Julia Roberts Takes Up 'Knitting'

She'll play a mother and a quilter

Oscar winner Julia Roberts will produce and star in the family drama "The Friday Night Knitting Club."

According to Variety, the Universal production comes from an upcoming novel by Kate Jacobs focusing on a woman who runs a Manhattan knitting store while also raising a teenage daughter. The title refers to the main character's weekly gathering with clients. Somewhere along the line there's a tragedy, or at least something to give the movie a plot.

Roberts will produce through her Red Om shingle, while Christine Peters' CFP Prods. banner will also produce. It currently lacks a writer and director.

Most recently seen in "Ocean's Twelve" and heard in "The Ant Bully," Roberts' voice will also dominate the winter family flick "Charlotte's Web." The "Erin Brockovich" star will next appear in "Charlie Wilson's War" opposite Tom Hanks and possibly in Paramount's "Eat, Pray, Love."

JULIA, HUBBY EXPECTING NO. 3

December 29, 2006 -- JULIA Roberts has a hit movie out and two more films on the way - but her biggest project at the moment is a bun in the oven.

Page Six has learned that the auburn-tressed Oscar winner is pregnant with her third child and will give birth next summer. The happy news comes as Roberts flies high in the nation's No. 5 picture, "Charlotte's Web," in which she provides the voice for the beloved spider.

Her pregnancy is somewhat of a surprise since the star, 39, had so much difficulty with her first effort to start a family with cameraman hubby Danny Moder, 37. In November 2004, she gave birth to twins Phinnaeus Walter and Hazel Patricia - but only after months of round-the-clock bed rest that followed a scare in which she was rushed to the hospital with false labor.

It's not known how the Georgia-born beauty's pregnancy will affect her latest screen projects. Roberts, who commands up to $25 million per movie, is appearing in Mike Nichols' new flick, "Charlie Wilson's War," and has reportedly signed to do "The Friday Night Knitting Club." But it's likely she'll take some time off, as she did when the twins were born. "It's a joy being domestic. It's something I want and something that makes me very happy," she once told an interviewer.

Moder and Roberts tied the knot in July 2002 at their sprawling ranch in Arroyo Seco, N.M., near Taos, after he'd dumped his makeup-artist wife of five years, Vera Steinberg, and Roberts had shed her longtime boyfriend, Benjamin Bratt.

Whether Roberts' upcoming visit from the stork will be her last is anybody's guess. She once told Oprah Winfrey that she and Moder wanted a big family, adding: "I'm in the harbor of my life . . . Danny has really shined the light for me."

Roberts' bliss is eons away from the old days when she was a swinging bachelorette with such boyfriends as Kiefer Sutherland, Liam Neeson, Matthew Perry and Daniel Day-Lewis. There was also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it marriage to Lyle Lovett.

Roberts' spokeswoman, Marci Engelman, couldn't be reached for comment.

Julia Roberts Expecting Baby No. 3

FRIDAY DECEMBER 29, 2006 10:55 AM EST

By Stephen M. Silverman and Jess Cagle

Hazel and Finn will soon have to share their famous mom's attention: Julia Roberts is expecting her third child with husband Danny Moder.

Roberts is due this summer, her rep, Marcy Engelman, confirms exclusively to PEOPLE.

News of the pregnancy first appeared in the New York Post's Page Six column. Roberts, 39, and Moder, 37, were married in July 2002 and welcomed Hazel and Finn (short for Phinnaeus) in November 2004.

In May, Roberts told David Letterman of the twins: "They seem to really love each other. ? He's sort of very boyish and masculine. He has red hair and big green eyes. And she's very girlish and has very blonde hair and blue eyes. He likes blueberries. She likes her daddy."

After the twins were born, Roberts did voice work in two kid-friendly films, the animated Ant Bully and Charlotte's Web, out now. This spring, she made her Broadway debut in the drama Three Days of Rain.

In the fall, she was back to filming in earnest, arriving in Morocco in October to shoot the drama Charlie Wilson's War – with her 23-month-old twins and Moder in tow. She celebrated her 39th birthday at a local restaurant on Oct. 28 and was often seen sightseeing with her clan.

For Roberts, motherhood is her top priority. "The kids bring her such a sense of fulfillment and joy," Roberts's longtime friend and Three Days of Rain producer Marc Platt told PEOPLE in April. "It's wonderful to see."

Kiss off a love scene

with Julia? Denzel did

Denzel Washington smooched Julia Roberts at the Oscars in 2002, but wouldn't do it for the big screen.

Denzel Washington once turned down a love scene with Julia Roberts out of loyalty to his female African-American fans, Allison Samuels reveals in her new book, "Off the Record" (Amistad).

Washington nixed the steamy segment even though Roberts insisted that he be cast as her co-star in "The Pelican Brief," writes Samuels, a respected Newsweek reporter.

Washington explained: "Black women are not often seen as objects of desire on film. And they have always been my core audience."

The Oscar winner also said he turned down the starring role in "Love Field" with Michelle Pfeiffer because of the N-word. "It was n— this and n— that. I wasn't going to be but so many n—s in a film."

Meanwhile, Eddie Murphy made the mistake of not being choosy enough in doing the "Beverly Hills Cop" sequels, he confided to Samuels. "There was no reason to do the third and fourth ones. I could tell they were bad — I read the script," Murphy said. "But when you never had money, you always want more, and you're worried you're going to run out."

Murphy, now a contender for an Oscar nod for his role in "Dreamgirls," "is a sensitive guy about criticism," Samuels told us yesterday — so much so that he once threw a friend of Samuels out of his room when the pal said she didn't like Murphy's music.

Samuels, who also interviews athletes and rappers — Tupac Shakur told her how much he loved Shakespeare, J.D. Salinger and the films "Ordinary People" and "Terms of Endearment" — recently traveled to South Africa with Oprah Winfrey, breaking the news that Winfrey feels American inner-city kids don't value education as much as students in her Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls there.

How did Winfrey choose 152 girls out of 3,500 applicants?

"They're not all Type A, but no one was shy," Samuels told us. "They're bright, often presidents of their class. They were ready to go: 'This is my moment, and I'm going to take it.' That's what she liked — she hopes someday there'll be more women in power, to make things better for their country and because mothers won't be so quick to send their kids off to war."

Samuels says she witnessed "the strong friendship [Winfrey] has with Gayle King. They depend on each other a great deal. [Winfrey] is a one-woman dynamo and totally focused on her career thing.

"She's teaching classes at the school via satellite. Her brain is always working on 'What can I do next?' The closest thing to relaxation was when Gayle's daughter [ Kirby ] and they were just sitting around talking."

Rumor: More twins on the way for Julia Roberts?

According to the New York Daily News, Julia Roberts may be pregnant with another set of twins! They cite recent purchases at Beverly Hills' go-to baby boutique, Petit Tresor, where Julia bought two Bonne Nuit Cherubini cribs ($2,200) and changing tables ($2,450)- just like Diddy and Kim Porter's twin girls D'Lila and Jessie have, two gliders, two Moses baskets, and lots of Kaloo toys, totalling over $10,000.

One of our readers suggested that the reason Julia bought two of each is not that she and husband Danny Moder are expecting twins but because she wants to have identical nurseries in their Taos and Malibu homes.

Of course, it is completely possible Julia is having another set of twins but who knows whether it's from IVF. After a woman gives birth vaginally, her cervix is wider and sperm travels better so it's easier to conceive naturally. (However, she gave birth to her two year old twins Phinnaeus and Hazel via c-section.)

Julia Roberts' In-Laws Should Nickname Her "Petty Woman"

That is, if they don't like her. Because they reportedly don't. And recently, they were informed about Julia's recent pregnancy before after [correction, my bad] the rest of the world and they're more than a little miffed. The National Enquirer reports:

Danny's brother and sisters are livid because she not only hid the pregnancy news from them, but also kept trips to a nearby Los Angeles fertility specialist under wraps, reveals an insider.

"The Moders are so angry over the snub that they haven't even called to congratulate Julia."

They've had a rocky relationship with her since 2001, when she started an affair with Danny, who was then married.

"They had come to a truce -- especially since the birth of Julia's twins in 2004 -- but it's become a cold war once again," said the insider.

Maybe Julia will be able to once again smooth things over, this time by having quadruplets.

I don't think she's got the face for her hair hanging loose either. Total horse face. I never got the "pretty woman" thing. :P

I'll be the odd one out and say I think she's stunning--her face isn't perfectly symmetrical or classically beautiful and I like her all the more for that. I prefer her hair down, or pulled back loosely, but I don't find the recent ad photos offensive at all.....

I'm not offended by them, either. And, to be honest, I do not think a person should be required to be beautiful to have an acting career, so more power to her for being successful. On the other hand, I always thought the whole "Pretty Woman" hype was a crock. Striking, sure; interesting-looking? -- okay. Beautiful -- no, not in my opinion. Why did the media find it necessary to stuff the "Julia Roberts is THE pretty woman" line down our throats?

My issue is with the media hype much more than with her appearance. I also am blessed with, shall we say, irregular features (I get the "Has anyone told you that you look like Julia Roberts?" line), and the ponytail look is practical but not flattering.

I've never understood the big AMerica's Sweetheart (or "America's Next Sweetheart" ) publicity campaigns either. But they must work (or, have worked at one time--haven't heard that phrase in a while) but I think it underestimates the consumer and narrows down the "package" we apparently expect from actors & actresses. But then, maybe I'm showing my elitist side  Maybe "most" Americans like that crap. They're the same ones that believe Tom Cruise is straight and truly madly deeply in love with Katie, of course, but hey--maybe they spend more money at the movies than I do ;)
