If he wants to not pay taxes, let him buy his own island and live there and NOT WORK EVER AGAIN IN THE U.S.. I am so sick and tired of rich people who think they don't have to pay taxes. Isn't it bad enough the government lets corporations get away with it. HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU PEOPLE NEED!

'Blade' Star Could Score 'Club Fed'

Actor Wesley Snipes is Likely to Serve Time in a Minimum Security Prison <_<

By EMILY FRIEDMAN

April 25, 2008

Film Star Wesley Snipes won't be donning prison stripes anytime soon, said several prison experts, who told ABCNEWS.com that Snipes' life in the slammer will likely be stripe-free and a lot cushier than most might expect.

Actor Wesley Snipes, who was sentenced to three years in prison for failing to file his federal tax returns, is likely to do time in a minimum security prison and maybe even one of the last "Club Fed" around, according to prison experts.

The star of the movie "Blade" was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison following his February conviction on three misdemeanor tax fraud charges for failing to pay millions of dollars in federal taxes.

His lawyers said they would appeal the sentence, but if he does end up doing time, sentencing consultants said a federal prison camp, and not a maximum security prison, would likely become Snipes' new home away from home.

"With no prior record, [snipes] will end up in a minimum security prison," said John Webster, the managing director of the National Prison and Sentencing Consultants Inc. "There will be no bars, no cells, and it will be dormitory type housing -- he'll never be locked in a cell."

"The only blood he'll see is if he cuts himself shaving," added Webster, who has advised many high-profile clients on their impending time in prison and has also served time himself.

Because Snipes' main residence is in New Jersey, it's likely he'll end up in a prison within a 500-mile radius, said Webster, who added that it's "going to be a very comfortable existence in terms of prison."

'Bland Meals' a Reality Check for Snipes

One probable place for Snipes' internment is the federal prison camp in Fairton, N.J., which is a low security complex for men and, according to Ed Bales, the managing director of Federal Prison Consultants LLC, is one of the few "Club Feds" still around.

"[Fairton] is one of the best camps and is known for having housed a lot of high-profile criminals," said Bales. "It's small, about 100 people in the camp, and has small ranch-style buildings."

"It's a laid back place," said Bales, "and one we consider to be run well."

So laid back, in fact, that Bales said the inmates can wear khaki slacks and shirts while they're on the job -- teaching, preparing food and landscaping are some of the options -- and during their off-time prisoners can purchase gray sweat suits and sneakers to wear. Bales sometimes advises his own clients to wear sweat pants when they report for their sentences in the hope that they'll get to keep their clothes to wear on the inside.

But the food may be less enjoyable than the wardrobe, said Bales.

"The food is not going to be what [snipes] is used to," said Bales, who said pasta and potatoes are prison staples. "It's very bland and high in calories and starch to keep everyone relaxed."

If the prison's delicacies don't strike his fancy, Snipes will be able to buy brand-name food, such as soda and chips, from the commissary and cook a few items in a small kitchen or in one of the microwaves that are made available to inmates.

Snipes: Most Popular Kid on the Cell Block?

Likely to be bunking with other white-collar criminals also in the clink for charges similar to his own, Snipes will also run into younger guys who are in on first-time drug offenses, said prison expert Webster.

"He'll fit in just fine," said Webster, who said the chances of sexual assaults, and other violence, which are common in maximum security prisons, are pretty slim. "There's nothing to be afraid of, and his health is not in danger."

Snipes may actually be pleasantly surprised by his fellow inmates, many of whom will be excited to be living with a certified movie star.

"Other inmates will want to get to know him and shake his hand and claim to be friends with him," said Webster. "But the bureau will treat him like any other inmate. He's not the first celebrity to go to prison."

One thing that Snipes won't be able to do behind bars is conduct any sort of business, so his career on the silver screen will certainly be put on hold, said Webster.

"High-profile clients don't seem to get that when they're in prison they can't conduct business of any kind, and that's how most of them get in trouble," said Webster, who said that all inmates' phone calls are monitored.

He recommends Snipes not only get a full medical examination before entering prison but also that he turns over any business matters to his attorney or partners.

Still, wherever Snipes ends up, it won't be much like the facilities featured on television programs such as "Oz" or "Law and Order." AWWW...NUTS...

"Most people know a lot about prisons from what they see on television," said Webster. "They would never make a movie about a federal prison camp because there's not much drama in watching a bunch of fat, middle-aged guys sitting around playing cribbage."

Goldberg: Snipes Is A Victim

WHOOPI GOLDBERG has defended jailed actor WESLEY SNIPES and insists he has been used to "set an example" to the American people.

Last week (ends25Apr08), the Blade actor was handed a three-year jail term by Florida Judge William Terrell Hodges after, he was convicted of failing to file his taxes for five years.

But Goldberg is convinced Hollywood stars who break the law are being used as scapegoats by the U.S government in a bid to deter other people from criminal activity.

She says, "This is not unusual. With tax evasion, (the IRS) gets very, very agitated and if you're famous they are putting you behind some kind of bar."

