.

A 2006 United Nations report found that cattle-rearing generated more greenhouse gases than transportation.

Paul McCartney Urges 'Vegetarians' To Give Up Fish

By WENN

Paul McCartney is calling on fish-eating vegetarians to give up all seafood for Earth Day today. The meat-free former Beatle has issued a statement urging the world to go veggie for the greenest day of the year-- and he's also targeting those who call themselves vegetarians, and then eat fish.

McCartney wants to remind everyone that the commercial fishing industry is killing off fish species which are vital to the environment.

He says, "Unfortunately, many people seem to think that vegetarians eat fish, but this is not so. When you consider the overfishing, the marine pollution, and the huge damage to our precious oceans that are caused by commercial fishing, it becomes obvious that a (complete) vegetarian lifestyle would greatly improve our environment and help to save our oceans."

Paul McCartney Sparks Engagement Rumors?

By WENN

Paul McCartney has sparked engagement rumors after he was spotted shopping at a top London jeweler. The former Beatle was snapped by photographers shopping at exclusive New Bond Street store S.J. Phillips yesterday - fueling speculation he is to propose to American heiress Nancy Shevell.

The 65-year-old recently returned from a romantic Caribbean vacation with Shevell after settling his $48.6 million divorce from estranged wife Heather Mills last month. The pair was spotted getting close on the beach of a private resort - splashing out on a $12,000 -a-night villa, enjoying hand-in-hand walks along the coast, a sailing trip and frolics in the sea.

And now, the Mull of Kintyre hit-maker seems to have taken the relationship to another level with his jewelry store jaunt. S.J. Phillips confirmed McCartney was shopping at the store - but refused to say what the singer purchased during his visit.

Paul McCartney Worth $1 Billion

Paul McCartney is worth $1 billion - $200 million richer than his divorce hearing was told, according to a new rich list. The former Beatle was estimated to be worth $800 million, according to documents filed at London's High Court during his divorce to Heather Mills.

However, according to the Sunday Times Rich List, the court undervalued Paul's back catalogue, image rights and recordings. It also failed to take into account the will of his first wife, Linda, who died in 1998. The list puts his true wealth at $1 billion.

A spokesman for McCartney declined to comment on the list, which will be published on Sunday.

Paul McCartney granted divorce decree

Sometimes love isn't all you need. A judge in London granted a preliminary divorce Monday to former Beatle Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. If no one objects, the divorce will be final in six weeks.

Mills, 40, will emerge from the rancorous divorce with a settlement of $47.5 million but a reputation damaged by her televised outbursts against McCartney.

Neither McCartney nor Mills was in court Monday, which might have been a good thing. At the end of a hearing in March, Mills stole the show by emptying a pitcher of water on the head of McCartney's lawyer, Fiona Shackleton.

"Mrs. Shackleton said something under her breath so I cleansed and baptized her," Mills said afterward. "I thought she looked fantastic — I thought it did her the world of good."

Mills will retain custody of the couple's 4-year-old daughter, Beatrice. McCartney will retain the bulk of his fortune, estimated by the court at $880 million.

The split makes McCartney, at age 65, the last of The Beatles to get a divorce.

John Lennon left his first wife, Cynthia, for Yoko Ono. Ringo Starr and his first wife, Maureen, divorced after 10. And George Harrison's marriage to Patti Boyd ended after 11 years.

But McCartney's marriage to the former Linda Eastman endured 19 years, until her death in 1998.

He married Mills, whose left leg was amputated below the knee after a 1993 motorcycle accident, in an Irish castle in 2002. They separated four years later.

Last year, Mills claimed in interviews that McCartney had failed to protect her and their daughter from slander, death threats and other abuse, and she accused the media of persecuting her.

In November, she said she had been "treated worse than a murderer or a pedophile," despite years of work for land mine victims and animal welfare charities.
