Disney's $3.26 billion box office take is due in no small part to the talents of chameleonlike Actor of his Generation Johnny Depp--more specifically, his Captain Jack Sparrow, whom he claims is a riff on Keith Richards, but whose effete posturing, let's face it, heeds somewhat closer to Elton John after five too many Cointreautinis. Fitting, then, that the actor should now be in talks to play another gay British rock icon, Queen's handlebar-mustachioed lead singer, Freddie Mercury:

[T]he Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp, is being lined up to play a rock star for real in a biopic of the late Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury.

Robert de Niro's company, Tribeca Productions, is said to be behind the project, which Brian May, the Queen guitarist, confirmed was in development. "Discussions are at an early stage," he said on his website.

Can Johnny Depp sing? Or would they dub? I love Freddy Mercury....I think Depp could pull it off. He does those "quirky" characters so well.....

Well he originally came to LA as a musician but starting acting to make money. He can definitely play the guitar... he did some guitar work in a song on one of Oasis' albums, among many other things. As for whether he can sing, I have no clue. But I would bet 10 million that, even if he has a good voice, he can't sing like Freddie -- arguably one of the best vocalists (if not the best) in the history of popular music. But Depp's such an awesome actor that I think he could really pull this off. It'll kill me if they screw up the casting on this one...

JOHNNY DEPP TO PLAY FREDDIE?

Christina Zinner asked about a news report in the Mail On Sunday, 17 December.... SEE LETTERS

Yes, I saw this ...

The truth is ...

Discussions are at an early stage .... I don't know where this story came from, but I think someone in the media, as usual, has taken a punt ... of course these opportunists have little to lose ... who cares about truth these days? Certainly not the tabloid press.

But you're right about one thing ... Johnny Depp is fantastic. He would be a worthy counterpart for Freddie on screen. I don't think I can say any more right now.

love

Bri

Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor will have the final say over the music in the film - which will see Depp 43, miming to Mercury's original vocal recordings.

Mercury's long-term girlfriend, Mary Austin said: 'I can't think of anyone better to play Freddie.'

^^ Mercury had a long-term girlfriend??

I thought he was really just a Queen!

Although he had a very close girlfriend named Mary Austin for many years, Freddie Mercury had always been fairly open about his sexuality. In a March 12, 1974 interview for New Musical Express, he told the interviewer: 'I am as gay as a daffodil, my dear!' Beginning in the mid 1970s, Mercury began a series of affairs with men, which ultimately resulted in the end of his relationship with Austin. However, the two remained close friends through the years, and Mercury often referred to Austin as his only true friend. In a 1985 interview, Mercury said of Austin, "All my lovers asked me why they couldn't replace Mary, but it's simply impossible. The only friend I've got is Mary, and I don't want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage. We believe in each other, that's enough for me. I couldn't fall in love with a man the same way as I have with Mary."

In 1983, Mercury found a new lover named Jim Hutton. Hutton lived with Mercury for the last six years of his life, cared for him when he was ill, and was at his bedside when he died. According to Hutton, Mercury referred to him as his husband, and died wearing a wedding band that Hutton had given him.

Depp to Make Film About Poisoned Ex-Spy

LONDON (AP) -- Johnny Depp is making a film about a former Russian spy whose poisoning death in London has touched off an international mystery, the trade magazine Variety reported.

Warner Bros. has bought the rights to a book about Alexander Litvinenko for Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, the magazine reported Friday. Depp will produce the film and could star in it, the report said.

Warner Bros. is racing against director Michael Mann and Colombia Pictures, which has agreed to pay $1.5 million for the rights to another book being co-written by the former spy's widow Marina Litvinenko, and Alex Goldfarb, a close friend, Variety reported later on its Web site. The book is expected to be published in May by Simon & Schuster's Free Press imprint, the report said.

Warner Bros. had tried unsuccessfully to buy the rights to the book by Litvinenko's widow, the report said. The studio has acquired the rights to a book by New York Times journalist Alan Cowell, which is expected to be published next year by Doubleday.

Officials from both studios were not immediately available for comment.

Mann is known for his crime sagas, including "Collateral," "Heat" and "Miami Vice," while Depp often takes on eccentric character roles in films such as "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Finding Neverland" and "Edward Scissorhands."

The report said Columbia envisions an espionage thriller "exploring the collision between the deep rooted Russian power structure enforced by the KGB ... and the new wave of wild west capitalism" that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Litvinenko died in November, several weeks after being poisoned by the rare radioactive isotope polonium-210. In a deathbed statement, Litvinenko blamed the Kremlin for his poisoning. Russian officials have denied that allegation.

British and Russian authorities are both investigating his death.

Litvinenko was an agent in the Russian Federal Security Service, the agency that replaced the KGB. After breaking with the agency he was granted asylum in Britain, where he became a fierce Kremlin critic and wrote a book claiming that the FSB had bombed apartment buildings in 1999 to blame the blasts on Chechen separatists and create a pretext for resuming the war in Chechnya.

Litvinenko said he fell ill after meeting in London with an Italian security expert to discuss possible suspects in the killing of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya a month earlier. Politkovskaya was noted for her coverage of human rights abuses in Chechnya.

Depp in vigil for ill daughter

By THOMAS WHITAKER

and NICK PARKER

March 08, 2007

JOHNNY DEPP was last night keeping a vigil for his seriously ill daughter at a British hospital.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor was due to start filming a new movie in England when LILY-ROSE, seven, became sick.

He and his partner VANESSA PARADIS have spent the last nine days with their little girl, who is in a “serious condition”. The couple, who live in France with Lily-Rose and their four-year-old son Jack, have been coming into the hospital via a staff entrance.

They travel in a blacked-out people carrier with their security team.

A hospital source said: “They are worried sick — but Lily-Rose is getting the very best treatment available.”

The Sun knows the name of the hospital and the nature of the illness but we are not printing them to protect the family’s privacy.

American Depp, 43, is in Britain to shoot the screen version of hit musical Sweeney Todd at Pinewood Studios in Bucks.

He is playing Sweeney — the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The devoted dad usually takes his family with him when he is filming.

A studio source said: “Johnny is deeply concerned about his daughter.

“As soon as he heard that she is unwell he went to her bedside.

“He will do anything for his kids.”

Depp’s spokesman declined to comment.

Whoa! This kind of came out of nowhere. I hope she's okay. Serious illnesses as a child? It's all pretty sad - I hope she bounces back okay. Maybe she's having her tonsils or appendix removed and the media is hyping it up out of proportion? I don't think a serious illness usually comes out of nowhere...but I'm not a doctor (as is evident).

Could be a lot of things. Could be she had symptoms of something that went unrecognized. Could be she had something for a long time that the public didn't know about that has recently escalated. We have no way of knowing.....

OH my god, that is so sad. They must be so very worried. 7-years-old...she's just a little thing. I love to hear that they are there with her every minute. She is probably so scared to be in the hospital. Johnny will make it all better. :)