Ahem, I am not sure what the problem is here. he broke the law, he got convicted, he is going to jail. so what.

Is she saying that if you are a celebrity that you shouldn't be prosecuted?

Chances are you would have to be some sort of celebrity to owe the kind of money he did.

Snipes mistake: thinking that he could get away with be because he was a celebrity and not making a deal with the IRS. Now he is going to jail and will still owe the money.

Snipes' attorneys to appeal tax conviction, 3-year sentence

OCALA, Fla. - Lawyers for Wesley Snipes have filed notice to appeal his federal tax conviction.

The 45-year-old action star was sentenced to three years in prison last week on three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file his income tax returns. He will remain free until he's ordered to surrender by the federal Bureau of Prisons.

Snipes' attorneys filed the notice Thursday for the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They indicated last week they would do so. The two-page filing doesn't specify the nature of their argument.

Snipes was acquitted of five other counts in February, including two felonies.

His films include the "Blade" trilogy and "Jungle Fev

It's amazing that rich high profile people try to get away with tax evasion. Being famous must give you some sort of false sense of security. I mean, how many times do you have to hear someone got arrested on Tax Evasion before realizing that it's not a good thing to try and get away with?

Prosecutors: Snipes 'should be in custody'

By Fred Hiers

Star-Banner

OCALA - Actor Wesley Snipes' freedom as he appeals his 36-month sentence on three misdemeanor charges for not filing taxes could be in peril.

The U.S. Attorney's Office filed a motion Thursday with the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit saying that it will appeal a U.S. district judge's May 22 decision allowing Snipes to remain free on bond while he appeals his three-year sentence. The sentence was the maximum allowed for his crimes.

"We want him in custody," said Steve Cole, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. "He's been convicted by a jury. He has been sentenced to three years and he should be in custody."

On May 22, Judge William Terrell Hodges penned an order saying "the court is persuaded by the history of the case and all of the attendant circumstances that the defendant poses no substantial risk of flight and does not constitute a danger of any kind if he remains at liberty pending appeal."

Snipes' lawyers had argued for leniency while the federal prosecutors sought the maximum penalty.

Cole said the appellate court could takes weeks, or even months, to make a decision on the U.S. Attorney's Office motion.

After the April 25 sentencing, Snipes handed Hodges three checks totaling $5 million in back taxes. Cole said the Internal Revenue Department and the U.S. Attorney's Office were working together to determine just how much the actor, best known for his "Blade" vampire films, still has to pay.

Previously, federal officials have estimated he owed about $17 million in back taxes, fines and interest.

Dubai party may spell trouble for Wesley Snipes

Attorneys are asking a judge to restrict Snipes travel outside the U.S.

msnbc.com

ORLANDO, Fla. - Prosecutors in Florida say actor Wesley Snipes attended a lavish party in Dubai while free on bond as he appeals a tax conviction.

U.S. attorneys in Ocala are asking a judge to restrict Snipes’ travel outside the United States because he attended a $20 million party last November for the opening of the $1.5 billion Atlantis Hotel resort.

A jury convicted the action star last year of three counts of willfully failing to file his income taxes. He is free on bond while he appeals the convictions and his three-year prison sentence to the 11th Circuit Court in Atlanta.

A federal judge last year said Snipes could only travel to London and Bangkok for work on movies.

Snipes’ attorney declined to comment.

That is what Al Capone was put away for. None of the murders that he had committed or committed himself. He was sent to jail for tax evsion. And Leona Helmsley was also put away for this. And Sophia Loren was sent to jail in Italy for the same thing. Of course hers was only for 18 days but still.

He said: "I like to read about different religions - Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism. I mainly buy books in my free time.

"It was actually my martial arts training that got me into it - after all it's quite spiritual. And at the theatre they always tell you what you're not. That' actually made me wonder who I actually am."

When he is not studying religions, Wesley is busy caring for his family.

Wesley Snipes Loses Appeal in IRS Case

Unclear when actor will have to report to prison for three-year sentence

Updated 5:51 PM EDT, Fri, Jul 16, 2010

Wesley Snipes is set to begin serving a three-year prison sentence for each year he refused to pay the taxman.

A federal appeals court in Florida Friday upheld the "Blade" star's sentence, who was convicted two years ago of failing to file income tax returns for three years.

The opinion by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is the latest blow to the action movie icon, whose lawyers argued the three-year sentence was "unreasonable" and that he should have been granted a hearing to decide whether his trial should have been held in New York instead of Florida.

But the three-judge panel concluded in a 35-page ruling that the Florida federal court that sentenced Snipes "acted well within its considerable discretion."

Good. I don't care who you are we pay taxes in this country (as most other countries do). I was glad when the survivor guy went to prison for non payment. You don't like the tax system here move somewhere else but don't reap the benefits of this country. Some people in the US do not realize how little we pay compared to other countries. Move to England or France. England will probably welcome you since they have a wedding coming up. :4biggrin:
