Educating Dita

She is newly single, and keen to set the record straight. Dita Von Teese, the world's most glamorous 'demure stripper', speaks frankly for the first time about the lessons she's learnt from life with – and without – the shock-rocker Marilyn Manson. By Kimberly Cutter

The world around Dita Von Teese may be on fire with speculation about her impending divorce from the 'death rocker' Marilyn Manson after just over a year of marriage – not to mention the feverish, vampire-themed courtship that Manson is rumoured to be having with a young actress – but you'd never know it to look at her.

Von Teese is part of a long history of pin up girls who were dancers as well

Sitting on a sofa at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles, with big diamond bracelets stacked up on her bird-like wrists and her long blue-black hair moulded carefully around her supernaturally white cleavage, Von Teese, 34, looks more like some rare collectable china doll than an actual person. It's almost a surprise when she turns her head and speaks.

But speak she does. Demurely and cautiously at first, but later with raw, clear-eyed sadness and startling frankness about the demise of her five-year relationship with the absinthe-drinking 'Anti-Christ Superstar' and his party-hard lifestyle that she says drove them apart.

Up until now the wasp-waisted Von Teese has been almost as famous for her coy, ladylike discretion as she has for bathing on stage in a crystal-studded champagne glass. Indeed, Von Teese – who earned almost £500,000 last year and is recognised as the most celebrated burlesque dancer in the world – initially agreed to be interviewed on the condition that I not ask her about Manson or the divorce. But a week after our first meeting she calls me late at night from Seoul, Korea, and says she has changed her mind.

'I want to set the record straight about some things,' says Von Teese, who has just read the April issue of Rolling Stone magazine, in which Manson talks about both the 'black hole of depression' he experienced while married to her, and the new love who inspired his forthcoming album. Von Teese's voice is high and quivering with emotion. 'Some things have been said about my marriage that are not fair, and I want to respond.'

She is in Seoul performing for the Mac Viva Glam campaign – just one of many high-profile gigs she's landed since becoming an unexpected darling of the high-fashion set a few years ago. One moment she was the delicious 'surprise' performer at Marc Jacobs's Christmas party, the next she was everywhere – cavorting naked in millions of pounds worth of diamonds at Garrard during New York Fashion Week, dancing at private dinner parties for Diane von Furstenberg and walking the red carpet in flawless and decidedly covered-up Vuitton with her monstrous superstar boyfriend Manson glowering beside her.

The delicious contradiction of a demure stripper won Von Teese fans such as Christian Louboutin (who now custom-makes all of the shoes she performs in), Elton John and Jean Paul Gaultier – as did her exquisitely manicured, highly luxurious personal style, more reminiscent of Rita Hayworth than the Happy Hooker. She quickly landed a front row seat at the Paris couture shows of Valentino, Lacroix and John Galliano, and was married in corseted purple-satin Vivienne Westwood and a Stephen Jones hat.

This winter Von Teese walked the runway in Gaultier's couture show. As her manager, Melissa Dishell, says, 'Dita's just so classy off stage. She's never the one at the party who's drunk or up on the table dancing with no underwear on.'

Of course, the fact that she also happened to have a rich and famous rock-star husband behind her didn't hurt either. It's amazing how cosy couturiers and magazines such as American Vogue (which ran an extensive story on the couple's goth-couture wedding at an Irish castle last year) become when there's a large fortune lurking in the background. But can the stripper from Rochester, Michigan, survive now that she has fled the House of Manson? Is there life after the Anti-Christ?

Von Teese herself has no doubts. 'This is what I've been doing my entire life,' she says, pointing out that she was already successful when she met Manson, and that she is not asking for any financial support from the divorce. 'It has always been very important for me to be self-supporting. I know people probably think I married Manson for the money, but that's so far from the case.'

Indeed, her determination to lead a glamorous life started early. Born Heather Renée Sweet in a small, dusty farming town, Von Teese – the middle daughter of a frequently out-of-work machinist father and a manicurist mother – grew up fascinated by old Hollywood films. She was particularly enamoured of the satin-and-champagne lives of golden-age stars such as Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable.

'Everything about them was so exciting to me,' says Von Teese, who describes herself as a deeply shy, 'silent' child who preferred to spend her afternoons dressing up and devouring old biographies of film stars, while other kids were outside kicking balls. 'I was very upset that I couldn't wear my Easter Sunday dress or my Christmas dresses all the time,' says Von Teese, who moved to Orange County, California, with her family when she was 12. 'It didn't make sense to me that I couldn't wear something pretty all the time. So I began plotting my womanhood at a young age.'

Part of that plot involved acquiring a lingerie wardrobe worthy of an old-school Hollywood screen goddess. 'There was nothing I loved more than those scenes in old movies where you see showgirls getting dressed backstage; I was just riveted,' says Von Teese, who was similarly riveted by the scantily clad vixens she saw in her father's stash of Playboy magazines. 'Even as a little kid, I wanted to know, "Why a corset? Why a girdle? Why stockings?" I couldn't get enough.'

While she was still at school, she went to work in a lingerie store, where she acquired her first corset ('pale-pink silk with black velvet trim'). She also began to scour the local fleamarkets for vintage lingerie, along with period hats and dresses and shoes to wear at the weekend. 'I got my start by dressing up on the LA rave scene in the early 1990s,' says Von Teese, who describes herself as a 'misfit' who delighted in wearing fox stoles and seamed silk stockings and ' a hat with a bird on top' to school. 'I had a lot of gay friends, and we all loved getting dressed up,' she continues. 'For us, dressing-up was theatre.'

Soon, undressing became theatre, too. While studying historic costume at a local college, Von Teese came across vintage pin-ups and men's magazines from the 1930s and 1940s with names such as Wink, Eyeful and Titter. She wore a corset every day (for seven years) until she was able to cinch her waist down to 16in. Using her own collection of lingerie, Von Teese started recreating pin-ups by artists such as Gil Elvgren with her boyfriend 'for fun' at the weekend. (Think Dita in a black bustier, riding a lion; Dita surprised in the bath; Dita done up like Bettie Page with a riding crop and stilettos.)

In 1992 Von Teese's boyfriend (an early internet aficionado) convinced her to create a website where she could sell her photos, and before long dita.net was one of the first adult sites on the internet. 'This was back in the days when people would send us a cheque in the mail, and when we got it we'd mail them the photos,' she laughs.

The photos of Von Teese as Bettie Page earned her attention in the fetish community, and soon she was being hired regularly as a fetish model. Although the jobs paid mostly in latex catsuits and waist-cinchers, she knew she was on the right track. She dropped out of college. 'I was already doing what I wanted to do,' she says, shrugging. 'It seemed silly not to just go with it.'

Her parents were dismayed, but she persevered. 'I've never had any personal issues with nudity,' says Von Teese, who posed nude for the first time when she was 18. 'As for my parents, well, I paid my credit-card bills on time. I paid my own rent. So there wasn't much they could do.' Her adventures in fetish and vintage porn soon had her curious about stripping, too.

'I realised there was a long history of pin-up girls who were dancers as well, and I liked the idea of that,' says Von Teese, who studied ballet throughout her childhood and had always hankered to be on stage. She started out dancing in a bikini bar in El Toro called Captain Cream, but she was quickly disappointed by the predominance of bored-looking 'fake bake' blondes in neon bikinis strutting around to rock music. 'I thought, "Why aren't they taking off their clothes properly?"' she has said.

Ever the entrepreneur, she saw an opportunity. She cut her naturally blond hair into a short Louise Brooks bob, dyed it as black as a raven's wing, and began powdering her freckled skin into a Snow White pallor. She started wearing her vintage corsets and opera gloves on stage. She also began studying the work of legendary burlesque dancers such as Gypsy Rose Lee and Lili St Cyr, to whom her work is indebted.

Soon Von Teese was creating long, elaborate burlesque shows (props ranged from huge pink feather fans to a carousel horse to a huge gold birdcage), which made her an instant celebrity within the fetish community ('I've been on the cover of every fetish magazine you can think of,' she says).

But by the late 1990s she'd begun to set her sights on the mainstream. In 1997 she quit her job at Captain Cream and began performing primarily at private events. By 2002 she was appearing with the Pussycat Dolls, and Hugh Hefner put her on the cover of the December issue of Playboy in a rib-crushing black corset with the headline the return of fetish. 'That was the real stamp of legitimacy for my dad,' she laughs. 'For the first time, he could easily explain what I did. It was like, "Look, my daughter's on the cover of Playboy."'

It was also around this time that Von Teese met Manson. A long-time fan of her work and a member of her website, the famed shock-rocker initially approached Von Teese by inviting her to dance in one of his videos. Although she refused, the two stayed in contact. In 2001 Von Teese arrived at Manson's 32nd birthday party with a bottle of absinthe, and that, as they say, was that.

By 2005 the pair were engaged and happily nested in a secluded mansion in the San Fernando Valley, where they lived surrounded by Manson's collections of Nazi uniforms, a foetus in a jar named Ludwig and a taxidermied baboon sitting on a rock with an erection. 'I had all the faith in the world in our relationship for the seven years we were together. I loved him very much, and when I married him I completely believed it would be forever.' She pauses. 'But that's not what happened.'

So what did happen? The afternoon I meet Von Teese at the Chateau, she drops some hints. There is a lot of talk about her new digs in Hollywood (complete with a silver-satin upholstered bedroom designed to look like 'an enormous jewel box') and how nice it is to have 'some peace and quiet for a change'. There is the comment about how she wasn't able to have any of her things around her at her old house, and the even odder aside: 'I basically lived with Mommie Dearest for six years,' a comment on which she wouldn't be drawn. But the picture remains hazy until Von Teese calls from Seoul.

Manson, she says down the line, has a party lifestyle that she found impossible to live with. 'It was difficult, because I was trying to get him help for his problems, and eventually I realised that he didn't want help. I wasn't supportive about his partying or his relationship with another girl, and as much as I loved him I wasn't going to be part of that.' After the wedding the relationship went into sharp decline, according to Von Teese. 'Everything went downhill after we got married. I started working a lot to escape my home life.' Manson, she says, lapsed into depression.

There was also an alleged infidelity. Indeed, in his Rolling Stone interview, Manson dropped a lot of hints about having a new relationship. His new album, he said, 'was clearly written to seduce somebody'. He attributes his musical revival to a close friend's gesture of devotion. 'She picked up a butcher's knife and said, "Here, you can stab me,"' he says. 'When someone was willing to drown with me, I really didn't want to drown any more.'

The interview clearly cut Von Teese to the quick. 'He says how depressed he was. I get the impression he thinks I was unsupportive,' she says. 'But the truth is I wasn't supportive of his lifestyle, and someone else came along who was.' Von Teese issued Manson an ultimatum, and, she says sadly, 'It didn't work. Instead, it made me the enemy.' She decided to move out on Christmas Eve, essentially empty-handed. 'I left with nothing. I knew that there was an inappropriate relationship going on in it, and I didn't want any part of it around to remind me. I didn't want that sofa. I didn't want that bed. I didn't want the knife you read about in the article.'

I ask her how things are going for her now. She pauses and then says, 'You know, I read a lot of biographies and autobiographies, so I know I'm not the only person who's gone through something like this. Millions of people have gone through this; millions of people go through it every day. I know I'm not alone. I know I'm going to be OK. I'm having fun focusing on my work and decorating my house and reconnecting with old friends.'

Recently, Von Teese has allowed herself to be set up on several blind dates by friends. 'I figure I have a better chance being introduced to somebody through a friend than I do meeting someone in a bar or on the internet,' she says. And though she 'isn't ready for another relationship yet', she is hopeful. 'I know I'll fall in love again.' She laughs a sad, bright little laugh. 'And I know that I loved him [Manson] enough to try and help.' :D

I love Dita too! She is beautiful. Ironically she is from Rochester, MI and so is Madonna. (well, Madonna is from Rochester Hills but they are adjacent.) Talk about diametric opposites.

She has that old Hollywood beauty that's timeless and it's something she can capitalize on. There's literally nobody really out there like her, doing what she does so successfully with that 'look'.

I think it's made to sound like Manson let her down, and maybe he did. But he must have had his reasons. He is not without intelligence and perhaps they just didn't hit it off. Shit like that happens and it's sad but at least she can get on with her own life now and can make a clean break. And so can he.

I think I know his reasons -- massive drug usage. Same reason he and Rose broke up. I think he's very talented, but I think his dependency is eating into both his creative and personal lives right now.

MARILYN MANSON: THE ABOMINATION OF PAYING RETAIL

Filed Under: Dita Von Teese > Evan Rachel Wood > Marilyn Manson

There is much talk about the fact that Marilyn Manson's bloody new vampire video, which will probably not be released in the US, makes unpleasant references to his failed marriage. Beside the fact that Marilyn and his new teenage girlfriend, Evan Rachel Wood, cavort in a duplicate of the bed he shared with wife Dita Von Teese, Marilyn shoots a lookalike Dita in the face. The video is a cruel blow for innocent Dita, but there is some justice. Since Dita is the pride and joy of many top European designers, they side with HER in this bustup and no longer roll out the red carpet for Marilyn. In other words, the freebies are drying up. Marilyn faces paying RETAIL like the rest of us! Horrors.

If you're a woman involved in the porn industry, why on god's green earth would you select as your first name, the name of a sexually transmitted disease?

Dirty Dita VonTini

Posted May 14th 2007 11:42AM by TMZ Staff

Does Dita Von Teese only bathe at sponsored events?

No complaints, of course, but the world sees Dita splashing around more than we see her dry! The former Mrs. Marilyn Manson busted out her favorite pair of pasties -- yes, those are pasties! -- in Toronto over for the weekend for the 2007 Fashion Cares event, and splashed around in a giant champagne glass bubble bath. Scrub your back, hon?

Only Dita can pull off wearing nothing to a fashion event!

Lethal Sadness

MARILYN Manson says depression destroyed his marriage to Dita von Teese, made him a virtual shut-in and caused him to mull suicide. "Really, I haven't left my house in a year. I shut myself, literally, out of being with people . . . I didn't want to live. When you want to die, you at least have a goal," the shock-rocker tells Britain's Observer. "[Dita] didn't understand the amount of pain I went through."

You know, I've had serious problems with depression since I was a kid, so I should be sympathetic, right? Not so much. You reach a point where you have to grow up and take responsibility for how you affect the people in your life. He marries, and he cheats on his wife with some kid, and then he has the gall and immaturity to put down his wife in the press with this whole "she didn't understand me" schtick?

Seriously, if he had made dying his goal, maybe he would've achieved something.

Clooney & '13' crew raise a yacht of loot for Darfur

Those handsome "Ocean's Thirteen" con artists - George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle - scored a cool $9.2 million on the French Riviera Tuesday night. But nobody's calling the gendarmes.

The only people likely to complain about Clooney's latest caper are the paparazzi. Most of them were left at the dock when the Oscar-winner and his crew shoved off on the 237-foot yacht that was the scene of the Not on Our Watch benefit for Darfur.

Among those piped aboard the RM Elegant (a Greek-registered vessel that ranks No. 49 on Power & Motor Yacht mag's list of the world's 100 largest yachts) were "Ocean's Thirteen" castmates Ellen Barkin, Andy Garcia, Scott Caan and Elliott Gould and charity co-skipper Jerry Weintraub.

Everyone looked their best. Tan-n-tuxed Clooney "was a dead ringer for Cary Grant" in "To Catch a Thief," says our spy. "Ellen looked fierce in a tight velvet dress. She has the most rocking body you've ever seen." Cheadle, who told Foxnews.com's Roger Friedman that he'll direct himself in a biopic about Miles Davis, appeared to already be channeling the jazz legend's style.

Guests paid as much as $25,000 a ticket for the Audi-sponsored cruise. Steven Spielberg personally chipped in $1 million and, we hear, OK! Magazine donated around $2 million (which may explain why it had the exclusive on coverage).

Pitt came without Angelina Jolie, who was having dinner with Mariane Pearl, whom she plays in "A Mighty Heart." He met up later with them and daughter Shiloh, who's about to celebrate her first birthday.

Back on shore, Naomi Campbell celebrated her 37th birthday at the Eden Roc restaurant with fireworks furnished by Fawaz Gruosi, owner of Da Grisogono jeweler. Also there were Kimora Lee Simmons and Djimon Hounsou (their kissing and hand-holding removed all doubt that they're a couple), Kid Rock and May Anderson, Eva Mendes, Kerry Washington, Bai Ling and Petra Nemcova (flirting with Stavros Niarchos). Word is that Beyoncé and Jay Z made a surprise appearance - to see her Destiny's Child sister, Kelly Rowland, perform. But, after being seated in the back of the room, they left early.

Most of Tuesday night's celebs met up again at last night's AmFAR benefit, presented by Bold Films, M.A.C., and the Weinstein Company. Also on hand there were Elton John, Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan, Catherine Deneuve, Claudia Schiffer, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Misha Barton and Elle Macpherson. Besides the Sharon Stone-driven auction and Kylie Minogue's rendition of "Locomotion," the evening's highlight may have been Dita Von Teese stripping down to pink Swarovski pasties and Christian Louboutin cowboy boots and then straddling a giant crystal-encrusted mechanical lipstick.

Now that's an image.

All-night Party Floats Cannes

May 26, 2007 -- SURVIVORS of the Cannes Film Festival report the best party of the star-studded, 12-day bacchanal so far was the bash Kid Rock threw on his yacht that featured a jam with Bono and James Blunt.

Guests including Jessica Simpson, Leo DiCaprio, Mischa Barton, Jude Law, Snoop Dogg, Minnie Driver, Jay-Z and the cast of “Entourage” went through over 100 bottles of champagne before the revelry ended at 9 a.m.

“Entourage” was in Cannes to shoot a scene starring Kevin (“Drama”) Dillon on the red carpet at the premiere of “Ocean’s Thirteen” as soon as the cast and Angelina Jolie cleared out.

Promoting “Ocean’s,” Andy Garcia was asked if the cast would appear on Oprah Winfrey’s show. He deadpanned, “I had to sleep with Oprah to get on her show!”

Talking about Al Pacino, who wasn’t there, producer Jerry Weintraub, said: “When Pacino first arrived for filming, he asked me what the cast thought of him. I said, ‘Al, what did you think about Brando when you arrived for “The Godfather?” ’ Interestingly, a few of the cast even referred to him as ‘Mr. Pacino.’ ”

At the V.I.P. club on the Croisette, Petra Nemcova was spotted “making out with Stavros Niarchos and dancing more sexily than the hired dancers.” Insiders say she’s trying to get revenge on ex-boyfriend Blunt,

who supposedly had flings with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, women Stavros has also had the pleasure of knowing.

At the AmFAR party at the Moulin de Mougins, Dita Von Teese and Rose McGowan - both exes of Marilyn Manson - proved they can act like ladies. “They ran into each other and exchanged glowing compliments,” said a spy.

There was good buzz on the sexually charged “Go-Go Girls,” the best movie by Abel Ferrara since “Bad Lieutenant” (1992). The film drew comparisons to the works of John Cassavetes and Woody Allen.

And there were boos for Ellen Barkin, at least from Newsweek’s Dana Thomas, who reports she was “waved away” by Barkin “like an annoying gnat and shoved by her bodyguard for good measure.” Thomas adds that “the division of the celebrities and socalled important people from the other 30,000 who descend on the Riviera resort for the 12-day event is slowly but surely killing the festive spirit.”

Polar Opposites?

Photographers snapped Dita Von Teese shopping in LA with her sister yesterday. I’m not sure why, but I never would have guessed that woman on the right would be Dita’s sister. Don’t get me wrong: they’re both gorgeous, but the sister looks like waltzed out of a Lily Pulitzer ad.

I'm such a preppy, I can't help it, I LOVE the sister's outfit. I like Dita's dress too, BUT, she is a prime example of why women with big boobs should always wear a bra. Her boobs may be magnificent when she's naked but in that dress they look horrible. Her boobs actually look much larger than I think they are....(which I realize many women would like, but it also makes her torso look like it's ALL BOOB. Again, not a look I find attractive)

Yeah, that blouson/chiffon thing going on with the dress's bodice is not flattering at all. I don't really think those colors are best for Dita, either.

I admire both women's looks, although I could never wear either outfit convincingly, myself.
